Rick Snyder discusses Dillon, deposition, bankruptcy Oak Park— Gov. Rick Snyder said Saturday he’s moving quickly to hire a State Treasurer, and will decide “fairly soon” whether to disclose donors to his secret NERD Fund. Recommend Tweet The governor addressed those and other issues following an appearance at the Forgotten Harvest food bank in Oak Park to promote volunteerism. Former Treasurer Andy Dillon stepped down Friday amid a messy divorce from Carol Owens-Dillion, releasing a written statement in which he blamed his personal issues for his resignation. Dillon’s decision wasn’t a surprise, Snyder said. “A lot of people knew that Andy had personal issues outside of work,” he said. “It became a point where he thought it best to step down. 121 7 cancer.org/donate No Research Should be Silenced. I wish him the best in his personal life.” When asked if he’s picked Dillon’s replacement, the governor said: “We’re making reasonably good progress on that front, so that’s something hopefully we’ll address fairly near term. It shouldn’t take a significant amount of time.” During a bankruptcy deposition Wednesday, Snyder testified he didn’t know who was donating to his secret NERD Fund. He said Saturday he’s considering disclosing donors to the fund. “It’s a separate legal entity,” he said. “It’s in independent legal entity that has its own board. I know the board; they’re good people, and they went out and raised resources to help offset the burden of government, and actually save our taxpayers money. “If you look at where those expenses go…they’ve really done some good things to help people in terms of reducing government costs,” Snyder said. “For example, I just did a conversation on jobs that was done in Farmington Hills; we were able to webcast it across the state because of Nerd Fund resources. http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20131012/METRO01/310120055/S... member Doug Busch, 50, of Ann Arbor, bag Red Delicious apples from Gavin Farms in West Michigan. / Todd McInturf / The Detroit News via Apartments.com (313) 879-0219 At Millender Center you will have the opportunity to experience Detroit apartment living from two exciting points « Previous Next » in Partnership with Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, third from right, bags Michigan potatoes ... (Todd McInturf / The Detroit News) “We have our constituent services; the people who help answer questions from taxpayers, going out on the road. Their expenses will be paid by the Nerd Fund. Those are great applications that otherwise would be a cost to government or we wouldn’t be able to do.” When asked if donors to the fund should be disclosed, Snyder said: “That’s something we’re making a review of, and I think you’ll have us giving some feedback on that going forward fairly soon.” Snyder also praised the work of Detroit’s Emergency Financial Manager Kevyn Orr. “We are making progress,” he said. “These are difficult issues, and if you stop and think about it, we’re dealing with 60 years of mess, so you don’t solve those things overnight. But there are very good signs of positive progress: things like having the new police chief; the Detroit Detention Center; progress on the public safety front, which is critical.” Prior to the interview Saturday, Snyder worked alongside dozens of volunteers in the Forgotten Harvest warehouse, packing apples, potatoes and carrots, which were donated from farms and grocery stores to help feed hungry people in southeast Michigan. “This is food that otherwise would have been thrown away,” Forgotten Harvest CEO Susan Goodell said. “Now, it’ll go out to soup kitchens, shelters — people who really need it.” Forgotten Harvest facilitates the donation of about 140,000 pounds of food each day, Goodall said. “That’s roughly about 180,000 meals,” she said. “About 27 percent of the children in Michigan live in poverty and are hungry, so while we’re proud of what we’ve been able to do, we’d like to do a whole lot more.” ghunter@detroitnews.com (313) 222-2134 Join the Conversation The Detroit News aims to provide a forum that fosters smart, civil discussions on the news and events that we cover. Does that mean he lied earlier? He didn't specifically say that when I interviewed him, but that was the impression I got. Which has left his detractors little to use against him. As a results it has led to desperate attempts to derail with ridicules vexatious lawsuits that have cost Joe taxpayer millions. Plus the stone walling and stalling which in itself will have consequences that will effect the public at large. With all this reckless behavior, I wonder if those who are engaged in such activities have considered the blow back and the considerable harm in will bring to them ???
