Distracted driving
Voice-control devices tested for safety
A study conducted in 2013
at the University of Utah, and
sponsored by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, began to
chip away at a common theory
that hands-free meant relatively
distraction-free.
Now, after a second comprehensive study this year, a
growing body of research is
showing that assumption might
be creating a false sense of
security for drivers. In the most
significant attempt to date to
assess distractions caused by
voice-controlled communica-
tion and navigation features
in cars, test subjects showed
measurable declines in their
ability to drive safely while
using such systems. A few even
crashed while being tested in a
simulator.
AAA is sharing the findings
of this research with the auto
industry and government
agencies such as the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
To learn more about the latest study and its results, see the
story on page 20.

This year, which marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France, many veterans and their loved ones spent time
revisiting a site that they will never forget.
Two AAA members from Rhode Island were among those who
went back “over there.” They shared their plans to return with
AAA Horizons New Haven earlier this year.
We spoke with them again after their journeys to hear their
impressions of the area. To learn more about them and their
travels, see the story on page 8.
While much of a visit to the Normandy area is historical and
heart-tugging, it can be combined with scenes of exceptional
beauty, with ancient hilltop abbeys, fishing villages and vistas
that inspired Claude Monet. See the story, page 9.

Take precautions to avoid
the risk of drowsy driving
Some drivers can barely keep their eyes open. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety notes that more than a third of drivers report
having fallen asleep behind the wheel at some point in their lives,
and more than one in 10 has fallen asleep behind the wheel in the
past year.
A Foundation study points to the serious impact of drowsy
driving. Drowsy drivers are involved in more than 12 percent of
fatal crashes. In most cases, drivers move out of their lanes or drift
across a road when dozing, and drivers themselves are often the
victims, dying in single-vehicle crashes.
Attention is paid (and rightfully so) to drunken and distracted
driving, but drowsy driving continues to gain awareness within the
traffic safety community. For drowsy drivers, sleepiness slows your
reaction time, decreases awareness and impairs judgment, just like
drugs or alcohol.
Drivers who doze off at the wheel may also be victims of misconceptions, such as believing that caffeine is enough to wake someone
up (false). Perhaps the most dangerous misconception, however,
is that people believe they can tell that they are about to fall asleep.
The AAA Foundation study showed that fully one-half of drivers
who fell asleep and crashed said they only felt somewhat or not at
all sleepy. That first time your head nods may very well be the first
time you end up off the road.
We are heading into November, not far from the busy holiday
season. We’ll hear the factoid about some ingredient in turkey causing drowsiness, and people will chuckle. The fact is, however, that
millions of Americans will travel more than 50 miles from home
to spend time with friends and families, and large numbers will be
challenged by making long drives while drowsy. Here are some tips:
• Get plenty of sleep (at least six hours) the night before a long
trip.
• Travel at times you are normally awake, and stay overnight to
break up a long trip rather than drive straight through.
• Schedule a break every two hours or 100 miles. Switch drivers
if possible.
• Stop driving if you become sleepy; someone who is tired could
fall asleep at any time.
Drivers have a near-universal understanding
that driving when you’re tired is risky. Almost every driver surveyed in AAA’s Traffic Safety Culture
Index surveys reports that they find driving while
extremely drowsy to be unacceptable. But, as with
so many risky driving behaviors, we don’t always
apply that knowledge to ourselves. Better awareness of the risks of driving through droopy eyelids
can help prevent an avoidable tragedy.

Ansonia is a friendly
place with much to do *
WHY YOU SHOULD GO
Due to its location along the Naugatuck River,
Ansonia used to be a thriving industrial center.
The manufacturers have since left, but the history remains with its residents, who are welcoming to visitors and can’t wait to tell you all about
the town.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
David Humphreys House: Visit the birthplace of the Revolutionary War officer and close
friend of George Washington. It’s open yearround and offers great historical insight into life
in Ansonia during Colonial times.
Ansonia Nature & Recreation Center:
Explore the scenic beauty of the region at the
nature center on Deerfield Road. The center
features more than 2 miles of nature trails, and
great spots for the kids to play and fish around
this former dairy farm.
Ansonia Riverwalk: The riverwalk runs
through town, along the Naugatuck River, and
is the ideal place to take a walk with the kids or
pets. The path stretches just a little over a mile
in length, and is accessible to those with disabilities, and those with bikes and strollers.
WHERE YOU SHOULD EAT
Antonio’s: This Main Street restaurant and
bar is a must-try. It has great Italian food, plus
lunch and dinner specials, all at a moderate
price.
Duchess Drive-In: A great local spin on takeout. Located on Pershing Drive, Duchess has a
Elephant’s Trunk Country Flea Market

Dining Out
Some sweet indulgence
By Linda Giuca
American author Ernestine
Ulmer is hardly a household
name, but her most-often recited quote rings true for anyone
with a serious sweet tooth. “Life
is uncertain. Eat dessert first,”
she suggested.
Some diehard dessert fans
choose a restaurant based on its
end-of-the-meal sweets. Others
take home part of their entree
to make sure they have the
appetite for dessert. Restaurants
that have embraced the farm-totable movement extend the use
of local ingredients to their desserts, using seasonal fruit and
fresh dairy products and eggs.
Not all restaurant owners can
afford the luxury of a full-time
pastry chef, but the specialty
food trade has grown to include
good quality bakeries that sell
exclusively to restaurants and
fill the gap with some excellent choices. The following
restaurants, however, – and we
include a food truck for those
on the go – make their own desserts. Their selections change
with the seasons but all include
their signature or most popular
sweets year-round.
CHRISTOPHE’S CREPES
Fairfield
A classically trained French
chef who says he insists on
high-quality ingredients, Christophe Ensenat has made the
feather-light crepe the mainstay
of his business for the past
three years. On most weekdays,
from noon to 2 p.m., his sunny
yellow truck can be found near
the Fairfield Public Library on
Old Post Road. (To make sure
Ensenat is at his post, call 646596-6879 and, if he’s busy, leave
a message and he’ll return the
call quickly.) His menu features
both savory and sweet crepes
and a couple of daily specials.
Fillings often contain ingredients grown at local farms. The
most popular crepes are Nutella
with either fresh strawberries or bananas, but the chef’s
repertoire also includes coconut
chocolate, chocolate almond,
caramel and fresh apples, and
dulce de leche. All crepes, said
Ensenat, are prepared “at the
moment.” The chef also is available for catering gigs such as
showers and birthday parties.
He parks the truck in the driveway, prepares the warm crepes
and whisks them into the home
to serve to guests.
GINGERBITZ
New Canaan
This 15-seat cafe on Elm
Street just opened in May, but
owner Karen Zuckert is no novice to the dessert business. She
has been baking wedding cakes,
sweets and pastries, including her signature gingerbread
houses and cookies, for 21 years.
Soups, salads and sandwiches,
including the bread, are housemade, while Zuckert makes sure
that the dessert offerings are
plentiful and eclectic, drawing on tarts, pies, cakes and
breakfast pastry. Besides the
ever-present soft ginger cookies, other customer favorites
include key lime pie and carrot
cake. Fruit crisps and cobblers
are a staple, the choice of fruit
dependent on the season, and
there is always a gluten-free offering. Zuckert also takes orders
for special-occasion cakes,
whose look and decorations she
describes as “whimsical” and
reminiscent of 1950s baking.
GOOD NEWS CAFE
Woodbury
This month, owner/chef
Carole Peck celebrates the 21st
anniversary of her art-filled cafe
and restaurant, known for its
sophisticated, seasonal cuisine.
That milestone deserves to be
commemorated with a slice of
the signature “mile-high” coconut cake, served with mango
and raspberry sauce. The airy
cake and a classic crème brulée
have carved out a spot on the
dessert menus, which change
seasonally. Pastry chef Annie
Gallardo typically offers about
10 sweets plus locally produced
Bridgewater chocolates, SoCo
Creamery sorbets and Arethusa
ice cream. There are choices for
all tastes. Root beer or cream
soda floats recall old-fashioned
soda fountains. “Better than
Yankee Doodles” chocolate
cupcake with chocolate sauce
and whipped cream is a grownup version of a child’s treat.
Desserts based on meringues
or cream puffs bring a taste of
France, where Peck conducts
food tours during the year, to
her Connecticut tables.
MARJOLAINE PASTRY SHOP
New Haven
This charming cafe and
bakery in the upper State
Street neighborhood has both

