Ebola And Pets

As officials in Spain recently euthanized a dog for being
exposed to Ebola, and the dog of a Texas nurse who became
infected with Ebola is currently in quarantine, doctors from
ACCES (A BluePearl Veterinary Partners Hospital) want to
share the information that is known about pets and Ebola.
“There is currently limited information available when
it comes to Ebola and how this infectious disease interacts
with our pets,” said Beth Davidow, Medical Director of
ACCES. “However, ACCES and the BluePearl Veterinary
Partners team have done our best to put together a list of the
important things we do currently know.”
• Diseases that can pass between humans and animals are
referred to as zoonotic diseases. This is important because
62 percent of American households have at least one pet according to a 2012 Humane Society survey. Because of this,
veterinarians play a vital role in recognizing and preventing
the spread of disease.
• Ebola is zoonotic, but the extent to which it actually affects animals is not well known. According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, scientists believe that the
first patient became infected through contact with an infected
animal, such as a fruit bat or primate (apes and monkeys),
which is called a spillover event. Person-to-person transmission follows and can lead to large numbers of affected
persons. In the current West African epidemic, animals have
not been found to be a factor in ongoing Ebola transmission.
• As for dogs and cats becoming infected with Ebola,
there have been no reports of dogs or cats becoming sick
with Ebola, even though they may develop antibodies from
exposure to the disease. Certainly a greater understanding
of the effects of Ebola on dogs and cats is needed.
• According to the CDC, the risk of an Ebola outbreak
affecting multiple people in the United States is very low.
Therefore, the risk to pets is also very low. Even in areas in
Africa where Ebola is present, there have been no reports
of dogs and cats becoming sick with Ebola.
• Beyond the more common household pets, some people
do keep monkeys as pets. According to the CDC, monkeys
are at risk for Ebola. Symptoms of Ebola infection in monkeys include fever, decreased appetite and sudden death.
Monkeys should not be allowed to have contact with anyone
who may have Ebola. Healthy monkeys already living in
the United States and without exposure to a person infected
with Ebola are not at risk for spreading Ebola.
• If there is a pet in the home of an Ebola patient, the CDC
recommends that veterinarians, in collaboration with public
health officials, evaluate the pet’s risk of exposure. Appropriate measures, such as closely monitoring the exposed pet
while taking necessary precautions, should be put in place.
Scientists and veterinarians with the American Veterinary
Medical Association, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the
CDC and many other partners are continuing to work together
to develop additional guidance for the U.S. pet population.

