Please ask at first session TA contact Information : Specific for each section. Please ask at first session Office Hours : Most of the labs do not require the entire lab period. You are encouraged to discuss any questions or concerns with your TA before you leave the lab for the day. If you need to meet with your TA outside of lab, contact him/her to make an appointment. COURSE OBJECTIVES Genetics Laboratory course focuses on both Classical Genetics and molecular genetics. Genetics Lab course will - - Acquaint the students with the mechanics of experimentation and the methods and techniques of experimental genetics Familiarize the students with the genetic principles in a first hand manner as they see these principles operate in a controlled experimental setting Introduce students to learn plant and animal chromosomes and their behavior in somatic cells and in sex cells. Introduce students to learn about eukaryotic genetics using yeast as a model. Introduce students to classical genetics as they perform experiments with the model organism Drosophila. Introduce students to basic molecular genetics laboratory skills like bacterial transformation, viral transduction, bacterial conjugation, restriction endonuclease digestion of DNA, gel electrophoresis and amplification of DNA by Polymerase Chain Reaction. Train the students to learn and perform experiments, collect data, analyze the data learn to interpret the data and draw conclusion from it. Provide students with opportunities to develop science writing skills. It is required that you are concurrently enrolled in Bios 220 or have taken this course before Bios 221. Consequently, it is presumed that you will have access to a general genetics text that will serve to provide the background and theory about most of the experiments in the lab course. In addition during this course BIOS 221 GENETICS LABORATORY you will be provided with handouts that will further enhance your understanding of the concepts and methodologies of the experiments that you will be performing in the laboratory. Carefully study the syllabus and pay special attention to deadlines, exam dates etc. Immediately notify your TA if you have a conflict. Also notify me by email. Always mention the day and time of your section when you send me an email so I can help you better. GRADING The points for this course are derived from quizzes, lab reports, projects and exams. Possible Number of Points = 500 Written Exams (2 exams, 100 points each) Quizzes (Top 10 at 10 points each) Lab Report Lab Presentations Final Practical Exam Participation = = = = = = 200 100 80 20 100 Required - Exams and Lab reports are graded by the TA. The TA will discuss the exam in class on the day that is indicated in the syllabus. You MUST return the exam back to the TA before you leave the class. If you have any concerns with grading, you must address them the day that the exam/report is returned. If there is not enough time, return your exam to the TA and ask them to bring it to the next class. You can send me a mail and discuss the exam with me, but this MUST be done within the next session after returning the exam. - NO REQUESTS FOR REGRADING PREVIOUS ENTERTAINED AT THE END OF SEMESTER EXAMS WILL BE LABS Do not enter the lab until your instructor asks you even if the door is open. Be prepared to show your University ID when asked by your instructor at all time in class and during exam. Failure to do so could result in loss of partial or total points. BIOS 221 GENETICS LABORATORY The Teaching assistant in charge of your section is your instructor for this course. You are expected to have read the handouts BEFORE the relevant class. Your TA will explain to you the theory behind the experiment, provide a background for the experiment, explain the methods and procedure to be followed in performing the experiment and guide you in the analysis of the data that you collect. If you feel that your TA is not explaining the background for the labs or not answering your questions properly, let me know in the first few weeks so I can talk to the TA. If you ask for points later on in the semester because you feel your TA did not explain the topics well, I will not be able to do anything. You are expected to and are responsible for reading the background material posted on Blackboard so that you are prepared for the lab. If you have any questions or concerns about understanding of the concepts or the experiment, you should address them during the lab period or in the subsequent labs. In addition, there are ‘review’ sessions scheduled before the exam when you should bring up any questions. You can also always email me any questions that you may have or email to make appointment to meet with me. QUIZZES Quizzes are distributed at the beginning of your lab section and are collected after ten minutes. If you come late to the lab without a valid reason and miss the quiz, there is no way for you to make up that quiz. Incase of an emergency, or if you have a valid reason, check with me. Your TWO lowest quiz scores will be dropped in the calculation of your final point total. There are no make-up labs unless your absence is due to a valid reason. Inform your TA AND me immediately about any possible conflict with lab. Do not assume that it is ok for you to miss lab due to travel plans. If you miss a lab without a valid excuse, you could be penalized by 10 points per lab. LATE REPORT - You are given plenty of time to complete your lab report. Lab Reports are considered late if submitted any later than 15 minutes after the scheduled beginning of your lab section in which they are due. - You will be penalized five points for each day that your lab report is late beginning with the day that the report is due. BIOS 221 GENETICS LABORATORY - No requests such as not finding the printer or printer not working will be entertained. If you anticipate any problems, print your report a day or two in advance. - DO NOT email your report to your TAs. You must submit a printed copy. If you have completed the report but have an emergency that prevents you from getting to the campus, follow the instructions on late report. When you submit the assignment, include documents that show the nature of your emergency. - If there is any emergency because of which you can not come in to class to turn in the report, notify your TA and me in advance so we can instruct you appropriately. MISSED EXAMS - The exam dates are provided in the syllabus. If there is a valid conflict, inform me immediately so that alternative arrangements can be made. Students who miss an Exam without notifying me will get a zero on the exam. - Make sure that you leave enough time to reach the lab on the exam day so you do not miss the exam because of missed train or broken car. - If you miss the exam without a valid reason you will be given a zero. Please do not assume that your reason would be considered valid, inform the TA AND me as soon as you can so that necessary steps can be taken in time. DO NOT wait till the last minute to send an email as you may receive a zero for the exam in such a situation. - This policy is NOT valid for final exam. All students are required to give the Final Exam. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Cheating will not be tolerated. During the tests we will assume that you are cheating if your eyes wander from your test paper to another’s. You will not be allowed to carry cell phones, calculators etc to the exam. Any act of academic dishonesty will be punished severely. Cheating includes, but is not limited to BIOS 221 GENETICS LABORATORY falsification of data, plagiarism of published material, copying another student’s work and accepting or giving help during quizzes or exams.
