Mumbai, Nov 5 (PTI):
The benchmark BSE Sensex
breached 28,000-mark for the first
time and the NSE Nifty hit a new peak
of 8,363.65 in early trade today on
sustained fund inflows amidst optimism
over encouraging corporate earnings.

prices which dipped to its lowest

also influenced trading sentiments,
brokers said.

ndian Defence Minister Arun Jaitley today said
that the government had sent clear signals that it
is willing to speak to Pakistan, normalise relations;
but there are red lines.
‘We want to talk, but you must decide if you want to
speak to our Foreign Secretary or those who want to
break India,’ Jaitley said in the capital.
He said retrospective taxation policy was a bad
idea and undoing is not enough. However, Jaitley
maintained that no steps will be taken to give contrary
signals.
The FM added that a lot needs to be done to improve
the Indian economy which has seen stagnation in the
last couple of years.
Asserting satisfaction with government’s performance so far, Jaitley said that there are bound to be
certain obstructions and hurdles but one need not be
bothered much about those.
Meanwhile, differences between the BJP and the
Shiv Sena over forging an alliance in Maharashtra
continued on Wednesday, with sources indicating that
the latter may not join the State government after all.
The BJP and the Shiv Sena have so far failed to
resolve their differences over terms for the latter’s
participation in the ministry, and the main sticking point
is deputy Chief Minister’s post.
TALIBAN THREAT TO
NARENDRA MODI
q Pak terror group vows to take revenge on PM
New Delhi, Nov 5:
After claiming responsibility for
the suicide bombing at the Wagah
border in Pakistan that killed at
least 60 people and left over 110
injured, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter
group of the Pakistani Taliban, has
directly threatened Prime Minister
Narendra Modi.
The suicide bombing near Wagah
check point in Pakistan has drawn
wide condemnation in India, with
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
tweeting: ‘Terror attack in Pakistan
near Wagah Border is shocking. I
strongly condemn such a dastardly
act of terrorism.’
Responding to Modi’s condemnation on microblogging website Twitter,
Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for
JamaatulAhrar, said: ‘You are the
killer of hundreds of Muslims. We wl
take the revenge of innocent people
of Kashmir and Gujrat (sic).’
According to a news agency, Indian
and Pakistani intelligence agencies
High alert
A high alert has been
sounded at the Kolkata Port,
with central agencies warning of a terror threat. Two
Indian Navy warships, INS
Khukri and INS Sumitra,
that had docked at Kolkata
for Navy week celebrations,
have gone back to sea.
A Defence Ministry statement said they had been
‘withdrawn for undisclosed
operational reasons.’
had both picked up plans for an imminent strike on their Wagah land
border ahead of the blast. Heightened
security possibly averted a more devastating attack.
A Pakistani intelligence official said:
‘It appears the bomber wanted to
target ground zero where Pakistan
and India border officials stand together to perform the flag ceremony
but he could not enter due to tight
security on the last gate. Had he
managed to reach the place, there
would have been the worst scenario
at both sides.’
Meanwhile, an official from the
Research and Analysis Wing
has been quoted as saying by
the news agency that the blast
at the border was squarely
aimed at Pakistan’s security
forces.
‘It is reprisal attacks against the
establishment there. It’s been a long
time coming, ever since the TTP (the
Pakistan Taliban) has been under
pressure,’ he said.
He said the attack may have been
an attempt by al Qaeda’s new Indian
Subcontinent wing to demonstrate its
potential at a time when the network
has been overshadowed by Islamic
State, which anecdotal evidence
suggests is gathering support in
South Asia.
‘They have tried to focus on large
casualties and a sensational incident,’
he said.
An Indian official said the Home
Ministry received two intelligence
warnings in mid-October of possible
attacks along the border or at the
Golden Temple in the nearby city
of Amritsar, the most sacred site for
Sikhs.
‘Based on these reports the BSF
was ordered to upgrade security and
a red alert was also issued,’ said a
senior Home Ministry official, who
declined to be named because he
was not authorised to speak to media.
‘Warnings from intelligence departments are a regular feature but this
time we had a clear input that the
retreat and Golden Temple could
be prime targets. This message was
conveyed to the local police.’
A teenaged suicide bomber blew
himself up on 2 November near the
Wagah border in Pakistan’s Lahore
district, minutes after the popular
flag-lowering ceremony at the main
India-Pakistan land border crossing.

NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 5:
Apparently annoyed with derogatory
remarks made against them by senior
office-bearers of Nadigar Sangam, a
section of actors have preferred to
lodge complaint with president of the
sangam Sarath Kumar.
In the past few days, videos of
speeches by a veteran actor (known
for his character and villain roles and
who is also a senior office-bearer of
the Nadigar Sangam), has been doing rounds in social media networks.
Addressing drama artistes in various
places, he allegedly spoke ill of a few
artistes. Also, the speech by another
senior member has left bad taste
among a section of senior actors.
Speaking to News Today on condition of anonymity, a senior actor, said,
‘It is sad that a few senior members
of the association are making such
remarks against us for no reason.
Initially we did not take it serious. But
they repeatedly speaks ill of us in public forums, which has hurts us a lot’.
‘We are like a family in cinema. To
speak bad of one another will spoil the
environment and create needless animosity. To put an end to it, we are planning to knock the doors of our association
president Sarath Kumar’, he added.
Meanwhile another said, ‘We have
always maintained cordial relationship
with all in the sangam. We always abide
by their decisions. But wonder why they
feel so insecure about us and make
such remarks against us’.
We hope Sarath Kumar would intervene and bring an amicable solution
to the whole issue, he added.

NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 5:
The newly-appointed Director General of Police (Law and Order) of Tamilnadu, Ashok Kumar assumed office this morning.
An officer of the 1982 batch, Ashok has served extensively in both State and
Central government departments and has had a long stint with the CBI. After
assuming charge, Ashok said the safety and security of people of the State
would be given top priority. Outgoing DGP K Ramanujam also took charge as
the new Advisor to the State government this morning.
A grand farewell was organised at the St’ Thomas Mount grounds yesterday for
Ramanujam who held the top office for two years and served the department for
more than 35 years. Interestingly, Ramanujam retired the same day his father,
Kuppuswamy had joined the Madras police regiment, 4 November 1946.
In his farewell speech, Ramanujam mentioned that the Tamilnadu police
force was the first in the country to deploy Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for law
and order surveillance as well as for crime investigations.

ambiar Road, next to Corporation Colony, in
Kodambakkam has been topped with cement
about three months back. This has lowered the
level of Nambiar Lane which is a narrow stretch
extending from Nambiar Road.
The low level of the road has brought in number
of problems for the residents. With rain, water
stagnation is an undeniable addition to their woes.
‘Officials laid the surrounding roads about three
months back. They must have raised the level of
the Nambiar Lane along with the other roads, but
they failed to do that. As a result of that, we are now
suffering due to the road level. Water stagnation
has led to a number of problems in its own regard.
Since the road level is lower compared to the
surrounding ones, even the slightest rain spell
causes water stagnation. Also, water from other
roads drain into Nambiar Lane since it is at a lower
level. For students and office goers the problem is
elevated, they have to risk getting their uniforms
dirty in the stagnant water. We have repeatedly
complained to the authorities, they have a fixed
answer- ‘work will be completed in fifteen days’. I
plead with them to kindly take notice and solve our
problems’, says a resident of Nambiar Lane who
seeks anonymity.
Reportedly, the residents gave a written complaint
(signed by ten residents) to the Corporation officials
but the issue has not yet been addressed to.
‘Water logging also paves in way for mosquito
problems during monsoon. Motorists find it difficult
since the road level is low and waterlogging
misleads them about the level of the road. Accidents
can occur due to this. Senior citizens can not walk
through the road without someone accompanying

