Family suffers

DT News Network

A
Bahraini family alleges
that its members have
become victims of paranormal
activities after a former
housemaid practised black
magic with an intention to
harm them.
The trouble was brewed
by an African housemaid
who lived with the family for
almost four years, according
to a member.
Um Mohammed, a mother
of three kids, firmly believes
that ordeal had begun hitting
the family the very moment
the maid returned to Bahrain
after spending holidays in her
home country.
“On the day of her return,
I fell ill and was admitted to
Salmaniya Medical Complex.
Until that day, I was a healthy
woman but things started to
change suddenly,” said Ms.
Mohammed.
Subsequently,
Um
Mohammed’s 13-year-old
daughter Fatima also fell ill
and simultaneously lost her
ability of speech. “Nobody
could make out as to what
was happening to her. No
doctor in the town was able to
diagnose her condition,” Um
Mohammed recalled.
Things didn’t end there.
Fatima started showing some
terrific behaviours and among
them were hurting oneself
using knives and sharp blades
apart from speaking gibberish
fluently, elaborated the
mother.
“We didn’t understand
what was happening. But we
could recognise that she was
speaking the language of our
former housemaid.”
The seventh grader wasn’t
able to attend classes as she
showed strange behaviours.

tolerate listening to verses of
the Holy Quran and she would
often scream in a hysterical
way. Despite this, I took her
several times for spiritual and
Quranic treatment here and in
Dubai,” Um Mohammed said.
She said that her nineyear-old son Ali as well
went through same ordeal,
but a slightly less intense
one when compared to
Fatima. After launching
her own investigation, Ms.
Mohammed could make out
that the housemaid had taken
some of her children’s clothes
to Africa when she went
for vacation. “She used my
children’s clothes to practise
black magic. I also found
many talismans and pieces
of children’s clothes and hair
pieces across the house.
However, Um Mohammed
said that Fatima’s condition
has improved of late and the
family is following up with the
Education ministry to reenrol
her at the school. The girl has
already missed a complete
academic year.
Um Mohammed said that
events occurred in her family
was severely traumatic. “Such
things should never happen to
others. I demand the authorities

Readers’ VIEW
Emotional Crisis
Dear editor,
In human history many
individuals have lost the
awareness of their real or true
‘self identity.’
This happens very gradually,
as each individuals progress
in their life journey and have
kept on attaching themselves
to various things and as a
result, they lose the sense of
‘self identity’ in things that
it is not, i.e., identifying with
things that aren’t real and in
a way it can be said that this
took the self far away from
itself.
This internal identity crisis has
led to a universal, external
identity crisis, which has
resulted in an emotional crisis
resulting in lack of peace and
having sorrow in our inner
world as well as in the outer
world.
This inner identity crisis is the
root cause of the multitude of
deformed emotions that exist
inside us like anger, ego, fear,
dependencies and greed all
of which have brought us and
keep on bringing us pain.
Suppose you have just bought
a new expensive car. Once
you start driving it, you have
become excessively attached
to it, i.e., you have started
identifying with it, due to this
false identification.
The first emotion that gets
created inside you is ‘ego.’
If someone would criticize
your car even slightly, you
would react immediately with
‘anger.’ You constantly ‘fear’
any sort of harm to the car.
You even compare it with cars
that others own.
If something negative would
happen, it would affect your
mental state immediately, i.e.,
your happiness has become
dependent on the material
possession.
Your temporary success along
with the recognition that it
brings you from others leads
to the desire of more success
of a similar type, i.e., possess
some more things - bigger
gives a person a fresh and
younger look. Those who
always smile have fewer
or lesser wrinkles than
those people who frown
all the time. So the next
time you have the urge to
frown, remember, it takes 72
muscles to frown and only
14 muscles to smile!
2.You’ll become healthier—
Even the Holy Bible stresses
the value of smiling and
being happy and what it
does to one’s health: “Being
cheerful keeps you healthy.
It is slow death to be gloomy
all the time. (Proverbs 17:22) ;
“Happy people always enjoy
life.” (Proverbs 15:15). For a
person to remain healthy, he
or she must do his best to
be happy all the time and
smile despite his “pain and
sorrow.”
3.You’re doing something
nice to yourself—When you
smile, you are actually being
kind to yourself. According
to Charles Gordy: “A smile
is an inexpensive way to
improve your looks.”
4.You’ll feel good inside and
out—When you smile, good
things happen inside and
outside your body. Your heart
starts to function well and
therefore your blood circulation
improves. As a result, you’ll
feel lighter physically and
emotionally and your mood
improves as well.
5.You’ll look more attractive
and beautiful to others—
When you smile, other people
will find you more attractive
and charming. A smile is
the “best calling card” that
anyone can ever have.
6.You’ll influence others
to smile—According to
Canadian author and TV
Executive Brian Adams: “It
is important how you greet
others. Their first impression
of you is based on your
words, deeds and general
impression. Always smile
and greet people in a nice
and friendly way, regardless
of their attitude towards you.
Life is action and reaction:
Take the initiative. Smile and
-
and better, which is nothing
but ‘greed’, etc.
The seed of all these incorrect
emotions is the wrongIdentification with this newly
acquired ownership -- all of
these wouldn’t exist inside
you, if your relationship were
one of detachment from it.
In this way, we identify with
various objects and people in
the whole day, which leads to
the creation of such emotions
inside us.

