Clinton’s
CHRISTMAS PARADE
Grand Marshal
Clinton Chamber Announces Ginny Carter will be the Grand Marshal for 2014 Christmas Parade
The Chamber of Commerce would like to announce that the Grand Marshal selected for this year’s Christmas parade will be Ginny
Carter. Her first nomination letter read: “I would proudly like to nominate Ginny Carter for Grand Marshal of the Christmas Parade. I
really believe she deserves this honor for all her selfless, ceaseless work with the youth of this county. I have been acquainted with
Ginny for many years and have always found her to be kind, helpful, and humble to a fault. Her greatest love is the kids she helps guide
through the complexities of growing up and becoming self-confident and happy individuals. She inspired these kids to overcome the
many different challenges they face in an already challenging world. The community is blessed to have someone with her devotion
helping our young adults. Her never ending energy level baffles and amazes me; she never stops. Hard work and a lot of love can move
mountains and she has moved many a mountain. Sincerely, Frannie Thompson”
A second nomination letter read, “I would like to add my nomination of Ginny Carter for the Grand Marshal of the Christmas Parade.
Ginny is deserving of this honor for many reasons, among those her service to the community and especially the youth of Clinton. She
has worked with high school students in the Clinton Youth Initiative Program for 14 years. In her capacity as supervisor, she not only
instructs students in proper completion of the many jobs they have to do, but also teaches by example working along beside them to get
the job accomplished. She instills a pride in completing a job as well as being sure it is a job well done. Teaching by example, Ginny
helps participants learn how to clean lockers, spread mulch and rock, or landscape an area. Bouts with poison ivy do not deter her work
or lessen her work ethic. Project Grad is another area in which she supports and protects our high school seniors. For many years she
has organized, encouraged, and supported this endeavor. The overnight project begins with procuring a safe environment for the
gathering. She also encourages as many seniors as she can reach to attend the function. A personal invitation and encouragement brings
more students who would possibly not attend due to shyness or not feeling a part of the group. Donations for food and beverages are
then collected as well as help for the evening. Finally, student volunteers help Ginny shop for the prizes to be awarded during the
evening. She makes sure each student leaves with a meaningful “prize”. Volunteering work with Habitat for Humanity is another project
near and dear to Ginny’s heart. She finds time to help the organization through her own work and that of Youth Initiative when the
students can be of service. This prefaces an opportunity for students to serve their community. In her regular jobs as bus driver and
cafeteria worker at the high school, Ginny interacts with many students during the day. She gets to know her bus riders and often has
an encouraging word to start their day. Cajoling students as they pass through the cafeteria line helps them feel important and supported.
Through this contact time, she is also aware of problems students may be having or needs they need fulfilled. She does her best to make
sure kids have the basics. Ginny has raised two sons who are a
credit to the community. She is there for her boys, their wives,

HAUNTED HOUSE

Clinton’s Terror on Washington Street
The Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau announced in August that the annual haunted house “Terror on Washington
Street” would reopen in October for the 2014 season. The annual event has been an outreach for community volunteer opportunity for
local clubs/organizations and high school students needing community service hours. The haunted house has brings thousands of visitors
to the city since 1995, and 2014 was no different! Over 5,000 willing visitors went through the haunted house, allowing the Chamber
to pay for the added expense of installation of
the sprinkler system to the building.
The Chamber would like to thank all those
who have worked long and hard to bring back
this event. We could not have accomplished
our goal of reopening the popular event
without the support of our community and our
volunteers. We look forward to continuing
this tradition for many years to come!

Restoration Association (DCRA) has a vision for this landmark
to once again regain its glory. Since 2004 the nonprofit
organization has been dedicated to seeing that the unique
buildings and sites that are the heritage of DeWitt County are

Festival of Trees
People area amazed at the beauty and originality of the more
than 50 decorated theme trees. Each year, businesses,
organizations, families, and individuals display their creative
talents with new ideas. some come from quite a distance to be
a part of this festival, such as Monticello, Mt. Zion,
Edwardsville, as well as Clinton.
This year, the dining room has a reindeer theme. In the past,
there have been sleds, Charlie Brown, a candy theme, angels,
and stockings, with a different theme every year. Refreshments
of cookies, homemade candies, punch, coffee and tea are served
in this room with seating at tables for visitors to enjoy visiting
with friends.
Upstairs, the display of vintage aluminum trees is a favorite
with miniature deer among the more than 30 shiny trees.
Beautiful table settings are in the middle of the ballroom,
surrounded by at least 20 decorated theme trees. Among these
trees is a 12 foot evergreen tree. The decorated balcony
overlooks this scene. Two other rooms on the handicapped
accessible second floor are filled with threes and holiday
decorations.
The large meeting room on the first floor has benches to rest
while enjoying the 20 plus decorated trees, wreaths, and
displays. Lights are dimmed each night from 7:00 until 8:00 for
twilight viewing.
There is no admission fee, nor is there a fee to display a tree,
wreath or table setting. This is a way for businesses to show
their wares and individuals to display a collection or express an
idea. The Kenney Heritage Association members, sponsor
of this event, hope many will come to enjoy this wonderful,
breathtaking activity.
Groups begin setting up on Sunday, November 16th and
continue through Wednesday, November 19th.
The three day Open House begins on Friday, November 21st
at 1:00pm until 8:00, all day Saturday from 10:00am until
8:00pm, and again on Sunday, noon until 5:00pm.

ELI KIMARO
Will Discuss Her Documentary A Lot Like You
November 12, 2014 at 11am
Shilling Auditorium | Richland Community College
A Lot Like You takes us on a personal journey into the most
vulnerable corners of a family history spanning generations
and continents. This layered documentary starts with a
familiar exploration of mixed-race identity as the narrator
searches for her roots, but brings the discussion to surprising
levels of personal and political self-awareness. Fresh and
inspired, tender and uncommonly smart, A Lot Like You
triumphs as an exemplary work of first-person documentary
for the 21st century.
Eliaichi Kimaro is a mixed-race, first-generation
American with a Tanzanian father and Korean
mother. When her retired father moves back
to Tanzania, Eliaichi begins a project that
evocatively examines the intricate fabric of
multiracial identity, and grapples with the
complex ties that children have to the cultures
of their parents.