all tastes. The current owner,

proprietor, Rusty Hamilton, for
15 years. She took over the shop
three years ago and continues
to bake Hamilton’s menu but
is carefully adding her own
touches – like the pink decor,
the in-progress wall mural of
the Eiffel Tower and some Spanish desserts, including Puerto
Rican-style flan that Cardenas’
mother makes every week. The
shop’s signature dessert and
namesake, the Marjolaine, is a
layered confection that includes
hazelnut meringue and chocolate Chantilly crème but is available by special order only. For
more immediate gratification,
there are the popular fruit tarts,
croissants, Danish pastries and
brownies. These dark chocolateglazed bars take on a different
look every season such as topping of orange buttercream for
fall. Chocolate fans may also like
the turkey candies, miniature
birds of marzipan and ganache
dipped in chocolate.

10 TripTiks®
By George Morse
You don’t need to know how to
pronounce Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to
enjoy a symphony orchestra.
From classical compositions to
popular music, pre-concert lectures,
kids’ programs and educational classes,
today’s symphony orchestras offer a
variety of ways to appreciate orchestral
music.
The following symphony orchestras
feature special programs in addition to
concerts.
1. Baltimore Symphony Orchestra,
Baltimore, Md.: Want to learn about
classical music? Then the Off the Cuff
series might be for you. Hear the backstory of compositions in an entertaining
forum with a performance. For children,
(6 months to 3 years old) the Music Box
Series uses interactive shows and small
ensembles to promote musical development. The orchestra also presents
classical and “SuperPops” performances
between two venues – Baltimore and
North Bethesda.
2. Boston Symphony Orchestra,
Boston, Mass.: The Boston Symphony
Orchestra performs dozens of concerts
annually, including summer shows at
Tanglewood in Lenox, Mass. The orchestra’s home is Symphony Hall, where
visitors can see the venue on a tour.
Symphony Hall is the site of BSO101,
classes that provide an inside look at
the orchestra or help enhance listening
skills.
3. Hartford Symphony Orchestra,
Hartford, Conn.: The Bushnell Center
for the Performing Arts is where you
can hear this orchestra’s Masterworks

Explore Salem’s past, embrace its present
By Craig Idlebrook
When someone says “Salem,” does an image of a witch
pop into your head? This
quirky peninsula town’s image
will forever be intertwined
with the infamous 1692 witch
trials. It’s an identity Salem
has fully embraced, with
witch-based museums, tours
and theater.
The spooky action culminates with the Salem Haunted
Happenings festival, when the
town becomes the national
epicenter of Halloween.
Recently, the community has branched out to
become much more than
a single-theme destination for tourists. There
has been an arts revival,
including the creation
of a popular year-round
theater and a summer
arts festival.
Historians also have
been successfully unburying Salem’s vital role in
the Revolutionary War. And
the town is almost as popular
a sailing port as it was when
it was known as a haven for
pirates. Salem has so much
to offer that you could bypass

Normandy
Veterans return 70 years later
By George Morse
For Owen Mahony, returning
to Normandy was the trip of a
lifetime.
On June 8, the Warwick, R.I.,
resident and AAA member visited Omaha Beach with his wife,
Teresa. It had been 70 years
and two days since Mahony
stepped foot on the northern
coast of France, having gone
ashore from a U.S. Navy ship
carrying vehicles and supplies
during the Allied forces’ invasion of Normandy.
Though he couldn’t get to
the exact spot of his D-Day
landing, Mahony was able to
identify the location using a
large map at the Normandy
American Cemetery and
Memorial. When he pointed to
the site, Mahony said, fellow
visitors took notice.
“Someone said ‘Were you
there?’ I said ‘Yes.’ Everybody
started to flock around, cameras were going like mad,” he
recalled.
And that wasn’t the first
point of the trip at which fellow travelers took interest in
Mahony, whose journey to Normandy was part of an excursion
with Viking River Cruises.
Mahony said he was identified as the sole D-Day veteran
on his cruise ship, and he was
invited to say a few words to
his fellow passengers. After
describing his experience,
including the sight of dead
and wounded soldiers, Mahony
said, he led a prayer and invited
others to show love and respect
for their fellow man.
“They started to clap. It was
like a thunderbolt of applause. I
stood there for a while and the
applause wouldn’t stop. Then,
I walked about 30 feet back
to my wife. … I stood there, I
kissed my wife and she hugged
me. Then I finally sat down.
Only a minute or two after I sat
down did the applause stop,”
he said.
At the cemetery, Mahony
said, the cruise company offered him the chance to lay a

