ALBANY (6-4, 2-4) SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2014 VILLANOVA STADIUM (12,000) VILLANOVA, PA. TALLY ON TALLEY: Villanova head coach Andy Talley is currently in his 30th year as the Wildcat mentor. The winningest coach in school history, Talley’s record on the Main Line currently stands at 212-127-1 (.625). His 35-year overall coaching record is 240-145-2 (.623). Last season, Talley became the 37th coach in all divisions of college football to win 200 games at one school and just the eighth active coach with that distinction. Throughout his Wildcat career, Talley has guided Villanova to 10 NCAA playoff appearances, six conference championships, three Lambert Meadowlands Cup, three ECAC Team of the Year awards, three national semifinal appearances and the 2009 national championship. FIRST TIME FOE: Villanova and Albany will meet for the first time on the football field when the two teams play on Saturday night at Villanova Stadium. Albany is currently in its second season in the CAA. HOME SWEET HOME: The Wildcats enter play this week against Albany with a perfect 5-0 record at home. Villanova has scored over 40 points in all five home games this season and are averaging 46.6 points per game at Villanova Stadium. The team’s five home wins include Fordham (50-6), James Madison (49-31), Rhode Island (4421) Morgan State (48-28) and Towson (42-14). SENIOR SALUTE: Prior to Saturday’s game, Villanova will honor the senior members of the team during a pregame Senior Night ceremony. Villanova recognizes all the players who are seniors academically, as well as the fifth-year senior members of the team. Some players who will participate in the ceremony will be back next season as fifth year seniors. WINNING WAYS: By virtue of its 8-2 record, Villanova has already clinched a winning season in 2014. This represents the 12th time in the last 14 years and the 23rd time in head coach Andy Talley’s 30 years on the Wildcat sideline that Villanova has posted a winning campaign. CAA HONORS: Wildcat senior safety Joe Sarnese has been named the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week. Sarnese earns the honor for his play in last Saturday’s 42-14 win over the Towson Tigers. In the victory, Sarnese tallied a game-high 11 tackles to go with one interception and one pass break-up. The interception was returned 48 yards for a touchdown that gave the Wildcats a 35-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. Sarnese has started all 10 games this year and has recorded 60 tackles, three interceptions and two tackles for loss. He now has nine career interceptions to his credit. UP ONE SPOT: After last week’s win over the Towson Tigers, Villanova moved up one spot from No. 7 to No. 6 in this week’s Sports Network poll. Villanova is one of five CAA teams to be ranked in the poll this week. New Hampshire leads the way for the league at No. 1 followed by Villanova at No. 6, Richmond at No. 14, William & Mary at No. 24 and James Madison at No. 25. Villanova is 2-1 this year versus Top 25 opponents with wins over No. 11 Fordham (506) and No. 15 William & Mary (35-31) and a loss to No. 13 Richmond (10-9). WEEK 11 VS. Score by Quarters Villanova Syracuse SYRACUSE, N.Y.--In a gritty performance against an FBS and ACC opponent No. 12 Villanova was stifled on a two-point conversion attempt in the second overtime and fell by a final score of 27-26 to Syracuse in front of an announced crowd of 41,189 at the Carrier Dome. A game that featured the Wildcats second punt return for a touchdown in the last 30 years had no shortage of gut-wrenching momentum swings in the fourth quarter and the overtime periods before the host Orange pulled out a victory by the narrowest of margins. Junior quarterback John Robertson, who had 314 yards of total offense on the night, completed consecutive passes to junior running back Gary Underwood for a combined 20 yards on the final two offensive plays of the game. After an 11-yard completion on 3rd-and-5 from the 20-yard line, Robertson connected again and Underwood made a one-handed catch in the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown which pulled Villanova to within 27-26. Syracuse had the ball first in the second extra period and scored on a one-yard touchdown pass from punter Riley Dixon to tight end Kendall Moore on a fake field goal. In the two overtime periods the Orange ran nine goal-to-go plays, including seven from inside the five-yard line, and each time the Wildcats came up with potentially game-saving stops to thwart a touchdown. It was after those nine plays that Syracuse opted for the trick play, and Dixon’s touchdown pass put the Orange in front, 27-20. Villanova tried for heroics of its own after answering with a touchdown of its own. Robertson was stuffed on a quarterback sneak to end the game. Senior kicker Chris Gough kicked a 