Unengaged employees have unproductive mindsets and are more likely to leave their organizations, even for a small pay increase. When employees leave their jobs for other opportunities, they abandon difficult-to-fill roles. Today, many organizations suffer from a “skill supply chain” challenge, meaning there are not enough qualified or quality employees to fill the positions with the greatest demand. One way organizations can continue to ensure their employees grow with their organization is to provide them with opportunities for professional development. A 2012 study by the Society for Human Resource Management found 86 percent of employees consider an organization’s commitment to professional development “very important” or “important.” Online learning, otherwise known as eLearning, is an excellent opportunity for companies to keep training costs down while still offering exceptional professional development – leadership and skills development – courses. eLearning: A History Distance learning capabilities have exploded in the last decade, but eLearning as a concept has been around for more than 20 years. The first electronic learning leveraged pre-loaded training software, which was either downloaded onto an employee’s personal computer or stored on a shared machine in the office. The main challenges with this type of training were price and accessibility. Stand-alone software came with a hefty price tag and was difficult to distribute. Additionally, it could not be easily updated. Stand-alone software evolved into use of CD-ROMs loaded with learning content. These were easier to share, but still expensive to create. And, they were difficult to update as industry standards and best practices changed. Eventually, professional development moved to the World Wide Web. The web offered the ability for all employees in an organization to connect to the same portal and engage in training opportunities. This drove down costs, increased accessibility and allowed for these trainings to be updated more regularly. The challenge with the first phase of web-based learning, however, was that it tended to be primitive in its sophistication and therefore less-than-engaging. More importantly, learner engagement and outcomes were not trackable, posing significant compliance issues. Today, organizations can choose to utilize a Learning Management System (LMS), which has brought together many of the earlier eLearning components to offer a unique, blended learning environment. Top LMSs work with industry experts to produce a broad range of relevant content, which can be saved and accessed at any time. The technology allows classes to be easily updated, added to and/or expanded. It also enables as many learners as desired to log on at the same time and learn about a particular subject. Additionally, to ensure learner engagement, LMSs help increase and manage training by tracking performance. myLearningPointe™ is Netsmart’s LMS solution. 2 ©2014 Netsmart How to Start Your eLearning Journey Four things to think about before you take the plunge Before investing in a blended learning opportunity, take these four steps: 1. Understand your audience Think about who would be taking these online courses. Online learning is best for people are at least moderately computer savvy, who love to learn and who have the ability to accept change. 2. Assess your needs Ask yourself whether or not online learning is a means to an end. For example, do you have legal or compliance requirements that need to be communicated to staff? Are there job skill requirements that every member of the team must have? If so, online learning is likely the most efficient and lowest cost option to meet these goals. 3. Take stock Before investing in a LMS, examine what you are already doing and how this new tool might fit into the mix. What is your current professional development budget? Will eLearning help to balance the bottom line? What tools and trainings do you have in place that could be improved or maybe even eliminated if you moved to an LMS? 4. Look forward The key to organizational sustainability is a unique combination of being flexible and also forward-thinking. Before getting started, involve individuals throughout your organization in the development of a professional training plan so that all areas are represented. myLearningPointe™ where learning points to knowledge myLearningPointe myLearningPointe (mLP) is a secure web-based application hosted by Netsmart. Organizations who utilize myLearningPointe can assign and track completion of eLearning courses. The system also supports the dissemination and recording of live training courses. myLearningPointe has supervisor and administrator functionality, which means organizations can choose how much (or how specific) they are about the courses their employees take. The extensive reporting options enable supervisors to see what their staff are taking, how well they are doing and if the classes are having an impact on productivity and/or the bottom line. myLearningPointe course content is geared predominantly toward four areas: clinical compliance, organizational compliance, professional needs and process and tools training. The catalogue of more than 400 courses for these target areas is both extensive and diverse, with the majority of courses (70 percent) offering those who take them continuing education units (CEUs) on a national and state level. The LMS also includes course trainings on Netsmart solutions, so employees working with a Netsmart CareRecord™ or another Netsmart electronic application can become empowered to try new things, to customize and optimize their solutions. Recently, myLearningPointe has launched increased mobile functionality. That means, if employers doubled the amount of eLearning to 36 percent, they could save an average of $14.5 billion per year.