where will
wreath at a memorial statue,
which he did with the help of a
Korean War veteran also traveling with the cruise.
A few months before his
trip, Mahony said he wasn’t
sure what to expect from his
return – he just wanted to head
back to the beach and be open
to whatever came. During his
time in Normandy, Mahony
said, he remembered everything from the choppy English
Channel of D-Day morning
to the black stripes painted
beneath the wings of American
fighter planes, added so troops
on the ground would know not
to shoot them down. He was
even reminded of the overcast skies from seven decades
earlier.
Mahony said he collected
sand from the shore and placed
it into vials with small American flags, which he gave to a
number of people, including
his 12 children.
“It was beyond all our
expectations,” Mahony said of
the trip.
In contrast to Mahony, AAA
member Donald McCarthy’s
return to Normandy this summer was far from his first.
Owen Mahony, a veteran who served during the invasion at
Normandy in World War II, lays a wreath at a memorial there
during a trip back to the area in June.
McCarthy, also of Warwick,
fought with the U.S. Army’s
29th Division during the invasion and said he was among the
second wave of soldiers to hit
Omaha Beach. McCarthy had
already been back to France
multiple times when he arrived
at the shore for ceremonies
commemorating the 70th anniversary of D-Day on June 6.
“It was very exciting. It was a
wonderful experience. Having gone through a number
of other [anniversaries], the
40th, the 50th, the 60th, this
was probably the best. … The
whole thing was very well
planned,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy said he and a small
group of other D-Day veterans
were led to the site, where they
watched the sun rise over the
channel at about 6:30 a.m.,
the same time the first ground
forces struck seven decades
earlier.
“It was rather exciting and
a very emotional moment for
us,” McCarthy said.
About six weeks later, McCarthy once again returned to
France. That time, he accepted
the French Legion of Honor,
the country’s highest decoration.

IMPRESSIONS OF WAR TO IMPRESSIONIST ART
By Dana Hammond
Before the Battle of Normandy and
the heroic D-Day landings that began
the end of World War II, halting Hitler’s
charge across Europe and forever changing the course of history, then-General of
the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower told his
troops: “The eyes of the world are upon
you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you.”
On hallowed ground, in the now-tranquil
north of France, that statement still
rings true.
NORMANDY AMERICAN CEMETERY
I grabbed my father’s hand as we left
footsteps above the fallen, not marching,
but softly walking among them on a bluff
high atop Omaha Beach at the Normandy American Cemetery. Our gaze wasn’t
wide enough to encompass the seemingly endless field of white marble crosses,
nearly 10,000 headstones aligned facing
west. It awed us. And, while I wish we
could have read each one, our prayers
went out to all. Among the dead are
38 sets of brothers buried side by side,
including a pair who inspired the film,
“Saving Private Ryan.” We found more
names in The Garden of the Missing and
paused to marvel at a soaring sculpture
titled “Spirit of American Youth Rising
from the Waves.”
The cemetery also contains allegorical
statues representing the United States
and France, as well as a chapel with a
mosaic depicting America blessing her
departing warriors and France bestowing laurel wreaths upon the dead. A
visitors center honors the World War II
generation and clearly maps the 50-mile
stretch of beaches – code-named Sword,
Juno, Gold, Utah and, of course, Omaha.
Nearby, a path descends to the shore.
Like the cemetery above and much of
the coastline beyond, the scene proved
achingly beautiful.
MONUMENTS AND MUSEUMS
History lives in this place where many
died. Residents remember, maybe even
more mindfully since the 70th anniversary of the Allied landings this summer,
which most view as the last decennial affair D-Day veterans will be able to attend.
Monuments and museums abound. I’ve

provides inspiration at the former Giverny home of impressionist painter Claude Monet.
AROUND THE RIVERBEND
The Seine winds through Normandy, making riverboats a convenient way to
explore. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has several vessels in France, including its
new gem, SS Catherine. These super-inclusive boats pamper passengers, covering
everything from gourmet food and drinks to local tours and gratuities. Plus, exquisite
decor turns each into a plush cocoon. A classic, weeklong Paris & Normandy itinerary sails round-trip from The City of Light on River Baroness. A 15-day Grand France
itinerary combines the Normandy cruise with a separate leg through Burgundy and
Provence aboard SS Catherine.
always believed travel trumps a textbook,
but visiting Normandy created an almost
tangible link across time.
WWII had my full attention as we
revisited history at sites such as Pointe
du Hoc, where U.S. Army Rangers scaled
daunting cliffs. Jutting into the English
Channel, strategically poised between
Utah and Omaha beaches, the landscape
remains pockmarked from bombardments. Surveying the terrain makes
the epic stories of its siege seem like
understatements. Fittingly, a daggershaped Ranger Monument towers atop
a German bunker at the site. Another
lesson waited amid remnants of an
artificial harbor constructed in England,
towed across the channel and assembled
at Gold Beach. The D-Day Museum
chronicles this engineering feat, and at
low tide, we inspected hulking debris
scattered across the sand and surf.
RIVER CRUISING
Other sides of Normandy emerged,
too. Free from logistical concerns, we
covered ground with ease via Insight
Vacations. A dedicated tour director
doubled as our traveling concierge,
expediting access while doling out
thoughtful “Insight Flourishes,” such as
Normandy’s coveted butter cookies and
bottles of golden Calvados. We savored
gooey Camembert, crusty breads and
vibrant fruits de mer, including buckets
of steaming mussels. Caramels crafted
from fine Norman cream satisfied sweettooths.
We studied the Norman Conquest
Enjoy a getaway to
by decoding the extraordinary Bayeux
Tapestry, a 229-foot embroidery from the
11th century that unfolds like a medieval
tableau, and trekked to the top of iconic
Mont Saint-Michel, where an ancient
abbey crowns a rock islet. In Rouen, the
lacy facade of its gothic cathedral – one
of Claude Monet’s muses – commanded
attention. We also ducked under the
city’s famous Renaissance clock tower
and meandered though ruins of the
square, where Joan of Arc burned at
the stake. In Honfleur, narrow Norman
houses adorned a historic fishing port.
It’s another impressionist dreamscape.
Giverny, Monet’s final home and site of
the gardens that inspired countless canvases, lies within Normandy as well.
Insight promises fewer seats and more
legroom on its business class-style buses.
Wi-Fi was another perk. Multiple tours
feature Normandy. Ours operated roundtrip from Paris and included chateauhopping in the Loire Valley, where we
actually stayed in a chateau with huge
French windows that opened onto formal gardens. Filled with a sense of joie
de vivre, we pondered our trip from that
perch and gave thanks that France is still
French. And, we remembered why.

