In this issue, readers have the opportunity to win a getaway to
Waitaki. There are many readers north of Waitaki, who have never
experienced the enchantment of Old Oamaru which has many
interesting relics of the past, with many shops open 7 days a week.
By reading through the Waitaki section, you will discover the answers to the
questions, and the details of what you can win on page 39. Simply send the
answers in to us, and all correct entries will go into a draw to win a great getaway in
Waitaki. The prize will be drawn under supervision on the 31st October and the winner
announced in the next issue of What to See and Do in the Central South Island.
Waitaki District: The Waitaki District extends from the Southern Alps in the West, from
Lake Ohau and Omarama down the impressive Waitaki Valley. It goes past beautiful
Hydro lakes and the Waitaki River in the north, then south along the expansive
North Otago coastline to Palmerston.
The area is known for its eco-tourism near Duntroon and the renowned Moeraki
boulders along the coastline. Oamaru itself is the heart of the area and a place where
you can enjoy historic relics of yesteryear and much more.
Oamaru’s Victorian Precinct
Oamaru’s
Victorian
Precinct,
bordering
the
harbour, has some of the loveliest 19th Century
architecture in New Zealand. The discovery of
an excellent building material, limestone, helped
to make the young town appear permanent and
stable.
The locally known ‘Oamaru stone’
was
plentiful
and
became
the
preferred
material for the early buildings, hence the name
“Whitestone City”. Due to the prosperity of the times,
banks, offices, hotels, grain and woolstores and
warehouses were soon being built.
Oamaru grew up from the goldrush days and
had a thriving seaport which handled imports and
exports to and from the district. Time stood still and the
original main street is alive and well today, the look of
yesteryear intriguing the passersby.

Due to the Port of Oamaru playing a vital role in the handling of imports and exports
to and from the district, it was the first to be developed. The shift of trade to Thames
Street, together with the closing of the Port of Oamaru in the 1970’s have been
beneficial for the town’s 19th Century heritage. In 1989, The Oamaru Whitestone
Civic Trust was created to preserve it.

The shop was built in 1867, and back then was a general merchant, shop and
wine cellar. Bacon and ham was also cured on the premises. It was owned and
operated by William Bee a prominent merchant who immigrated from England. This
versatile business man also baked all his own cakes and bread. Orders were then
sent to customers by post and rail.

Oamaru Steam & Rail
Oamaru Steam & Rail: The railway line is the
original line that used to service the sailing ships
since the 1860’s. All the carriages are restored
to their original condition. It is operating most
Sundays from 11am-4.00pm. The train driver can
sometimes show you penguins in the rail shed
where they choose to nest. The cost is $20.00 per
family to have a ride to the penguin colony.
Currently restoration is underway on a 1921 Fowler steam engine which was used
for shifting quarry stone to reclaim the harbour land. It used to be at the Oamaru
Public gardens in the playground for many years. A donation for the project is very
welcome, as it is all done by volunteer labour. For more information phone Harry on
027 277 4678. Look for them on Facebook too at www.facebook.com/OamaruSteam.
Whitestone Model Rail Group: The group was formed by model railway enthusiasts
around 1982. In recent years, they accumulated so many models that they acquired
the upstairs area of the textile building in the Precinct area at 13 Tyne Street. It is open
10am-3pm most Sundays. Admission is $2.00 or $5.00 per family.

development of New Zealand’s agricultural industry. Walk the history from water to
electric power and from millstone to roller milling. On operating days see, hear and

Herbert Forest
Herbert is situated 22kms south of Oamaru. It
is named after British Secretary of War, Sidney
Herbert. Herbert is an enchanting little village
situated in a sheltered location amongst hills.
Originally it was named Otepopo in Maori, a
name that was used by the local school (closed
September 2010) first opened in 1864 and the
stone church constructed in 1866.
On the outskirts of Herbert, there is a large forest plantation called Herbert Forest.
This is an ideal place for hunting and tramping alike. 5kms South of Herbert is a
farming settlement called Waianakarua. Waianakarua has New Zealand’s oldest
Stone Bridge still in use on a public highway. The Waianakarua River is also located
close to Herbert and offers some ideal sites for swimming and picnics.
Herbert Forest Camping Ground: Travel through Herbert, and 3km south, turn west
onto Breakneck Road. This basic, but beautiful camp is only 1km down the road. The
grounds are well groomed, and the many camp sites are amongst lovely stately trees.
It is easy to find your own secluded site. There are showers and toilets, washing
machine and a cosy kitchen/dining room with hotplates and fridge. All facilities are
clean and tidy and a rose garden has been planted in the front of them. Scattered
around the spacious grounds are also woodfired BBQ’s.
There is plenty to do here - in the peace and quiet. You can listen to the birds (there
is native bird life aplenty), kayak on the river, there is safe swimming for the children
or go on one of the many walking tracks. There is also a mountain bike track in the
Herbert Forest - access is available by Mt Misery Road.
Further down the road, you will find The Mill House which is the ideal spot to break
your long journey, or a great place to stay while you enjoy the many local attractions.
An iconic and well-known building, the Mill House is steeped in history and, whilst
recently renovated, still has many of the original features.
The Mill House is a lovely venue for a special occasion, or simply a getaway. Fully
catered and accommodation packages are available to suit your needs.
The Mill House restaurant is open to the public for dinner Friday and Saturday, and
lunch on Saturday and Sunday. We have a range of delicious seasonal dishes and a
friendly, relaxed dining atmosphere. Bookings for groups essential.