slippery as well’, says Naseema, from the same
locality. A resident also alleged that some of the
residents break the manhole so that the stagnant
water drains into it.
Residents also complained that civic workers don’t
enter Nambiar Lane to collect garbage or clean
the road since the road is water logged always.
‘Usually the cement roads are relaid after a period
of ten years. The problem with Nambiar Lane is
that the surrounding roads were tar roads. While
topping them with cement, the level automatically
raised higher than Nambiar Lane, which is a cement
road already. So now we are getting permission to
relay the road with cement to bring it to the level
of surrounding roads. Work will be completed in a
month’s time at the most’, says an official from the
Corporation.

Rs 18.50 for half litre. But many retail
shops are selling it for Rs 20. Frustrated people are now rushing into
the offices requesting for milk cards
as it is the cheapest among all now.’
Suguna, a home maker lamented,
‘Coming from a middle class background and a joint family, it is difficult
for us to make both the ends meet.
Now we have to cut down from
three to two packets of milk’.
The State government had recently announced the rise in milk
price, following demands from
milk producers to increase the
procurement price. Accordingly, the
government hiked the price of one
litre toned milk from Rs 24 to Rs 34.

WALKING AT EASE
Students of a school on
Venkatesan Street are a

can be found loitering
around the (overflowing)

NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 5:
As the nation takes a cue from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swacch
Bharat’ campaign and gets down to work with regard to cleanliness, the
neighbourhood seems to be lagging behind. While many areas resemble
garbage dumping zones, the greatest fear is due to the stray animal menace
around such areas.
One example is Venkatesan Street in Selaiyur. There is a kindergarten
school on the stretch and there are two bins, which are overflowing most of
the time. Not only does the garbage produces foul smell but also has become
a place for flies to breed. Another issue is stray animal menace around such
places. The litter attracts a large number of stray dogs and cows, which pose
a threat not just to the kids of the school but residents of Venkatesan Street
as well as Bethelpuram.
‘I have been noticing this problem for long and nobody seems to be bothered. The problem of stray dogs biting people is nothing new to us here and
still authorities seem to be careless. Imagine the extent of danger that this
garbage, that is all littered around the bins, poses to the houses in the vicinity,
especially children,’ said Niranjan Thomas, a resident of Arignar Anna Street.
A few other local residents said that repeated pleas have been made to the
civic authorities about garbage clearance and they hoped that a solution would
be found at the earliest.

Rolls-Royce to
axe 2,600 jobs
Rolls-Royce, the maker of aircraft engines, said on Tuesday
that it plans to shed 2,600 jobs,
mainly at its aerospace division,
over the next 18 months to cut
costs.
The British company said headcount reduction was necessary
following the completion of development programmes for engines
used to power Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350 passenger
planes.
It also hinted in its statement at
further cuts to a global workforce
currently at 55,000.
The announcement to reduce
staff numbers by almost five percent comes after Rolls had last
month slashed its earnings forecasts partly as a result of Western
trade sanctions against Russia
over the Ukraine crisis.

Ivory Coast’s Prime Minister
Daniel Kablan Duncan on Tuesday invited Indian firms to invest
in the West African nation and
asked businesses to diversify the
trade basket to boost commerce.
Côte d’Ivoire, also known as

primary articles such as farm produce, while its imports consist of
finished items such as pharmaceuticals, automobiles and plastics among others.
Duncan said the bilateral trade

to improve substantially.

