Executive Director’s Report
On October 1st was our 9th Annual Fundraising Dinner – Building
Pathways For Hope. What an amazing event. It was a moving
evening with various supporters speaking about how important it
is for us to pay attention to our mental wellness. We premiered
our Clubhouse Video, produced by WorkSafe BC, sharing our
members’ stories. And with Andy Birch speaking about how
mental illness had affected his entire life and how Pathways
Clubhouse had put him on the road to recovery. It was also the
launch of our Building Campaign – 14:1 – and we were so
pleased with the response from our community and that evening
we raised over $190,000. To all of our donors, supporters, volunteers, members, board and staff, thank you for making this such a
memorable evening.

Food Services Unit
October has been a busy month in the Food Services Unit. We are glad
to say that with the arrival of Pascale filling in our part-time position,
we finally have a full staff team. Come say hi to Pascale and make her
feel welcome at Pathways! This month we have been doing a lot of
organizing. Come see the changes we’ve made in the kitchen office
and put your two cents in while you have a chance! We have received
wonderful support from the members on our team during this time
of upheaval, and without this support we couldn’t have accomplished
much.
So we want to give special thanks to:
Dave G.--a new and welcome face in the clubhouse. Dave is that special kind of person who is willing to do anything whether it’s grating
cheese or tackling a tower of dishes.
James L.—James stepped in when we had no one to do dishes and
saved our bacon!
Beryl W.—What would we do without our Beryl? She makes sure we
have gloves and wooden spoons and is the steady calm presence we
rely on for food prep and working in the middle at lunch time!
Virginia—Thursdays are special because that’s the day Virginia
comes! As soon as she arrives she’s putting table cloths on the tables,
and she doesn’t stop working until she leaves in the afternoon. We love
it when she sweeps and when she finds us cheap deals on veggies.
Chris W.—Chris comes and does dishes on the worst day—Friday, and
we love it!
Peter M.—We rely on Peter and his steady presence every day. No
one can chop veggies as perfectly and precisely as Peter!
Rob M.—Our master baker! Thanks to Rob for stepping up to the plate
week after week and special function after special function. He even
goes to the store for stuff we forget on a regular basis!
Daniel C.—as a runner or a sandwich maker or food prepper, it’s always great when Daniel walks in the door!
Myrna—Oh Myrna! She’s so fast we can never keep her busy
enough!
Michelle B.—Our soups and Lasagnas are never as good as when
Michelle is here to put her tender loving care into them.
Bruce A.—A man of many talents, we can count on Bruce to be an expert waiter at lunch, a willing presence in the snack bar and he even
helps to clean up and do food prep in the afternoon.
G O O D NE WS
PAGE 9
Sheri—Sheri means business when she’s running food out at lunch
time! She has a sharp eye and makes sure people get all the things they
ordered, and sometimes Sheri is the only one who can read whose
name is on the slip!
Terrance C. Haley—We can count on Terrance every day to: run out
food, wait tables, make the last call for orders and to perform intricate
hand gestures at the end of every lunch!
Fumiyo I.—She’s always ready to waitress and run out food and she
has the neatest printing by far, which we appreciate!
Charlie—Charlie has a special gift to make everyone on the team feel
welcome and heard. He is a great partner in big Costco shops and
budgeting!
Steve B.—He may be a ’ Badman’, but we think that he’s a good man
to have around! It’s especially nice to have his help in afternoon food
prep!
Thomas—Another new face to the clubhouse, we hit the jackpot with
Thomas! He’s an expert in all things kitchen and we love using his
expertise!
Juliet—Thanks Juliet for pitching in on dishes, waitressing or doing
specials. Juliet will help out wherever she’s needed!
Sylvain—Our French Canadian, and snack bar guru! Sylvain keeps the
snack bar ship shape, which takes a big load off of the rest of us!
Ross Medland—Monday’s are “Ross-days” and we work him to the
bone, with grocery shopping, taking orders, clean-up and food prep
after lunch. Ross is there for it all!
Steve D.—Steve has become a regular waiter at lunch time and now we
don’t know what we’d do without him!
Sai S.—Sai is our sandwich expert. Anytime Sai is here, he can be
found at the sandwich station. We always know we can rely on him!
Wendel K.—He keeps our knives sharp and that’s important!
Kathy G—she sets the tables and puts out the water condiments and
fills up the milk in the snack bar!
Alnsir—our sweet Alnasir sets the tables like a pro day after day!
Nina L.—Nina dices and minces like a pro! She’s the best at making
fresh salsa and we love having her in the kitchen!
Thank you everyone! You’re the heroes of the Kitchen Unit!