24-yard field goal to give the Wildcats a 20-17 lead in the first overtime period and the Orange answered with a 22-yard make by Ryan Norton after coming up inches short of a touchdown. Senior nose guard Pat Williams stopped running back Adonis Ameen-Moore on first-and-goal from the one and junior Jordan Hunter came up with an equally big stop for a three-yard loss on second down. The late-game excitement really started late in the third quarter when senior Poppy Livers returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown to cut into the Syracuse lead and get Villanova to within three points at 17-14 with 2:34 remaining in the third period. Livers also had a 66-yard punt return touchdown at Georgia State two years ago and is the only Wildcats player in the 30-year Andy Talley era to achieve the feat. His big return marked the first points for Villanova since early in the second quarter. On their ensuing possession after Livers’ touchdown the Orange went threeand-out and the Wildcats then ate up more than nine minutes of clock on a 19play, 80-yard drive which culminated with Gough kicking a game-tying 25-yard field goal with 7:14 to play in the fourth quarter. Syracuse went three-and-out again on its next possession and Villanova held the ball for nearly all of what was left in regulation. Gough had a 25-yard field goal attempt to win the game with 12 seconds to play but the kick was wide right. Robertson finished the game with 115 rushing yards on a career-high 34 carries and he also went 16-of-27 through the air for 199 yards and a touchdown. During the game he passed Vince Thompson (1975-78) and moved into third place in school history in rushing yards. Robertson has now rushed for 2,542 yards in his career and he also tallied his 11th career 100-yard rushing game. That is tied with Thompson for the second-most in school history. Senior running back Kevin Monangai ran for 46 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. His five-yard scoring run with 10:17 left in the second quarter got the Wildcats on the scoreboard and tied the game at 7-7. Livers had a team-high five receptions for 58 yards and finished with 138 all-purpose yards thanks to two punt returns totaling 80 yards, including the 67-yard return for a score. A terrific defensive effort by Villanova was led by junior linebacker Don Cherry, who had a team-high nine tackles and made two tackles for loss. During regulation the Wildcats held the ball for more than 37 minutes and Villanova finished the game with 87 offensive plays compared to 69 for the Orange. The contest was the first overtime affair for the Wildcats since a 28-21 win over Delaware on November 20, 2010. Villanova is 10-5 in overtime games during Talley’s coaching tenure and had not lost since a four-overtime loss at Massachusetts (32-24) on October 13, 2007. WEEK 11 VS. Five different offensive players scored touchdowns for Villanova, which also got a pick-six from a defensive unit that finished the day with two interceptions, six sacks and 12 total tackles for loss without allowing a touchdown. Scoring Summary: 1st 3:58 Villanova - John Robertson 20 yd run (Steve Weyler kick), 14-70 5:55, Villanova 7 - Fordham 0 Junior quarterback John Robertson threw for 216 yards and three touchdowns on 17-of-24 passing. He also ran for 61 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries before sitting out nearly the entire second half with the game’s outcome already well in hand. Senior wide receiver Poppy Livers led all players with eight receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Senior running back Austin Medley also caught a touchdown pass, while junior running back Gary Underwood and freshman running back Matt Gudzak each ran for scores. 2nd The game was delayed due to lightning for just over an hour early in the second quarter. Villanova led 7-3 at the time of the delay and just before play was halted the Rams had used a timeout to mull a 4th-and-6 play from the Wildcats 36-yard line. The teams had just taken the field following the timeout when play was suspended with 13:49 to play in the second quarter. After the delay, Fordham went for it on fourth down and quarterback Michael Nebrich was sacked by senior nose guard Pat Williams as the Rams turned the ball over on downs. Villanova then went on to score 26 unanswered points in a span of 10:52 to end the half and take a commanding 33-3 lead into the locker rooms. Underwood scored on a one-yard touchdown run to cap an 11-play drive coming out of halftime and the Wildcats scored twice in the fourth quarter on a field goal by senior kicker Chris Gough and a 61-yard touchdown run by Gudzak on the second carry of his collegiate career. He had picked up five yards one play earlier on his first career run. Fordham was held to a 31-yard field goal by Micheal Marando in the first quarter and a 38-yard