He added that in the past the
central bank hasn’t been able to

Govt jobs to be opened
up for private sector
New Delhi, Nov 5 (PTI):
In a step to rope in professional
experts from the private sector, the
Centre has asked all ministries to
carry out an exercise for identifying posts that require people with
specialised or technical knowledge.
Keeping in line with Prime
Minister Narendra Modi’s
promise to the electorate,
the government may also
amend the recruitment rules
in government services for
accommodating such experts
on contractual basis with salaries matching that in the private
sector, official sources said.
According to the sources, the aim
of such a move is to ensure entry of
best talents into higher government
posts and to bring in a higher sense
of participation among the citizens
who would have an opportunity to
contribute in the higher echelons of
the government provided they possess the right qualifications and ex-
perience required for a job.
This option is also available for government employees, and, in case, a
government employee opts for an
appointment on salary equivalent to
that of private sector, he or she will
have to resign or seek premature retirement before
applying for the post.
‘Candidates selected
from outside the government will invariably
be appointed on contract for a fixed tenure
and their remuneration
will be for a fixed term
that could, however, be
renegotiated once the term expires at the option of the employing
agency’, according to a concept note
prepared by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

World Bank’s tips on how to improve country’s rating
Mumbai, Nov 5 (PTI):
The World Bank, which recently
ranked India 142nd in its ease of doing business list, on Tuesday said
the ranking will improve by at least
50 notches if the country includes
the best practices followed at the
State level.
‘A few years back the World Bank
did a sub-national ‘ease of doing
business exercise,’ looking at how
different States perform. What we
found was that if all of the country’s
best practices were put together,
the ranking would increase by more
than 50 places’, World Bank senior
country economist Denis Medvedev
said.

to such posts be done through the
Union Public Service Commission
(UPSC) and the government employees applying for the posts, at the
time of applying, be given the option
to continue in the normal pay and allowances or receiving market driven
salary, on selection.
The Pay Commission’s recommendations have been examined
in consultation with the Department
of Expenditure and the UPSC. The
UPSC, which selects IAS, IPS, IFS
and other senior officials for the government, can make selection for all
posts so identified, according to the
note. The scheme, the Central Pay
Commission felt, will facilitate infusion of younger persons that have
excelled in their field and break the
relations between seniority and selection to such posts with high emphasis on performance.

Chennai, Nov 5:
V-Guard on Tuesday announced its
results for the second quarter ended
30 September, 2014 of the financial
year 14-15. According to a press release, the net revenue from operations for the second quarter, ending
30 September, 2014-15 fiscal, were
Rs 431.25 crore; an increase of 29 per
cent over the corresponding period of
last financial year (Rs 334.04 crore)
The profit after tax for the quarter,
ending 30 September, 2014-15 fiscal, was Rs 19.17 crore; showing an
increase of 32 per cent over corresponding period of last financial year
(Rs 14.48 crore). The growth in topline
and bottom line is aided by strong performance in non-south and superior
product mix. During the quarter under
review, three new models of mixer
grinder were introduced.
Managing director Mithun. K. Chittilappilly said, ‘The company maintained growth momentum during the

