CATALOGUE 292
We recently produced a short eList of about 20 books which was emailed
to those whose email addresses we have.
It is not viable to post such small lists, but as we intend to produce more
of these in 2015, please let us have your email address if you would like to
receive them and we don’t already have your email address on record.
We still print our usual monthly list in hard copy form, though if you would
also like to receive this by email, then please let us know.
The advantage of the on-line version is that all the photos throughout the
catalogue are in colour whereas the hard copy will have colour photos only
on the outside covers. You can always see the on-line version by clicking
on the link on our home page www.antiquebookshop.com.au.
You will have noticed that to make our last catalogue more visually interesting we had used many more photographs internally. We have continued
doing this with this catalogue, and will continue to do it in the future.
By the time you receive this it will be mid-November, however we will
produce a December catalogue which will reach you in time for orders to
despatched and received in time for Christmas.
As usual, we will take a break in January and will resume issuing catalogues
in February 2015.
I trust you find something of interest in this current catalogue, No.292.
Best Wishes

The Duchess Anna Amalia Library in
Weimar, Germany - one of the country’s
finest special collections - suffered a disastrous fire in 2004. 50,000 books were
lost to the flames, 25% of which were
considered to be irreplaceable. One of the
titles believed lost was Copernicus’s
1543 treatise De Revolutionibus Coelestium, LibriVI, an essential work in the
history of science.
Written towards the end of Copernicus’s
life, it offers mathematical proof that the earth rotates around
the sun and spins on its own axis. This year, ten years after the
fire, this volume was found again amongst a group of books
awaiting restoration.
Even in its damaged state, the library’s copy is thought to be
valued at $1.8m.

Dylan Thomas
The Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) is being feted in his
homeland and abroad in the year of his 100th birthday.
Thomas’ works include “Do not go gentle into that good night”
and “The hunchback in the park”.
The subject of much literary criticism and commentary over the
years, he has been compared to T.S.Eliot and W.H.Auden.
Most events will take place at the Dylan Thomas National Literature Centre in Swansea. The Centre is housed in the Guildhall,
a Victorian-era building extensively refurbished and opened to
the public in 1995 by former president Jimmy Carter.
T.E.Lawrence Map
The only map T.E.Lawrence is believed to have drawn was pulled
from sale by its owner.
The almost century-old map, entitled “Hejaz Railway to Wadi
Sirhan” was to have been sold at Sotheby’s on November 4,
where it would have been the centrepiece of the sale.
The pre-sale estimate was 70,000 to 100,000 pounds.
