What can be better than all that? Sandwich is the place to be for Holly Days 2014 and we have a lot of returning family events as well as a few new ones to kick off this year. The Shop Small Saturday and town wide Cookie Stroll start it off on Saturday, November 29th. While it’s nice to think of supporting local businesses on that Saturday, that is something we need to focus on doing all year long. Thanks to the Sandwich Public Library and the Glass Town Cultural District, the Lighting of the Littlest Christmas Tree will take place on Sunday, November 30 at 5 pm on Shawme Pond. The Community Carol Sing will take place on Friday, December 5th at 7 pm at the First Church of Christ and one, as a newcomer, I am looking forward to most. The Home Tour, thanks to Bev Comeau, is alive and well this year, featuring a number of great homes to be seen on Sunday, December 7th. On that day also - a first, courtesy of the Glass Town Cultural District, Cape Cod Chorale’s “Mostly Dickens Carolers” Quartet will be singing Christmas Carols and entertaining downtown shoppers and business owners from 1 pm to 4 pm. Talk about promoting shopping locally! Finally, I want to thank all of the Holly Days volunteers, especially Kirby Holmes of Eastern Bank and Donna Kutil of Scenic Roots who helped to keep this going because they knew it was that special. So plan to join us for some or all of the Holly Days events. It’s time to be thankful for the year we’ve had, look forward to what next year may bring and appreciate the friends, family and town that make us who we are. Holly Days in Sandwich, a program of the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce is full of town wide traditions highlighting our community. And our town is the birthplace and home of a unique family of GIANT light sculptures that appears for a short time each year, with an ever growing list of locations to see them. The first GIANT was born in 1998 and stood alone in what has become GIANT Headquarters - East Sandwich (where most GIANTS live). He is Moto-San the Glassblower who stands as tall as the Glass Studio building where he is displayed roadside, with hundreds of lights covering his steel rebar skeleton. There will be at least 5 new GIANTS this 2014 - 15 season bringing the total to well over 40 GIANTS displayed for your viewing pleasure here in Sandwich. Some locations* have more than one. Some wear their lights in the same way each year. Others have variations. But they all share something in common, they are only viewable for a limited period of time each year, shining brightly in the dark of winter. *The map in the center of this booklet (pages 18-19) indicates the GIANT locations in Sandwich confirmed at time of printing. The exclusive, complete “Official Map of GIANTS” with full titles & locations is available free of charge to customers at The Bee~Hive Tavern on Route 6A in East Sandwich beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving (while supplies last). 4 2014 Seahorse Ornament Seahorses are a truly unique creature, and not just because of their unusual equine shape. Unlike most other fish, some species are monogamous and mate for life. Rarer still, they are among the only animal species on Earth in which the male bears the unborn young. By choosing the seahorse, we celebrate what makes Sandwich unique - from its businesses, homes, and museums to its artists, residents and visitors. Enjoy Sandwich’s historic charm, unique lodging choices, restaurants for the romantic - or the family - and great recreation. Centrally located amid beautiful walking and biking trails, bird sanctuaries, salt water estuaries, fresh water ponds, and seashore. Sandwich offers easy access for the locals to the day-trippers, weekenders, and international travelers alike. Sandwich is rich with history and working museums. This is the town that Glass built - don’t miss out on this one of a kind hand blown glass ornament. Each ornament was blown at the McDermott Glass Studio and each is numbered and signed by the artist. The Seahorse commemorates the 10th annual Holly Days. Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above; Glory to God, all glory in the highest; (Refrain) 27 O Christmas Tree O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, With faithful leaves unchanging. O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, Not only in summer’s heat, But also winter’s snow and sleet, O Christmas Tree, with faithful leaves unchanging. Joy to the World Joy to the world! the Lord is come; Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing 28 Hark! the herald angels sing, Glory to the new-born King! Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled! Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With th’ angelic host proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem! Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born King! Christ, by highest heaven adored; Christ, the everlasting Lord; Late in time behold him come, Offspring of the Virgin’s womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail the incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with man to dwell; Jesus, our Emmanuel! (Refrain) The First Noel The first Noel the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields as they lay, keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. (Refrain) Oh LittleO littleTown of Bethlehem town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee to-night. For Christ is born of Mary, And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth! And praises sing to God the King, And peace to men on earth. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen God rest ye merry gentlemen, let nothing you dismay; Remember Christ our savior was born on Christmas Day, To save us all from Satan’s power when we were gone astray. