Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests upon the firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells not only with them, but in them. For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come to be identified with the presence of God and the only place where authentic worship of God took place. Jesus had a different perception. Jesus identified himself not with the temple, but as the temple. In so doing, Jesus indicated a dramatic shift in what it means to worship God, to be in God’s presence. No longer was a place to be the focus of prayer. Instead, a person, the person of Jesus Christ, becomes the center of our worship. Psalm — The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High (Psalm 46). Second Reading — Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17). Gospel — Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up (John 2:13-22). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For several weeks, we have considered penance as a sacrament of forgiveness, and yet there are two other sacraments in this category. The first, of course, is the Eucharist itself. The other is the sacrament of the sick, long associated with penance. The Letter of James sets out the deep tradition for caring for the sick: sending for the priests, who will pray and lay their hands on the sick ones, anointing them with oil, and giving them forgiveness. Long before other rites of penance developed, the sacrament of the sick was therefore a profound experience of forgiveness. Jesus often healed the sick, nearly always as a visible sign of forgiveness of sin. The tradition didn’t unfold smoothly, however, and within a few centuries the oil of the sick was taken home to be applied by caregivers as a salve, or even to be drunk as a medicine. As early as the second century, bishops were therefore urging that priests should be the ones to visit those separated by illness from the Sunday assembly. Thus the practice of consigning the Eucharist and the oil of the sick to the non-ordained faithful to bring home was relatively short -lived. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Page 5 November 9, 2014 In Loving Memory of a Long-Time Parishioner and Head Sacristan of Resurrection Parish It is with a heavy heart that we report the recent passing of Ken Gibson, a former long time parishioner and Head Sacristan at Resurrection parish. Ken was our Head Sacristan for nearly 20 years. He began his duties in May of 1993 and retired in September 2012. Ken had a quiet, dignified presence and took his duties seriously. He worked with respect and reverence for Our Lord. We will miss his wonderful smile and his many interesting stories about his past travels. May you rest in peace Ken, with our Heavenly Father, and may He comfort your family and those of us mourning the loss of our friend. Page 6 November 9, 2014 RESURRECTION MEN’S CLUB SEEKING NEW MEMBERS RMC for the last 20 years has been filling many of the needs of our parish. Formed in 1994 at the request of then Fr. McNamara. Over the years the RMC has provided man -hours and money to help those in need in our parish, our community and our Diocese. RMC was also set up as a social organization to allow us to get to know our fellow parishioners. RMC now needs your help. All men of the parish are asked to consider joining our organization to allow us to continue our service to this great parish. Time and the spinning off of 3 other parishes from ours has reduced the number of our members. We need to rejuvenate our membership. That means YOU!! We need you and your energy and commitment to serve your parish. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is preceded by the recitation of the Rosary at 7:15 p.m. Prayer and service is our guiding mission. Can it be yours? Call 437-6650 for more information. The unleavened wafers are baked from pure wheat flour and water, are usually rectangular in shape and very thin; they are identical in composition to a round wafer which become the Host after the Consecration during Mass in the Roman Catholic Church. Being only a reminder of the Body of Christ used in private homes, Opłatki lack sanctification by a priest or bishop. The Opłatki wafers are embossed with Christmas related religious images, varying from the nativity scene, especially Virgin Mary with baby Jesus, to the Star of Bethlehem. Polish tradition Family members and friends break off a small piece of the opłatek wafer and give it to one another along with a blessing. Breaking off and exchanging part of opłatek with someone is symbol of forgiveness between two people and is meant to remind participants of the importance of Christmas, God, and family. A sample blessing can take the form of "I wish you much health, happiness and the Lord's bountiful blessings as well as the fulfillment of all your plans and everything you wish for yourself." or just wishing good grades to a child and good health to your parents. It is also common to put a "shared part" into the envelope while you're sending a Christmas card to someone close to you so that during Christmas Eve supper someone could share it with you as well as those personally present. Another tradition, connected to the belief that during the Holy Night (the Night 24/25th Dec) animals could speak with a human voice, is to give the only colored wafer to the farm animals. This tradition is still continued mostly in villages and farms. The tradition of sharing the Opłatek wafer is one of the rich variety of traditions that Poles still celebrate during Christmas Eve Supper which is the most elegant and sumptuous evening in the whole year. Among others there are: ~ partial fasting and full abstinence from meat; during December 24th families skimp on the quality and quantity of food, eating only two small meals before the great Christmas feast at supper ~ eating dishes; there should be 12 of them (for the memory of 12 Apostles), no meat but there must be carp in various forms along with other kinds of fish ~ putting some pieces of hay under the white table cloth (for the memory of Jesus lying on the hay) ~ the meal is strictly closed to members of a family circle - however, one place at the table left for "the unexpected guest" ~ carol singing at home and in church while waiting for the joyful Solemn High Mass at midnight to begin Origins The tradition traces its origins to the times of early Christianity and is seen as a non-sacramental foreshadowing of the liturgical partaking of the Holy Eucharist (Host), unleavened bread consecrated into the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. As a Christmas custom the “opłatek” originated in Poland and was spread widely as far back as the 17th century. It was the part of the szlachta's (Polish nobility) culture and the custom had spread throughout the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and neighboring countries. In the 19th century in the aftermath of the partitions of Poland it gained patriotic subtexts as the common wish during sharing of “opłatek” became the wish for Poland's regaining its independence. Since that time “opłatki” are often embossed with religious images. ~From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Page 13 November 9, 2014 PHIL KISER FUNERAL HOME, INC. 9231 Cypress Lake Dr., Fort Myers 481-4341 Breakfast Lunch Dinner 7 Days 6 AM - 9 PM CUSTOM CATERING 239-437-5504 18011 S.