attempt by Marando just before the end of the third period. Nebrich completed 14-of-28 passes for 182 yards and two interceptions before coming out of the game late. Sam Ajala led the Rams with seven receptions for 95 yards. If the turning point of the game wasn’t the weather delay, it would have been the interception by sophomore defensive end Austin Calitro which was returned 35 yards for a touchdown with 4:51 left in the second quarter. That score stretched the Villanova lead to 26-3 but also ended a dubious streak for the Wildcats defense. Prior to the interception, Villanova had not forced a turnover by its opponents in a stretch of 447 plays. The streak dated back to the middle of last year’s game against Towson on October 12, 2013 and included six full games and parts of two others. 1:49 Fordham - Michael Marando 31 yd field goal, 7-71 2:09, Villanova 7 - Fordham 3 10:52 Villanova - Austin Medley 16 yd pass from John Robertson (Steve Weyler kick failed), 7-61 2:49, Villanova 13 - Fordham 3 6:04 Villanova - Poppy Livers 9 yd pass from John Robertson (Steve Weyler kick failed), 7-49 3:02, Villanova 19 - Fordham 3 4:51 Villanova - Austin Calitro 35 yd interception return (Chris Gough kick), Villanova 26 - Fordham 3 0:57 Villanova - Poppy Livers 21 yd pass from John Robertson (Chris Gough kick), 7-61 1:29, Villanova 33 - Fordham 3 3rd 10:18 Villanova - Gary Underwood 1 yd run (Chris Gough kick), 11-77 4:42, Villanova 40 - Fordham 3 0:11 Fordham - Michael Marando 38 yd field goal, 7-9 2:46, Villanova 40 - Fordham 6 4th 10:47 Villanova - Chris Gough 42 yd field goal, 10-40 4:24, Villanova 43 - Fordham 6 6:24 Villanova - Matt Gudzak 61 yd run (Chris Gough kick), 2-66 0:34, Villanova 50 - Fordham 6 First Downs Rushes-Yards Passing Yards Passes Attempts-Completions-INT Total Offensive Plays-Yards Fumble Returns-Yards-TDs Punt Returns-Yards-TDs Kickoff Returns-Yards-TDs Interception Returns-Yards-TDs Punts (Number-Average) Fumbles-Lost Penalties-Yards Possession Time Third-Down Conversions Fourth-Down Conversions Red-Zone Scores-Chances Sacks By: Number-Yards FOR 14 27-18 201 36-16-2 63-219 0-0-0 0-0-0 6-88-0 0-0-0 6-39.5 0-0 3-35 26:28 4 of 14 0 of 2 2-2 3-23 VU 28 55-300 214 25-18-0 80-514 0-0-0 3-21-0 2-60-0 2-67-1 1-37.0 2-1 11-117 33:32 10 of 15 1 of 2 5-6 6-36 Calitro registered the first interception and first touchdown of his career to snap the streak and junior safety Cameron McCurry tallied his fifth career interception and a 32-yard return later in the second quarter. Following the game-winning score, Villanova held off the Tribe’s last-gasp comeback attempt in the waning seconds to secure its eighth win in the last 10 meetings between the teams. The victory is also the third in the Wildcats last four trips to Zable Stadium and improved the team’s record to 43-37 (.538) all-time in games between two ranked teams. Villanova also won a game on its final possession for the first time since a memorable 35-34 win over Delaware last year in the 2013 season finale. There were three ties and four lead changes in the game, including three lead changes in the final 17 minutes. Robertson scored on a three-yard run with 1:54 remaining in the third quarter to give the Wildcats a 28-24 lead. That was the first lead of the second half for Villanova, which trailed by a touchdown (21-14) at halftime and then knotted the score at 21-all on a one-yard run by Monangai just over four minutes into third quarter. William & Mary went back in front, 24-21, on a 26-yard field goal by John Carpenter in the middle of the third period and Robertson’s second touchdown run of the game restored the Wildcats advantage. In the fourth quarter, a three-yard touchdown pass from Tribe quarterback Steve Cluley to Andrew Caskin gave William & Mary a 31-28 lead with 10:23 remaining in the game. On its ensuing possession after the Tribe retook the lead, Villanova gained just six yards on six plays and William & Mary ran more than five minutes off the clock on a nine-play possession before finally punting the ball away with 1:51 showing on the clock. Heavy pressure was put on Tribe punter Hunter Windmuller, whose punt went only two yards and gave the Wildcats the ball at their own 31-yard line with 1:51 to play and no timeouts. Robertson ran 11 times for 99 yards, including a season-long 56-yard burst for a touchdown on the Wildcats first play from scrimmage in the game. Villanova wound up running for 364 yards in its best rushing performance in just over two years. 2nd In addition to the Wildcats finding the end zone four times on the ground, Robertson also threw touchdown passes to senior wide receiver Poppy Livers, junior wide receiver Kevin Gulyas and senior tight end Doug Turrell. Robertson was 13-of-18 for 143 yards in the game and has now thrown 25 touchdown passes with only one interception this season. Turrell’s four-yard touchdown reception with 3:38 to play in the opening period marked the first career catch for the one-time lineman. 