Travel unplugged
Leave technology behind and truly unwind
By George Morse
These days, it seems nearly impossible to get away from it all.
While laptops, tablets and smartphones offer a lot of day-to-day convenience, the growth of connected
technology can make it increasingly
difficult to unplug and truly relax,
even while vacationing.
Thankfully, there are still places
around the world where travelers
can disconnect. Here are a handful of
destinations that can help you leave
the modern world behind.
TURKS AND CAICOS
You’ll find 2 miles of beach on
Pine Cay but you probably won’t see
a car. Motor vehicles are banned on
the privately owned 800-acre island,
one of 40 that make up Turks and
Caicos. Pine Cay is home to just one
13-room resort where guests can bid
adieu to the daily grind. There’s no
air conditioning or televisions, and
cellphones are prohibited.
Those looking for a more moderate
unplugged experience may consider
Providenciales. It’s the most populated island of Turks and Caicos but
there’s plenty of opportunity to
shut down with some of the world’s
best scuba diving and the famous,
12-mile-long Grace Bay Beach.
“This is a place where you come
back and you don’t remember your
passwords at work. That’s how I
judge if I really did unwind somewhere,” said Charlotte Nichols,
director of business development and
travel marketing at AAA Southern
New England.
Norway offers an abundance of beautiful areas, like the Geiranger Fjord, where
you can disconnect from technology and enjoy natural wonders.
HAWAII
The beach can go a long way toward helping you unplug, and Hawaii
has some interesting spots to explore. Punalu’u is a black sand beach
on Hawaii Island made from sand and
ground lava. The island is also home
to Papakolea, a green sand beach colored by olivine crystals. “You can do
tours and hiking, too. There’s plenty
of outside adventure,” Nichols said.
Those looking for further escape
can fly to Maui where the Travaasa
Hana
offers accommodations free of radios, clocks and televisions.
AFRICA
Not only is this continent home
to vast natural beauty and amazing
wildlife, travelers looking to unplug
on safari have a bountiful number of
destinations to choose from.
“You come back changed. There’s
something about it that touches your
soul,” Nichols said.
South Africa’s Kruger National Park,
for example, includes nearly 5 million
acres of diversity while the Okavango
Delta, of Botswana, has an array of
wildlife-spotting opportunities.
In Tanzania, nearly 90,000 tourists flock to Serengeti National Park
every year. You’ll start to unplug just
getting to the area, which requires
either a second flight or an eight-hour
car ride from Arusha. The adjacent
Ngorongoro Conservation Area is
home to the 2,000-foot-deep Ngorongoro Crater and an annual migration
that includes 1 million wildebeest.
MONTANA
Unplugging isn’t just an option at Mountain Sky Guest Ranch
in Emigrant. Stacy
Townsend, director of sales and marketing, said it’s a critical part of the
experience.
There are no televisions or Internet access in guest rooms (Wi-Fi is
available in the main lodge), and you
shouldn’t expect to get cellphone
reception. Instead, guests can take
advantage of outdoor experiences
such as horseback riding, hiking and
fly-fishing on the ranch’s 8,000 acres.
There’s a spa and regular yoga classes,
and Yellowstone National Park is
nearby.
NORWAY
The fjords are among Europe’s most
noteworthy landscapes, and travelers looking to glimpse these glaciercarved inlets have a few options at
their disposal. Turn off your cellphone, and enjoy the natural wonders
by rail along the 292-mile Bergen
Railway, which stretches from Oslo to
Bergen. It’s about a seven-hour ride,
and along with plenty of scenery, the
trip includes Europe’s highest train altitude, at just over 4,000 feet in Finse.
Train rides can be combined with ferry
tours for a slightly different view.

AAA SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND | NOVEMBER 2014
Travelogue: Eastern Caribbean
Rick’s
picks
A 63rd anniversary cruise
By George Morse
Richard and Eileen Russell celebrated
their 63rd wedding anniversary with a
cruise earlier this year. The AAA members
from Canton, Mass., have celebrating milestones such as anniversaries and Richard’s
birthday on more than two dozen cruises.
This year, the Russells returned to
the eastern Caribbean aboard Celebrity
Cruises’ Celebrity Summit. Sailing from
San Juan, Puerto Rico, to the Cape Liberty
Cruise Port in Bayonne, N.J., the couple
visited St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Tortola (in the British Virgin Islands) with an
overnight in Bermuda.
Here’s more on their journey:
How did this trip come together?
Eileen: We decided to go to the AAA
[Travel Marketplace] because so many of
the cruise lines are there. … It’s an opportunity to get so much coverage on so
many different things.
Why do you like cruising?
Richard: We don’t have to worry about
where we’re going to eat or anything like
that. A cruise is relaxing. We get to see
the shows, and we have a dance once in
awhile.
Eileen: We don’t need to unpack and
repack. It’s a comfort thing. It’s like you
big city
fireworks
get on and you’re home. It takes us where
we want to go without any kind of difficulty.
What made you pick the eastern
Caribbean?
Eileen: My husband said ‘Let’s go to the
Caribbean,’ and he likes the eastern and
southern better than the western. We’ve
done the western several times.
Any favorite spots from your last
trip?
Richard: We liked St. Thomas. The
shopping is good in St. Thomas.
Eileen: In Tortola, we were able to sit at
a lovely bar on the beach. We had lovely
tropical drinks under the shade. ... I find
that very appealing in the heat.
Tell me about Bermuda.
Eileen: I love Bermuda. We’ve been to
Bermuda before, sometimes just a trip
from Boston. That’s probably the easiest trip of all, living here. … Bermuda is
warm, tropical, friendly, easy to maneuver,
and I think it’s so pretty. Everywhere you
go is pretty. It’s another world. It’s not
as busy as here. They dress differently,
Bermuda shorts on the men and women
staying cool in their flowery dresses. It’s
a very comfortable place and a beautiful
island.
Eileen and Richard Russell stopped at
the Swizzle Inn in Bermuda.
Did you enjoy the Summit?
Eileen: We loved it. The room was in a
good location. … We were able to get to
everything pretty easily. The food, the
cabin steward and the shows were excellent.
Have you selected somewhere for
the 64th?
Eileen: Not at this moment. We always
look through the information that gets
sent. It’s good because it opens a door we
might not have thought of.

