TEN SELECTED PUBLICATIONS – CHARLOTTE LING BIBLIOMETRICAL ANALYSIS (Web of Science) Ten publications selected from a total of 82 peer-reviewed articles 71 peer reviewed original articles, 11 peer reviewed review articles, 7 book chapters Total number of citations: >4300 times H-index = 29 M-index= 1.9 A full publication list is found at http://www.ludc.med.lu.se/research-units/epigenetics-and-diabetes/groupmembers/head/. I have chosen the following list of 10 publications since they reflect both my work in diabetes and epigenetic research as well as my interest in bioinformatics and statistical analysis of genome-wide human data. I am now established as a world leading expert in diabetes epigenetics and am frequently invited to give keynote lectures and participate in research collaborations. In 2013 a press-release from my group on how exercise changes the human epigenome (publication 3 below) received worldwide media attention (5th place on the AlphaGalileo list of most down-loaded press releases in the world). 1. Elin Hall, Petr Volkov, Tasnim Dayeh, Jonathan Lou S. Esguerra, Sofia Salö, Lena Eliasson, Tina Rönn, Karl Bacos and Charlotte Ling Sex differences in the genome-wide DNA methylation pattern and impact on gene expression, microRNA levels and insulin secretion in human pancreatic islets Genome Biology, 2014 Dec 3;15(12):522. Impact factor: 10.5 Citations: 2 This is the first study identifying genome-wide epigenetic differences in human pancreatic islets from male compared with female donors. These epigenetic differences in human islets contribute to differential gene expression, microRNA levels and insulin secretion between males and females. I was responsible for the study, designed the study, analyzed data and wrote manuscript. 2. Anders H Olsson, Petr Volkov, Karl Bacos, Tasnim Dayeh, Elin Hall, Emma A Nilsson, Claes Ladenvall, Tina Rönn and Charlotte Ling Genome-Wide Associations between Genetic and Epigenetic Variation Influence mRNA Expression and Insulin Secretion in Human Pancreatic Islets. PLoS Genetics, 2014 Nov 6;10(11):e1004735. Impact factor: 8.9 Citations: 6 This is a benchmark study from my group. We demonstrate a strong interaction between genetics and epigenetics that contribute to altered function in human pancreatic islets and potentially the risk for diabetes. 3. Emma Nilsson, Per Anders Jansson, Alexander Perfilyev, Petr Volkov, Maria Pedersen, Maria K Svensson, Pernille Poulsen, Rasmus Ribel-Madsen, Nancy L Pedersen, Joao Fadista, Tina Rönn, Bente Klarlund-Pedersen, Camilla Scheele, Allan Vaag and Charlotte Ling Altered DNA methylation and differential expression of genes influencing metabolism and inflammation in adipose tissue from subjects with type 2 diabetes. Diabetes, 2014 Sep 63; 9: 2962-2976 Impact factor: 9.1 Citations: 17 This is the first study analyzing DNA methylation genome-wide in human adipose tissue from subjects with T2D and non-diabetic controls as well as in monozygotic twins discordant for T2D. We identified numerous epigenetic alterations in subjects with T2D. I was responsible for the study, designed the study, analyzed data and wrote manuscript. 4. Impact factor: 8.9 Citations: 62 This is the first study analyzing DNA methylation genome-wide in human adipose tissue before and after regular exercise. We found that a six month exercise intervention altered the DNA methylation pattern of ~1/3 of all genes in human adipose tissue.