Reasons why you should smile
Dear editor,
Smiling can do wonders to
a person but this truth is
often ignored by many of
us. Some people find it hard
to smile and it seems as if
they’re carrying the weight
of the whole world on their
shoulders.
What they don’t know is that
when you smile, you are doing
yourself and others a great
favour. I would like share with
your readers the top reasons
why one should always smile:
1.You’ll look younger than
your age—People who
always smile look younger
than their contemporaries.
Why? It is because smiling

be pleasant and you’ll find
that others will react to your
friendly approach and smile
back at you.”
7.On top of it all, someone
might fall in love with
you—Did you know that
by smiling, there is a great
chance that you will meet
someone and fall in love
with him/her in the long
run? Consider this true story.
My friend Francine used to
work in a courier service
company. She has a smiling
face and she would greet
all customers with a warm
and sincere smile each time
they asked her for assistance
in sending their package to
their loved ones who live
far away. One of her clients
was a handsome Spanish
businessman and every
now and then, he would
drop by her office and visit
his favourite “smiling” lady
behind the package counter
and she would offer him
the best smile and service.
Finally one day, our hero
handed her a red velvet box
with a beautiful diamond
engagement ring inside. He
proposed to her right then
and there because she gave
him joy each time she would
smile at him. Remember, as
the old saying goes: Smile
and the world smiles at you,
weep and you weep alone!

ALEPPO GIRL DEPICTS
HARSH REALITY OF SYRIA
Rana Moussaoui
Beirut
A
nine-year-old girl has
become the star of a
YouTube comedy that depicts
with bittersweet humour the
harsh reality of everyday life in
rebel-held areas of Syria’s Aleppo.
Rasha plays the role of “Umm
Abdo Al-Halabiya”, a housewife
who must make do in a city
devastated by more than three
years of violence, despite daily
bombings and severe shortages.
The 30-episode eponymous
show, shot on location in the city
which was once Syria’s economic
hub, stars only children playing
adult roles and has been viewed
by tens of thousands of Internet
users.
Umm Abdo rants against
President Bashar Al-Assad, takes
swipes at insurgents who have
been trying to oust him and also
mocks Syria’s often overbearing
social norms.
Despite her young age, little
Rasha oozes irony, the trademark
of Syrian comedy as she perfectly
imitates traditional Syrian women
who feed and thrive on gossip.
The chubby-faced, brownhaired actress is cast with other
children who play fighters,
housewives and neighbours
caught up in a conflict that has
changed their lives.
The script is resolutely antiregime and the show is the first of
its kind to give a bold insight into
life in rebel-held areas of Aleppo.
In one episode, Umm Abdo,
wearing her traditional dishdasha
(robe) is chatting on the telephone
with her sister, who lives in a
regime-held neighbourhood of
Aleppo where water cuts have
become a fact of life.
“Do you also wash your clothes
by hand?” she asks, before adding:
“And I thought you loyalists were
spoiled!”. (AFP)

The Islamic State jihadist

a British national carried
out a suicide bombing that
killed a senior Iraqi police
officer.
IS said in a statement
posted online that “Abu
Sumayyah Al-Britani” detonated a truck carrying eight
tonnes of explosives on the

town of Baiji, killing Major
General Faisal al-Zamili.
It identified two more

indicating that they were
from Turkmenistan and

but it was unclear if he was
the same person who carried out Friday’s suicide

any manufacturers are at
an early stage of discovering the benefits of 3D printing,
but one of the clearest strengths
is customisation.
At Normal, consumers can
use a mobile app to photograph their ear, transmit the
shots to the New York startup’s
3D printing facility and then
receive customised earphones
within 48 hours.
David Reis, chief executive at
Israeli-US 3D printer manufacturer Stratasys.
“There’s a lot of venture
capital money coming into the
market.”
But while enthusiasm for the
technology is widespread, some
companies see it as more of a
long-term prospect than a current game changer.
Boeing does not expect to

