NE SSE Sunnhordland – from the ocean to the glacier! Sunnhordland has some of the finest and most distinctive scenery in Norway. In a few hours you can travel from open waters and the dramatic ocean through a fascinating fjord landscape and end up on “Norway’s roof”. Sunnhordland’s natural beauty lies ready and waiting for those who are looking for exciting experiences and wish to explore it. 5 The fjord and the islands As you move further inland, a fascinating island and fjord kingdom opens up before your eyes. There are thousands of large and small islands in the region – all of them marked by the friendly and hospitable character of the people of Sunnhordland. Norway’s second longest fjord – the Hardangerfjord – starts in Sunnhordland. This 179-km-long fjord, often called the ”Queen of the Norwegian fjords”, also contributes to the distinctive character of the region. Mountains and glacier Furthest inland in the region, the mighty Sunnhordland mountains tower heavenwards, with some peaks as tall as 1700 metres. The mountains surround Norway’s third largest glacier – Folgefonna. This magnificent glacier is “spread” over the mountains of the Folgefonna peninsula like the icing on a cake. Some of Norway’s most spectacular waterfalls cascade down the mountainsides. Folgefonna National Park, the 25th national park in Norway, was opened here in summer 2005. History Like its distinctive and varied scenery, Sunnhordland also has a varied history for visitors to explore. Sunnhordland was one of the first areas to be settled in Norway, and up through the ages the area has had a special place in the country’s history. That is why Sunnhordland is one of the areas with most ancient monuments and the richest cultural heritage, dating back thousands of years. Fishermen, hunters and boat builders Fishing and hunting have always been important when people have settled in an area. This is also true of Sunnhordland, whose inhabitants have shown great prowess in exploiting the area’s natural resources. Fish from the sea and the fjords and game from bountiful hunting grounds have always been important to people in this part of Hordaland. The people of Sunnhordland have always been a travelling people, and boatbuilding became an important activity early in the area’s history. It is still an important industry, although nowadays they build modern ships and the world’s biggest oil installations. Religion The people of Sunnhordland have always been god-fearing – both in old Norse times and in more recent times. It was no accident, therefore, that Olav Tryggvason choose to go ashore in Moster in 995 AD in order to take over the throne and start the Christianisation of Norway. In 1024, Olav Haraldson arrived in Moster accompanied by Bishop Grimkjell, and oversaw the adoption of Christian law by the Mostratinget assembly. Moster is still home to one of the oldest churches in Norway – Moster Old Church. Erling Skakke built Halsnøy Monastery on the island of Halsnøy, one of the mightiest Augustinian monasteries in Norway’s history. The Viking era and the nobility Given its central location, it was almost inevitable that Sunnhordland would come to occupy a prominent place during the Viking era. The region became a central base for Viking chieftains who often went raiding in the west. There are many places, therefore, where relics of this era can be seen. The aristocracy subsequently made their presence felt and the building of the Barony Rosendal was completed in 1665 – the only one of its kind in Norway. Popular culture However, the most important element in any region is the people themselves. The great activity that has characterised Sunnhordland has of course created the basis for a lively folk culture, which has fortunately been nurtured and maintained throughout the region Sunnhordland. Sunnhordland – from the ocean to the glacier The ocean In the outermost part of the region, the landscape is dominated by the ocean and the coastline. Imagine watching the ocean waves pounding against the rocks at Bømlo or in Austevoll. Or perhaps you find it more tempting to watch the sun go down over the sea from Ryvarden lighthouse? No matter the weather, a trip to these barren but vibrant areas of our region will prove an unforgettable experience. 6 Folgefonna FOLGEFONNA GL ACIER – SAMARBEIDSR ÅDE T FOR SUNNHORDL AND Folgefonna – Norway’s southernmost glacier The area on and around Folgefonna, the third largest mainland glacier, became a national park in 2005. The Folgefonna peninsula offers glacier and wilderness, geological diversity, rich plant and animal life, cultural treasures and a beautiful landscape. The area offers a diverse range of experiences and accommodation. 7 Folgefonna consists of the following: Three plateau glaciers: Northern, Central and Southern Folgefonna. Southern Folgefonna is the third largest glacier in Norway. The highest point is 1,660 metres above sea level. The ice on the Folgefonna peninsula covers an area of approx. 270 km2. The area is divided between five municipalities in Sunnhordland and Hardanger: Kvinnherad, Jondal, Ullensvang, Odda and Etne. Folgefonna Welcome to Folgefonna Information Centre The Centre is situated in the centre of Rosendal, easily accessible by car or the excellent public transport service. Along the way you can see the many exciting and varied restaurants in the region and enjoy tasteful eating experiences. The tiny coastal communities are placed one after another, as pearls on a string between Bergen and Stavanger. It’s been said that people in Norway first settled in Sunnhordland’s region. Before that time, the Vikings ruled the west coast villages, and there is plenty of evidence of that. There have been many battles along the coast, and you can hear and see more about that especially in Fitjar, Bømlo and in Etne. The food experiences at this stretch are amazing and entirely special. If you desire fresh sea food or local raw ingredients combined with the greatest dishes found in this historic scenery, you will find it here. Since time immemorial people have flocked to the area to try their luck at fishing in the sea, rivers and lakes. You can sail on the open sea, navigate through skerries or narrow fjords. If you are lucky, you might even find your own private island! 23 Furthest out towards the ocean, Sunnhordland has a unique coastal landscape. You can sail among islands and islets with the open sea as your nearest neighbour. In the inner part of Sunnhordland you will experience large contrasts compared to the coast. Steep mountains, fjords, glaciers and majestic waterfalls summarize the nature here. If you arrive with or without boat you have the possibility to experience the coastal and fjord paradise in Sunnhordland. There are many options as to renting a boat, or joining a sightseeing tour by boat, whether you wish for calm boat trips in old veteran boats or speed and excitement in a RIB boat. For the person whom wishes to explore the sea and fjord by him/herself, look at next page under Guided fishing trips and boat rental: You will find a list of ports in the municipality’s pages in this guide. It’s been created a boat guide that is available in the tourist information’s around in Fjord Norway. Fishing in Sunnhordland Sunnhordland is paradise for anyone looking to harvest of Nature’s bounty. The open sea which awaits you out at the coast really abounds in fish. There are several places where you can take a trip with local experts to catch really big fish. It is also possible to fish from the shore, of course. Further up the fjord, there are also many good fishing spots where you can fish from the shore or from a boat. There are hundreds of lakes in Sunnhordland, both in lowland areas and up in the mountains. Many of them abound in fish, and there is a really unique atmosphere associated with fishing in these lakes. The quality of the fish is very high – imagine enjoying a tasty meal of fish way up in the mountains while watching the sun setting over the ocean.