Things to do in Coastal Waitaki
A walk to the Moeraki Lighthouse located at the end of Lighthouse Road in
Moeraki is well worthwhile. Simply walk along the beach from the famous
boulders to the lighthouse which dates back to 1876 and is still in use.
You will also see fur seals, shags on the coastline and Yellow-eyed
penguins (Hoiho) at Katiki Beach. Ensure that you keep a safe
distance from the wildlife.
Enjoy a 30 minute beach walk to the Moeraki Boulders from the Hampden
township closeby.
Moeraki: This is a little fishing village just 45 minutes drive north of Dunedin and
20 minutes south of Oamaru. It was one of the earliest European Whaling station
settlements (1836) in New Zealand.
Moeraki is a wonderful place for relaxing, fishing, boating, walking and observing
wildlife (penguin and seal colonies). Gorgeous views of the Pacific ocean can also be
seen. Moeraki’s main attraction is the nearby Moeraki Boulders.

Open 7 Days Mon to Fri 7am - 5pm.
Sat and Sun 8am to 5pm
Cakes, homemade goodies, pies, coffee,

Moeraki Boulders: The Moeraki Boulders are a number
of large circular stones. They are spasmodically placed
along part of the Koekohe Beach near Moeraki. They
are protected in a scientific reserve and in modern
times, they have become a popular tourist attraction.
They are a ‘must see’ in Moeraki when passing through.
The boulders are grey in colour and have endured
shoreline erosion from black mudstone coastal cliffs that form a backdrop of the
beach. They were created in ancient sea floor sediments.
The Moeraki boulders weigh many tons and the largest of them are up to three metres
in diametre.
Moeraki Village Holiday Park is situated above the boat harbour in the picturesque
village of Moeraki, North Otago. It is only a 50-metre walk to the beach.
Kristina and Robbie Mitchell welcome you to their piece of paradise and will ensure
that your stay is a memorable one. This is an idyllic setting for adults and children
alike. We cater for a romantic getaway or a family holiday.
Kristina and Robbie also have clean tidy motel units available with everything laid on
for a relaxing holiday.

word “Kohurau” meaning many mists. Kurow’s history is both rich and intricately
linked to the majesty of the Waitaki and Hakataramea Valleys.
Glenmac Farmstay: Glenmac is a high country merino sheep and beef cattle farm
spread over 1583 hectares. Nestled in the quiet Waitaki Valley, the family farm is
60km’s from Oamaru and 15km’s from Kurow township. We are on the Alps to Ocean
Cycle trail, making us the ideal place for cyclists and other weary travellers to stay.
Your hosts Kaye and Keith welcome you and guarantee an enjoyable and relaxing
holiday experience for all visitors to their friendly high country farm accommodation.
Glenmac are able to provide information on local activities including horse treks,
tramping, mountain biking, Kurow Winery, fossil trail, hot tubs and much more to help
you plan a great holiday.
An affordable range of farm style accommodation is available to suit the budget and
requirements of independent travellers and families to our rural South Island destination.
From Oamaru, after passing Pasquale Winery, look for Western House Bed & Breakfast
on your left. John and Hazel offer warm, comfortable accommodation that is tailor
made to suit weary cyclists on the Alps 2 Ocean. Western House has always been a
stopover place to rest ever since 1861, but now, instead of stabling horses, they take
in weary cyclists and holiday makers.
Kurow Island Walk (1/2 hour): This is right between the town’s two bridges. A former
landfill site, it has been transformed into a park-like setting by the hard work of the
local enhancement group. It is a suitable walk for most fitness levels, and takes you
around the island.
Be sure to check out the new Kurow bridges. These were built to replace the 133 year
old Kurow twin bridges and the first of these was opened in April of this year, and the
second bridge was opened in July.
Kurow Hotel: This was built in 1864 for travellers heading through to Central Otago and
Mackenzie. It was a central point for the sheep and cattle sales held in the Haka Valley.