3D printing for at least 20
After three decades in relative
obscurity, 3D printing, which
employs lasers to “print” objects
from metals or plastics according
to a digital design, has suddenly
become one of the hottest areas of
technology.
The process marries today’s
click-and-go speed with a
made-to-order ethos that recalls the days of visiting the tailor or the cobbler.
The company’s motto: “Normal: one size fits none.”
After three decades in relative obscurity, 3D printing,
which employs lasers to “print”
objects from metals or plastics
according to a digital design,
has suddenly become one of the
hottest areas of technology.
Computer giant HewlettPackard is plunging into the
business, recently announcing
it would put its own ultra-fast
3D printer on the market by
2016, “empowering people to
create, interact and inspire like
never before”.
General Electric chief executive Jeff Immelt has said 3D
printing can help make manufacturing “sexy again”, and
President Barack Obama has
praised it for having “the potential to revolutionise the way we
make almost everything”.
“It’s a little bit confusing and
the excitement is very big,” said
years, though company officials
say that time frame could be
accelerated.
3D printing “is definitely on
the radar screen,” said Dave Dietrich, technical leader for additive metals at the aerospace
giant.
“The systems need to become larger, more repeatable,
that sort of thing,” he said. “We
want to make sure we have an
appropriate amount of testing
and confidence in that process”.
Weighing the hype
3D printing has its roots in
the 1980s when inventor Chuck
Hull began experimenting with
liquid plastics that would harden when they were exposed to
ultraviolet light.
Hull ultimately discovered
that thousands of these plastic sheets could be layered, or
“printed,” on top of each other
and shaped into a three-dimensional object.
He co-founded 3D Systems,
with the company developing software to do 3D printing

from computer images and
building 3D printers.
Even so, Hull in May told
the Quartz website that some
of the talk about 3D printing
“is definitely hype and won’t
happen”.
The recent surge in interest follows the embrace of 3D
printing technology by the
“maker” community -- the
new technology do-it-yourself
creative movement -- said Pete
Basiliere, research vice president at Gartner.
People can now buy their
own 3D printers for less than
$1,000, and enterprise-sized
machines begin at an inexpensive $2,500.
Market researcher Gartner forecasts that worldwide
spending on 3D printing will
rise from $1.6 billion in 2015
to around $13.4 billion in 2018.
Basiliere is especially bullish on applications for medical
devices like hearing aids and
prosthetics, where the technol-

ogy “has life-altering potential”.
The impetus for Normal
came from founder Nikki
Kaufman’s frustration about
poorly fitting earphones and
learning that a custom-made
set through conventional manufacturing could cost $2,000
and take weeks to be made.
Kaufman raised $5 million
from investors and opened her
combined factory/store in New
York City in August. The space
has 10 3D printers but room for
as many as 30.
GE is among the large manufacturers active in 3D printing.
It has been using the technology to make fuel nozzles for its
LEAP jet engines, which will go
into service in 2015.
GE uses a 200-watt laser to
melt together ultra-thin layers
made from metal powders to
make the fuel nozzle. 3D printing allows it to add cooling
pathways to prevent the buildup of carbon deposits that mar
conventionally made nozzles,
making the 3D pieces up to five
times more durable.
3D printing works especially
well for “highly sophisticated
parts that are very difficult to
make in a conventional way,”
said GE Aviation spokesman
Rick Kennedy.
GE is testing 3D printing for
other engine parts, with an eye
toward reducing material and
energy costs. But Kennedy said
adding more components to
the engine will be “very gradual” after extensive testing.
“You tread very carefully because you’re dealing with parts
that absolutely have to work,”
he said.

The old “Money in a Jar” system may no longer work
Banking offshore has many potential benefits; particularly for certain parts of society such as expatriates who
work in The Gulf, for example. Others who may benefit include those seeking flexible company bank accounts, those
seeking privacy of their assets and transactions, and anyone
who requires an international account.
Offshore Financial Centers
As mentioned above, according to lists compiled by the
IMF, OECD and the Financial Secrecy Index/Tax Justice
Network, there are around 70 offshore financial centers active in the world today. However, if you scan your eyes over
such a list you will see real diversity when it comes to the
legitimacy image of those centers.
There are well-respected and known countries such
as Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Ireland, Jersey and
Guernsey on the one hand – and perhaps less economically
strong or stable countries and states such as Costa Rica,
Guatemala, the Philippines, Uruguay and even the Vatican
City on the other!
Therefore when it comes to choosing an offshore bank
account, one of the most important considerations is the
jurisdiction in which the bank is based. Some of the criteria
you can apply to your country search include how financial
services institutions in the jurisdiction in question are regulated, and what investor or consumer protection schemes
are in place for anyone who holds an offshore bank account
therein.
For example, the Isle of Man, which was considered a
reputable offshore haven in the past, has so far failed many
who were affected by the recent banking crisis and subsequent closure of several banks. Their depositor protection
scheme only covered the first £50,000 of saved wealth,
meaning anyone who lost over this sum was not covered
for the full extent of their loss.
As an individual considering opening an offshore bank
account you must ensure you choose a reputable offshore
financial centre, and one where your privacy as well as your
assets will be well protected.
Next week we’ll talk a bit more about who banks offshore,
why and with what banks.

