WILL VRASPIR wvraspir@hastingstribune.com A 38-year-old Hastings man Friday denied raping a 13-yearold girl three years ago. Maurice O. Marshall pleaded not guilty in Adams County District Court to two counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child. Adams County District Judge Terri Harder set his pre-trial hearing for Jan. 12 at 9:30 a.m. The alleged victim, now 16, told police that Marshall raped her when she was 13. The girl said she was alone in the house with Marshall while her mother was at work. He reportedly started making several sexual references to her and tried to get her to smoke K2, a synthetic substance similar to marijuana. She refused but he pushed her onto a bed and raped her. When the girl was 14, Marshall again allegedly raped the girl. On this and subsequent occaisions, Marshall allegedly gave the girl K-2 in exchange for sex. In Nebraska, anyone under the age of 16 cannot legally consent to sexual contact. First-degree sexual assault of a child, a Class 1B felony punishable by 15 years to life in prison.
