Above & Beyond Award – Youth
Alex Sheck is young man from Buffalo Grove who, with the help
of his father, started Experience the Game, a nonprofit agency that
provides tickets to professional sporting events to underprivileged
children of all ages. Not only do the children receive tickets to the
events, but they also get the opportunity to meet professional
athletes. Alex began this as a project, funding it with his own money
that he has saved. He has also received donations from friends and
family and has formed relationships and partnerships with various
professional athletes, sports franchises and some large businesses.
In just a year, he has made a huge impact on over 175 kids and
hosted 20 events across the country.
Business Philanthropy Award – Buffalo Grove
Peter Panayioutou of Continental Restaurant treats all his
customers and employees like family. Over the years, he has
continually served and supported the community by hosting
fundraisers and providing donations for community and fundraising
events. He supports many organizations and causes in the
community…large or small.
Business Philanthropy Award – Lincolnshire
fourteen 500 lb. fiberglass
apples manufactured, decorated,
delivered and installed in
Lincolnshire’s public spaces. Amy
is Director of the school and Lynn
is the former Board President
of the school. Both women are
educators.
Teach & Inspire Award
Gregory Sherwin is the AP
Human Geography teacher at
Stevenson High School. Mr. Sherwin is a favorite among his students
for his ability to make them eager to learn and he opens students’
minds to gain a global perspective – “the why of where.” He makes
class interesting and fun for the students. Mr. Sherwin teaches
his students and inspires them to think outside the community. He
empowers his students and inspires them to aspire to help others
not just here but globally.
Together We Can
Chunowitz Teitelbaum & Mandel, Ltd. is a professional
accounting firm located in Lincolnshire. Both partners and staff are
heavily involved in volunteering, donating and supporting a wide
variety of charitable programs…most of which help children and
families. They have supported Ronald MacDonald House Charities,
the World Charity Cup (children competing in a global video game
to raise funds for charities), Feed My Starving Children (packing
formulated meals for undernourished children), the Lurie Children’s
Meals from the Heart program and a wide variety of other programs.
The Buffalo Grove Farmer’s Market, which was started five years
ago, is run by a small committee of residents chaired by Paulette
Greenberg. Not only is the Farmers Market one of the largest on
Sunday, it was voted the #1 Farmers Market in 2013. There are a
variety of booths featuring fruits, vegetables, meats, snack items,
homemade breads and pastries, dog treats and food trucks that
serve breakfast and specialty coffees. But that’s not all. Each week
there are community organizations selling items or holding special
events. Some weeks there are entertainers, artists and even a knife
sharpening booth. It’s the place to meet on Sunday mornings from
June through mid-October.
Community Volunteer Award – Buffalo Grove
The Chamber would like to congratulate all of the 2014 Heart of the
Community Award nominees —
Rick Rosen is President of the Northwest Suburban Interfaith
Council, an organization formed to foster understanding among those
of different faiths, to encourage cooperative social service efforts
and serve as an ethical and moral voice promoting the positive
growth and unity of the community. Rick was instrumental in creating
the first annual Help Feed our Community’s Hungry 5K Walk and
Family Event. Over 100 participants walked from Saint Mary Parish
to Hope Lutheran Church and back. The walk helped stock the food
pantries at Saint Mary Parish, Kingswood United Methodist Church
and Congregation Beth Am. Rick continues to seek ways to stock
the pantries and find staff for the pantries at local congregations. He
also oversees the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration. Rick has
been a School Board Member of District 21 and has spear-headed
the collection of school supplies and backpacks for needy families.
Community Volunteer Award – Lincolnshire
Amy Morrissey and Lynn Driscoll were co-chairs of Lincolnshire’s
Apples Around Town Public Arts display which celebrated the 40year anniversary of the Lincolnshire Community Nursery School.
These two women planned and coordinated the project including
finding sponsors and artists and working with the Village and the
Village’s Public Works Department to coordinate the task of getting