SHARED STANCE
Xi, Putin to ‘harvest the fruits’ of deepening ties
Beijing
hinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian
counterpart Vladimir Putin
promised ever-closer cooperation yesterday as they met for
the 10th time in less than two
years. The two men, who held
talks in Beijing, have increasingly stressed their shared
outlook which mirrors the
countries’ converging trade,
investment and geopolitical
interests. The two sides signed
a series of agreements to step
up their multi-billion-dollar
natural resources collaboration. “Together we have carefully taken care of the tree of
C
Russian-Chinese relations,”
Xi told Putin at the Diaoyutai
state guesthouse in Beijing.
“Now fall (autumn) has set in,
it’s harvest time, it’s time to
gather fruit,” he said.
“No matter the changes on
the global arena, we should
stick to the chosen path to
expand and strengthen our
comprehensive
mutually
fruitful cooperation.” Russia
and China have been brought
together by mutual geopolitical concerns, among them
wariness of the United States.
The two countries often vote
as a pair on the UN Security
Council, where both hold a
veto, sometimes in opposition
to Western powers on issues
such as Syria. Putin said Russian-Chinese cooperation was
“very important for keeping
the world within the framework of international law, to
make it more stable, more
predictable”.
“Me and you have done a lot
for this and I am sure we will
continue to work in this manner in the future,” he added.
Moscow faces harsh Western
criticism and sanctions over
its seizure of Crimea and the
conflict in eastern Ukraine,
which could see Europe reduce its consumption of Russian gas. China also has tense
relationships over territorial
disputes with neighbours such
as Japan, Vietnam and the
Philippines. Under Xi, Communist China has mounted
crackdowns on dissidents and
tightened limits on expression, while critics accuse Putin’s Russia of rights abuses.
China is constantly on the
lookout for resources to power its economic growth. After
a decade of negotiations, the
countries signed a huge 30year gas deal for the ChinaRussia East Route pipeline,
said to be worth $400 billion,
during a visit to China by
Putin in May. Yesterday they
stepped up the engagement,
signing a memorandum of
understanding to develop a
second route to supply China with Russian natural gas,
dubbed the “western” route.
The agreement could lead to
a deal which would see China
potentially becoming the biggest consumer of gas from
Russia, overtaking Europe.
Alexei Miller, head of gas giant Gazprom, told Russian
state television: “Gas deliveries along the western route
will be flowing from fields
in West Siberia, the resource
base that we use now for delivering gas to Europe. This project will help us diversify gas
supply from our traditional
gas producing regions.”

Taipei
aiwan’s petrochemical

Group plans to pour another
$2 billion into its US investment projects as part of efforts to profit from North
America’s shale energy revolution, local media said yesterday. The investment was
spurred by cheap supplies of
natural gas, Wang Wen-yuan,
director of the group, said at
the group’s annual sports day
event on Saturday, according
to the Economic Daily News
and Apple Daily. The ethylene produced from shale gas
costs only around $300 per
tonne, compared with $900
per tonne from oil, he was
cited as saying. Ethylene is
an organic compound widely
used in chemical industry.

LOW PHASE IN CAREER WAS
A LESSON FOR DEEPIKA
Mumbai
ighs and lows are part of everyone’s lives. For actress
Deepika Padukone, it was no different. She says
patience is the key to sail through the low phases.
“As an actress, you have to go through both the phases.
Today, I am doing well, but I have learnt a lot from my
low phase when my films were not doing well,” Deepika
said here.
H
How does she cope with failure?
“I have learned that no matter whatever you do,
you just have to keep some patience and things will
happen,” she added.
After entering Bollywood with a bang with a
double role in “Om Shanti Om”, the model-turnedactress was panned by critics for her choice of films,
for her expressionless face and for her
average dance skills. But she stunned all
naysayers with her performances in
films like “Cocktail”, “Yeh Jawaani
Hai Deewani”, “Chennai Express” and
“Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela”.
Her latest release is “Happy New
Year”, which has turned out to be
a gold spinner at the box office.
It’s her third hit with superstar
Shah Rukh Khan after “Om
Shanti Om” and “Chennai
Express.”

Lawrence won’t go to India to
promote ‘The Hunger Games’
Mumbai
umours were rife that Hollywood actress Jennifer
Lawrence will visit India to promote her film ‘The
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1’. But the film’s
distributors in the country have shot down all
speculations.
“This claim of her travelling to India is untrue.
Jennifer Lawrence is not coming to India,
at least not for the promotions of ‘The
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1’.
These are just rumours created created by
unreliable sources,” Deepak Sharma, chief
operating officer, PVR Pictures, said in a statement.
While the actress will be touring the world to promote the movie,
India is not on the radar for her as of now.
Meanwhile, her film is ready to enthrall fans worldwide. It releases
Nov 21 in the international market, and a week later in India.

Bajirao, who was

gone bald too, so it’s
a welcome change. I
like to do different things
to keep myself amused and

But Ranveer is also keeping
a shendi — a tuft of hair left on
top or on the back of the head.
“It will hopefully grow long
by the end of the film! The shoot
will take a year and Mr. Bhansali
doesn’t want this look to become
public. He has asked me to wear
a hat whenever I go out,” said
Ranveer.