“WOW”………Omarama, not just ‘the place of light’
and definitely not just a ‘pee & pie’ stop! We have been
amazed at the diversity of what this small rural town has
to offer. We arrived from Geraldine in August 2013 to run
the Ahuriri Motels a new venture and way of life for us.
We had heard Omarama was a gliding ‘mecca’ but it was
not until I treated myself to this breath taking memorable
Pam and Brian of Ahuriri Motels
experience that I totally realised what all the noise was about, but listen if taking to the
air is not for you, no problems, this town offers plenty of other things to see and do,
challenging and adventurous or relaxing and recreational. You and your family are
catered for.
Here are a few of Omarama’s magic spots we want to share;
The nearby Clay Cliffs are a short car or bike ride away and
often get overlooked by many Kiwis visiting our area. They
are well worth the viewing. Created a mammoth 5 million
years ago by the Ostler Fault, what we see today is the
result of natural erosion. Never underestimate the
power of weather, rain, wind and the extreme Omarama
elements of snow and scorching heat have taken their toll
on this natural phenomenon, it is nothing short of incredible
you get the feeling you could be on another planet!

Ladybird Hill is a very worthwhile short trek, only a 30
minutes moderate climb and you are rewarded with
a comfortable seat while taking in the 180 degree
spectacular view.
Lindis Pass across to snow caped
Southern Alps and over to the Benmore Range all encompass the Omarama basin. All
trekkers need sustenance, so why not enjoy coffee or wine in the tranquil garden setting
of Ladybird Hill Café?
If a gentle stroll is your passion the Omarama River track is the place to head, perhaps
with your book to relax under a tree. Truly restful - totally idyllic.
Big news for bike enthusiasts; Omarama now has the A2O cycle trail going in ‘both’
directions. This trail is suited to all ages and levels of bikers. The Ohau to Omarama
A2O section we personally recommend, even though the 10km incline was a bit of a
struggle, it was compensated with stunning views of Lake Ohau, Lake Ruataniwha
and Twizel township. Once you reach the summit, you are treated to 32kms of down-hill
all the way into town. For a gentle ride head East on the cycle trail for an easy
10k ride. It brings you to Sailors cutting on the banks of Lake Benmore, fantastic
swimming and perhaps a picnic before the return journey.
Omarama even has
challenging mountain bike trails for the intrepid biker all tucked away in the nearby hills!
All biking levels are covered.
These are only some of the special places we have chosen to share with you but
please, this list is not exhaustive. At the Motel we enjoy seeing the transformation
of our visitors, hearing about their experiences and how the magic of this lovely town
affects them. We like to encourage our guests to take advantage of the multitude of
activities which are on offer; fishing, hunting, boating, biking, tramping, flying, gliding or
simply watch a sheep being shorn, go wine tasting, check out the quirky little antique
store stocked with many a tempting treasure. Along a little further is a clothing store
where any shopper is sure to find an ‘I want’ or ‘a must have’, and the perfect way to
finish off an action packed day is to soak in the little sanctuary at the Hot Tubs located
on the Main Highway, a well deserved treat! We look forward to welcoming you and
sharing the best of New Zealand towns - Omarama.