Editor’s note: As the vice
president of Travel for AAA
Southern New England, Rick
Del Nero is our go-to person for
vacation tips, travel trends and
destination advice. If you have a
suggested topic for Rick’s Picks,
email kobrien@aaasne.com.
It might be
hard to believe,
but it won’t be
long before we
say goodbye to
2014 and welcome a new year.
After counting
Del Nero
down to midnight alongside friends and family, people in cities around the
globe will celebrate the occasion
by enjoying some of the largest
fireworks on display all year.
AAA Travel has seen an increase
in members booking a new
year’s getaway to destinations
both domestic and abroad.
If you’re looking for bright
lights on New Year’s Eve, here
are a few of the world’s best big
city fireworks displays:
Sydney: The Australian city
is one of the first places to
celebrate the new year, and is
home to some of the night’s
best fireworks. Festivities are
centered on Sydney Harbour,
including the eye-catching
Sydney Harbour Bridge. The
event drew a crowd of about
1.6 million last year.
Orlando: There’s always
magic in the air at Walt Disney
World. On New Year’s Eve,
patrons from near and far flock
to Orlando to ring in the new
year with fireworks at the Magic
Kingdom.
London: At a top height of
443 feet, the London Eye is a
great way to get an aerial view
of England’s capital. On New
Year’s Eve – as Big Ben signals
midnight – the giant Ferris
wheel is at the heart of an illuminating show that can be seen
along the Thames River.
Berlin: More than a million
people pack the German capital
every New Year’s Eve between
Victory Column and the historic
Brandenburg Gate. It ends with
a massive fireworks demonstration when the clock strikes 12.
Las Vegas: Every night is
bright in Las Vegas, but the sky
turns especially brilliant in the
moments after midnight on
New Year’s Eve. Countdown to
2015, then keep an eye to the
sky as the roofs of several city
casinos erupt with color.
Edinburgh: In Scotland, the
new year celebration is known
as Hogmanay. Festivities
include a torchlight procession
(on Dec. 30) and music. New
Year’s Eve culminates with a
beautiful display of fireworks
against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle as attendees are
invited to take part in a singalong of Auld Lang Syne.

BONUS: Holiday Gift Guide – your reference for easy shopping!
How do you
wrap up safety?
GIVE THE GIFT OF AAA MEMBERSHIP!
Here’s a thoughtful,
easy gift idea: give
that AAA peace of
mind feeling to those
you love. Your son
who just got his
license. An elderly
parent who drives
alone a lot. Or perhaps a niece away at college.
Everyone appreciates knowing AAA is always just
a phone call away — whether you need a tow, a
jumpstart or help planning a trip.
RACK UP THE REWARDS!
The AAA Member Rewards Visa® credit card offers a wide range of rewards from cash back (and who
can’t use cash?!) to gift cards to AAA membership, travel packages and even auto repair vouchers!
MAXIMIZE THE BENEFIT
Of course, you don’t want to spend money you don’t have just to get rewards, but if you use it for
everyday purchases that you’d buy anyway, then you’re getting the most bang for your spending buck.
Things like gas, grocery and drug store purchases can really add up, and reward you all year long.
For example, the average U.S. household spent $2,912 on gasoline
in 2012, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
And a family of four typically spends up to $290 at the grocery
store every week according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
($15,080 for a year.) What’s more, an American Research Group
Study says the average American spent $854 on
holiday gifts and goodies last year. Keeping in
mind that you earn double points on both
gas and grocery store purchases with
AAA’s card, let’s do the math.
There are two types of memberships:
•
Primary membership for the first person
in a household.
ITEM
•
Associate membership for each additional person
in the same household.
Gas
You give, everyone saves.
Grocery store
For every Primary membership you purchase as a
gift, we’re waiving the $15 enrollment fee! And you
save $5 off every Associate membership, too!
Holiday gifts
As members, your gift recipients
will enjoy the same advantages of
AAA membership that you do:

24/7 roadside assistance (including bicycle service)
•
ID Theft Protection
•

Turkey Trot brings thousands together
By Theresa Sullivan Barger
Competitive runners and
families looking to burn
calories before sitting down
to their holiday feast will
join together for the 36th
annual SoundRUNNER Madison Jaycees Turkey Trot on
Thanksgiving morning.
Some 4,500 participants in
the 5-mile run and 2½-mile
walk – whether dressed in
running gear or a turkey
costume – help the Jaycees
raise $75,000 each year for
local charities, scholarships
and area families in need.
“Because Thanksgiving
is food-related, a lot of our
money goes to Branford,
Madison, Guilford, Clinton,
Essex, Old Saybrook and
other shoreline food pantries,” said Madison resident
David Moloney, race director.
Other beneficiaries are The
Cove Center for Grieving
Children in Guilford, which
provides support and services
to children who have lost a
loved one, Sarah Foundation,
a nonprofit that fosters independence in those with developmental disabilities, and
Vista Vocational & Life Skills
Center, an organization that
provides employment to
teens and adults with developmental disabilities.
The 5-mile race attracts
about 2,900 runners, and
another 1,500 people of all
ages take part in the “family
fun walk,” Moloney said. It’s
not unusual for three, four

and even five generations to
join in. For example, he said,
about 20 members of the
Kelly family – ages 5 to 78 –
participate in either the walk
or run each year.
The Thanksgiving Day
run begins at 10 a.m., and
the walk, held on a different
course, begins at 10:05 a.m.
The park is closed to cars
at 9:30 a.m., so be sure to
arrive early, even if you’ve
pre-registered.
Go to Active.com to register, and search for Sound
Runner Madison Turkey
Trot. Registration is $20 in
advance and $25 the day before and the day of the race.
When picking up race
packets, runners and walkers
may drop off nonperishable
food for local food pantries
and new and gently used
books, which will be collected for the Read to Grow
organization. Packets may
also be picked up the day
of the race. Long-sleeve

“It makes you feel good
because you go out and
run and feel you can eat a
little bit more,” said Preston
Ranton, general manager of
SoundRUNNER, the race’s
title sponsor. Several business sponsors provide afterrace goodies such as clam
chowder, hot cider, apples,
bagels, wine and Red Hook
beer. “There’s a little party
afterward,” he said. “It’s a
fun atmosphere.”