Indian-origin bizman
launches new service in UK
London, Nov 5 (PTI):
A London-based Indian-origin entrepreneur has launched a unique
‘pay-what-you-want’ money remittance service that abolishes compulsory fees.
India-born Rajesh Agrawal believes his Xendpay online platform
will save customers in the developing world £60
million over
the next five
years.
India is the
largest recipient of remittances in the world, with $71 billion
sent last year. World Bank figures
show global migrants last year sent
home 250 billion pounds in remittances to developing countries with
an eight per cent increase predicted
for 2014.
‘It is a social imperative that the
cost of sending money abroad is
significantly reduced’, said Agrawal,
who announced the launch here this
week.
‘The remittance industry takes far
more than it needs to in profit and in
doing so drains away a lot of money
that would otherwise reach those in
developing nations. By launching a
no fees, best rate transfer service I
hope to challenge and change this’,
he added.
Under the Xendpay model, customers can send anything from one
to 100,000 pounds and will be asked
to ‘tip’ what
they want for the
service even if it’s
nothing
and
will also be
given the best
exchange
rates
usually reserved for
multinational corporations.
‘I set up Xendpay not to be the biggest or to make money but to make
money transfer better and cheaper.
I believe people will recognise the
value in what we are doing both financially and socially and that as a
result the discretionary ‘tips’ model
will work’, explains Agrawal.
The Xendpay model has been accepted as a Clinton Global Initiative
(CGI) Commitment to Action, with
an objective to save people sending money through the platform.
‘Global data centre
traffic to triple by 2018’
New York, Nov 5 (PTI):
Data centre traffic is poised to triple by 2018 from the
current levels as almost half of the world’s population
goes online, a Cisco study said on Tuesday.
The US-based networking solutions giant’s fourth annual Cisco Global Cloud Index (2013-2018) forecast
a strong growth of cloud traffic, workloads and storage with the private cloud segment
emerging significantly larger than
public cloud.
Cisco said: ‘Over the next five
years, the study projects data centre traffic to nearly triple, with cloud representing 76 per cent of total data centre
traffic. By 2018, half of the world’s population will have
residential Internet access and more than half of those
users’ (53 per cent) content will be supported by personal cloud storage services’. The study forecast that
global data centre traffic will nearly triple from 2013 to
2018 with a combined annual growth rate (CAGR) of
23 per cent, growing from 3.1 zettabytes / year in 2013
Infosys helps
FPWC
NT Bureau
to 8.6 zettabytes / year in 2018. A zettabyte equals a
trillion gigabytes, the firm added.
‘The 8.6 zettabytes of data centre traffic predicted for
2018 is equivalent to streaming all of movies (approximately 500,000) and television shows (three million)
ever made in ultra-high definition (UHD) 250,000
times’, the study said.
Global cloud traffic is growing faster than the
overall global data centre traffic. In 2013, cloud
accounted for 54 per cent of total data centre
traffic, and, by 2018, cloud will account for 76
per cent of total data centre traffic.
Data centre traffic includes data centre-touser traffic along with data centre-to-data
centre traffic and traffic that remains within data centres, it added. By 2018, 53 per cent of all residential
Internet users globally will use personal cloud storage
and the average consumer cloud storage traffic per
user will be 811 megabytes per month by 2018, compared to 186 megabytes per month in 2013, the Cisco
study said.

Benzema goal

q Real Madrid, Dortmund ease into last 16
Paris, Nov 5 (AFP):
Holders Real Madrid and 2013 finalists
Borussia Dortmund eased into the last 16 of
this season’s Champions League with two
group games to spare yesterday.
Madrid recorded their fourth win in four
Group B games, and their 12th consecutive
victory in all competitions, beating Liverpool
1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu thanks to a
first-half Karim Benzema goal.
Meanwhile, Dortmund shrugged aside their
dreadful domestic form to maintain their perfect record in Group D, crushing Galatasaray
4-1 in Germany.
Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid and Bayer
Leverkusen won to close in on qualification
for the last 16 while Juventus, Basel and
Benfica all recorded precious victories but
Arsenal threw away a three-goal lead to draw
3-3 with Anderlecht in London.
Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid utterly outclassed
Liverpool in winning 3-0 at Anfield two weeks
ago and a similar outcome appeared on
the cards when visiting manager Brendan
Rodgers named a side missing regulars
such as captain Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling.
However, in the end the only goal of the
game came in the 27th minute, Benzema
converting a Marcelo cross at the back post.
That meant Cristiano Ronaldo remains on 70
Champions League goals for now, one short
of the competition record still held by Madrid
great Raul. ‘I think we played well, albeit the
tempo wasn’t that high,’ said Ancelotti, while
Rodgers praised Liverpool’s display.
‘I thought we were very unfortunate not to
get something from the game. You see many
teams come here and the game is over after
20 minutes. For our attitude and courage to
play I thought we could have got at least a
draw,’ he said.