Palmerston / Dunback
Palmerston is 40 minutes from Oamaru and Dunedin. It is the gateway to Central Otago
via SH 85 (also known as the Pig Route). The area these days has many activities to offer
visitors including: fishing, golf, cycling, heritage trails, walking tracks and beach walks.
Thyme Lodge Bed & Breakfast is located in the peaceful and quiet rural outskirts
of beautiful Palmerston. Come and stay and get away from the hustle and bustle of
everyday life. Bring the family and enjoy the fantastic view
and tranquility that Thyme Lodge has to offer.
Accommodation is self contained, giving privacy. There is a
fantastic outlook with a lovely deck to sit on and enjoy the
view. Laundry facilities and free Wi-Fi are also available.
Lyn and Greg breed Llamas (Crias) and guests can interact with
them at feed time. They are all quiet and loveable. With stays
of two nights or more, Lyn is happy to arrange a complimentary
walk over the Taieri Peak Forest, or if you would like, a day walk
can be arranged with a picnic at a discounted price.
Palmerston is famous for its majestic hill called Puketapu which draws the eyes of
travellers. The name is Maori, and means sacred hill. A monument has been built at
the top to commemorate John McKenzie, the first MP to represent the area from 1882
until1900. He was an instigator for the passing of the Lands act and the Lands for
Settlement act by the Liberal government in the 1890s. He arrived in New Zealand in
1861, working as a shepherd and was knighted in 1901.
In recent years, the hill has featured a race to the top called “Kelly’s Canter” which is
held in Mid-October each year. Kelly was a local policeman during World War II who
used to climb the hill regularly, using it as a coastal lookout for enemy ships coming
into the Otago harbours.
Climbing Puketapu: If you would like to climb this 343 metre hill, allow an hour
to an hour and a half. Begin your walk at the Palmerston railway station. Walk up
Stronsa Street and go across the railway lines. Keep going up the hill on Stour St, then
continue via the stile into the paddocks below Puketapu. You are able to cross most of
the fences via stiles. Above the water reservoir, you may choose to circle to the right
around the slope of Puketapu. You will find yourself at the dray road built in 1920 to
carry rock for the cairn up Puketapu. It is a bit of a climb, but you will be well rewarded
by the stunning view at the top.
The Dunback Railway Line: TA Ghost Railway. (The Pigroot SHW 85)This line
ran as a Goods and Passenger Service from August 1885 until it was closed in 1989.
As you travel up towards Dunback township, there are many relics of the line still
visible. The Station Masters House is the house beside the Dunback Sign as you
enter the township. The Station was behind this, with a goods storage shed and with
the Turntable being behind the Hotel.
The Pigroot - SHW 85: This road was the main way to Central Otago and the gold
fields from 1864. At the time, Cobb & Co coaches required another way to get to the
Dunstan gold fields as the Dunstan Road had become in passable at times. The trip
on average took 5 days from Dunedin to Clyde.
The Dunback Inn: The current stone building was built in 1879, replacing a wooden
building that was erected in 1864. It was originally called the Junction Hotel, as it was
at the junction of the roads. It was a stopover hotel on your 5 day trip to the gold fields.
The next hotel was at Pigroot creek, which is 34 Km further up the Pig root.

Twizel
This charming
town was originally built to
service the Upper Waitaki Hydroelectricity Scheme
in 1968. The project was completed in 1983. At
the height of the scheme, there were around
6,000 residents. At the Twizel Events Centre,
there is a display with information on this, which is
interesting to view.
DUNCAN
Plumbing &
Drainage Ltd
Twizel was designed to be a temporary town and
revert back to farmland at the completion of the project, but residents passionately fought
to save their town and so it survives today.
Twizel is right in the heart of the Mackenzie great lakes area and attractions of the Aoraki
Mount Cook Mackenzie region. There are several massive lakes nearby, their immense size
almost like inland seas. The biggest lakes are Ohau, Benmore, Aviemore, Tekapo and Pukaki.
Add to that a myriad of smaller lakes such as Middleton, Alexandrina, Poaka, and McGregor.
Twizel has gone from strength to strength and due to being surrounded by lakes, rivers,
mountains, forests and ski fields it is a popular area for kiwis and tourists alike. Twizel is
your ideal location for fun on water with fishing, boating, swimming and kayaking. Great lakes,
great coffee and great skiing are just a few of the great things you’ll find in Twizel. Visitors
will appreciate the unique charm of this great little town.
There is a good shopping mall at Twizel too. One of the best places to dine in is the
Razza Bar & Cafe. It specialises in Thai Cooking, or Kiwi Fish n Chips.
The Razza Bar & Cafe:
Lek is the wife of Mike
Darling owner/operator of the Razza Bistro & Bar Twizel. Lek
graced our shores in 2004. She had approximately 5 years
cooking Thai food, both at Ashburton and nearby Methven.
After the September 2009 earthquake, Lek shifted to Twizel.
She worked in the Thai Restaurant initially, situated in the
Market Square, followed by The Razza.
She has certainly established a fine reputation for Thai food
both for the locals and our many visitors. Why not come to
the Razza Bistro & Bar and enjoy Lek’s cooking and delightful
personality?

