ADDICTION, COUNSELLING AND YOUTH STUDIES
12
Addiction, Counselling
and Youth Studies
Want to make a difference in your community? Our students do.
They appreciate that WelTec’s addiction, counselling and youth
studies courses are practical and applied, and that you learn
through actual work experience.
What you learn is how to actually help people
in the community. Whether it's helping
a family affected by alcohol, counselling
someone who's mourning or inspiring young
people, your training will help get you ready
to handle these challenges.
Our students like that they learn from people
who have rich experience in these areas and
who are doing research in these fields.
We also work with professional bodies to
make sure what you study is recognised,
applicable and approved. Our close
connection to the sector also offers you
many opportunities to do work experience,
practicums, clinical practice and to get
supervision.
Our study programmes can be designed
to suit you. We know life's busy. We offer
full-time and part-time options at both our
Wellington CBD campus and at Petone, as
well as in Auckland. You can also do some
learning online or do a short course.
WelTec is flexible.
Addiction Studies
Youth Studies
You'll grow your understanding of addiction
– the theory behind it as well as practical
strategies to treat clients and help them
manage addictions. What you learn is based
on tested research and you'll then do work
experience to practise your skills. You can
study at several different levels and you've
got options to do full-time or part-time study.
Want to see young people succeed? The
Bachelor of Youth Development gives you
the skills and on-the-job training to help
do just that. You'll learn and work as you go
with a work placement – if you're already
doing some youth work, you can continue
that, or we'll help you find somewhere you
can use your skills.
Counselling
A range of courses
You'll learn a range of counselling techniques
and therapies to help people. And you'll
put these skills into practice under clinical
supervision. We offer different qualifications.
Choose a diploma, bachelor degree or
graduate diploma. Gain new knowledge or
take your existing skills further.
You can also study courses in:
>Psychology
>Supervision
> Trauma Studies
> Community Support

ENGINEERING
36
Engineering
Our students like our engineering courses because they offer a good combination
of theory and practical work. We work with engineering companies to put
together our courses so you’ll learn the very things you need to know on the job.
Engineering skills are in high demand right
now. What you learn here will cement your
career for years to come.
One of the great things about engineering
at WelTec is you can get the right skills to
get you straight in to the workforce. You
can achieve a Bachelor of Engineering
Technology Degree (BEngTech) in three
years or a New Zealand Diploma in
Engineering (NZDE) or a National Diploma
in Architectural Technology, Construction
Management or Quantity Surveying in
two years.
Who you learn from is also important. Our
students find their tutors to be incredibly
supportive as well as knowledgeable. Our
tutors know why something is done a
particular way, the reasons for it and the
physics behind it. You’ll benefit from all that
real-world knowledge.
Engineering Technology
Keen to become an engineer? Our tutors
will develop your knowledge and practical
skills so you can design and put in place
different types of engineering technology.
In just three years, you’ll gain a Bachelor
of Engineering Technology degree and
you can major in one of three areas – Civil,
Mechanical or Electrical.
Civil Engineering
Architectural Technology
Civil engineers are the engineers we usually
think of – the ones designing and building
bridges, roads, water management systems
and other infrastructure. You can study Civil
engineering as a two-year diploma or for the
three-year degree. It’s hands-on and while
you’re at WelTec, you’ll have the opportunity
to get involved with industry to gain
real-world experience.
Like the idea of working as an architectural
technician or draughtsperson? You’ll get the
skills to design and produce construction
drawings for a building site. As well as
developing your technical drawing skills
using computer-aided design (CAD)
software, you’ll understand architecture,
building methods, materials, and the building
code.
Mechanical Engineering
Quantity Surveying and
Construction Management
Interested in how things work? Mechanical
engineers design, manufacture and maintain
mechanical systems from every day items
to medical technology. You’ll learn in
facilities like our mechatronics production
and automation lab where your tutors will
show you how to use various design and
manufacturing tools so you’re ready for the
workforce.
Electrical Engineering
Learn how to install, test, repair and modify
advanced electrical and electronic equipment
and systems. Your tutors not only have
immense industry experience but they’ve
got close links to industry so the skills you’re
learning are exactly what’s needed.
Learn how to estimate building costs
and how to tender for contracts. Or
do construction planning and project
management. You might even decide to
study both to really boost your skills.
Post Graduate Diplomas*
In 2015 we are starting two new
post graduate diploma programmes:
Mechatronics, and Water and Waste.

Successful applicants studying towards
a diploma or degree may gain work

The Bachelor of Engineering Technology
is an nationally-led qualification offered in
collaboration with five other Institutes of
Technology throughout New Zealand and
forms the basis for a career as an Engineering
Technologist – an area in huge demand across
the country and around the world.
The aim of the New Zealand Diploma in
Engineering is to provide skilled and competent
engineering technicians who: apply engineering
theory to practice, and competently perform
technical operations to the standards, ethical
and professional responsibilities required by
the engineering profession; have a knowledge
sufficient to permit informed, rational decision
making in a specialist field of engineering
and to implement these decisions; will work
collaboratively with construction workers,
clients, authorities, agencies, industry and other
professionals to provide a comprehensive
engineering service in the relevant specialist
area; and have an understanding of all cultures
and in particular an awareness and clear
understanding of the tangata whenua and the
implications of the Treaty of Waitangi and the
Resource Management Act.
Our engineers apply current and emerging
technologies, often in new contexts, or apply
established principles in the development of
new practice. It is an area that suits students
who are looking to combine both the
engineering theory aspect of a career with the
applied and practical component.
It is expected that graduates will attain the
educational underpinnings and work ready
attributes defined in the IPENZ Graduate
Profile for Engineering Technicians. The
graduate profile defined by IPENZ is
benchmarked internationally to the exemplar
graduate attributes for graduates of technician
education programmes recognised under the
Dublin Accord.
Available majors**
Civil Engineering
Civil Engineers work in the design,
construction and maintenance of the
natural and physically built environment.
Electrical Engineering
Electrical Engineers deal with the study and
application of electricity, electronics and
electromagnetism.
Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineers are involved in the
design, manufacturing and maintenance of
mechanical systems.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Information Technology
Our students enjoy getting to grips with IT. Developing analytic and critical
thinking skills. Solving problems. Developing solutions in real environments.
IT courses at WelTec are focused on the practical, applied aspects.
The exact aspects that businesses are looking for.
The majority of your learning takes place in
computer labs, where you will use specialised
facilities such as virtual machines, servers or
our hardware lab with repair, maintenance
and test facilities.
Our tutors are passionate about computers
and technology. They’ll bring out the best in
you, develop your problem-solving skills and
then help put you in touch with employers.
IT skills are very much in demand and the
industry continues to grow at a significant
pace. Businesses out there are always looking
for skilled graduates and we work with those
very companies to make sure our courses
deliver what you need to work in the industry.

more complex stuff you don’t normally deal
with on a day-to-day basis.
A whole range of courses
You can also study courses in particular
areas of IT:

Work is changing,
education is changing …
We are changing …
Choices are now essential
for students, we get that!
70
The Choice Protocol
is WelTec and Whitireia
working together to
give students education
choices that matter.
Our goal is more education choices for
students. Including:
>> More ways to get information
>> More information to help students
choose the best programmes or mix
of programmes
>> Access to a wider range of programmes
>> Different ways to study
>> More campuses to study at
>> More options for further study
>> More connections with employers
We’re making it easier to study with us.