MCCONAUGHEY WON’T
RAISE HIS KIDS
IN HOLLYWOOD
Los Angeles
A
ctor Matthew McConaughey says
he won’t raise his children in
Hollywood because he prefers to be
close to his extended family in Texas.
The actor has always planned
to bring Levi, six, Vida, four, and
22-month-old Livingston up in his
home state of Texas, where they can
be closer to their extended family,
reports contactmusic.com.
“I never had anything against
the idea of bringing my kids up in
Hollywood, but on the other hand, I
do want to base them in Texas. My
mother lives about 25 minutes away
so I get to see her, and the grandkids
get to see her, every weekend instead
of twice a year,” the actor told Hello
magazine.
“I also have two brothers who live
there, so we see family much more
often than we used to and that’s
important to me, especially as
everyone is getting older. My
mother is 82,” he added.
The 44-year-old, who lost
a lot of weight for his role in
the Academy Award-winning
film “Dallas Buyers Club”
- admitted that he loved
indulging in Texan food at
home.
“Plus I like Texas, I like
the space, I like the latitude,
I like the people, I like the
food, I like the common
sense, I like the creativity. I
just like it,” he said.
And the devoted father
admitted he “always” wanted
to be a parent.
Sophia Loren was

Los Angeles
R
enowned actress Sophia
Loren says she was under
pressure to have plastic surgery to fix
her ‘’long nose’’.
The 80-year-old “Two Women” actress
has revealed that movie executives would
tell her to fix certain parts of her face to
make her more attractive on film, reports
contactmusic.com.
‘’I always tried not to listen to
these people.They were saying that
my nose was too long and my mouth
was too big. It didn’t hurt me at all
because when I believe in something,
it’s like war. It’s a battle,” she said.
Loren even admitted that at the time
her film producer husband Carlo Ponti,
who passed away in January 2007, also
encouraged her to go under the knife.
“(Carlo said,) ‘You know the
cameramen, they say that your
nose is too long. Maybe you have
to touch it a little bit.’ And I
said: ‘Listen, I don’t want to
touch nothing on my face
because I like my face. If I
have to change my nose, I am
going back to Pozzuoli (her
home town in Italy).’
‘’At that time, they used
to do noses like a French
nose with a little tip at the
end - they liked that. Can you
imagine me with a nose like
that?” she said.

Eric Hart, a prop maker

a pint-sized Iron Man
costume for his son,

him feel brave’.
Using a paper pattern
he found online, which he
drastically scaled down,
he cut out various sections

before tracing the shapes
on to pieces of foam.
He

eather has a huge impact
on your skin. Whether
hot or cold, skin all over your
body can easily get affected,
causing everything from acne
breakouts or dry patches that
are always itchy!
The weather now is
getting colder, this means
lower humidity which will
make our skin dry. We all
know that the skin deserves
attention since it is one of
the most important organs!
It gives us our appearance,
sense of touch and even the
temperature control.
Prevent your skin from
drying out by using body
lotions that repair the skin
and are hydrating.
We all hate it when our skin
becomes dry and flaky. One
lotion my daughter told me
about is the Eucerin
Plus Intensive Repair
lotion. Eucerin is a huge
brand that offers a variety
of moisturisers and
amazing products.
My daughter swears
by it, and would
never go to bed
without
applying
the Eucerin repair
lotion.
What
it
does
is that it hydrates
and smoothes the
skin. The formula
is fragrance-free, it
looks like a lotion
Professional beautician and make-up artist Laila Bukanan highly
recommends Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair lotion to those who
want to have a healthy, non itchy and great skin during winter.
Read on to find out why she loves this product so much…
What it does is
that it hydrates
and smoothes the
skin. The formula
is fragrance-free, it
looks like a lotion
but feels like a
cream which is a
plus point.
Beauty tips:
Loofah madness!
When cheap loofah
sponges were suddenly
hard
to
find
in
supermarkets unless
combined with a body
wash that I probably
hate, I resorted to
trying out loofah pads
in supermarkets. And
for two times in a
row of buying them, I
regret it.
They just feel horrible
on your skin, they turn a
dirty colour quite fast and
the straws in the pad keep
falling off only proving how
much
of a cheap quality it is. If you
want to be
satisfied with a loofah every few months, invest on joyful baths
for Body Shop’s Bath Gloves. Not only does it dry up easily but
it is sure to scrub you squeaky clean.

Mud packed face
The thing about mud masks
is that they tighten and cool
your face with their very odd
feeling, but they also scare
your partner away and make
them think it reeks of actual
swamp mud.
It is probably an exaggeration
and your partner should just get
over
themselves but yet I still found out that
easy homemade face masks served the best outcomes for soft
skin.
With a mix of yogurt, orange zest and honey, you’ll be
happy that your face is as soft as it can ever be in addition to
the minimal protests from your partner!