Twizel - A local’s perspective: Sally has been in Twizel off and on since 2001
and is now in her golden years. She loves the mountains and admiring the scenery
and wonderful patterns of sunset that Twizel has to offer. In her prime, Sally loved
climbing and canoeing and Twizel definitely ‘ticked all the boxes’.
She has found Twizel to be a very caring Christian community with a good cross
section of age groups due to retired people being loathe to leave the area. The town
is very family friendly too.
Sally enjoys painting, knitting, indoor bowls, and exercise classes. She used to help
at The Musterer’s Hutt, but has had to leave due to health issues.
The Musterers Hut is a family-friendly cafe in Twizel, New Zealand. We specialise
in fresh homemade fare, excellent coffee, and relaxed high-country kiwi hospitality.
Enjoy your meal in retro-style decor, while the kids work off energy outside in the free
playground. Take your time and browse the boutique gift shop, or try a round on the
mini golf course.
We are close to highway 8 for travellers between Christchurch, Lake Tekapo and
Queenstown, with free parking at the front door.
Musterers Hut is thrilled to be an official partner of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycleway, and is
the first Twizel Cafe you get to on entering Twizel, with bike racks right outside the door.
High Country Salmon is close to Twizel and one of the
biggest tourist attractions. High Country Salmon has a large

After leaving Fairlie, you will come to
the historic town of Kimbell. It was
originally called Silverstream due
to being where three springs flow
and join to form a creek of the same
name. The name was changed
to Kimbell to differentiate it from
Silverstream in Otago.
Visitors will appreciate the lovely avenue of trees and the beautiful, picturesque
surroundings. Be sure to stop and visit the Silverstream Gallery owned by artist Lloyd
Harwood. Here you can purchase artwork of local artists who have been inspired by
the awesome scenes surrounding them, including Randall Froude, Nick Froude and
Stefani Vincent. There is plenty of parking and picnic tables available outside to take in the
wonderful views.
Down the road are some tame animals to visit who invite families to come and feed them
at The Kimbell Garage Fine Art Gallery: Here there are New Zealand landscape
paintings and contemporary abstracts, featuring resident artist Caley Hall and local
Canterbury artists Nathanael Provis and Chris Dawson Taylor. Kids can visit Jackson

Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo sits in the centre of the South
Island. It is the gateway to the Mackenzie Country,
Aoraki Mt Cook and the Southern Lakes. It is only three
hours drive from Christchurch and Queenstown and
one of the most lovely places in New Zealand.
The Mackenzie Basin is boarded by the majestic Southern Alps.
Lake Tekapo and Pukaki are unique for their aqua colour (caused by the
fine glacial flour suspended in the water). With vast horizons, one can
appreciate the stunning night skies, and as the sun sets, the changing
hues across the basin will capture your hearts.
Lake Tekapo is also home to one of the world’s largest international
Starlight Reserves - known as the ‘Aoraki-Mackenzie Starlight Reserve’.
It’s Gold status puts it as one of only four in the world with this classification,
meaning it has the darkest night skies known to man.
Mt John Observatory is the astronomical research facility of Canterbury Universities
Physic’s Dept. With research telescopes scanning up to 50 million stars on clear
nights. It remains one of only a handful of scientific facilities open to public (via Earth
& Sky Tours) in the world.
Be sure to call into Astro Cafe while you are there. It is situated at the summit of Mt
John. Enjoy delicious food, and coffee along with panoramic views of the Mackenzie
district. See their colour advertisement on the previous page.
Tekapo Springs - Something for everyone. Open 10am - 9pm daily.

Timaru is the main centre of the South Canterbury area
and is centrally located. It makes a convenient place to
stay, being only two hour’s drive south of Christchurch and
under two and a half hour’s drive north of Dunedin.
Caroline Bay is Timaru’s main attraction, drawing many visitors to
its safe swimming beach and popular annual carnival, It is a lovely
recreational area that is close to Timaru’s city centre, just to the north of
the substantial port facilities.
Caroline Bay ranked fourth place in the Automobile Association’s list of
over 200 of New Zealand’s most popular beaches this year with over
35,000 people voting. It was deemed the best beach in the South Island.
Caroline Bay began with the Weller Brothers in 1839 who set up a
Whaling station nearby. Caroline Bay’s
name itself was from the name of the
ship that called in for the whale oil.
The Bay Hill and Piazza offer stunning
views of the distant Southern Alps
and Caroline Bay. An interesting
walk heads north past the Benvenue
Cliffs to the Dashing Rocks. A bright,
vibrant social scene is provided by
the restaurants and cafés that link the beach to the main shopping area.
One of which is Monteith’s Bay 54. It is a great place to unwind, dine and celebrate.
You will also appreciate the modern decor and friendly service. Both indoor and
outdoor dining are available.

Caroline bay has a lot to offer to offer, having a maze, mini-golf,
children’s paddling pool, skate park and rink and a playground. There
is also a great Bird Aviary which is next to the viaduct entrance where
you will see exotic and unusual birds
which are normally found in picture
books. It is entertaining to interact
with the Cockatoos and the other
Australian species. The fish pond
also adds interest. The geodesic
dome allows visitors to see the birds
flying overhead and often partridges
running along the path. It is believed to be the only one of its kind in
New Zealand.
Sam & Kerrie hosts of the Panorama Motor Lodge, are full of local
knowledge about the area and happy to advise you about places of interest.