Clarke looks for better
luck in SA ODI series
Melbourne, Nov 5:
A disappointed Michael Clarke arrived home from United Arab
Emirates on Wednesday eager to shake off Australia’s test series
loss to Pakistan and begin his side’s World Cup buildup in a oneday series against South Africa.
Clarke’s side were hammered by Pakistan in the two-Test series,
losing the first game in Dubai by 221 runs and second in Abu Dhabi
by 356 runs for a first series loss to Pakistan in two decades.
The 33-year-old captain also struggled with the bat -- 57 runs in
four innings -- but he was keen to refocus his attentions to the five
match series against the Proteas, who are the top-ranked one-day
side in the world.
‘I’m extremely disappointed with our results,’ Clarke told reporters at Sydney airport. ‘I’m more disappointed with my personal
performances.
‘But we have had a couple of days to think about things and in
a week’s time we have a really important one day series against
South Africa.
‘I guess I see that as a positive with the quick turnaround. We’re
back on the field. I know it’s a different format but in Australian
cricket, winning is what’s important.’
Clarke, Australia’s best batsman for the last three years, was
somewhat taken aback at having to field a question over whether
his captaincy was in jeopardy.

Chennai, Nov 5:
Chennaiyin FC player-coach Marco
Materazzi praised the players for
showing great reslience to fight back
and secure a draw against Atletico De
Kolktala in a crucial ISL game at the
Nehru stadium here last night.
Talking about the red cards at the
post match press conference, Materazzi said, ‘I won’t comment about
the refereeing. All I know is that we
showed great character and team
spirit to come back in the end. The
fans helped us to get back into the
game.’
Asked asked about the change in
strategy after being down to 10 men,
the Italian said, ‘Yes it is never easy
when you are down to 10 but we
adapted well. I felt Mendoza had the
energy and pace to last the whole
game so I kept him on and replaced
Maurice who only recently joined the
team.’

Elano Blumer slots home Chennaiyin FC’s equaliser in the match
against Atletico De Kolkata on Tuesday.
Kolkata with Elano Blumer scoring a
late penalty.
The game had a lot of physicality to
it, with Kolkata receiving a massive
advantage at 33 minutes when goal
keeper Shilton Paul was sent off for
a tackle on Mohammed Rafi who was
in a clear goal scoring position. To
maintain its defensive line Chennai
substituted debutante forward Jean
Maurice for reserve goal keeper Gen-
naro Bracigliano. Taking advantage
of the situation, Luis Garcia stepped
on to the penalty spot scoring his first
goal of the Indian Super League.
In the later part of the game Kolkata were reduced to 10 men from
a poor referee decision after Joffre
Mateu was brought down inside the
box and was given a second yellow
for diving.

Mumbai, Nov 5 (PTI):
It seems the much-awaited Sachin Tendulkar autobiography, ‘Playing It My Way’ has already caused
a few ripples and brought a bolt or two into the
Indian cricket. In the build up to the book launch,
his contemporaries have started opening their accounts on what is right or wrong.
In an interesting turn of events, Rahul Dravid has

first home game, forward John
Mendoza was brought down by
Kingshuk Debnath on the 90th
minute. Elano Blumer scored the
penalty with a low shot taking his
tally to six goals in the tournament.
The standout teams so far in the
inaugural edition of the football
league, Atletico de Kolkata and
Chennaiyin FC occupy the top two
spots in the points table sharing a
point each from their clash.
Chennai player Harmanjot Khabra
said after the game, ‘It was a great
challenge to play against world
class midfielders like Borja and Garcia. But when you have someone
like Marco alongside you are more
confident. We played as a team and
got a point in the end.’
He had also a good word for the
Chennai crowd and said: ‘The crowd
kept cheering for us throughout and
inspired us to come from behind and
earn a point. We are expecting a
great atmosphere against NorthEast
also on Tuesday.’

