Jeff s the new millennium dawned, Pope St. John Paul II noted how the Church was entering into a “new springtime,” a time in which many spiritual gifts would be renewed and strengthened among the faithful for the work of beginning a “New Evangelization” in the world. Both Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis have preached about the New Evangelization and have called upon Catholics to find new ways to announce the Gospel in an increasingly secular world. This New Evangelization, however, must begin within the Church before her members can be ready to evangelize others. To that end, I am excited to announce that Holy Trinity has purchased access to a dynamic faith formation program called Symbolon, which will help our parish form adults in the faith of the Catholic Church and can be used wherever one has access to the Internet. ymbolon aims at transforming adults on all levels—how we think, how we pray, and how we live—by immersing us in instruction about the Word of God and the Catholic faith. This program consists primarily of a series of 20 beautifully produced, engaging videos which take one through the entire story of the Catholic faith: Sacred Scripture, Salvation History, Jesus, the Church, Mary & the Saints, the Sacraments, Catholic Morality, God’s Plan for Human Sexuality, Catholic Social Teaching, and many others. Each video is approximately 30 minutes long, making it ideal for people who want to grow in their faith but who do not have lots of time to spare. As a member of our parish, beginning the First Sunday of Advent, November 30th, you will have access to Symbolon and its entire video library anytime on the web, using your computer, smartphone, or tablet. More information will be coming to you through the bulletin and through pulpit announcements over the course of the next few weeks. I know Symbolon will be an invaluable resource for our parish in bringing adults into a deeper communion with Jesus Christ and his Church, and I look forward to helping you navigate this new tool as we form disciples for the New Evangelization. t is extremely important that we as Catholics not only know our Catholic faith, but also bear witness to Christ in our daily lives. I strongly encourage every parishioner to take advantage of this excellent resource and make it a priority to learn more about our faith in order to live it out more deeply and to share it with others. Symbolon works great for individual study, for small groups (e.g., Bible study groups, men’s & women’s prayer groups, RCIA, etc.), and especially for families right at home. For those without access to a computer or the Internet, I hope that small groups will start getting together—either in people’s homes or by reserving the parish Meeting Room—so that everyone will be able to share in this great experience. How exciting it is to think that all of us will be learning about and growing in our faith together with Symbolon as we seek to transform the world— starting right here in Hartington—for Christ and His Church! Projects supported by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) move beyond providing for immediate needs. They work to build healthy, sustainable futures for communities. Ten years ago, Boston’s Haley House began offering bakery training at the request of a few regular guests at the soup kitchen. Due to high demand, Haley House expanded the training into a six-month course that includes customer relations and basic business principles. Haley House currently has 70 trainees who have completed the program and are now employed in the Boston area. Haley House also offers cooking classes for at-risk teens and holistic, individual support to men and women reentering the community after incarceration. Like Haley House, Faith Works recognizes the value of human relationships in the fight against poverty. Operating in the Roanoke Valley, Faith Works builds community through conversation. After listening to residents and members of parishes and congregations in the city’s Southeast area, the group worked to get the area recognized as “medically underserved,” and thereby secured $6 million for a new health clinic. This change will make a dramatic difference in the lives of residents, 80 percent of whom are uninsured. The dialogue fostered by Faith Works also bridges racial divides. One member commented that “nowhere else would we probably have talked to each other, but here we are now working together, gardening [in community gardens] together.” Members are working to train leaders in the Hispanic community and to listen to their concerns. Haley House and Faith Works create a strong local economy by building human relationships and carry on Christ’s mission “to bring glad tidings to the poor . . . liberty to captives . . . sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free” (Lk 4:18). The Catholic Campaign for Human Development funds programs like these in communities across the United States and helps people living in poverty join together, identify problems and find ways to improve their lives and neighborhoods. CCHD is the official domestic anti-poverty agency of the Catholic bishops in the United States. Your support helps to end poverty one community at a time. Working together, we can reach out and touch the lives of those living on the margins of society. Please visit www.povertyusa.org to read more details of CCHD’s efforts to spread Christ’s love by helping to break the cycle of poverty in your community and across the country. 402004-14 Origins 2012–2013 Grants CCHD was founded in 1970 by the Catholic bishops of the United States as their domestic anti-poverty program. They realized that outreach through established charitable services was not creating the changes people needed in order to get themselves out of poverty. With this goal in mind, the bishops worked to address the underlying policies and systems that perpetuate poverty, as a complement to direct service. Community Economic De Technical As Total: $9,299 Impact CCHD brings Catholic social teaching to life. It funds community and economic development programs across the United States that help poor and marginalized people join together to make decisions, seek solutions to local problems, and find ways to improve their lives and neighborhoods. Economic development initiatives help create new businesses and jobs. CCHD also provides educational opportunities for Catholics to learn about poverty, stand in solidarity with those affected by it, and reflect on their own responsibility before the great need of others. Involvement You can make a difference: 1. Donate. Your generous support, in the parish collection and throughout the year, is vital to CCHD’s anti-poverty mission and creates real change. 2. Learn. Take advantage of CCHD awareness programs to learn more about poverty, those affected by it, and our responsibilities as members of the Church. Visit www.povertyusa.org. 3. Pray for those who receive CCHD support and for all our brothers and sisters struggling with poverty. Community Development: 178 Economic Development/Job Creation: 36 Technical Assistance: 10 Total: $9,299,250 CCHD is committed to accountability and transparency. We allocate funds to community projects that promote the mission and vision of CCHD while adhering to the moral and social teachings of the Catholic Church. Please visit www.usccb.org/cchd to view funding criteria ✙ Continental/Multinational and see a detailed list of our most recent grants. CCHD’s primary source of support is a once-ayear collection held in parishes across the United States. Our Holy Trinity Parish will be serving a meal at the Yankton Banquet on Tues. Dec. 16th . Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. The Yankton Area Banquet began in 1997 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Yankton. This church remodeled its basement in order to provide a facility to enable this wonderful program to exist. Every Thursday night and every other Tuesday night, a meal is provided for anyone who may be lonely or is in need of good nutritious food for their family served with welcoming smiles & loving preparation. Each night that the Banquet is open, a group or business provides the meal and the workers to accomplish this event. This year marks the 10th year that Holy Trinity Parish has been providing a meal right before Christmas. Each year the senior students of our parish and 10-12 adult volunteers are invited to help serve this meal. It is a service that is rewarded by people’s smiles, greetings, and eager questions such as “What do we have to eat tonight?” and “Do you know it’s my birthday?” It is a service that is rewarded by little and big children and even adults glowing with excitement when they get a new coat or hat or mittens after they eat their supper! It is a night when your heart is filled with reward when you sit with a lonely couple who is delighted to share this “Christmas meal” with you because their children and grandchildren won’t be home for Christmas. Everyone has a story that will touch your heart Directors and leaders of the Banquet can only approximate the number of lives (including former members of our own parish and community) who have been helped and touched over the life of the Banquet. Calculations indicate that approximately 20,800 people from more than 21 communities have come to serve 202,800 meals in 14 years of the Banquet. If you want to experience a great evening of hospitality as you welcome the stranger and share a meal please join us as a helper at the Banquet or share your prayers and treasures to provide the meal.