Chickens, donkeys, kune kune pigs, dog and even a turtle provide plenty of

Le Cren Street Takeaways: Luis Wood purchased Le Cren Street Takeaways in
February of this year. A “mad keen” fisherman, he had wanted to be self employed,
and a fish and chip shop seemed idealy suited.
Le Cren Street Takeaways prides itself on offering good quality, reasonably prized
tasty fish and chips . The fresh fish is of good size, rather than being mostly batter like
some. Fish and chips is still the best value takeaway for a family, so be sure to come
and try the delicious range on offer where the fish is cooked by a fisherman!

Springtime in the Botanic Gardens

Spring is a wonderful time to visit the
Botanic Gardens. It is when the plants
arise from their winter rest period and many
produce lush growth and colourful flowers.
As the days grow longer and begin to get
warmer, it is invigorating to experience
nature at work. As well as the blooming
plants, you will see birdlife in the aviary, on
the ponds and in the trees. Listen to their
various calls and songs.
For a great family day out, take a picnic lunch and feed the crusts to the ducks, or use the
free barbecue on the south drive. Children will enjoy the playground and nearby aviary.
You will see daffodils, rhododendrons, azaleas, flowering apples and many more flowering
plants. They are a great inspiration for your own garden.
Garden Tip: Mulch is great to conserve water and keep weeds down. Natural mulch also
improves the soil.

Cycleways / Walkways
There are several biking and walking tracks in Timaru, one of which is:
Otipua Wetlands - Timaru south (1 hour)
Start at the bridge over Saltwater Creek on King Street/Main South Road. Alternatively,
park in Rothwell Street by the Timaru rowing club and start from there. Follow the
track along the left side of Salt Water Creek to the wooden bridge.
Cross over the bridge and follow the track to the right. Pass the railway bridge where
the lagoon drains into the sea, enter the wetlands and follow the track around the lake.
The track is well formed and gravelled with a few gentle rises. It follows the south side
of the lake. A small wooden bridge crosses a creek and the track continues across
swamp land back to the south side of the river. Follow the track towards the road and
cross over the bridge on the Main South Road to get back to your starting point.
The following birds can be seen at the Otipua Wetlands from time to time: Pukekos,
Scaup (a small dark native diving duck), Pied Stilts, Swans, Paradise Ducks,
Mallard Ducks, Black Billed gulls, Cormorants, White Faced Herons and occasionally
White Herons and Royal Spoonbills. Not far from this lovely walk is Glenmark
Holiday Park: This is a quiet and relaxed holiday park, set in a lovely rural setting. It

arranged on request at the camping ground.

Art Galleries in Timaru
There are some great places in Timaru for those who love art. Particularly the
Aigantighe Art Gallery which is the home of art in South Canterbury, with a rich

A continually changing display of works from the gallery’s permanent collection is
shown in the original Edwardian house. The modern wing holds exhibitions of local
artists along with travelling shows from around the country.
Aigantighe Art Gallery’s park-like grounds are always open to the public, showcasing
a wide variety of permanent sculptures set amongst established trees and gardens.

the year. Exhibitions change every 4-6 weeks. Artists include: Marilynn Webb, AA Deans,

as the whole family can also enjoy the walking and biking tracks that the area offers.
This includes Pioneer Park, here there are several native forest and bush walks. The
church at Cave is also well worth a visit, it is unique in that it was built without nails.
Maori Rock Art: One of the most popular attractions in the Pleasant Point area, is the
rock art just up the road from Centre Hill Cottage. It features one of the most famous
figures in New Zealand - the “Opihi Taniwha”. This image featured on a two shilling
stamp in 1960. The rock art is in a small shelter near the Opihi River. For further
information on Maori rock art in this area and beyond, contact Te Ana Maori Rock Art
on 687 7372 or visit their website www.teana.co.nz.

Another highlight in Pleasant Point is the museum and railway.
Pleasant Point Museum & Railway: This wonderful
attraction features steam locomotives in complete
working order, along with the world’s only Model T Ford
Railcar. You can also see wonderful displays of railway
memorabilia. There is a vintage movie theatre that
shows old time films and cartoon favourites, together
with a vintage printery with some machines being over
100 years old. Children and adults alike will enjoy
seeing the model train display and restored rolling stock. The train itself travels down
2kms of track to a huge shed and Museum at Keanes Crossing.

