25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Wall
9 November 1989 is a historic date – and not just for Germany. Peaceful pressure applied
by courageous people caused the Berlin Wall to topple and fall, taking everyone by surprise. A grassroots revolution that almost casually breached one of the world’s most impenetrable borders. Germany is now no longer divided and the defeat of Eastern European dictatorships has been sealed. 25 years of freedom – to mark this anniversary Deutsche
Welle is showing a series of documentary films that tell of the history of the division of
Germany and the Iron Curtain, but also of the fall and the legacy of the dictatorships:
The two-part documentary The Night the Wall Came Down (2 and 9 November) transports the viewer back to the most memorable press conference of the last century: Politburo member Günter Schabowski announces new travel regulations for East Germans on
live television. He mistakenly says they will take immediate effect, ushering in 24 breathtaking hours that change the world.
A team of reporters endeavors to piece together some of the refugee stories that have
rarely been told. Fatal Flight (4 November) – a co-production by Deutsche Welle and Westdeutscher Rundfunk – examines the fate of many East German citizens who tried to escape to the West over the Greek-Bulgarian border. They believed security was not so tight
there, but this turned out to be a fatal error of judgment.
The two-part documentary The Guilt of Others (1 and 8 November) – a co-production
by ARTE and Deutsche Welle – examines whether opening up East German state security
documents, the so-called “Stasi” files, contributed to the reconciliation process. In doing
this, the film also poses a key question with global relevance: What should societies do
with the documented legacy of a dictatorship? Should they delve into the material and
process it, or draw a line and move on?
Deutsche Welle has joined forces with Telewizja Polska to produce the documentary
Learn Polish (5 November). “Learn Polish” was one of many appeals that appeared as graffiti in East Germany in the early 1980s. The courage and strength of the Solidarność trade
unionist movement in Poland gave many East German opposition activists hope that
reforms could also be introduced at home. Up to now, little was known about such acts of
solidarity and their impact, which was sometimes dramatic.

Catrin Ulbricht, Katrin Hattenhauer and
Jochen Läßig are The Rebels (6 November). Refusing to conform and stay silent,
these young adults joined illegal peace
and civil rights groups in East Germany in
1989. Like many other people, they wanted
to instigate change in their country. The
protagonists look back from today’s perspective on the rebellion and upheaval in
the GDR.
The fall of the Wall – a ray of hope in an
era of violent wars and growing conflicts
the world over. Watch these and other documentaries on the battle for freedom and
democracy in November on DW.
ARTS.21
Borderline Art
North and South Korea have been locked
in a military standoff for more than 60
years. They are separated by a demilitarized zone controlled by UN troops. Now,
art is taking over a bit of this border strip.
25 years after the fall of the Wall, artists
from Germany have been grappling with
everyday life in both parts of Korea. The
project is opening up new spaces for art:
deserted military buildings, ruins and
tunnel networks. Arts.21 followed those involved to no man’s land – to a place where
few people have access.

A Costly Success Story
Economists say German reunification has cost some two trillion Euros to date. But who is
bothered about that on 9 November 2014? 25 years on, the fall of the Wall is still seen as a
hugely positive development for the majority of Germans, something they did not dare to
seriously hope for right to the last. But it is also true to say that the transition from a planned
to a market economy was much more painful than expected at the time.
Economic experts seriously underestimated the levels of damage inflicted on the eastern German economy by more than 40 years of socialism. Most people in East Germany
worked in large concerns which, when they were privatized, did not start making a profit,
but were plunged into 125 billion Euros of debt. The second German economic miracle that
many hoped for did not materialize. To this day, the jobless rate in eastern Germany is twice,
even three times as high as in the West. Made In Germany reports on the titanic economic
effort that accompanied German reunification.

EUROMAXX
The fall of the Wall heralded the start of a new chapter of Berlin’s varied history. A city also
shaped by the many millions of people who visit, tourists drawn by the fascination of a city
fusing itself back together after decades of division.
Discover Germany explores the key sites of the capital’s most recent history – from the
East Side Gallery via the Wall memorial through to the Karl-Marx-Allee boulevard. The travel magazine also accompanies a Berlin visitor from Argentina. The tourist describes his own
personal view of the metropolis that was only able to spread its wings properly again after
the Wall fell.

Post-Wall Paths
Writer Eugen Ruge, gallery owner Gerd
Harry Lybke and musician Klaus Meine –
all artists whose careers experienced crucial
impetus after the fall of the Wall and the ensuing process of reunification. This process
of political upheaval released great creative
potential among artists in particular, and
many are still feeding off the momentum to
this day.
In the five-part series “Post-Wall Paths”
Euromaxx meets German artists from both
East and West. What are their memories of
9 November 1989? And 25 years after the
Fall of the Wall, what are their conclusions?
