Whinlatter Duathlon Sunday 16th November, 2014 Welcome to the Whinlatter Duathlon. Please read the following instructions to help ensure you have a safe and enjoyable event. Event Venue: Whinlatter Visitor Centre, Whinlatter Forest Park, CA12 5TW (Grid ref: NY209245) Directions: Follow the A66 for 2 miles west of Keswick, turn left onto B5292 sign posted 'Whinlatter Pass/Lorton/Braithwaite'. Drive carefully through the village and up Whinlatter Pass for approx. 2.5 miles. Parking: Event parking is free for participants. We'll be using both the new overflow car park at the visitor centre and Revelin Moss car park (Area marked as Comb Bridge on map). For overflow car park: Turn right into visitor centre then bear immediate right and follow the coned section to the overflow, park as directed by the marshal. This has space for approx. 100 cars, once this is full then you'll be directed to Revelin Moss car park. For Revelin Moss car park: Turn left into Revelin Moss car park approx. 200m BEFORE the Visitor Centre. Take the first right before the parking area and park as directed by marshals. Allow 5 mins. walk to registration. Please do not use the main visitor centre car park unless indicated to do so. If you park here without a ticket you will most likely receive a parking fine. The event will start across the road at Revelin Moss car park. Registration will be situated in the exhibition area in the visitor centre, adjacent to Siskins café. This year the transition area will be located on the forest track just above the MTB trailhead. The finish is located adjacent to Cyclewise same as previously. There is now a diagram on the event website illustrating this layout. Please take time to make yourself familiar with the transition and finish procedure. The timing and transition procedure will also be explained at the race briefing. Schedule on the Day: 08:00 – 09:30 Registration open 09:40 Race briefing at transition area 10:00 Mass Start at Revelin Moss car park 14:00 Presentation at Cyclewise (approx.) Registration: You will need to register when you arrive and collect your SPORTIdent electronic timing card and one event number which is to be attached to the front of your race top. Please add your ICE (In Case of Emergency) details & any medical conditions in the space provided on your event number. Do not fold your race number otherwise you will receive a 30min time penalty. The SI card will be attached to your wrist. British Triathlon license holders must produce race licence otherwise be charged an extra £3 on day. SPORTident Electronic Timing: This will be used to record your overall time & split times for each discipline. The ‘dipper’ is a small electronic SI-card that is dipped into electronic stations. The timing stations will be mounted on stakes at the side of the track. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT YOU DIP YOUR CARD IN THE TIMING STATION. Ensure that the control box 'beeps' and the LED flashes when you 'dip'. Procedure: -You don’t dip at the start of the race as it is a Mass Start. -You must ‘dip’ each time you enter and exit transition and at the finish. This enables split times to be recorded for each discipline. These points will be clearly marked and explained fully at the race briefing. -As you arrive and leave transition you must look out for and identify the “TIMING STATION, DIB HERE” sign. -Immediately after you finish you must download & hand in your SI-card where you signed in for registration. Here you will receive a printout of your times and can check the results. -If you fail to dip at any of these locations you will not be given a time for the event. This means that you will therefore be disqualified and not be eligible for a prize. Don’t worry if you have never used SI-cards before, it is a straightforward procedure! It’s just a case of remembering to do so during the event. Remember: You dip at the END of the RUN, as you exit transition to START the BIKE, at the END of the BIKE, as you exit transition to START the final RUN section and then at the FINISH. Please ensure that you return your SPORTIdent Timing card immediately after you finish whether you complete the course or not. This is an essential safety requirement of the event. SI-cards that are lost or not returned at the finish are charged at £28 each. If you are unfamiliar with the use of SI timing a control box will be on display at registration, so that you can familiarise yourself with the system. Visit www.sportident.co.uk for further information. Relay teams: will carry one SI-card between them attached by a lanyard, this will be passed over where your bike is racked. Bike Racking: After registering, rack your bike in the transition area. Any run/bike kit that you will use during the event can be left here. Toilets: These are located at the rear of the Visitor Centre. There will also be two portaloos adjacent to the main toilets. There are no changing or shower facilities at the venue. Briefing: There will be a compulsory event safety briefing at the transition area at 0940. Following this it’s a 5min.walk to the start at Revelin Moss car park. Rules: The event will be run under current British Triathlon rules, familiarise yourself if you are new to Duathlon. Visit www.britishtriathlon.org/events/rules Helmets must be worn and securely fastened before unracking your bike. No cycling is allowed in the transition area and there will be a mount/dismount line located approx. 