Thailand’s Quest For World
Domination... In Rice And Sugar
From Farm Policy Facts
Thailand is a behemoth in the world rice market by anyone’s definition.
Using an assortment of subsidies and government programs, Thailand had grown to become the world’s biggest
rice exporter by 2011. That year, it shipped 10.6 million tons
of rice—or nearly one-third of global exports.
Apparently, that wasn’t good enough. In October of that
same year, the Thai government hatched a plan to exert
OPEC-like control over the world rice market in 2012 while
simultaneously buying some goodwill among the politically
powerful domestic rice industry.
The scheme went something like this: The Thai government would buy rice from producers at up to 50% above the
going market rate. Then, the government would store the
rice in vast state-owned warehouses, depriving the world
market of supply before it would finally dump the rice for a
profit after world prices surged due to the artificial shortage.
There was one big problem with the plan, which cost
Thailand taxpayers an estimated $4.4 billion in 2012 alone.
Thailand’s biggest competitors, India and Vietnam, simply
increased their exports to fill the void left by Thailand and
prices didn’t spike as expected.
Now, Thailand has a big rice problem on its hands. Its
new military-run government is still sitting on 18 million
tons of stored rice, a big harvest is just around the corner,
and prices are in the tank.
So far, the government has avoided selling off the storage in fear of further depressing prices, and according to a
recent Wall Street Journal article, it is embracing new subsidy
measures to keep the industry afloat.
Those government handouts include preferential loans to
producers in exchange for keeping their harvests in storage
and a one-time payment of $1.2 billion in cash to rice farmers.
In other words, Thailand is using subsidies and government market intervention to fix the problems created by
subsidies and government market intervention.
But rice is just part of the story. Thai sugar is also big
business, and the military government hopes it becomes a
lot bigger very soon.
Thailand is the world’s second largest sugar exporter behind only Brazil. But unlike Brazil, the Thai sugar industry
is rapidly expanding, growing from about 6 million tons of
sugar production in 2006 to more than 10 million tons in 2013.
Phillip Hayes, a spokesman for the American Sugar Alliance, says subsidization is the only way to explain Thailand’s
rapid growth.
“Thai sugar production is woefully inefficient and unmechanized, with the average sugar farm being less than 10
acres,” he said. “That’s like a garden in the United States or
Brazil, yet government intervention is fueling expansion in
Thailand.” The Thai government sets domestic sugar prices,
mandates production quotas, imposes tariffs, and offers up
preferential loans.
“In developing countries, preferential loans is a code
word for subsidy,” according to Hayes. “Growers get low or
no-interest loans then a few years later debts are magically
forgiven or restructured. It’s a cash handout in disguise and
it’s the preferred subsidy model in places like Brazil, India,
and Thailand.”
In addition to the loans, press reports from Thailand note
that the country is also considering strategies to encourage
rice producers to switch to sugar and is making state-owned
land available for cultivation in hopes of adding another 1
million tons of sugar production.
Rapid government-fueled expansion in hopes of becoming the world’s dominant player in a commodity market?
Sounds familiar, and Thailand doesn’t appear to have learned
much from its past mistakes. Of course, Thailand isn’t alone
in its march for domination. China has manipulated global
markets for years with its stockpiling programs and is now
eyeing direct subsidies. Brazil continues to bail out its struggling ethanol industry, which was built through government
investment and usage mandates. And India is facing WTO
scrutiny for its recent run-up in export subsidization.
“This is the intricate web of subsidies that efficient U.S.
farmers have to compete with,” Hayes explained. “It’s why
we must always strive to improve our efficiency, and it’s
why a strong U.S. Farm Bill is so important.”

Dairy Focus: Holstein Bull
Calves Have Value

Proper care of newborn calves is always the best choice.
If recent phone calls are any indication, the high price
of beef apparently has producers re-thinking the value of
Holstein bull calves. The notion is certainly understandable,
given the decline in feed costs and the record high prices of
beef at the retail counter.
One producer mused with me recently, remembering the
day when he left a stock trailer unattended at a sales ring. Back
then, it was not a good time for selling, especially calves that
were only a couple of days old. He said you couldn’t give
them away. Upon returning to his truck, he was surprised to
find his empty trailer full of Holstein bull calves!
Knowing the humorous nature of this visitor, I am confident that he stretched the truth, but his point was clear. Not
so long ago, sending bull calves to auctions that brought a
price so low it barely covered the commission to sell them
was common. Not so today. Bull calves often are bringing
nearly $300 at auction, so why not feed them yourself?
Some dairy farmers do, but many are not in a position to
add a feeding enterprise to their operation. And if you talk
to some traditional feedlot managers, they will tell you dairy
steers “feed different” than other breeds of beef cattle. And
that they do. Nonetheless, feed yards no doubt are pushing
a pencil on this one.
But before you even get to developing and growing calves,
some producers may be overlooking an opportunity. Given
the limited supply of market beef, dairy producers are in
a position to establish an income stream from the sale of
market calves. The opportunity for reward starts with the
health of the calf.
Admittedly, heifers often receive the best care because they
are the future of the herd. All the lessons we have learned
on how to grow a healthy newborn heifer calf applies to her
male cohorts as well.
The process begins at birth with proper care and nutrition,
whether you have a newborn heifer or bull calf. Here are
some ways to help ensure calves stay healthy:
• Dip navels within one hour of birth with a 7 percent
iodine solution.
• Provide colostrum from a cow milked within one hour
of giving birth.
• Use only high-quality colostrum, as measured with a
colostrometer.
• Feed 4 quarts of colostrum to the calf within one hour
of birth.
• Provide a second feeding of 2 quarts of colostrum 10
to 12 hours after birth.
Be mindful that with shortcuts on these practices, calves
may appear healthy on the day they are sold. However, with
time and added stress in the days or weeks after they leave
the farm, calves from inadequate health programs will exhibit more health-related problems and increase the buyer’s
animal health-care costs. Your reputation as a seller of dairy
bull calves will be made or lost and quickly recognized by
other buyers.
So now is a good time to review your calf health program
with your veterinarian, your family members and your employees. The health and welfare of your livestock at birth is
the foundation for rewards that are to come in the milking
parlor or in the feedlot.

