NOVEMBER 23, 2014 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe 2 2 || St. St. Maria Maria Goretti Goretti Catholic Catholic Church Church ·· Westfield, Westfield, IN IN November 25, 2012 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 23, 2014 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Pax et Bonum! Today is our last Sunday in Ordinary Time and the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. This beautiful Feast Day is meant to remind all of us that Jesus Christ is the center and head of our lives, our world, and our universe! May we follow Him and imitate His Life every day of our own lives! Today we welcome everyone who joins us around the Altar of the Lord! We welcome our visitors and guests, especially those joining us for the first time! And we also want to welcome home the first wave of our college and university students who are traveling home for the Thanksgiving holiday this week. And that includes our four seminarians, who are coming home from Minnesota this week. It is so good to see all of you again! This Feast Day reminds us that God wants to be first in our lives. We have to admit that it is very easy to let other things and other people usurp that role in our lives. We can easily let popularity, money, our pride, our things become more important than God. And every time we do so, we get ourselves in trouble. False gods never work! They only leave us disappointed and desiring something more! This Feast Day also reminds us that we have a jealous God. Remember the very First Commandment: I AM the Lord your God, you shall NOT have false gods before Me! Are you putting false gods before the one true God in your life? It is a tough question to face up to! And yet, if we love the Colts, or we love golf, or we love Taylor Swift, or we love food, or we love our car, more than we love God, there’s something wrong! It won’t work. We need to let our God be Lord and Master of our lives. One particular way that we have of putting ourselves in the role of God, is when we assume God’s throne of judgment over our brothers and sisters. We are NOT God. We have no business judging our brothers and sisters. None of us do! And yet, how many times do all of us climb right up into God’s seat or throne of judgment, and make all kinds of judgments against our brothers and sisters, as though we were God. Sometimes our sin is that we turn ourselves into little gods, assuming the real God’s role of judgment. We must be very careful about this. Very rarely do we look at our judgments of others as taking over God’s role as Ultimate Judge and ultimately breaking the First Commandment. And yet assuming God’s role and His throne of judgment could very well be one of our worst offenses against letting God be God. We must stop judging each other. And of course, right along with our sin of judgment so many times, is also the sin of gossip. How many times do we pass on our judgments of others through the sin of gossip? Sometimes we like to talk too much. Sometimes our tongues get us into more trouble than any other part of our bodies. Pope Francis has mentioned the sin of gossip several times in the last month, reminding us of just how much damage it has done to the Church. The first time, a few weeks ago, Pope Francis was reminding priests how much damage their gossip has done to the Church. We all need to hear this. I think especially as we celebrate this Feast today of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, we’ve got to know that Jesus can’t be our King if we are still involved with judgment and gossip. Time to use our tongues and voices for better things! We still have a whole lot of people and families who have NOT yet filled out their Fruitful Harvest pledge cards. Please, please, please! I really need your help with this. If you have not filled out your pledge card yet, please stop by the Parish Office as soon as possible and do so. We need every family’s, every household’s, card filled out as soon as possible. We do need you to fill out your card even if you are not making a pledge for this campaign. Thanks in advance for helping us take care of this! Have a great Thanksgiving this week. We do have a special Thanksgiving Mass at 9 am Thursday morning. If you can come and join us, it is one of the best Masses of the year! Everybody is there to say ‘thank you’ to God! In Christ, Fr. Kevin The platypus proves that God has a sense of humor. Welcome! For more than 18 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! Welcome: Eric Richmond, Caitlin Revaine, Ronald & Sara Wood, God Bless you. —Father Kevin Kevin & Chantell McLaughlin, Robert & Barbara Whitten 3 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN November 23, 2014 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe MINISTRY CONTACTS & PHONE NUMBERS Adult Bible Study Altar Rosary Society (Women’s Club) Angel Employment Network (AEN) Baptism Preparation Basic Christian Community (BCC) Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) - Men - Women Confirmation Confraternity of Christian Mothers Cursillo Donuts and Coffee Elijah Cup Eucharistic Adoration Gabriel Project HELP Spring Fling David Bain 575-8945 Ruth Bloss 765-427-9535 Bill Lilegdon 814-5999 Gordon & Mary Ann Smith 843-1339 Melinda Brown 663-7654 Joe Domina 376-2844 Erika Bolcar 239-850-8706 Leslie Mimms 867-3213, ext. 1421 Molly Mirande 867-1848 Tom & Joan Scimeca 571-8510 Toby & Ashley Knott 607-8623 Ann Worcester 669-7095 Carol Alvarez 372-3713 Katie Svec 