Relax, recharge with stay in spectacular Sedona
By Mindy J. Ginley
Located in the middle of
the Arizona desert, Sedona is
a vacationers’ paradise full of
resorts and spas, canyons and
red rock formations. The area
offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the world
with mild seasons year-round.
Historically a rural ranching
community located far off the
beaten path, Sedona’s unrivaled beauty became nationally known through the motion
picture industry (many John

here, and it was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Thunder
Mountain ride). The city of
Sedona was incorporated in
1988.
Visitors can enjoy a variety

Distracted driving
Voice-control devices are far from ideal
By Rob Bhatt
When the dangers of using a
cellphone, texting and fiddling
with devices while driving
started becoming apparent
about a decade ago, many
people assumed that hands-free
technology could offer a safe
way to stay connected from
behind the wheel.
But a growing body of
research is showing that assumption might be creating a
false sense of security. In the
most significant attempt to date
to assess distractions caused by
voice-controlled communication and navigation features in
cars, test subjects using such
systems showed measurable
declines in their ability to drive
safely. A few even crashed.
Fortunately, the collisions
occurred in a driving simulator
– and only three times. But that
they happened at all helps illustrate the potentially dangerous
levels of distraction that handsfree vehicle devices can cause,
even as they allow motorists to
keep their eyes on the road and
their hands on the wheel.
NAVIGATIONAL SYSTEMS
AND SIRI
The University of Utah
research team behind the distracted driving study found that
using hands-free, menu-based
navigational systems or Apple’s
Siri while driving created higher
levels of cognitive, or mental,
distraction than conversing on a
hands-free cellphone. With prior
epidemiological studies showing
that talking on a mobile phone
while driving – handheld or
hands-free – quadruples crash
risks, the new findings are
garnering attention.
“The most significant
takeaway is that this further
confirms that cognitive distraction is real and that it has real
consequences,” said J. Peter
Kissinger, president and CEO of
the AAA Foundation for Traffic
Safety, which sponsored the
study. “The more we can get
that message out, the better off
we’ll be.”
Compared to the volumes of
data collected on how manual
and visual distractions, such as
texting and talking on handheld
phones, affect drivers, Kissinger notes that relatively little
research exists on the cognitive
side of the equation.
INATTENTION BLINDNESS
Yet scientists have known
for years about inattention
blindness, a phenomenon that
can cause a person engaged in a
mentally demanding task to fail
to notice something happening
right in front of him or her. As
more voice-controlled devices
appear in new cars, the Utah
team’s work is demonstrating
how such devices can inadvertently cause a form of inattention blindness for motorists.
In a prior study completed in
2013, the same research group
established an index rating
the levels of cognitive distraction created by various tasks
people perform while driving.
On a scale of 1 to 5, conversing
on a hands-free mobile phone
garnered a 2.3 rating, while
using a handheld phone (illegal
in 14 states and the District
of Columbia) came in a touch
higher at 2.5.
In the new study, completed
over the summer, test subjects
using a voice-controlled navi-

speech recognition, while
driving experienced a 2.8 level of
distraction. The level rose to 3.6
when the navigational system
produced speech-translation errors (common in systems in use
today). Participants using Siri
to check and compose text messages, update their Facebook or
Twitter status and review and
modify calendars experienced a
4.1-level distraction.
David Strayer, the University
of Utah psychology professor
who led the research team,
believes that lapses that caused
Siri to sometimes provide
different answers to the same
question are at least partially to
blame for its high rating.
“When the study participants asked Siri to do the exact
same thing [at different times],
sometimes it would do it, and
sometimes it wouldn’t,” he said.
“We could never figure out why
it got it sometimes and didn’t
others, but as soon as you have a
system that doesn’t have a high
level of reliability, it becomes
frustrating to use.”
Strayer’s team analyzed reactions demonstrated by volunteer test subjects in a driving
simulator or while driving an
instrumented Subaru Outback
on suburban Salt Lake City
roads. In the driving simulator,
participants “rear-ended” a “car”
they were following while using
Siri (twice) and a menu-based
navigational device (once). No
collisions occurred on the public roads; the car used for the
latter tests was equipped with a
STATISTICAL ANALYSES
Behind the numbers
How do you measure something that
you can’t see, feel or hear? When it came
to assessing how well drivers were paying
attention to the road while using various hands-free devices, the University
of Utah research team led by psychology
professor David Strayer analyzed reaction
times, brain activity, eye movements and
other factors linked by prior research to
distracted driving.
In separate rounds of testing, Strayer’s
team asked volunteers (different groups
of 40 to 45 people in each round) to
stare at a fixed image on a computer
screen, follow a lead vehicle in a driving
simulator or drive on suburban Salt Lake
City streets in an instrumented Subaru
Outback.
Following internationally accepted
standards for measuring reaction times,
a small LED light mounted to a headband
was placed above and off to the side of
each participant’s left eye. Participants
also wore caps fitted with sensors to monitor brain waves associated with mental
workload, while electrodes and cameras
tracked their eye movements.
As each participant began performing
the primary activity for his or her setting,
the headband light would periodically
flash green or red. The volunteers were
asked to press a switch attached to their
thumb when the light turned green, but
not when it turned red.

As each round continued, they were
asked to perform a number of secondary
tasks with devices modeled after handsfree features available in cars. These
included changing a radio station through
simple voice commands; listening to text
and email messages; listening to and
composing replies to messages; operating a menu-based navigational system
with perfect reliability and, separately, a
system susceptible to speech-translation
errors; and using Siri to listen to and com-
pose messages, update their social media
status, and review and modify calendar
appointments.
Participants’ reaction times were

they activated the switch in response to
the lights.

redundant braking system accessible to a passenger seated in
the car for added safety.
On the less-distracting side,
a system that allowed drivers to
use simple voice commands to
change a radio station or adjust
an air conditioner registered
a 1.9 rating. For comparison’s
sake, the 2013 study attached
a 1.8 rating to listening to an
audiobook.
In a companion study also
completed over the summer,
the researchers analyzed the use
of voice-based radio-tuning and
phone-dialing features available
in cars offered by six manufacturers. Distraction levels ranged
from 1.7 for such features
available through Toyota’s
Entune system to 3.7 for those
in Chevrolet’s MyLink.
“If the car commands are
done well, so that I can say,
‘Change a radio station,’ and it’s
not some cumbersome thing,
it does not cause a problem,”
Strayer said. “So, the good news
is, it can be done in a way that’s
not troublesome.”
WHAT’S NEXT?
In its efforts to make in-car
devices safer, AAA is sharing the
Strayer team’s findings with
the auto industry and government agencies such as the
National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration. NHTSA plans,
in the next year or two, to issue
voluntary guidelines to automakers, aftermarket suppliers,
the wireless industry and others
on minimizing distractions created by future voice-controlled
devices offered to motorists.
In the meantime, AAA’s traffic
safety experts advise motorists
to be aware that not all handsfree vehicle devices are risk-free
and to minimize the use of such
features while driving. “It’s
very important for people to
understand that voice-activated
systems do not all perform
equally,” said Jake Nelson, director of traffic safety advocacy and
research for AAA. “Depending
on how they are designed, these
technologies can be more distracting or less distracting.”

