November 4, 2014- Day of Decision
Phil Axelrod
4 meetings
Wednesdays, 10/8, 10/15,10/22,
and 11/12
8:00 AM to 9:30 AM
Fee: $ 10
Are you interested in the major issues facing
us in 2015, as a result of the 2014 off year
elections? If you answer yes than this course
is for you. We will meet to review and select
the most pressing issues of the day and how
they will impact the upcoming elections as
well as
the presidential elections in
2016. Once we decide on the major issues
we will split up into groups to research them
and report back to the group in the following
session. We will also take a secret straw poll
to determine who and what issues will prevail,
with results published after the elections. So if
you enjoy a good political discussion, make
sure you attend.
Current Events Roundtable
Phil Axelrod
11 Meetings
Tuesday, from 10/7 to 12/16
8:00 AM to 9:30 AM
Fee: $ 25
Let's meet weekly to discuss the current
events of the day. Be prepared to actively
participate as we debate the pros and cons of
the topics selected by the group. Each
participant is encouraged to bring an item or
topic currently in the public's eye. We are not
limited to political items for discussion. At the
beginning of each session, I will poll the group
for topics. Once we have a complete list we
will vote on all topics with the one garnering
the most votes the first topic discussed at
each meeting. Lively discussions will ensue,
followed by resolutions. If you enjoy brisk and
vigorous debate, this is the group for you.
Dave Poling 6 meetings
Thursday, from 10/9 to 11/20
11:00 AM to 12:30 PM
Fee: $ 25
Ranking of the Presidents has long been a
popular game among professional historians.
Dave will present detailed information based
on the time in office of 15 of our leading
Presidents (based on the results of previous
class rankings). There will be time for
discussion after each presentation but then
each student will rate the President based on
what he just heard. This will lead to a
composite class ranking of the top 15 followed
by an update on the composite student
rankings.

Friday, from 10/10 to 11/21
1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Fee: $ 25
Welcome to the Grand Learning edition of
Socrates Cafe. The Society for Philosophical
Inquiry, creators of the Socrates Cafe
concept, is a grassroots nonprofit organization
devoted to supporting philosophical inquirers
of all ages and walks of life. Inside the
cafe we will be looking at basic
ethical themes such as,
justice, freedom,
happiness and
human nature.
We will
attempt to
gain a
better
understanding
regarding
such timely
questions as:
How can we better
recognize
contradictions between the
ideals we claim to espouse, and the actual
ways of the world? How can we quit being so
quick to label others, and to label ourselves?
In a world so seemingly overwhelmed by
unintended consequences, no good deed
ever goes unpunished, why even bother? If
you're looking for an opportunity to contribute,
or be enlightened by an honest open
discussion of the philosophical, ethical and
moral trends facing the world today, drop by
the cafe.

End-of-Life Readiness
Charlotte Fox
Wednesday, 10/8
10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Dying is a serious and complicated business.
None of us want to think about the day we are
going to die, but those we leave behind will
hope and pray that we do. "And Then There
Was One" is a 258 page workbook guide to aid
in end-of-life planning. It is an all-in-one-place
to map out wishes, list legal and financial
affairs, personal and business contact lists,
arrangements for pets, and much more to ease
the way for survivors. It contains nearly 70
forms and numerous comprehensive checklists
that spell out what needs to be taken care of
before and after a death. Probate courts are
inundated with cases resulting from a lack of
planning. Don't let death catch you and your
loved ones unprepared. Planned speakers will
include an attorney and Hospice of the Valley.
Optional workbook $25.00. There will be a onehour lunch break (lunch is on your own). (This
course was "And Then There Was One" in

In general, very little is known about
Manchuria today other than the fact that it is
very cold in the winter and somewhat
isolated. Manchuria used to be a thriving
region with a very modern (for the times) city
of Harbin which was a Russian city, but then
came under Japanese rule before falling to
the Soviets briefly, and is now under the
Peoples Republic of China. Manchuria, often
considered to be part of China today, is a
very different and separate region with
ethnically/racially different people inhabiting
the region. p. 23 for details

for a light hearted journey on how we build our
reality and the simple steps we can use to
increase happiness and well-being. We’ll take
a gentle look at how changing our perception
makes a large difference in the way people
see us and we see ourselves in the world.
Health/Self
Iceland and Greenland lie in the North Atlantic
- two countries, close geographically but very
different. Iceland sits half on the European
and half on the North American tectonic
plates. It is a country of immense scenic
beauty and a thriving European culture.
Greenland, its neighbor to the west, is a very
different place - larger, colder and populated
primarily by Inuit people. While it is currently
a "backwater", Greenland is poised for big
changes as one of the next great mining
frontiers as global warming starts to uncover
precious metals from the frozen surroundings.
We'll start with a lively discussion of the
people, geography, history, government,
economy, current events, etc and will end with
a 30 minute slide show. This lecture series is
appropriate for those who have been there or
those who just want to learn more about our
fascinating world.

The Federalist Papers are a series of 85

"In 1789 France fell into Revolution, and the
world has never since been the same."
These are the words of R.R. Palmer and Joel
Colton, in their masterful work, "A History of
the Modern World," as they describe the
French Revolution as the "most momentous
upheaval of the whole revolutionary age". In
1799, France fell into the hands of Napoleon
Bonaparte. His impact would contribute to the
spread of the ideals, philosophy, and vision of
the Revolution throughout Europe and the
world. At the end of his reign, in 1815, once
again both Europe and the world would
forever be changed as the modern era of
Western Civilization begins. In this course,
we will survey the events of Napoleon's time
from his early days on Corsica, his
emergence as a military genius, the formation
of the French Imperial System, the Grand
Empire and the Continental System, the
resulting nationalistic movements, throughout
Europe, to his "Waterloo" and final days on St.
Helena.

year. The field trip is to the Energy Education

Meet the Author: Nick Hahn
Nick Hahn
Fee: $ 5
Tuesday, 10/28
10:00 to 11:30 AM
This lecture, by the author of “The Manchurian
Tales,” starts with a brief history of Manchuria.
Later, the discussion will center on the socalled uhl mao zeh, the Russian Koreans that
ended up in Manchuria. There is a very large
population of Russian Koreans in Russia and
other regions of the former Soviet Union.
In general, very little is known about
Manchuria today other than the fact that it is
very cold in the winter and somewhat isolated.
But, the harsh winters aside, Manchuria used
to be a thriving region with a very modern (for
the times) city of Harbin. Harbin was a
Russian city, but then came under Japanese
rule before falling to the Soviets briefly, and is
now under the Peoples Republic of China.
Manchuria, although considered to be part of
China today, is a very different and separate
region with ethnically/racially different people
inhabiting the region.

stores tempt us into buying (or giving as a gift)
that new electronic device. If you want to
travel and read, but don't have space in your

carrying them; or you just want to read on the

an e-reader may be the perfect device for you.
We will take a look at the e-readers available,
what some of the capabilities, pros and cons
are for each, where to get information, and
consider how to set your needs and priorities
as you make your decision. Then we'll look at
what to do once you have one...where to find

the other special capabilities some e-readers
