From the Administrator, Fr. James Merold
My Dear People,
Lord, your summons echo true
When you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you
And never be the same.
In your company I’ll go
Where your love and foot-steps show.
Thus I’ll move and live and grow
In you and you in me.
These words come from the hymn “The Summons.” I can’t sing the text of this hymn without a tear coming to
my eyes. I picture Jesus calling me to follow him, and I ponder how to respond. And then I wonder if I have
made the right response. Is my answer sufficient for what God is asking of me?
In the second reading for today, the Lord gives us a solemn warning regarding our behavior at the end of time.
We are told that the Lord will come like a thief in the night. And will we be prepared when that happens? How
did we use the talents that the Lord has given to each of us?
As we end this liturgical year, we need to focus on how we are daily responding to the Lord. We are hoping that
the Lord will say to us what he says to the servant in today’s Gospel: “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
Next weekend, on the final celebration of the church year, we are directed to turn our attentions to Jesus Christ
as the King and center of our lives. We will be asked to renew our baptismal promises and once again declare
our loyalty to Him. Come next weekend and be prepared once again to give your hearts to Jesus.
Here at St. Bede, faithful followers of the Lord have been answering the summons of the Lord since Cardinal
Mundelein founded the parish on May 24, 1928. Of course the faith was being lived and practiced in this area
since 1840. We are the heirs of that devotions to Roman Catholic belief and tradition. As we continue to
respond to that summons we pledge ourselves to our St. Bede Mission Statement to be a welcoming spiritual
community where sacraments, education and evangelization lead us to Jesus Christ. This weekend, I am
speaking to you about the Annual Fund Drive for our school and how this ministry helps us to answer the
Lord’s Summons to us.
In Christ,
Father Jim Merold

Music for Advent
The Order of Mass is designed to be sung. Here are the responses to the majority of the prayers offered during the
Mass. It was the desire of Blessed Pope Paul VI during Vatican II that when the Mass was translated from Latin into
the vernacular that all people of the church sing a common response. When the Third Edition of the Roman Missal
was introduced, the Conference of Bishops echoed this desire and set a common chant response for churches in
the United States. This is commonly referred to as the Chant Mass. We will learn this setting before Mass and sing
it during Advent.

Families and the Gospel

As the man in today’s gospel entrusted his servants
with his money, so God has ’entrusted’ our family to us.
Like the good servants we are expected, not to play it
safe, but to selflessly and totally invest ourselves in
each other. — by Bud Ozar

Sidewalk and Step Replacement
is Coming
After much consideration we have decided to replace
the steps on the south side of the front entrance to
the Church. In addition, about 18 feet of sidewalk will
be replaced at the base of those same steps. If you’re
wondering why at this time, we determined that we
had a safety hazard especially as we are headed into
winter’s snow and ice.
A schedule has not as yet been determined but we
are hoping to begin during next week. Once begun,
we have been advised that the area will not be
available for use for at least 2 weeks. For those who
park in the south lot we ask that you use the Wilson
Road sidewalk to get to the north lot and enter the
Church through either the north or main entrance.
Please do not walk into traffic behind the garage
and Rectory.
Thank you for your patience and understanding
during this period.

FALL
BLOOMS!
Sue Glashagel from Prunella’s Flower Shoppe in Fox Lake
created beautiful fall arrangements at the St. Bede Women’s
Club meeting on November 3rd. She used cut flowers, plants,
and artificial decorations to make five beautiful floral designs.
Each woman at the meeting received a carnation and five
lucky ladies got to take home one of Sue’s creations.
Join us for our December
meeting when the St. Bede
School Choir will perform
Christmas music. Our next
meeting is December 1st at
6:00 PM.
“Feed the Hungry”
It is Thanksgiving time and time for us to give thanks for all our generous volunteers and parishioners
who have given their time and those who have donated their hard earned money to the Society of
St. Vincent de Paul over the past 12 months. Your efforts have relieved so much suffering here in our
neighborhoods. The following will show you how much we can accomplish together, along with the
guidance of the Holy Spirit.
• 907 calls were received for assistance.
• 616 neighbors helped with referrals, food or financial assistance.
• 81 home visits were made.
• 1133 total meals served at our monthly dinners for those in need.
• 3 Trucks from Northern Illinois Food bank were brought to St. Bede, filled with food to share with hundreds of our
hungry neighbors.
• 58,474 lbs. food distributed through our food pantry, harvest table (at our monthly dinner) and NIFB Truck.
• 4229 total number of people who received food (2633 households).
• 267 Coats were donated for our Coat drive.
• 120 guests found coats for their families at our coat give-away.
• 9 large bags of left-over coats were donated to the homeless on Lower Wacker Drive in Chicago.
7334 volunteer hours made the above activities happen here at St. Bede.
Thank you and God bless you!