AAA answers your
questions on traffic safety
Prepare in advance to get your home ready for winter.
Is your home ready
for winter’s wrath?
Winter can be a dangerous
time for your home.
From snow, ice and freezing
rain to wind and bitter cold
temperatures, the season presents conditions that can leave
homeowners facing an insurance claim or a hefty repair bill.
But homeowners are not defenseless against these threats.
Here’s some advice from AAA
Southern New England’s insurance experts to help protect
your home during the months
ahead.
A burst pipe can cause a
lot of damage. To avoid this
headache, set your thermostat
to at least 65 degrees. That will
help keep water from freezing,
which generates the pressure
that ruptures pipes. You can
also leave hot water running
at a trickle, insulate exposed
pipes and seal any holes in
outside walls or the foundation.
If you’re planning to be away
for an extended period, having
your pipes drained by a professional might be something to
consider.
Tree branches can wreak
havoc in any season, especially
winter, with storms that have
the potential to bring limbs
crashing to the ground or into
your roof. Have any looming
branches trimmed ahead of
time.
Ice dams can block water
from draining properly and,
over time, lead to moisture
entering an attic or the inside
of your home’s walls. These
dams form when warm air
escaping a roof melts snow or
ice, which reforms at the roof’s
edge. You’ll want to be sure
your gutters are clear, and it’s
a good idea to keep your attic
about the same temperature as
outside (no more than 10 degrees difference) to avoid such
a build-up. It’s also helpful to
keep your ceiling well insulated
to prevent heat from reaching
the roof, and to replace missing
or damaged roof shingles.
If you plan to travel, ask
someone to watch your home,
and be sure to bring your insurance policy numbers and your
agent’s contact information in
case you need to file a claim.
Slippery snow and ice can
be even more dangerous near
broken steps and handrails. If
you’re considering a repair,
now might be a better time
than after someone falls. And,
it’s always helpful to have rock
salt, sand and snow shovels at
the ready to remove snow and
ice after a storm.
When do drivers need to use turn signals? Is there a rule as to how far before
a turn you should use a turn signal?
Proper signaling is critical to safe driving.
As a general rule, drivers should give a proper
turn signal at least 200 feet before turning or
changing lanes. At higher speeds you should
give a proper turn signal at least 300 feet
before turning or changing lanes.
What are the rules regarding headlights? I have seen purple and blue
headlights, and in my opinion, they are
dangerous.
Headlights have very specific rules, and the
lights you are referring to are generally called
novelty lights and are not designed for on-road
use. Headlights used for on-road driving must
meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
requirements.
My boyfriend gets too many speeding
tickets, so for his birthday I got him a radar detector and cover that is supposed
to block my license plate to red-light
cameras. Now that I bought these things,
I’m wondering if they are legal?
Radar detectors are legal in all but the

District of Columbia and part of Virginia. Devices that purposely block a license plate are
specifically illegal in many states. Other states,
such as Massachusetts, prohibit license plate
covers of any type for any reason. Better advice
would be to slow down. It is safer and saves
fuel.
What are the rules regarding tailgating? I see people every day on the
highway, and there isn’t one car length
between them and the car in front of
them. It is positively frightening looking
in the rearview mirror and seeing another car almost in the back seat.
Maintaining a safe following distance between your vehicle and traffic ahead allows you
to see potential dangers in front of the vehicle
you’re following. A good rule for drivers is to
stay at least three seconds behind the vehicle
ahead. When following a vehicle, watch for the
vehicle ahead to pass a fixed object and estimate how much time elapses before you pass
the same object. Add extra time for rain and
snow or limited visibility such as fog.

road? In this monthly column, AAA’s traffic
safety experts will give you the answers. Please

Considerations when
buying a family car
By Shaun McGee
AAA Southern New England’s vice president of
financial services answers your questions.
What should I take into consideration when
shopping for a new family vehicle?
First, you need to identify your family’s needs. A
family of four may fit just fine in a sedan
while a minivan might work better for
those with three or more children.
And, as with any major purchase, it’s
critical to know your budget.
When it comes time to buy, always do
the math on every offer in front of you.
Many dealers give buyers the choice of
McGee
cash back or 0 percent financing. While
no interest seems like a good deal, you might actually
be better suited to take the cash back and secure a low
interest loan, depending on the numbers.
Extended warranties and gap waivers are other
products to consider. Even if you’re buying new, an
extended warranty will protect your purchase beyond
its initial warranty.
A gap waiver safeguards you in the event of a vehicle
theft or total loss, covering any difference between the
cash value of a vehicle and your loan balance.
Dealers regularly offer buyers both of these ancillary
products, though it’s wise to shop around.
Additionally, try to pick a term that makes sense.
What your family needs today might not always be the
case, and you should avoid obligating yourself to payments on a vehicle for longer than you need it.

No matter your stage in life,
saving for future is essential
By George Morse
Whether you’re fresh out of college and just
entering the workforce or you’re getting ready to
retire, saving is an important part of long- and
short-term financial stability.
It’s never too late to start saving, said Shaun
McGee, vice president of financial services for AAA
Southern New England, and no matter where you
are in life, there are some simple saving strategies
that can help put you
“If your company on a good track.
A savings account,
has a 401(k)
match, you have for starters, is a basic
way to start stockto take advantage piling money while
of it
keeping your funds
liquid. McGee said it’s
— Shaun McGee, vice
wise to have at least
president of financial
services for AAA Southern six months worth of
expenditures set aside
New England
and accessible.
“Fund that first. That way, if something happens, you’ve got six months to bail yourself out,”
he said.
Money market accounts are similar to a savings
account though they typically have a higher interest rate and offer a limited number of withdrawals, checks or debits each month.
Longer term, any company match of funds contributed to a retirement account such as a 401(k)
is certainly worth taking advantage of whenever
possible.
“That’s free money. If your company has a
401(k) match, you have to take advantage of it,”
McGee said.
Whether it’s bolstering a savings account or
adding to a 401(k), McGee said that directly
depositing money from your paycheck is a helpful
way for many to save.
We can put the “gold” in your “golden years.”
Like plants, tending to your savings helps it grow.
“It’s a real easy way to do it because you don’t
really feel the effects of it,” he said.
For more specific purposes, such as saving for
a child’s college fund, parents can look at Certificates of Deposit as an option to help bolster what
they’ve set aside. CDs, as they are more commonly
known, are deposits made for a set period of time
that typically offer higher interest returns than
a normal savings account, provided funds aren’t
withdrawn before maturity.
Laddering is one strategy for using CDs, McGee
said, or staggering deposits for varying terms to
ensure all of your available money isn’t tied up at
once.
Congratulations on your graduation!
Here are your bills.