10m from transition. Clothing & Equipment: Dress appropriately and be prepared for the conditions, the route climbs to over 500m! The Lake District is a mountainous region and the weather can deteriorate at any time of the year. It is strongly recommended that you carry the minimum basic equipment: Waterproof/windproof cover, thermal clothing, hat & gloves, bike pump, spare inner tubes, multi tool, food & drink. The Cyclewise shop will be open for any last minute essentials. Trail running shoes are recommended for the run. UK mountain weather forecast www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/mountain-forecasts/lake-district Signage: The course will be signposted and marked with tape. Run route: Run courses will be marked with ‘Blue’ directional signs & yellow ‘Salomon’ tape. Due to some fallen trees on Run 1 we are not able to use the section of trail at the Masmil boundary. This is the section just after ‘Heavy Sides’. Instead, the route will follow the forest road. Bike route: This will be marked with yellow/black fluorescent signs and red & white tape. Please familiarise yourself with the course maps & route, the responsibility is on the competitor to follow the correct route. There are various points on the course where the bike and run routes cross, please be observant as to which route to follow. If you come to a junction with no signage, double back to the last marked one. Maps will be displayed at registration. NOTE: The section that descends past Comb Beck is footpath only, followed by riding the Red cycle route in reverse. These two sections MUST NOT be rode prior to the event. The mtb route will turn right at Black Gill forest junction and follow the same section (and direction) as the run route for approx. 300m. This is narrow singletrack, please be aware of runners and any members of public on this section. We’ll also be incorporating the new section of mtb trail leading to the start of the south red loop. Take care on the descent of Sanderson Gill as it is a sharp right turn onto the mtb trail. After completing the red south loop you reach the road. Turn left here and follow the road for approx. 200m. (You do not turn into the main visitor centre car park) then cross the road turning right onto the forest track. The top section of this climb will be marked with cones from here to Black Gill. Please ride with care and stay to the left of the cones as this section is now part of the Gruffalo trail and families may be walking this section. Road Safety: There is one public road crossing towards the end of the first run between Revelin Moss car park and transition. There are two public road crossings & one short 100m section of road on the mtb course. Great care must be taken, be prepared to stop if necessary. Obey the Highway Code at all times and instructions from any marshals. Please Note: The event is held on Forestry Commission land who have very kindly given their permission to use it. It is important that you follow the marked routes & do not cut any corners. Taking short cuts will result in disqualification. Please ensure that you don’t drop any litter on the course and be courteous to members of the public. Hydration Stations: Water & squash will be available during & after the event located at the transition area. There will also be hot drinks and tray bakes (caramel shortbread!) available at the finish. Retirements: If you retire early for whatever reason you must inform event HQ or a marshal. This is an essential safety requirement of the event. If you register on the day & decide not to compete you MUST inform event HQ. Prizes: The presentation will take place outside Cyclewise at 1400 (approx). You must attend the presentation to receive any prize you have won. No prizes will be posted out. Results & Timing: Overall results will be displayed at the finish area and results/split times posted on the event website www.highterrainevents.co.uk on Monday 11th. Event Photography: Granddayoutphotography.co.uk will be out on the course, pictures will be available online after the event. Please check the event website for any updates and also the information at registration. Let me know if you have any further questions. Enjoy this beautiful area & have a great event.