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy! 29 Silver Bells City sidewalks, busy sidewalks Dressed in holiday style In the air there’s a feeling of Christmas Children laughing, people passing, Meeting smile after smile And on ev’ry street corner you’ll hear Silver bells, silver bells It’s Christmas time in the city Ring-a-ling, hear them sing Soon it will be Christmas day Strings of street lights, even stop lights Blink a bright red and green, As the shoppers rush home with their treasures Hear the snow crunch, See the kids bunch This is Santa’s big scene, and above all this bustle you’ll hear: (Refrain) Deck the Halls Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Don we now our gay apparel, Fa la la, la la la, la la la. Troll the ancient Yuletide carol, Fa la la la la, la la la la. See the blazing Yule before us, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Strike the harp and join the chorus. Fa la la la la, la la la la. Follow me in merry measure, Fa la la la la, la la la la. While I tell of Yuletide treasure. Fa la la la la, la la la la. Jingle Bells Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh Over the fields we go, laughing all the way; Bells on bob-tail ring, making spirits bright What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight Oh - (Refrain) A day or two ago, I thought I’d take a ride And soon Miss Fanny Bright, was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank, misfortune seemed his lot; He got into a drifted bank and we got upsot. Oh - (Refrain) 30 White Christmas I’m dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten, and children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow I’m dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write May your days be merry and bright And may all your Christmases be white It Came Upon a Midnight Clear It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, good will to men, From heaven’s all-gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come With peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats O’er all the weary world; Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hovering wing, And ever o’er its Babel-sounds The blessed angels sing. Away in a Manger Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle ‘til morning is nigh. 31 Angels We Have Heard on High Angels we have heard on high, Singing sweetly through the night, And the mountains in reply Echoing their brave delight. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why these songs of happy cheer? What great brightness did you see? What glad tiding did you hear? Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Silent Night Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright Round yon Virgin Mother and Child Holy Infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight Glories stream from heaven afar Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia! Christ, the Saviour is born Christ, the Saviour is born Silent night, holy night Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth 32 O Holy Night O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining. Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh hear the angel voices! O night divine! The night, when Christ was born! O night, O holy night, O night divine! O night, O holy night, O night divine! Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer Rudolf, the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose. And if you ever saw him, you would even say it glows. All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names. They never let poor Rudolf play in any reindeer games. Then one foggy Christmas eve Santa came to say: “Rudolf with your nose so bright, won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?” Then all the reindeer loved him as they shouted out with glee: “Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer, you’ll go down in history!” Holly Jolly Christmas Have a holly, jolly Christmas; It’s the best time of the year I don’t know if there’ll be snow, but have a cup of cheer. Have a holly, jolly Christmas; And when you walk down the street Say Hello to friends you know and everyone you meet. Oh, ho, the mistletoe hung where you can see; Somebody waits for you; Kiss her once for me. Have a holly jolly Christmas, and in case you didn’t hear, Oh by golly, have a holly, jolly Christmas this year. 33 Santa Claus is Coming to Town Oh, You better watch out, You better not cry, You better not pout, I’m telling you why: Santa Claus is coming to town! He’s making a list, He’s checking it twice, He’s gonna find out who’s naughty or nice. Santa Claus is coming to town! He see’s you when you’re sleeping, He knows when you’re awake. He knows when you’ve been good or bad, So be good for goodness sake! (Refrain) Little tin horns, Little toy drums. Rudy-toot-toot and rummy tum tums. Santa Claus is coming to town. Little toy dolls that cuddle and coo, Elephants, boats and Kiddie cars too. Santa Claus is coming to town. The kids in Girl and Boy Land will have a jubilee. They’re gonna build a toyland town all around the Christmas tree. (Refrain) Frosty the Snowman 34 Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corncob pipe and a button nose, And two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day. There must have been some magic in that Old silk hat they found. For when they placed it on his head, He began to dance around. O, Frosty the snowman Was alive as he could be, And the children say he could laugh And play just the same as you and me. Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day, So he said, “Let’s run and we’ll have some fun now before I melt away. ” Down to the village, With a broomstick in his hand, Running here and there all around the square saying, “Catch me if you can!” He led them down the streets of town Right to the traffic cop. And he only paused a moment when He heard him holler “Stop!” For Frosty the snowman had to hurry on his way, But he waved goodbye saying, “Don’t you cry, I’ll be back again some day.” The Christmas Song Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose, Yuletide carols being sung by a choir, And folks dressed up like Eskimos. Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe, Help to make the season bright. Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow, Will find it hard to sleep tonight. They know that Santa’s on his way; He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh. And every mother’s child is going to spy, To see if reindeer really know how to fly. And so I’m offering this simple phrase, To kids from one to ninety-two, Although its been said many times, many ways, Merry Christmas to you! Here Comes Santa Claus Here comes Santa Claus, Here comes Santa Claus, Right down Santa Claus Lane, Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeer Pullin’ on the reins.