Although vehicle crashes

I recently received my yearly premium for my auto and home
insurance from a major company. After finding a $400 increase from
last year with no claims, I called the company and got the usual
insurance speak (rate increase, all available discounts applied, nothing else can be done). I decided to search other companies. I did the
Internet search of all the major companies that advertise on TV and
either saved a few dollars on the auto, but paid more on the home.
I finally tried AAA and was amazed to find a far better policy for
both home and auto at an $800 savings. The agents were very professional and knowledgeable in their
dealing with my policies. I can’t say that everybody will have the same results that I had, but it would
be worth the time to check it out. I highly recommend AAA Insurance.

still retains the base 2.0-liter,
four-cylinder engine, a 2.0-liter
diesel engine or the battery/
electric hybrid. Besides the
four-door sedan, Volkswagen
still offers the very popular
Jetta SportWagen. Our road
test was in the Jetta SE with
the 1.8-liter engine with automatic transmission.
The interior of the Jetta is
generous, almost matching
the interior room of some
midsize sedans. The front seats
are more comfortable than I
remember from previous Jetta
models; leg and headroom
in the front and rear is quite
good.
The interior is clean and
simple, with controls and gauges that are generally intuitive.
The interior has a nice look and
feel, although it is not quite the
high-quality benchmark that
older Volkswagens were known
for. Buyers looking at the base
model Jetta will find a decidedly plastic look not found in
more upscale models. There is
a decent-size glove compartment and center console, along
with bins and cup holders.
Trunk space borders on
cavernous. The Jetta offers
15.5 cubic feet of usable trunk
space, which can be increased
significantly by folding forward
the 60/40-split rear seatback.
It is also offered with a pass-
through to accommodate
longer items, like skis.
The road test: This latest
Jetta only improves where last
year’s model left off. The ride is
comfortable and the handling
is first rate. Performance from
the 170-horsepower engine was
quite good, easily matching
the performance of last year’s
larger 2.5-liter engine while
returning nearly 5-mpg better
fuel economy.
The EPA rates the Jetta with
the 1.8-liter engine at 26 mpg
in the city and 36 mpg on the
highway; I averaged just over
31 mpg in a mix of mostly
highway driving.
Handling has improved with
the addition of a sophisticated
multi-link independent rear
suspension. The result is more
agile, responsive and precise
handling. Overall, the Jetta is
quiet with little road or wind
noise entering the cabin.
Our test car also benefited
from Volkswagen’s electric
power steering. Generally,
I’m not a fan of electric power
steering, but on this latest
Jetta, it is nicely responsive and
provides a precise feel. Safety is
addressed with a full complement of airbags, including
head-protecting side curtain
airbags. The antilock brakes
were firm and provided quick
smooth stops.
The bottom line: The Jetta
by Volkswagen is a car that I
can now recommend, something that I couldn’t easily do
a few years ago. The improved
performance, nicer interiors
and increased fuel economy all
help make this Jetta perhaps
one of the best models in quite
some time.

NOVEMBER 2014 | AAA SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND
tech talk
By George Morse
One of the country’s most
iconic motorcycle brands has
joined the field of auto manufacturers exploring today’s
electric vehicle landscape.
Project LiveWire is the
name Harley-Davidson has
given its first electric motorcycle. The company announced the project this year
ahead of a U.S. tour that is
expected to visit more than 30
Harley-Davidson dealerships
before the end of 2014, with
additional dates in the United
States, Canada and Europe on
tap for 2015.
“America at its best has always been about reinvention,”
said Matt Levatich, president
and chief operating officer
of Harley-Davidson Motor
Company.
“And, like America, HarleyDavidson has reinvented itself
many times in our history,
with customers leading us
every step of the way. Project
LiveWire is another exciting,
customer-led moment in our
history.”
While the motorcycle isn’t
for sale, spokeswoman Chaya
Jacobs said thousands of
customers had ridden Project
LiveWire as of late August. At
each stop, Project LiveWire is
available for test rides. A motorcycle license is required to
take the bike for a spin though
even those who don’t ride can
experience Project LiveWire
on a simulated riding experience dubbed “Jumpstart.”
“The goal for the Project
LiveWire Experience Tour
is to bring innovation to the
streets and gain feedback
from customers on what they
can expect from an electric
motorcycle that is authentic
Harley-Davidson,” Jacobs
said, adding the company had
received a lot of positive feedback from customers and was
looking forward to learning
more through the end of 2014
and into next year.
For test rides, Harley-Davidson has suggested a range
of 53 miles, Jacobs said, with
a full charge taking about 3.5
hours on a Level 2 charger.
She also said the company is
assessing the optimal range
for use of an electric motorcycle while exploring the
potential to expand the range
beyond other competitive
products.
Project LiveWire goes from
0 to 60 mph in four seconds,
and for demo purposes the
motorcycle is gear limited to a
top speed of 92 mph.
“Electric vehicles, although
they may never be mainstream, will continue to grow
and become more of the overall accepted car and vehicle
culture. This is due in part to
the increased environmental
awareness of some buyers,”
said John Paul, traffic safety
manager at AAA Southern
New England.
In its 2013 annual report,
Yamaha identified two po-

That’s a Harley? But it’s electric
tential electric motorcycles,
including an off-road model,
with an aim to launch in the
near future. Other manufacturers include the Californiabased Zero Motorcycles, which
produced its first prototype
in 2006 and now has models
available at dozens of dealers
across the country, including
locations in New Hampshire,
New Jersey and New York,
according to the company’s
website,
Harley-Davidson expects a
motorcycle such as Project
LiveWire to appeal to younger,
mostly urban customers
whether they’re experienced
or new riders, Jacobs said.
“Project LiveWire is more
like the first electric guitar
– not an electric car. It’s an
expression of individuality and
iconic style that just happens to be electric. Project
LiveWire is a bold statement
for us as a company and
a brand,” said Mark-Hans
Richer, senior vice president

and chief marketing officer
of Harley-Davidson Motor
Company.
The company describes its
riding experience as “visceral”
with “tire-shredding acceleration and an unmistakable new
sound.”
“The sound is a distinct part
of the thrill,” Richer said.
“Think fighter jet on an
aircraft carrier. Project
LiveWire’s unique sound was
designed to differentiate it
from internal combustion and
other electric motorcycles on
the market.”
Decisions about whether
Harley-Davidson brings an
electric motorcycle to market
– and when – Jacobs said, will
be made at a later date.
