Creating Opportunities for
Commerce & Community
November/December 2014
From the Executive Director
Dear Members,
October is manufacturing month and we are pleased to honor all of our members that are in manufacturing or
support the industry. West Bend has its roots in manufacturing and we owe a great deal to those that had the
vision to start their companies here in our community.
Our Chamber is always in motion and with the month of November fast approaching we are putting the finishing
touches on our annual dinner and business of the year awards. This year’s dinner is very special because we will
be honoring Pat Strachota for her many years of serving our community in the State Assembly. The dinner will
give our members the opportunity to thank her for her unwavering support of our business community. Please
be sure to mark your calendar for November 12th and join us in celebrating her ten years in State Government.
With Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner we are preparing for the huge rush for Chamber Gift
Checks. From late November through December we sell over $100,000 in checks to local businesses that give
them out as Christmas bonuses. Residents use them as gifts for teachers, coaches, delivery folks and family members. Unlike generic gift cards, our Gift Checks keep the money here in our community. Our checks are usually
just a small portion of a purchase payment with the remainder paid with cash or a credit card.
On the tourism front, I’m happy to report that our new Four Seasons Geotour has been a huge success. In the
last three months it has brought over 600 people to the West Bend area. Folks have travelled an average of 162
miles, stayed over 550 nights in our hotels and purchased over 1,100 meals at participating restaurants. Please
keep in mind that this is just the start of the program that will continue through 2016.
Registration information was recently mailed out to previous exhibitors for the 41st annual US Bank/West Bend
Chamber Home, Garden & Leisure Show, March 13th through 15th at Fair Park. Booths are going fast, so if the
information is sitting on your desk, act quickly to select your booth location and get the early bird discount. If
you are considering exhibiting at our show, an application is enclosed…..see page 5 for more information.
In closing, I would like to have you circle your calendar for our annual
Christmas Open House on December 10th between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm.
It is an opportunity for you to see the Frisby House decorated for the
holidays and visit with fellow members and our Chamber staff.
We send you our warmest holiday wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2015!

Leadership Greater West Bend
Leadership Greater West Bend is off to a GREAT start…
In September, this year’s class of 14 area leaders began the Leadership
Greater West Bend program with a 2 – day “retreat”. The first day
began with the class getting to know each other followed by a session
on name one thing true about you and one thing not true about you
and have your classmates guess which is true. The candidates were
assigned to project teams based on a leadership styles assessment they took prior to
the retreat. The afternoon was launched with a team “ice breaker” followed by several
team building activities at the YMCA.
The second day began with a continental breakfast with the Chamber Board of
Directors and members of the Chamber Government Relations Committee.
Following an assessment on leadership styles and developing yourself as a community
leader, five non-profit agencies presented community service projects to the candidates. Each team was paired with a mentor and project that will be worked on
throughout the upcoming year. The day concluded with a city-wide bus tour conducted by Gary Britton, with a special stop to present awards and socialize.
On October 16th, the group met for Environment Day. The purpose of this day is
to acquaint the candidates with the agencies in our community that focus on different
elements of our environment. The day’s activities included a tour of the Wastewater
Treatment plant in West Bend, a visit to the Fellenz Woods, a property of the
Ozaukee-Washington Land Trust, as well as experiencing the “SCOPE” of
Lac Lawrann Conservancy in West Bend.
The candidates will meet again on November 20th for Heritage, History and Culture
Day. They will enjoy a brief look at a wide variety of cultural/arts organizations in
Washington County as well as learn about the history of the area.
The curriculum for each of the “days” is coordinated by the Leadership Great West
Bend Alumni Board. With assistance from the Leadership Greater West Bend
Alumni, they continue to develop the curriculum to keep the Leadership program
fresh and new.
The current members of the Alumni Board are Tim Dehring (WB Police Dept.),
Craig Hoeppner (WB Parks, Rec and Forestry), Andrea Kaehny (Horicon Bank),
Mary Kurer (UW-WC), Bonnie Nissly (Lighthouse of WB), Candy Sarauer (Regal
Ware), Amy Schmoldt (Commerce State Bank), John Spartz (WB Fire Dept.), Jenny
Zaskowski (KM YMCA), Cory Neuy (Regal Ware), Jason Loomans (MPTC) and
Holly Schneider as the 2013-2014 class representative.
If you are interested in more information on the Leadership Greater West Bend
program please contact Mary Driscoll at The Chamber (262) 338-2666.