Hyderabad, Nov 5 (PTI):
Coming out strongly in support of Sachin
Tendulkar in his criticism of Greg Chappell,
former India cricketer VVS Laxman said the
dressing room atmosphere during the Aussie’s two-year tenure as national team coach
was the ‘worst.’
V V S Laxman
Reacting to a series of startling allegations Sachin Tendulkar
made in his autobiography Playing It My Way, Laxman said he
totally believed in what the iconic batsman had written in his
book. ‘I think 2006 was a very tough period for Indian cricket. The
dressing room atmosphere was probably the worst. I remember
in 2006 when I was added for the last one day game in South

India issues
warning to Pak
New Delhi, Nov 5:
Union Finance and Defence Minister Arun Jaitley today said India
would like to normalise relationship
with Pakistan, but the neighbouring
country has to decide whether it
wants to (hold talks or not).
Speaking at the World Economic
Forum’s India Economic Summit,
he said the government sent clear
signals that it is willing to speak to
Pakistan, normalise relations; but
there are red lines.
‘We want to talk, but you must
decide if you want to speak to our
Foreign Secretary or those who want
to break India,’ he said.
Jaitley voiced optimism that the
measures initiated by the government
will soon show results. ‘I am quite satisfied with the beginning made by the
government. We will take time to rectify
the economy,’ Jaitley said. Stating that
India is now being viewed as a global
investment destination, Jaitley added,
‘People are now getting convinced that
India is a place to invest in.’
Criticising UPA government’s move
to introduce retrospective taxation,
Jaitley said, ‘Retrospective tax was a
bad idea which damaged the economy. We should not take a step which
sends contrary signal to investors.’
‘A lot of work can be done within the
political framework. Indian administers need to change their mindset,’
he said.

Grain mountains and hungry millions
tend to co-exist. Our universities should
analyse the reasons for such a situation
and help to apply appropriate public
policy measures which can help to end
hunger in our country, chairman and
chief mentor of MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, M S Swaminathan
said today.
Speaking at the 35th annual convocation of Anna University here, he said,
‘Even the latest Global Hunger Index
published by the International Food

prevelance of hunger as measured by

and child mortality.’
Taking about how 55 per cent of the
TB cases in India are related to under

Sena against separate
statehoold for Vidarbha
‘It is like mother-child separation’
Mumbai, Nov 5 (PTI):
Describing BJP’s stand on separate statehood for Vidarbha akin to ‘protectors becoming perpetrators’, the Shiv Sena today reminded its former ally of
the resounding mandate it got in Vidarbha and said the vote was in favour of
development and not for a separate statehood.
‘The BJP won handsomely in the Vidarbha region in the recently held Assembly
elections. But they should not think they have got this mandate to divide Maharashtra. Separating Vidarbha from Maharashtra is like separating a child from its
mother,’ the Sena said in an edit in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.
‘When a CM who hails from Vidarbha talks about its separation, it is just like
the protector of Maharashtra getting ready to become a perpetrator or wrongdoer,’ it added. The Sena said that instead of speaking about separation of
Vidarbha, the BJP should concentrate on developing the region.
‘While on his first visit to Nagpur after becoming the CM, (Devendra) Fadnavis
said that Vidarbha will be carved out at an appropriate time. Instead, he should
have spoken about the development of the region. He should have spoken
about empowering the security agencies in Naxal-hit areas like Gadchiroli and
Chandrapur,’ the Sena said.
Its hypocrisy on the part of BJP to now talk about carving out a separate
state, when the same party accused the Congress of making a mistake when
it created Telangana from Andhra Pradesh, it said.
was given to all political parties, the
petition contended.
Relying on various court orders, the
petition said ‘while police had power
to control and regulate processions,
they did not have power to forbid or
ban processions. The power to control
does not include the power to forbid.’
Justice V Ramasubramanian issued notice to the district authorities
concerned and police when the petitions by seven units of RSS came up
for hearing on Monday and directed
Additional Government Pleader P
Sanjay Gandhi to get instructions and
posted the matter for further hearing
on 6 November.