3rd For the entire first half, the Bears were more than game to trade scores with Villanova despite never taking a lead of their own. Morgan State took advantage of a pair of lost fumbles by the Wildcats and answered each of the first three Villanova touchdowns with scores of their own. Ricky Fisk scored on a three-yard run with 1:04 to play before halftime and the teams went into the locker rooms with score tied at 21-21. After the Bears went three-and-out on the first drive of the game, the Wildcats took over at their own 44-yard line and Robertson zipped down the field for a 56-yard score. Morgan State went three-and-out for a second time after the Villanova score, but the Wildcats fumbled the ensuing point and the Bears recovered at the Villanova 33-yard line. Just one play later, Skillon threw a 33-yard strike for a game-tying touchdown to Martin and the score was knotted at 7-7. Thanks to the big scoring plays, the turnover by the Wildcats and the two straight three-and-out possessions by Morgan State, the first six drives of the game took up just 2:10 of clock time. Villanova retook the lead at 14-7 on Turrell’s touchdown with 3:38 to play in the opening period, while the Bears answered on Skillon’s three-yard run with 9:05 left in the second quarter. Robertson connected with Gulyas for a 22-yard touchdown with 5:32 remaining in the period and Fisk’s three-yard run tied the score for the third time just before the intermission. Monangai put the Wildcats ahead to stay with his one-yard scoring run at the 11:07 mark of the third quarter. Robertson scored on a four-yard run with 7:53 to play in the third period and Livers caught a four-yard pass for a touchdown with 5:41 left in the quarter. Monangai’s 81-yard touchdown run three minutes later closed the scoring for Villanova, while Morgan State found the end zone one more time when Skillon scored from one yard out early in the fourth quarter. Entering the game, the Bears were one of just two FCS teams (along with Citadel) who had not thrown an interception all season long. That changed in a big way as the Wildcats defense picked off Skillon three times. Score by Quarters Villanova Richmond Richmond, Va.--In a game where both teams managed just a field goal and a touchdown while combining for seven turnovers, No. 4 Villanova saw its sevengame winning streak come to an end in a 10-9 loss to No. 13 Richmond at E. Claiborne Robins Stadium. Both teams scored a touchdown in the third quarter but a missed extra point by the Wildcats eventually proved to be the difference in the game. Villanova was held to just 253 yards of total offense, its smallest output since being limited to 244 yards at home against Old Dominion on October 22, 2011. The tone for the game was set in the first quarter, when there were a total of six turnovers and just eight first downs between the two teams. In addition to seeing their winning streak come to an end, the Wildcats also lost to the Spiders for just the fourth time in the last 11 meetings. Neither team put points on the board until freshman kicker Steve Weyler made a 24-yard field goal with 2:39 to play in the second quarter which sent Villanova into halftime with a 3-0 lead. The attempt was only the second field goal try for the Wildcats in the last seven games and Weyler made his first career field goal by converting the attempt. There were points scored on the first three possessions of the second half before each team was shut down the rest of the way. Richmond tied the score at 3-3 when Peter Yoder made a 37-yard field goal with 12:26 remaining in the third quarter. 1 0 0 2 3 0 3 6 10 4 0 0 Score 9 10 Record (7-2, 4-1) (7-2, 4-1) Scoring Summary: 2nd 2:39 Villanova - Steve Weyler 24 yd field goal, 12-64 5:35, Villanova 3 - Richmond 0 3rd 12:26 Richmond - Peter Yoder 37 yd field goal, 4-minus 13 1:32, Villanova 3 - Richmond 3 8:10 Villanova - Lincoln Collins 5 yd pass from John Robertson (Steve Weyler kick failed), 9-75 4:16, Villanova 9 - Richmond 3 6:18 Richmond - Michael Rocco 15 yd run (Peter Yoder kick), 6-65 1:52, Richmond 10, Villanova 9 First Downs Rushes-Yards Passing Yards Passes Attempts-Completions-INT Total Offensive Plays-Yards Fumble Returns-Yards-TDs Punt Returns-Yards-TDs Kickoff Returns-Yards-TDs Interception Returns-Yards-TDs Punts (Number-Average) Fumbles-Lost Penalties-Yards Possession Time Third-Down Conversions Fourth-Down Conversions Red-Zone Scores-Chances Sacks By: Number-Yards VU 14 44-114 139 26-12-2 70-253 0-0-0 1-0-0 3-44-0 2-1-0 6-46.2 2-1 3-16 30:21 6 of 17 1 of 3 2-3 1-14 UR 19 32-66 314 42-21-2 74-380 0-0-0 2-0-0 2-44-0 2-0-0 5-38.6 2-2 3-20 29:39 5 of 16 0 of 0 2-4 2-8 Villanova responded by driving 75 yards on nine plays in its best offensive possession of the day.
