Two world-class research
facilities. The vision of
creating a meeting point for
people, knowledge, innovation and culture where today
there is just a field. And the
importance of sustainable
housing. That is the story of
Lund’s newest neighbourhood Lund Northeast.

Brunnshög ligger i nordöstra
delen av Lund som är en av
Sveriges äldsta universitetsstäder. Lund ligger i Skåne,
Sveriges sydligaste landskap, och är en del av den
expansiva Öresundsregionen och med Malmö och
Köpenhamn inom nära
avstånd.
LUND’S NEW SITE
Lund Northeast is situated
in the north-eastern part
of the city of Lund, which
is one of Sweden’s oldest
university cities. Lund is in
Skåne, Sweden’s southernmost province, and is part
of the expansive Øresund
Region with Malmö and
Copenhagen close-by.

DEN NYA STADSDELEN
Området ska blomma av
aktiviter för olika sinnen: i
parker, på gårdar, i gränder,
i forskningsanläggningarna.
Visionen är att bygga
ett europeiskt föredöme för
hållbar stadsutveckling. Här
ska människor kunna leva
utan att behöva ha bil och
det ska gå att dela liv och
ägodelar med fler.
I närheten av forskningsanläggningarna byggs det
kontor och andra verksamheter och i övriga Brunnshög en blandad stad med
bostäder i olika upplåtelseformer, skolor, förskolor,
kontor, vårdcentral, affärer,
caféer, restauranger, apotek
och allt som behövs i ett
lokalsamhälle.
Visionen om Brunnshög
byggs främst av tre
komponenter:

The area will flourish with
activities to suit all tastes: in
parks, in courts, in alleys, in
the research facilities. The
vision is to build a European
model for sustainable urban
development. People will be
able to live here without having
to have a car and they will be
able to share their lives and
possessions with others.
In the vicinity of the research facilities, offices and
other enterprises are under
construction, and in the rest
of Lund Northeast, a diverse
town is being built with housing of various forms of tenure,
schools, nurseries, offices, a
welfare centre, shops, cafes,
restaurants, a pharmacy and
everything else you need in a
local community.

DEN HÅLLBARA STADSDELEN
I Brunnshög lever visionen om en stad
som kan producera mer energi än vi
behöver. Och en plats där vi fortsätter
att odla även när stadslandskapet
brett ut sig. Kollektivtrafik med spårväg, cykel och promenader ersätter
de flesta bilresor och vi samutnyttjar
nyttigheter som specialverktyg, hobbygrejor m m. Mötesplatser kan vara
platser där vi delar lärande, skapar
tillsammans och rör på oss – platser
där vi får intressegemenskap som inte
enbart handlar om konsumtion.
THE SUSTAINABLE
NEIGHBOURHOOD
The vision for Lund Northeast is a
town that can produce more energy
than we need. And a place where we
continue to cultivate land even as the
urban landscape spreads out. Public
transport with tramways, bikes and
walking will replace the majority of car
journeys and we’ll share useful things
like special equipment and gadgets for
hobbies, etc. Meeting points can be
places where we learn together, create
together and exercise together – places
where we have shared interests that
are not all about consumption.
DET GODA LIVET
Brunnshögs granne i öst är
Kungsmarkens naturreservat.
I övergången till detta anlägger kommunen en helt
ny park, Kunskapsparken.
Här ska finnas gott om
utrymme för rekreation och
motion. Den nya parken blir
en av kommunens största
satsningar på parksidan
sedan stadsparkens
THE GOOD LIFE
tillkomst för hundra år
sedan. I ett längre perspektiv planeras för så kallade
bygator, det vill säga typiska
småhus i lantlig miljö, i
denna del av Brunnshög.
Tanken är att det ska finnas
förutsättningar för de boende
att driva ekologiskt jordbruk
och odla en del av sina
egna råvaror.
Lund Northeast’s neighbour
to the east is the Kungsmarken Nature Reserve. To
connect to this, the municipality is planning a whole new
park, Kunskapsparken. There
will be plenty of room here for
recreation and fitness. The
new park will be one of the
municipality’s largest park
initiatives since the creation
of the city park one hundred
years ago. In the longer
term, there are plans for
so-called village streets, that
is to say with typical small
houses in a rural setting, in
that part of Lund Northeast.
The idea is that residents
will be able to carry out
organic farming and cultivate
some of their own produce.
FORSKNINGSANLÄGGNINGARNA
Beslutet kom år 2009. I hård
konkurrens med flera länder
i Europa valdes Sverige och
Lund som den plats som är
bäst lämpad för att stå som
värd för världens kraftfullaste neutronkanon. Det
handlar om ESS, European
Spallation Source, en forskningsanläggning som ska bli
ett europeiskt centrum för
studier av materiens allra
innersta uppbyggnad och
funktion. Många liknar den
vid ett gigantiskt mikroskop.
17 nationer står bakom finansieringen. 2019 planeras
anläggningen att vara färdig.
Hit kommer forskare från
hela världen att söka sig.

Även en nationellt finansierad forskningsanläggning
byggs i samma område,
MAX IV. Lunds universitet
står som värd, men tanken
är att forskningsanläggningen ska vara tillgänglig för
forskare från hela världen.
I MAX IV-laboratoriet kommer
acceleratorer att producera
så moderna, intensiva och
kvalitativa röntgenstrålar att
forskarna kommer att se det
som tidigare varit osynligt.
Lunds kommuns vision
har under planeringen och
byggandet av forskningsanläggningarna varit tydlig:
”Vi ska skapa en mötesplats
mellan människor, forskning
och natur som blir en naturlig
del av Lund. En plats som
man vill stanna på.”

THE RESEARCH
FACILITIES
“We will create a meeting
point for people, research
and nature that will become
an inherent part of Lund. It
will be a place where you
will want to stay.”
The decision was made in
2009. Facing tough competition from several countries
in Europe, Sweden and
Lund were chosen as the
place best suited to host
the world’s most powerful
neutron source. This refers
to the European Spallation
Source (ESS), a research
facility that will be a European centre for the study
of the innermost structure
and function of matter. Many
people compare it to a gigantic microscope. Seventeen nations are behind the
funding of the facility, which
is planned for completion in
2019. Researchers from all
over the world will come
here to see it.
A nationally funded
research facility is also being
built in the same area, the
MAX IV. Lund University is
hosting it, but the idea is that
the research facility will be
accessible to researchers
from all over the world. In the
MAX IV-laboratory, accelerators will produce modern,
high-intensity and high-quality
x-rays that the researchers
will be able see that which
could not be seen before.
During planning and
construction of the research
facilities, Lund municipality’s
vision has been clear:
SCIENCE VILLAGE
På området mellan forskningsanläggningarna planeras för
ett Science Village. Det blir
en mötesplats med besökscenter, Science Center, korttidsbostäder för forskare,
filialer för olika universitet
och högskolor i Sverige
och Europa samt kontor för
forskningsanläggningarna
och deras samarbetspartners. På detta sätt byggs
nya broar mellan allmänhet
och forskning.
SCIENCE VILLAGE
In the area between the research facilities, a Science
Village is planned. This will be
a meeting point with a visitor
centre, a Science Centre,
short-term accommodation
for researchers and branch
offices for various universities
and colleges in Sweden and
Europe, together with offices
for the research facilities and
their partners. In this way, new
bridges are being built between
the public and research.