A team of researchers including Montana State University
professor Selena Ahmed has found that shifting patterns of
precipitation affect key chemicals responsible for the flavor
and health properties of tea.
Ahmed, assistant professor of sustainable food systems in
the MSU College of Education, Health and Human Developoment, said the team’s research shows that major antioxidant
compounds that determine tea health properties and flavor,
including epigallocatechin, epigallocatechin gallate, epicatechin gallate, gallocatechin gallate, catechin and gallic acid,
fell up to 50 percent in an area of southwest China during an
extreme monsoon, while other compounds increased. Household income from the sales of tea grown during the extreme
monsoon also dropped by up to 50 percent, Ahmed said.
The findings are based on field samples taken from tea
gardens in southwest China. The researchers collected samples
from two extreme weather events, an extreme drought and an
extreme monsoon, and performed a chemical analysis of the
samples. The researchers also interviewed tea farmers, who
perceived the tea grown during the monsoon to be of lower
quality and preferred tea grown outside of the monsoon season.
The findings were published Oct. 6 in PLOS ONE a peerreviewed journal of the Public Library of Science (http://
www.plos.org/). Ahmed was the paper’s lead author.
The results of the research, which attracted attention
in a recent New York Times story on various animal and
plant species around the world that may be threatened by
warmer global temperatures, could have significant impacts
on farmers’ livelihoods, both in China and around the globe,
Ahmed said.
“Extrapolating findings from this study with climate
scenarios suggests that tea farmers will face increased variability in their livelihoods with the increased prevalence and
intensity of extreme droughts and heavy rains associated with
climate change,” Ahmed said. “The study has compelling
implications not only for tea, but also for all other food and
medicinal plants for which changes in weather patterns can
alter flavor and nutritional and medicinal properties.”
The study’s co-author, Rick Stepp, an associate professor
of cultural anthropology at the University of Florida, added
that the team’s research goes beyond the chemical analysis
of the tea.
“We are very interested in understanding not only how
climate impacts tea quality and farmer livelihoods, but also
the factors that enable farmers to adapt to climate risk,”
Stepp said.
Tea is a multibillion dollar industry, with many consumers choosing to drink it in order to receive health benefits.
In the United States, tea purchases have increased for 20
consecutive years and annual sales have surpassed $2.2 billion, with 160 million Americans drinking tea on any given
day, according to the Tea Association of the USA, a New
York-based industry group.
In fact, today tea is the most widely consumed beverage in
the world, second only to water, according to the University
of Maryland Medical Center. Hundreds of millions of people
around the world drink tea, which has been cultivated for
centuries, beginning in China and India.
Green tea is recognized for its many health benefits that
are attributed to powerful antioxidants called polyphenols,
including the catechin compounds Ahmed studies. Antioxidants fight free radicals, or damaging compounds in the body
that change cells, damage DNA, and even cause cell death.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center,
many scientists believe that free radicals contribute to the
aging process and the development of many health problems,
including cancer and heart disease. Research suggests that
antioxidants such as polyphenols in green tea can help prevent
cardiovascular disease, burn calories and even ward off some
types of cancer. In addition, green tea has been used to help
improve heart health, regulate body temperature and blood
sugar, and promote digestion, among other uses.

Do you have a kitchen fire extinguisher? An extinguisher
labeled “ABC” works on a variety of fires (paper, grease,
etc.). Be sure to review the directions that accompanied the
extinguisher.
If a fire should occur, experts suggest using the “PASS”
technique. PASS is an acronym that means you should
“pull” the pin and then “aim” at the base of the fire. Next
“squeeze” the lever that releases the extinguishing agent.
Finally, “sweep” from side to side until the fire goes out.
Before leaving your home or going to bed, check that
the stove is off.
Don’t be afraid to cook and bake, though. Keep an eye on
the crust if you try this fruit pizza, which is modified to have
less fat and calories. The recipe is courtesy of the Iowa State

