FROM THE PRINCIPAL
We are well into our second nine weeks here at Lyman Elementary and we have been involved in
some wonderful activities over the past month!
Students who met their AR goal for the first term attended an AR field trip to Grand Theatre in
D’Iberville to see the movie Box Trolls. The students had a wonderful time and represented
Lyman Elementary very proudly. Students also shopped in the Starbucks Store last week and used
their Starbucks to purchase various items. Starbucks are given out for wonderful behavior
throughout the nine weeks and students are permitted to save their Starbucks to purchase items at
the end of each term. Many students went home with numerous items.
We celebrated Red Ribbon Week, Bus Safety Week, and Pedestrian/Bicycle Safety all in the month
of October. Students dressed up and enjoyed participating in various activities.
This month, Move to Learn is coming to Lyman and we will also hold our yearly Reading Fair.
Please continue to encourage your child to read at home. Our students are doing a wonderful job
with their AR goals and we want to continue rewarding as many students as possible. We look
forward to seeing you soon at our upcoming Reading Fair Family Night.

The Harrison County School
District has purchased this
program for all students in
grades K-8.
This is a web-based program
that provides individualized
instruction based on the
results from the NWEA
assessments that your child
takes three times a year.
We suggest that your child
work in this program for at
least 15 minutes each night.

WE ARE DRUG FREE AT LYMAN ELEMENTARY!
Red Ribbon Week was celebrated last month and students dressed up each day to show their support for Red Ribbon Week!
They also signed pledges stating that they will be drug free! There was also a door decorating contest and the winning
homeroom class receives a pizza party! We are excited that our students, staff and community are committed to being DRUG
FREE!
Did you know that November is Diabetes Awareness Month!
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. If it’s
not controlled, diabetes can cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease, and other
health problems.
One in 12 Americans has diabetes – that’s more than 25 million people. And another 79
million adults in the United States are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The good news? People who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes can lower their risk by
more than half if they make healthy changes. These changes include: eating healthy,
increasing physical activity, and losing weight.
How can American Diabetes Month make a difference?
We can use this month to raise awareness about diabetes risk factors and encourage
people to make healthy changes.
Here are just a few ideas:
 Encourage people to make small changes, like taking the stairs instead of the
elevator.
 Talk to people in your community about getting
regular checkups. They can get their blood pressure
and cholesterol checked, and ask the doctor about
their diabetes risk.
“HATS OFF”
GREAT SUCCESS
HATS off is each Friday for students
that have the following from ThurFriday.
H-Completes all Homework
A-Attends school all day (no late
check-ins or early check-outs)
T-Terrific Behavior
S-Completes Schoolwork in a timely
manner
No more than 3 items can be
purchased by each student.
Students will receive a “HATS OFF TO
ME” sticker to distinguish
recognition. Students are not
allowed to spend more than $1.50
Ask doctors and nurses to be leaders in their
communities by speaking about the importance of
healthy eating and physical activity.