Waimate District
Waimate is an approximately 37 minute drive south of
Timaru - a distance of about 45km and a similar distance from
Oamaru if you are travelling north. This charming little town is set
amongst the bottom of the Hunter Hills. You will love the relaxing
atmosphere and friendly locals in this great example of a New
Zealand rural town.
As you arrive into Waimate from Timaru Road, you will see the beautiful 1909
St Patrick Basilica on your left. Waimate features a wide, spacious main street, fine
examples of Edwardian architecture and lovely parks and gardens. Up on the hill,
clearly visible, there is also a tribute to the Clydesdale horse in Waimate called the
White Horse Monument which can be visited. It is there to recognise the faithful
service and effort given by horses in order to develop the fertile farmland in the area.
N-Lee Downs Equestrian Centre: Lynley Stockdale is the owner of a full size in-door
arena and a 70m-70m out-door jumps arena which is available for hire. She started
taking an interest in dressage in particular 10 years ago with her horse Mystaussman
who was a Thoroughbred/Clydesdale cross. He was a complete beginner. Lynley
then went on to purchase a trained Pre St George horse, and then Komplete Kaos.
Komplete Kaos has gone on to be an extremely successful dressage horse. Last
year, he won the South Island Championships, won the Nationals and also took out
the National New Zealand Title.
Lynley organises clinics, and hosts dressage instructor Andrea Raves once a month,
but also takes private lessons one on one at their level. The arena is also available
for hire for any riding discipline, or on the ground training of young horses. The arena
is on Adams Road in Waimate.
Hook Bush Lavender: Russell and Catherine began the lavender farm from
scratch over 20 years ago, when they were part of a Christian organisation called the
Barnabas Christian Trust. This trust provided an education programme for children
to learn practical skills, of which growing lavender was a big part.
Initially it was the fragrance that developed Russell and Catherine’s love for lavender,
however, the health benefits were also a factor. The business ‘grew like Topsy’. As
a result, an export market developed in addition to a retail giftware shop. They have
even had requests to supply lavender flowers for weddings.
Russell and Catherine can be seen with a stall at most local events, and visitors are
welcome to the farm by prior arrangement. People can purchase lavender at wholesale
prices from the home shop, or Country Crafts at Makikihi.
Russell and Catherine propagate, grow and distil the lavender into oil which is used
for adding to various other products such as lovely lavender soap. Lavender is
popular due to its antiseptic and relaxation qualities. Look for the Hook Bush
Lavender label, “It’s the real deal”. Don’t settle for imitations.

An interview with Paddy O’Reilly a Temuka local.
Paddy was born in Geraldine and went to school in
Temuka. Paddy can remember the current O’Reilly’s
Foodcentre being built around 1958. At the time, it
was the first supermarket in the district.
Paddy drove trucks for most of his working life, and
felt like a change. Paddy had a love for people and
thought that running the store would be an ideal
occupation, so he approached the existing owner of
the shop to see if he could purchase it. The owner
agreed, as he was ready to retire.
O’Reilly’s Foodcentre has good staff, which gives you a feeling of family says Paddy.
The interaction with the neighbourhood children also keeps life interesting.
Temuka has got great facilities with a golf course, swimming pool and camping
ground. The shop was conveniently located just across the railway line, so it was
disappointing for everyone when the access was blocked last year. However, it has
not made much difference in the number of repeat customers.

Kings Shoe Shop: This lovely store has been part
of Temuka for a long time. Owner Annie Hartnett
bought the shop in 2012 after working there for six
years. She always loved shoes, and the opportunity
arose to purchase the shop.
Kings Shoe Shop are stockists of popular brands
that are both comfortable and stylish. The staff
at the store are all terrific to work with and very helpful to customers. Temuka is
a small, friendly town, and the shop is well supported by local loyal customers.
Visitors will also be impressed by the quality and variety of shoes and accessories in
this shop, situated conveniently in the heart of the Main Street.
The Drapery: Located on the site of the first store and post office in Temuka at 88
King Street, this is one of the oldest stores in Temuka. It was originally established in
1863, but was destroyed by fire in 1894. Tenders were then called for 3 new shops in
1901, which were built and opened in 1902. The store has had a varied career from
the time it was built. It has been a depot for trucks, a second hand store, furniture
shop and in 1986, it became known as The Drapery.
Today, it is owned by Pam and Joe Laney who purchased it in 1999. Though it is still
called The Drapery, the shop has diversified to specialise in mens and ladies clothing
accessories together with a limited assortment of haberdashery. The store is also a
Timaru Dry Cleaning Agency. Be sure to call in to this historical store, when you are
in Temuka.