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 5 (PTI):
Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today rejected the

holding that an examination by

A vigilance probe into the allegation against Finance Minister

Court stays
release of
Rang Rasiya
Kochi, Nov 5 (PTI):
In a blow to makers of Bollywood
movie ‘Rang Rasiya’, claimed to be
based on the life of legendary 19th
century Indian painter Raja Ravi
Varma, a Kerala court has stayed
the release of the film which was
due to hit theatres on Friday.
The interim stay order was issued
by the Mavelikkara munsiff court
in Alapuzha district yesterday on a
complaint by Varma’s grand daughter Indiradevi Kunjama.
Judge Prasun Mohan made it
clear that the makers of the movie
should not exhibit it without adding
a disclaimer that the film has no
connection with the personal life
of Varma.
A munsiff court is the lowest court
handling civil matters. The Ketan
Mehta directed film is based on
Ranjit Desai’s novel titled ‘Raja
Ravi Varma’.
Meanwhile, a PIL seeking a ban
on the film has also been filed in
the Kerala High Court. According
to the petitioner, S Amrutha Kumar, the film portrays the artist as
a womaniser and claims that it was
a true story.
The petitioner pointed that a well
known artist had been depicted as
a playboy and the makers of the film
have not even given a disclaimer.
BJP gaining
ground in AP
Hyderabad, Nov 5 (PTI):
With Congress relegated to the
margins post bifurcation of Andhra
Pradesh, the BJP appears to be
gaining ground in the new State and
also emerging as an alternative for
senior leaders from Congress and
other parties.
Former Minister and senior Congress leader from Guntur district
Kanna Lakshminarayana has already
announced his plans to join BJP and
several other leaders in Congress
and YSR Congress, who feel insecure about their political future, are
reportedly contemplating joining the
saffron party. Prior to the elections,
senior Congress leaders like D
Purandeswari and K S Rao, who quit
as Union Ministers in protest against
the bifurcation of undivided AP, joined
the BJP. ‘We are open to those who
come voluntarily. We are not encouraging or luring anyone to join BJP,’
Andhra Pradesh BJP president and
Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha member
K Hari Babu told PTI.
Facing the wrath of electorate over
the division of Andhra Pradesh, Congress, which had been in power for
10 years, failed to win even a single
Assembly and Lok Sabha seat in the
elections earlier this year.
On the other hand, BJP, in alliance
with TDP, made impressive gains by
bagging two Lok Sabha seats and
four Assembly segments.
Haribabu said there is a political
vaccum with the decline of Congress
in the State. ‘There is a vacuum with
the decline of Congress. Definitely,
there is a momentum in favour of BJP.
Hearing in Salman
case adjourned
New Delhi, Nov 5:
The trial for Salman Khan’s hearing in the
infamous 2002 hit-and-run case has been
adjourned by the Court till 24 November. The
actor failed to appear for the trial.
In the hit-and run-case, one person was
killed and four others were injured when
Salman’s Land Cruiser, allegedly driven by
him, crushed a group of people sleeping on
the pavement outside a bakery in suburban
Bandra in the wee hours of 28 September,
2002.
Last month, the witness confirmed in his statement
to the court that Salman was on the driving seat, while
leaving the hotel premises on that ill-fated night.
On 23 June, 2014, during the retrial of the infamous
case, a manager of liquor bar in Juhu had identified Salman, saying the actor had come to the restaurant with
friends hours before his car was involved in an accident

If Salman is convicted then he may even
face a punishment of 10 years in prison.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court today
reserved order on the Salman Khan blackbuck poaching case. The court is yet to
decide Salman Khan’s fate in connection
with the black buck poaching case. Reportedly, today was supposed to be the final hearing

Salman was convicted and sentenced to one year and
five-year prison term in separate cases of poaching of
two Chinkaras at Bhawad and one black buck at Ghoda