Primer layers
but feels like a cream
which is a plus point.
It takes a while to sink
in, but once it does,
it leaves skin feeling
clean and not sticky
at all.
I have recently started using
this product. Something else
I love about it is that it lasts
all day. The exfoliating AHAs
dissolve the dull, ashy patches
of skin without stinging or
irritation.
I would recommend that
you apply sunscreen after using
this product, because AHAs
can make your skin more sun
sensitive.
Eucerin can be found in all
pharmacies.
I’ve never been quite the
expert when it comes to
primers, nor do I know of
how necessary it is. I had
an awful experience with
foundation when I took
the ghostly debut during
my graduation, and trying
the primer for the sake of my
blemishes only proves me right
when it comes to the heaviness of
its feeling
and creaminess on your face.
But primer Smashbox is a smooth application and a nice
base before make-up, which is just easy for me to use without
all the heavy creaminess.

Don’t trust your friends when it comes to lipstick!
THE BEAUTY
B loopers
I’ve learnt that I cant just pull of everything, I’m tired of
beauty products that are mostly aimed at light skinned
people, I have a dark complexion and I find it quite hard
to find products or styles that fit my skin, most of the
time I find myself importing products or even going
online to find the best way to mix products to produce
something that fits my skin color, -Kelly P.
Don’t
trust your friends
when it comes to lipsticks,
seriously, they keep telling that I
can pull off exotic colours like green
or purple but then I see my photos on
Facebook and frown, I’m no longer
experimenting, ill stick to the usual
colours, I don’t need to make statements anymore and i wont
listen to them again
-Ala’a A.
I don’t even know why women aren’t
going for matter foundation, I’ve
switched recently and wow, magic, I’ve
finally beat the weather. Matte foundation just stays longer, and it doesn’t even
break up fast like the regular foundation,
and best of all, it’s not greasy and doesn’t
create blotch effect. -Elle M.

over a French nuclear plant, adding to a spate of mystery
drones over the past month, the nuclear plant at Bugey reported on its website. “The surveillance teams at the Bugey
plant detected the illegal presence of an aircraft similar to a
drone in the air perimeter of the plant,” a statement on the
website said, indicating it happened on Thursday. The Bugey
plant located in east-central France, which has seen four mystery drone flyovers, added that the drone had no affect on the
security or functioning of the facility. The latest flyover brings
to 19 the number of unidentified drones spotted over nuclear
plants since October 19 throughout France -- heavily dependent on nuclear energy with 58 reactors at 19 plants. Police
are clueless as to who is piloting these unmanned aircraft at
a time of heightened vigilance in the face of Islamist extremism. French law bans small, civilian drones from areas such
as nuclear facilities, which are protected by a no-fly zone that
spans a 2.5-kilometre (1.6-mile) radius and a height of 1,000
metres. State-run power company EDF was the first to ring
the alarm bells when it announced it had filed a complaint
with police after detecting the small unmanned aerial vehicles
zipping over seven nuclear plants last month.

push back against the government and developers as their
land comes under threat. A
multi-billion dollar government project will see scarce agricultural land developed, and
thousands uprooted to make
way for townships that officials
say will help to meet demand
for housing. But with only a
tiny sliver of the proposed 614
hectares area reserved for public housing -- and a bigger slice
for commercial complexes as

reach of most Hong Kongers -villagers argue that the project
is designed mainly to enrich
real estate giants.
“Ordinary people like me
can only dream of affording the
apartments that will be built

19-year-old resident of Ma Shi

“So how will this project meet
Hong Kong’s housing needs?”
asks Yung, who regularly camps

hile Catalonia’s leaders

whether a breakaway would be
good for business. Company
bosses kept largely quiet as the
recent independence drive intensified, but with Catalonia
defying Madrid by staging a

Madrid
symbolic independence vote on
Sunday, they are now speaking
out. Some say freeing the northeastern region from the fiscal
yoke of Madrid would mean
lower taxes for Catalans, but others warn it would drive multinational companies away and breed
financial instability. Catalonia
is by far the wealthiest of Spain’s
regions, accounting for nearly
a fifth of the country’s economy
and home to countless small and
medium-size businesses.
Many Catalans say they get
a raw deal from Madrid, paying more in national taxes than
they get back. That grievance
has sharpened over the past six
years of economic hardship.
“We are paying a lot,” said David Poudevida, spokesman for
the pro-independence business