A HELPING HAND
The circumstances leading up to my mother’s suicide
has left me, at fifteen years old, a nervous wreck.
There were many instances of kindness from strangers
and relatives in the years that followed her death but
there are a couple of them that stick out in my
memory.
In the year after her death from schizophrenia, the remaining three of the family went on a week’s vacation
to a Welsh seaside resort called Fishgard. At the Bed
and Breakfast we stayed at, we met a very friendly
family. The father, Mr. McGaskill, turned out to be in
charge of customs at Birmingham International Airport. A few months later he was kind enough to take
our family on a VIP tour of this airport. The control
tower was neat but my favourite part of the tour was
when he locked his office door, closed the blinds and
brought out samples of confiscated drugs. There were
many, a bar of “Cadbury’s Chocolate” that was actually a bar of Hashish, a plastic vial of Opium which he
told us to smell, and others that I forget. Eye opening
to a sixteen year old boy. The day ended with us invited to his home to sample his homemade beer. What a
great guy!
Two years later I was finishing up my first year of
learning at the University of Victoria. I was still a
nervous wreck and unlikely to succeed at any summer
job interview. A friend of my father worked as a manager in the Parliament Buildings in Victoria. He basically said “to heck” with the interview, and gave me a
G O O D NE WS

So there I was for the summer, working in the drafting
part of the Forestry department. It was a four person
office and there was quite a bit of resentment by the
other three workers that I had been hired. Still, the pay
was good and since I was still living at home I was able
to bank almost all of my earnings. With the money at
hand I decided to take a year off from University and
take a vacation around Europe, which, other than Britain, I had never seen before.
The seven week trip was a lifesaver for me as I came
back with my head in shape and with a new level of
confidence. Although I forget his name, I will always
be thankful to this friend of my father who hired me
and made all this possible.
I landed a job at Jordan River Copper Mine within two
weeks of getting home from the trip. I visited my old
workplace to tell them the good news even though the
three staff had never been that friendly to me.
The first question I was asked sarcastically was “did
your Dad get you the job?” (He didn’t, thanks to the
holiday, I’d done it all myself). That job had given me
one of the biggest helping hands in my life. Thank you
again!

My Mum is My Rock
By Caitlin Norman
The person that helped me through the years with
mental illness is my mum. She was and still is always there
for me. I can talk to her about anything. If I ever feel alone,
she’s there for me. I have always been very close to her. The
times that I have been depressed, sad, and miserable she was
and still is there for me. My mum has anxiety and depression
like me. So she can relate to me a lot and she understands
what I go through. I love my mum a lot! I don’t know where
I’ll be without her.
Helping Hands .
It is a sort of tribute to MOTHER’S all over the world.
My mother’s name is Velma Jean Badman. She is my
hero! First she had to deal with my father, he had
schizophrenia, and was very violent towards her! Then
my first two brothers were out of hand on drugs. My
second oldest brother was admitted to Riverveiw
Hospital in Coquitlam.
Then my third oldest brother was on cocaine. Then she
had to deal with me. The worst thing about my story is
I was molested when I was ten years of age. It was
sixteen years later when I told my Mother. I also was in
the Emergency Rooms over half my life. I really don’t
know how she dealt with it all. I couldn’t. She also was
there for troubled members in my family, as she is now
for everybody.
