Presidents Message - Al Trepiccione
Great show in October. We had 118 pieces put in and Tony Quattrone
walked away a big winner! Congratulations to Tony.
Many thanks to our members who have generously donated their time and
crosses to our campaign, especially George Laue, who donated over 90
crosses. Also Ken Miller, whose Leisure Glen living companions have
banded together and submitted over 70 crosses. Here is something to think
about.....do these crosses benefit only those in need of them or is the desire to
help those who need it coming back to reward those who are making the
crosses? I think the latter!
A special thanks to Cheryl Lynch, Mike Reische's daughter, who donated
$25.00 in cash and tools which were raffled off. The total was $74.00, which
is going directly into a fund for boxes for the crosses. This will NOT be
counted in our account, but he held separate, as discussed at the last business
meeting. A thank you letter has been sent to Cheryl.
During the business meeting I asked if there was any old business or new
business. There wasn't.

A budget report and projection was given by Mark Vosburgh. I mentioned
that because of a projected increase in the budget, the membership needs to
decide how they want to spend excess monies. All were asked to think about
this and we would discuss it in January or February.
The Christmas Party will be held. Tickets are still available so if you have
not already signed up with Mark, now is the time to do it.
We also discussed the "Honorary List", that is members who are no longer an
active part of the organization that will be kept abreast via email and
mailings of the Whittler. After some discussion it was stated that the persons
on the "Honorary List" should be decided by the President. Nobody
disagreed with this.
It was mentioned that because of the latest vote to not offer half priced
membership to out of state members, we have lost some members.
Secretaries Message - Steve Blakley
OK, so what is this "SECOND ISSUE" of the November Whittler? Well, it
all stems from when we used to have the business meetings toward the end of
the month. By the time the newsletter got out, it was actually the following
month and the newsletter reflected that month. Since we moved the business
meeting to the beginning of the month, when the Whittler comes out it is "out
of sync" for the calendar month. This caused some mild confusion, so this
issue is the second issue of November. All further issues will be sent out the
month the business meeting occurs. Unless of course things change again in
the future, which will necessitate me telling you something else that you
really don't care about. Oh, and you will see some duplications in this
Whittler from the first one. You figure out which ones they are.
We had a great competition this year. Two new things were added. Bob
Urso set up his table for those who wanted to purchase new tools (at a club
discount I might add) and there were four tables set up with "show pieces"
that were not judged. A lot of them were scrolling with some turnings and
carvings. Judge Ken Wang also had a table to show his carved pieces.
These tables seemed to generate a lot of interest, especially while the judging
3
was going on. The three judges for the competition were Ken Wang, (who
was also a judge for us in 2011); Cathy Laudonio (who also judged for us in
2012) and Don Dailey. Ken by the way, donated his $75.00 judging fee back
to the SCWG. Thanks so much Ken! A special letter was sent via USPS to
Ken.

Everyone say "Hello" to Sam Bellavia.
Letters to the Editor:
"There was a time when the Guild attended various events and had a few members that
demonstrated woodcarving to the public and encouraged them to come and join "us" and learn
the craft and find out how enjoyable it can be.
Regretfully these "teachers" have aged and have encountered health problems that prevent them
from meeting and educating the public on a regular basis. What a shame and loss this is.
We have other members currently who have won many blue ribbons and Best in Show Awards
who show no interest in "picking up the ball and running with it" to pass on their knowledge.
The Guild apparently has no interest in attending events to meet and educate the public as it
used to. That is unless there were personal monetary gain involved. What a shame and
disgrace. All those years and effort expended to encourage and educate the Public are about to
disappear because those that can won't and the Guild can but won't. Kind of makes you proud
to belong, doesn't it?"

Meet George Laue
(By Howard Kleiner)
Fellow carvers, meet George Laue. George is a new fairly member but has quickly become
active in the affairs of our guild.
George was born in Ithica, NY and spent his youth in Enfield, NY, graduating from high school
in 1967. He was active playing the drum in the marching band. George attended and graduated
from Courtland State NY, obtaining a degree in math and education.
He met his wife Maria at the school and they were engaged in his senior year. George and
Maria were married on July 8, 1972, has been happily married for 42 years. The couple rented
for awhile in Lake Ronkonkoma and then bought their own place in Port Jefferson Station.
They have two happily married daughters, Michelle and Kristen and are the proud grandparents
of five.
George was a claims analyst with Allstate Insurance for 38 years and has since retired. His
hobbies include gardening, woodworking and he and Maria go to the Mets Spring Training
Camp every year. George started carving 2 years ago and attended the LI Woodworkers Club,
where he met Steve Blakley who introduced him to our Guild. He is interested in relief carving
and general carving.
Until he was 18 George was raised and worked on his parent's dairy farm, attending a one room
schoolhouse - a genuine country boy!
George is a real asset to our organization and a really good guy.

Fill in Page: For printing purposes, the Whittler has to be an even number of pages. For postal regulations, it
should be 8 pages long, which is the cost of a first class stamp. Sometimes, like this issue, I push the envelope
and make it 10 pages and hope to slip them past the USPS. So when I get to an odd number of pages of
information we need to let you know about, I insert light hearted submissions from the membership such as are
on this page. We all enjoy these......