lobby “We Believe in Catalonia”,
which represents some 600 companies. “If we could decide what
to do with that money, there are a
lot of areas of the economy here
that might be doing a lot better.”
Joaquim Gay de Montella, president of the powerful Catalan
business leaders’ federation Foment, admits the region would
run its finances better on its own
-- but says independence is still
not worth the risks. “Catalonia
gets more out of staying part of
Spain because of the stability of
its financial and banking system,”
he said.
Catalonia may be rich, but it
is also heavily indebted, and no
one knows how it would fare on
the international debt markets
if it became independent. EU
authorities have warned that by
breaking from Spain, Catalonia
would drop out of the European
Union. Winning back investors’
confidence would take at least
20 years, said Gay de Montella.
Albert Peters, spokesman for the
lobby No to a Catalonia Outside
Europe, says most companies in
Catalonia want to stay in Spain
but keep quiet about it for fear of
offending the regional authorities. He warned that breaking
away from the rest of Spain, a
major trading partner, would
make it cost more for them to
export there. “Exports to Spain
could be hit by duties and the
banks would lose access to
funding from the European
Central Bank,” said Peters, a
German tax adviser based in
Barcelona.
He added that secession
would drive some companies
to move their bases away from
Catalonia -- as the major publisher Planeta, which employs
10,000 people, has already
threatened to do. As for the
European Union, Catalonia
should remember it did well
out of Spain joining the bloc in
1986, Peters added. Nevertheless, he and Gay de Montella
agree that the Spanish government should forge a new fiscal
pact with Catalonia -- possibly
a special tax regime like those
of two other northern Spanish regions, Navarra and the
Basque Country. Supporters of
independence say that would
be too little, too late.(AFP)

Russian couple registers ‘first

lesbian couple tied the knot in Russia in a quiet ceremony
seen as the first such marriage in the country where gay
unions are illegal, activists told AFP yesterday. The marriage
on Friday went through because one of the women was born
male but is now transgender and undergoing hormone therapy, said Anna Anisimova, an activist working with Vykhod, an
LGBT rights group in Saint-Petersburg. “The official registration by two women happened because one of them is a man
according to the documents,” she said. “Formally it was a wedding between a man and a woman but de-facto it was between
two women.” “It was the first (LGBT wedding) in Russia. Both
brides wore white dresses.” Online pictures from the wedding
showed the smiling pair, one blonde, the other brunette, sporting lacy wedding gowns and holding bouquets as they signed
official paperwork at a Russian civil registry office. Officials at
the registry did not attempt to stop the wedding, but a local
lawmaker fumed that he will contest it. “It’s an insult against
thousands of Russian families. I intend to call for its annulment,” Vitaliy Milonov told AFP. Milonov, a local lawmaker in
the city, has been the most ardent lobbyist of Russia’s notorious
“gay propaganda” law before it went into effect. The 2013 antigay law, which makes it illegal to distribute information about
homosexuality to children, has been decried by the United Nations and seen by homosexuals as de-facto criminalisation of
their orientation.

Paris
rench police were yesterday investigating whether an eightyear-old boy who was caught red-handed about to torch a
parked car was also responsible for arson attacks on four other
vehicles. Authorities apprehended the boy on Saturday morning as he was in the process of setting fire to a stationary car
in the Mediterranean town of Herault near Montpellier. “We
are taking this matter very seriously. An investigation has been
launched and will continue next week to see if this eight-yearold child is also responsible for four burned cars in the same
area,” said the head of the town’s public safety body. Police said
that since the boy had been caught, there had been no further
attacks. “Was the boy the arsonist? Or was it a copycat attack
after he saw the other four cars burned? We don’t know; the
police will try and work that out,” said the town’s mayor, JeanPierre Rico. The boy was returned to his family as “prosecutors cannot take legal action” against an eight-year-old child, a
judicial source said. “However, given his profile and his family
environment, we must decide whether a judge needs to order a
psychiatric evaluation.”

ashington will prioritise its own plans for an Asia-Pacific
free trade agreement, a top US official said yesterday,
even as China seeks to elevate a broader vision for the region.
The rival trading powers’ ideas on opening markets have injected an element of discord at the annual gathering of leaders from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) bloc,
hosted this year by Beijing. US Trade Representative Michael
Froman said Washington would remain focused on plans it is
pursuing outside APEC for a 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which excludes China. “TPP of course is the major
focus of our economic pillar of the rebalance to this region,” he
said, referring to the Obama administration’s stated intention to
give greater attention to the Asia-Pacific. China, however, wants
the 21-member APEC meeting to endorse a stronger commitment to the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) idea,
a longer-term concept for the entire region that would build on
the TPP and other free-trade initiatives. Some Chinese analysts
have framed TPP as an attempt to check Beijing’s growing economic clout -- allegations Washington dismisses. In the lead-up
to APEC, China’s official media have touted FTAAP as a solution to the current “spaghetti bowl” of free trade proposals, an
apparent swipe at TPP. A draft APEC summit communique
calls for steps to “translate the FTAAP from a vision to reality”,
and agrees to launch a “strategic study” on how to achieve that.
But Froman stressed that did not signify “the launch of a new
organisation, it’s not the launch of a new FTA (free trade area)”.