The shop has grown so much that there is now a
team of six required in order to run it efficiently. These are animal lovers, Debbie,
Phil, Tuku, Beth, Rose and Irene. They spend their days filling the shop with the
myriad of weird and wonderful items that are donated by their customers.
The team is so grateful for all the support they have received. This help has really
made a difference to the local SPCA and all those animals that rely on them. So
far the store has raised over $70,000. This has gone towards food and veterinary
expenses for animals awaiting rehoming, the building of new kennels for homeless
and unwanted dogs, the training of volunteers and staff members to assist with the
prevention of cruelty to animals and alleviate the suffering of animals, dealing with
animal-related concerns and education of school children and the public.

Springtime in the Domain
Alongside West Street (SH 1) and Walnut Ave is the Ashburton Domain. It is often
referred to as the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of Ashburton and very much a community
asset. Over the years, since the inception of the Domain, a number of
community service organisations and groups have helped with its development. This
37.54 hectare park is a significant open space area within walking distance from the
commercial area of Ashburton. It caters for a large number of different groups, with 16
hectares in lawns, trees and gardens with the remaining 21 hectares used for active
recreational sport.
It is known for its many established trees and in many
cases some of the finest specimens you will see
anywhere. To complement these large trees are
collections of maples, magnolias, conifers, deciduous
azaleas, rhododendrons, lilacs and roses also with a
variety of colourful annual flower beds.
The Domain has a comprehensive playground and a paddling pool, two barbeque
areas and plenty of picnic spots.
The Ashburton Domain is at its most colourful time during spring and summer/
autumn, with many people taking advantages of this for their wedding photos or family
portraits. In short there is something for everyone.
Farmers Market

Rakaia
Rakaia is located 28 kilometres north of Ashburton. Upon your arrival, you will notice
an iconic salmon sculpture taking pride of place as a monument to the salmon fishing
that is very popular in the summer at the Rakaia River.
The park surrounding the statue makes a lovely place for a picnic and to find information
on local history. Look out for the large mural on the ATS Building - A look back in time.
Rakaia today is home to over 1000 people and is a great place to visit and stay. There
are 10 exciting shops and you will quickly notice the ‘small town friendliness’.
The town has the longest bridge in New Zealand being 1.7 kilometres long. As you
approach the bridge from the south, there is a lovely walkway / cycleway that goes
parallel to the river.
Railway Tavern Rakaia: This historic green pub on the alp’s side of the Railway Line,
was built in 1873 and is now under new ownership. Helena and Craig purchased the
Rakaia Railway Tavern in March along with their three children Tayla, Josh and Cody.
Helena particularly likes Rakaia as it is a safe place to bring up kids, and there is
plenty to amuse them. Rakaia has its own swimming pool, sports domain, park with a
playground. There is also a very strong pony club and a wonderful school. Kids are
too busy with their outdoor activities to have much time for play stations!

As you travel north along the scenic route from Geraldine, Mayfield is the first town
you come to. It is a little farming settlement located 35 km from Ashburton. Take time
to relax and enjoy the beautiful landscape.
Overflow: Jan Howden opened the doors of Overflow about 18 years ago, and has
always lived in the district. As a child, her grandmother told her about the pioneer days,
and family stories which captured her imagination. From there, she took an interest in
treasures of the past.
Jan’s mother in law had an abundance of clothing, so Jan started to collect lace and
buttons to make repairs, until she had thousands of buttons, and on top of that, collected
postcards and second hand goods.
Her Dad loved machinery and horse power, and subsequently, Jan also became
knowledgeable about harness, machinery parts that related to everyday life, so outside
in the yard beside, you will find the ‘man’s section’.
Although Jan does not put price tags on any of her
stock, she can name her price instantly, and being
open erratic hours is part of Overflow’s charm.
Overflow attracts visitors from all over the
world, and meeting them gives Jan as
much pleasure as selling her stock. It is the
type of shop where people stop and talk to
each other while they enjoy looking at the vast array of fascinating merchandise on offer.
They are open Wednesday: 10:30 am - 5:30 pm. Friday- Sunday: 10:30 am - 5:30 pm.
Phone 03-303 6072.
When in Mayfield, Udder Dairy & Gifts is an ideal place for a stopover to enjoy
a relaxing coffee or meal. The attractively laid out shop is also full of interesting
giftware ranging from children’s toys through to collector’s items. If you are
looking for a unique present for someone special or souvenir to remember your time in
Mayfield, you will not be disappointed.