1 large egg white
¼ c. cooking oil (canola, sunflower, etc.)
¼ c. brown sugar, firmly packed
1/3 c. all-purpose flour
¼ tsp. ground cinnamon
¼ tsp. baking soda
1 c. uncooked quick-cooking oatmeal
Cooking spray
Topping:
3 ounces of fat-free cream cheese, softened
3 ounces of (half of a 6-ounce carton) nonfat vanilla yogurt
Sliced fruit to top the pizza (your choice: kiwi, strawberries, mango or grapes)
Preheat the oven to 375 F. Beat the egg white until foamy.
Add oil and sugar and beat until smooth. In a small bowl,
stir together the flour, cinnamon and baking soda. Add to
the sugar mixture. Stir in oatmeal. Line a baking sheet with
aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray. Spread the
dough in a 9-inch circle. Bake for 12 minutes. Crust will
begin to puff but does not look “done.” Remove from oven
and let cool about 20 minutes. The crust continues to cook
while cooling.
In a small bowl, stir together the cream cheese and yogurt until smooth. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate
until cool. Transfer the crust to a serving plate. Spread the
cream cheese mixture over the crust. Arrange fruit on top.
Cut into wedges and serve or refrigerate up to two hours,
covered and uncut.
Makes eight servings. Each serving has 190 calories, 8
grams (g) of fat, 26 g of carbohydrate, 5 g of protein, 2 g of
fiber and 130 milligrams of sodium.

Sweet clover contains a high level of a chemical that can
be converted to an anticoagulant.
Improperly curing hay made from certain sweet clover
varieties such as white and yellow sweet clover can cause
severe and often fatal hemorrhages in livestock such as
cattle, sheep and goats.
“Unfortunately, proper harvesting can be difficult,” says
Gerald Stokka, North Dakota State University Extension
Service livestock stewardship specialist and veterinarian. “If
cutting is delayed until full bloom, the large, high-moisture
stems will take a longer time to dry than the leaves. This
will increase leaf shatter and decrease quality. If baled in
early maturity with increased moisture content, mold growth
may develop.”
The problem with sweet clover is that it contains a high
level of a unique, naturally occurring chemical known as
coumarin. Mold causes coumarin to be converted to dicoumarol, which is a potent anticoagulant. Dicoumarol also
interferes with the metabolism of vitamin K, which the body
needs for blood coagulation.
That is a concern to producers because sweet clover is used
as livestock feed. It grows in many annual pastures and can
become abundant in years following good rainfall in the fall.
Cattle consuming affected feed likely will not exhibit
symptoms until the disease becomes severe. At that point,
inadequate blood coagulation causes the animals to become
weak and experience an increased heart rate, anemia, bloody
milk and black, tarlike manure.
“Many of these symptoms may go unnoticed, and often
extensive internal bruising is discovered after the animal
has died,” Stokka says.
“Dicoumarol also has been shown to cause reproductive
disease in cattle.”
Newborn calves are more susceptible to sweet clover
disease than older animals because the calves usually are
deficient in vitamin K and unable to protect themselves from
the toxin. In mature animals, toxicity usually occurs after
they’ve consumed 20 to 30 milligrams of dicoumarol per
kilogram of hay for several weeks.
Stokka recommends that producers remove sweet clover
from their livestock’s diet at the first signs of toxicity. In
severe cases, administering whole blood intravenously can
resolve hemorrhages and anemia immediately. Administering
injectable vitamin K1 also has been shown to be an effective
treatment strategy.
The synthetic vitamin K3 is available in injectable and
oral forms, allowing for easier treatment, but it has not been
shown to be effective, Stokka says.
Replacing or blending moldy sweet clover with a highquality forages will help avoid the effects of dicoumarol.
Also, haylage or silage made from sweet clover is less likely
to have coumarin convert to dicoumarol because anaerobic
conditions necessary for proper ensiling are not conducive
to mold growth.
“To be safe, producers should have their sweet clover hay
tested to determine the dicoumarol content,” Stokka advises.

Other methods of reducing the risk of sweet clover disease include:
• Planting sweet clover varieties with low coumarin content
• Curing and drying sweet clover carefully before baling
• Avoiding feeding sweet clover forages in late gestation
• Blending all predominantly sweet clover forages
suspected of contamination with other forages or feeding
these forages for only a short time, such as five to seven
days, to avoid the cumulative effects on the animals’ clotting mechanism.
