5238 Coiled Tubing Reel (Hydra Rig)
The 5238 Hydra Rig coiled tubing reel is a DNV certified reel
designed to store coiled tubing. The reel drum is supported on an
axle and is rotated by a hydraulic motor.
Levelwind
To control the coiling process, a winding mechanism (levelwind)
is synchronized with the rotation of the reel by a chain drive
taken from the driveshaft. Should the spooling of the tubing not
correspond to the drum rotation, an override operator control is
provided in the control cabin. The levelwind arm can be lowered
or raised from the cabin to help ensure that the tubing is kept at a
proper angle to the injector head.
Reel Swivel
The inner end of the coiled tubing string is welded to a 3-in.
hammer union. This union is attached to a plumbing arrangement
inside the drum of the reel, with the last piece connected to the
hub of the reel. To allow the circulation of fluids and gases into the
tubing while running in or out of the hole, a high-pressure swivel
joint is located at the end of the reel shaft. Any oilfield fluid or gas,
such as acid or nitrogen, can be pumped through the connecting
pipework, the swivel joint, and down the coiled tubing while the
reel is in motion, and to any pressure up to 15,000 psi or coiled
tubing operational limit.
Depth Counters and Oiler system
Electrical and mechanical depth odometers, mounted on the
spooling arm, can be used. Their measuring wheels are rotated by
frictional contact with the tubing as it passes by. Finally, an oiler
system operated from the control cabin coats the coiled tubing with
an oil-based corrosion inhibitor to help ensure long life.

Hydraulic Drive
The hydraulic drive system has a dual function. When uncoiling
of the tubing (i.e. injecting into the well), the motor acts as a
constant-torque brake keeping the tubing tight on the reel and
tension between the reel assembly and injector head. When coiling
the tubing (i.e. pulling out of the well), the motor is attempting to
revolve the reel at a faster rate than the injector, thus increasing
coiled tubing tension as it is spooled onto the drum.