Germany cheers 25 years since Berlin Wall’s fall
MERKEL HAILS
BERLIN WALL’S FALL

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said yesterday
that the fall of the Berlin Wall
25 years ago was a message
to a conflict-torn world that

spoke as Germany celebrated
the milestone on November 9,
1989, that ended its Cold War
division by throwing a huge
open-air party at Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate. More
than a million people were ex-
pected in the reunited capital,
many flocking to see rock stars
and anti-communist dissidents
on stage amid fireworks to recall the peaceful breach of the
despised barrier. Merkel, 60,
who grew up in the East, said:
“The Berlin Wall, this symbol
of state abuse cast in concrete,
took millions of people to the
limits of what is tolerable, and
all too many beyond it. It broke
them.” “Little wonder that after the border opened, people
took apart the hated structure
with hammers and chisels.” In
an unusually emotional speech
at a memorial for Wall victims,
Merkel said: “We can change
things for the better -- that is the
message of the fall of the Berlin
Wall.”
This is true for Germany
and “for the people in Ukraine,
Syria, Iraq and in many, many
other regions of the world
where liberty and human rights
are threatened or being trampled,” she said. Merkel said the
events inspired hope that the
world can tear down “walls of
dictatorship, violence, ideology
and hostility”. “Too good to be
true? A daydream that will burst
like a bubble? No, the fall of the
Wall has shown us that dreams
can come true.” The ugly scar
the Wall once cut through Berlin has been marked by an art
installation, a string of nearly
7,000 illuminated white balloons tethered along a 15-kilometre (nine-mile) stretch of its
former 155-kilometre path. To
symbolise the tumultuous day
the barrier first cracked open,
the balloons will float into the
sky in the evening to the stirring strains of Beethoven’s “Ode
to Joy”, the anthem of the European Union. Later the unofficial Wall anthem “Heroes”,
which David Bowie recorded
in a studio near the barrier
in then-West Berlin, will be
performed by British singersongwriter Peter Gabriel. The
celebrations started on a sombre note with a church service
and ceremonies for the at least
389 victims of the border, who
were shot, blown up by mines
or otherwise killed as they
tried to escape the East. (AFP)

a tremendously exciting dayto-night race. Leading the field
will be the Le Mans Prototype

including Toyota Racing, Audi

Hybrid racing cars, which are
among the most technologically advanced in the world. The
LMP1-Lightweight (LMP1-L)
squads of Lotus and Rebellion

the field, while in the LMP2
class will be G-Drive Racing,
Oak Racing, KCMG and SMP

Porsche Team Manthey and
Aston Martin Racing will be
fielding two challengers apiece;

all the teams’ equipment were
scheduled to be shipped to Bahrain for the Le Mans-inspired
race which contain the race

behind the scenes has already
been frantic, with only a twoweek break in between the sixth

The first set turned into a

Londres
ei Nishikori made a dream
start to his ATP Tour Finals debut as the Japanese star
clinched a surprise 6-4, 6-4 victory over Andy Murray yesterday. Nishikori is the first Asian
singles player to qualify for
the prestigious season-ending
tournament at London’s O2

champion Murray at the fourth
attempt. The 24-year-old had

those losses to Murray, but the

and he has improved greatly
since then. He took the game to
Murray right from the start and
hit 20 winners in a 95-minute
triumph that gives him a good
chance of qualifying for the
semi-finals from a group that
also features Roger Federer and
Milos Raonic, who meet later
on Sunday. “Maybe in the beginning I was a little bit tight,
but I started feeling better and
the second set was almost perfect,” Nishikori said. “I knew I
had to be more aggressive than
usual and that’s how I won. It’s
my goal to go to the semi-final
and final.”
It was the latest memorable
moment in a breakthrough
year for Nishikori, who reached
his first Grand Slam final at the
US Open in September and became the first Asian man to finish in the world’s top 10 since
1973 thanks to a personal best
52 match wins this season. Although he lost the final in New
York to Marin Cilic, Nishikori
has continued to shine in the
closing weeks of the season,
winning tournaments in Kuala
Lumper and Tokyo to climb to
fifth in the world, making him
the highest ranked Asian male
ever. In contrast, Murray had
spent the last two months jetting across the globe on a
gruelling schedule of six
consecutive tournaments
in a successful bid to
qualify for the Finals after he fell out of the top
10 for the first time in six
years. The Scot chalked up
titles in Shenzhen, Vienna
and Valencia and claimed he
had played his way back into

Newcastle into top half as Baggies beaten

ewcastle United’s impressive revival continued
as they climbed into seventh

start of the season, extend
their unbeaten league run
to five straight games -- a
sequence that now includes
four successive victories.
Perez put Newcastle ahead
on the stroke of half-time

Janmaat’s cross. Janmaat was
again the provider as Newcastle doubled their lead in the
62nd minute. The full-back’s
cross was not properly cleared
and Newcastle captain Coloccini found space in the box to
head home as manager Alan

grip on the game.
Elsewhere, Stoke City also

the table with a 2-1 victory

that ended the north London
club’s run of three straight
wins in all competitions.
Former Barcelona star Bojan

give Stoke a sixth-minute lead
at White Hart Lane when he
cut inside from the left wing
and ran at the retreating Spurs

the area and squared the ball

Mauricio Pochettino’s side
might manage a draw were