774-7832 Jennifer Murphy 867-3213, ext. 1225 Tara Quirke 372-6275 Chrissy Davis (Scheduling) 640-8742 Maryann Davis (Donations) 574-274-2144 Dan DeCraene 414-2901 Josh & Miranda Moriarity 614-353-7922 Jeff & Missy Hopp 867-4849 Dave Langenkamp 903-0532 Keltie Domina 569-1258 Joann Wack 773-8449 Jenny Sergio 269-267-5680 Carla Erickson 571-9662 Jolene McCann 566-1760 Kathy Lengerich 896-5898 Jeff Bowen 571-9035 Jim Wack 773-8449 Mark Worcester 753-0944 Leslie Franzen 867-3213, ext. 1209 Mary Cummins 501-0805 Jen Downing 896-9123 Melanie Perhacs 502-2168 Jennifer Taylor 262-443-4126 Dave & Cathy Bain 575-8945 Erika Haahr 402-2260 Kerry Lett 549-5280 BrieAnne Eichorn & Kathryn Niswonger 726-0777 Julie & Marc Weinkauf 669-7096 Jenny Muller 294-3107 Katie Barbour 867-3213, ext. 1139 Connie Anderson 867-3213, ext. 1203 Sara Phillips 371-2130 Dan Dessauer & Joan Scimeca 770-7190 Connie Anderson 867-3213, ext. 1203 Daria Gabany 371-3465 Jennifer Weber 201-0087 Ward LaPaglia 896-9887 Natalie Morrow 765-210-5108 Dan Breen 896-1487 Jenny Sherman & Julie Weinkauf 331-6532 Pat Biddlecombe 867-3213, ext. 1226 Tina Uhland Doug & Valerie Ferry 418-7439 St. Francis Ministry St. Philip Neri Oratorio Technology Support Group Temple Knights of the Holy Eucharist Wedding Coordinator Welcome Committee Young Adult Ministry Youth Ministry HOPE Coordinator TRUTH Coordinator Mike Treida 867-3213 ext. 1229 Corky Aiken 805-8149 Troy Pagán 867-3213, ext. 1218 Deacon Steve Miller 574-1705 Nancy Rumschlag 460-5565 Traci Bubalo 650-4663 Josh & Miranda Moriarity 260-235-0830 867-3213 Eric Gellenbeck 867-3213, ext. 1423 Rob Bloss 867-3213, ext. 1420 Shepherd’s Gate Holy Name Society (Men of Service) Italian Festival Knights of Columbus Landscape Volunteers Librarian/Historian Liturgy Committee Decorating Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Readers Training Readers Scheduling Ministers of Welcome Music Ministry Scheduling Liturgical Ministers Servers for Mass Market Day Marriage Preparation (Pre-Cana, sponsors) Meals Ministry Natural Family Planning - Creighton Model Sympto-Thermal Method Nursery Co-op during Mass Parish Religious Education (PRE) Protocol In-service (All adults working with minors) Respect Life Ministry Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC) ROCK (Reaching Out to College Students) Cub Scouts (www.smgpack152.org) Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Silver Angels (55 & Older) Sisterhood of Marietta Sports Ministry “Is there a place for me to serve here at St. Maria Goretti?” YES!! Following the 5:30 pm Mass, there will be an informal family celebration pitch-in provided in the Parish Hall. If you or your entire family is able to join us, please do so! We'll be sending out an opportunity for your family to RSVP for this event to help us out with our planning. SMG will provide pulled pork and fixin’s along with cake for dessert. Families attending with last name beginning with A-H, please bring an appetizer or salad to share. Families attending with last name beginning with I-P, please bring water or lemonade to share. Families attending with last name beginning with Q-Z, please bring a side dish to share. As we celebrated at Mass the weekend of November 8 & 9, the “church” is more than just a building. It is all of us. We are God’s hands and feet. And yes, we'll be gathered together on December 8 to celebrate the dedication of our beautiful worship space. Please don't forget that it is far more important to celebrate the Parish Family gathered here at 171st & Spring Mill Road— what we have accomplished together in God’s name during the last 10 years, and more importantly, what God will accomplish here in the future. Thank you for your generosity! We could not make this a successful ministry without you. Hobbies: travel, reading, art, golf (Russ), movies, gardening Best things about SMG: Everyone we have met has been friendly and welcoming. There appear to be a lot of opportunities for involvement and becoming part of an active Faith Community. Favorite Prayer: Our Father Favorite Saints: Brenda—St. Anthony Russ—St. Francis We are both interested in learning about St. Maria Goretti. Prayer for the future: Dear God, Please bless us with the will to always do the right things, the desire to seek You in what we do and how we do it, and the passion to follow Your Will, as proclaimed by Your son Jesus Christ. IMMUNIZATION NOTICE FOR KINDERGARTEN AND 5TH GRADE PARENTS Students entering kindergarten in Indiana are now required to receive two Hepatitis A vaccines given at least 6 months apart. This is a new requirement as of 2014. Parents, schedule your kindergarten doctor appointments early, so your child receives these two vaccines by the first day of school in August. 11 year olds entering 6th grade in Indiana are now required to receive the meningitis vaccine and an updated tetnus/ pertussis vaccine known as “Tdap.” The “tetnus booster” cannot be received until after the 10th or 11th birthday (depend-ing on the drug manufacturer). This vaccine has dramatically lowered the number of pertussis cases in middle school and high school students in Indiana. Make sure BOTH vaccines are received BEFORE entering 6th grade. Parents, ask your health care provider for a copy of the immunization record to bring to school. We must have documentation of the vaccine. Questions? Call the school nurse, 896-5582, press 2, or send an e-mail to nurse@smgonline.org. Have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving!
