Who’sNews
I am a great fan of Scottish author
Ian Rankin. I was surprised to see
how similar his book Bleeding Hearts
is to the TV series Burn Notice, even
with the same main character: Michael
Weston. Was the series modeled after
Rankin’s book?
Noreen M. Knox
Pleasant Valley, N.Y.
Afraid not. Burn Notice creator Matt Nix
hasn’t heard of Rankin’s book. “I took my
passion for the details
of the life of a spy and
the psychology of a spy
and ferried it to a P.I.
DONOVAN
show structure,” Nix
AS WESTON
says. The fifth season
of Burn Notice finds spy-turned-investigator Michael Weston (Jeffrey Donovan) working with the CIA as his relationship with former IRA operative and
co-worker Fiona Glenanne (Gabrielle
Anwar) continues to develop.

Jason Momoa is going from the brutish

What are the stars of the series
Supernatural doing now? I just

We’re sure Jensen Ackles and

love knowing they have

series is now in its seventh

Every person and diagnosis is different, so while some evidencebased treatment options may work
for one person, they may not be
right for you. Once you narrow
down your options, don’t forget to
ask about side effects.
Have a monitoring system.
Once you’ve started treatment, ask

Give your wardrobe
a brand-new start
A fashion expert shows how
to make everything in your
closet a ‘10.’ BY JILL MARTIN
DID YOU WAKE UP this morning,
stand in front of your closet and
think, “I have nothing to wear”?
You’re not alone. But the problem
isn’t that you have too little to
wear, it’s that you’ve got too much
jammed in your closet. In the closets I’ve gone through, I’ve found
that most people don’t wear 75%
of the clothes they own!
If your closet is overstuffed,
chances are you can’t even see
what’s in there, so your nicer
pieces get overlooked, or maybe
they’re crushed and wrinkled. Especially when you’re in a hurry,
you tend to grab whatever is closest, even if it doesn’t have you
looking your best. Having only
perfect pieces in your wardrobe
— and fewer of them — means
that those will be the ones you
grab and they will have space to
be treated with care, so they and
you will always be a “10.”
As a contributor on NBC’s
Today show, I help transform
women who are looking for a
brand-new start each Friday on
our plaza “Ambush Makeover.”
Many of them tell me that when
they return home, they immediately clear out anything in their
closet that is not fabulous.
With our new book, I Have
Nothing to Wear: A Painless 12Step Program to Declutter Your
Life So You Never Have to Say
This Again!, my co-author, Dana
Ravich, and I offer a program so
you will never have to say those
five dreaded words again. Here’s
some of what we advise:
WEED OUT YOUR WARDROBE
Be ruthless. If you haven’t
worn it in a year, out it goes. If the
item is stained, torn or worn, toss
it. If it doesn’t fit perfectly, don’t
let it hang around.
Divvy up the discard pile into
clothes you’re donating, clothes
you’re consigning and clothes that
are doomed to the rag pile. And
ditch those that still might fit and
are still in good condition but that
you don’t wear anymore for various reasons. Unless you have a
really strong sentimental attachment to an item (such as your
wedding dress), get rid of it — and
you are allowed only a few sentimental pieces.
ASSESS YOUR ASSETS
Now,
let’s
discuss
what’s left and what needs to be
added. Consider your personality,
lifestyle and body type. These
three components are what determine your style, and ultimately
your “uniform.”
Your personality naturally
gravitates toward a particular
look — bohemian or preppy, classic or fashionista. Your lifestyle

that has helped make her a star. Now, at 39, she’s
also becoming a brand. Next month, she launches
her own line of clothes at Kmart inspired by her
own fun, sexy style: jeans, dresses, colorful tops,
bold jewelry and leggings she layers under skirts.
(“I can go shorter and I don’t feel as naked.”)
But for Vergara, it’s not all about being chic, or
even sexy. The key, she says, is to feel comfortable in her own skin.
“I love jeans, leggings and tunics,” she says,
snacking on tea-sized sandwiches. “Comfortable
things.”
Her weakness? “I spend a lot of money on
bags and shoes,” she confesses in a refrain
many women can surely relate to. “But
my clothes — I wear things I have
found all over the world that don’t
have to be expensive.”
Over time, her style rules have
changed. “In my 20s, I would
have on a miniskirt and the
boobs,” she laughs, gesturing comic proportions with
her hands. “Now, if I’m doing something short, I try to
cover up [on top]. I’m almost 40, so
I had to evolve — it’s natural.”
Date nights with boyfriend Nick Loeb
mean dressing “sexy, of course,” she says with
a grin. “I love tight dresses.” But “I don’t do now
tight and short. I do tight and long.”
One item paparazzi will never catch her in:
cutoff shorts. “My son’s friends and girlfriends
are wearing them!” the Emmy-nominated actress exclaims. “I don’t feel it’s right.”
The item she covets most this fall?
A motorcycle jacket. “I try to always buy a new one because they

will lend itself to a
certain way of dressing — a corporate
job, a creative job or
running around with
the kids all day. And
your body type will
determine the kind
of pieces that flatter
your figure. Adding
all three pieces of the
puzzle will help you
develop your “uniform” — the outfits
that truly express
you. These items
should make up most
of your wardrobe.
And you don’t
need a lot: You know
you wear the same
two pairs of jeans
all the time. The
majority of what you
own should be the
pieces that express
you, flatter you and are functional
for your life. Figure out what
colors work for you and stick to
your palette. Buy colors because
they are “you,” not because they
are “in.”
Accessories can make or break
an outfit, so invest a little more in
a great pair of shoes and buy a bag
you can carry all the time. 6

ARICEPT 23 mg. For moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease.
To learn about a 30 day
FREE Trial Offer visit
aricept.com
You’ve shared so much with your loved one through the years. While you’re realistic about the nature of Alzheimer’s, as
their caregiver, you want to do what you can. If your loved one is taking ARICEPT (donepezil HCl) 10 mg, ask the doctor
if ARICEPT 23 mg may help.
ARICEPT 23 mg was compared to ARICEPT 10 mg in a large clinical study of patients with moderate to severe
Alzheimer’s disease. ARICEPT 23 mg showed improvement over ARICEPT 10 mg on cognitive symptoms, though it did
not show improvement on overall patient functioning. In the study, more people who took ARICEPT 23 mg experienced
increased side effects.
ARICEPT is thought to work by increasing the amount of acetylcholine, allowing more of this important chemical
to remain in the brain.
It’s important to remember that while ARICEPT may treat the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, it is not a cure.
All patients with Alzheimer’s disease will get worse over time, even if they take ARICEPT 23 mg.
Ask the doctor today about giving your loved one ARICEPT 23 mg.
Learn more at aricept.com
INDICATION AND DOSING
ARICEPT® (donepezil HCl) is a prescription medicine
to treat mild, moderate and severe Alzheimer’s disease.
Before starting on ARICEPT 23 mg/day, patients should
be on ARICEPT 10 mg/day for at least 3 months. The
starting dose of ARICEPT is 5 mg/day and can be increased
to 10 mg/day after 4–6 weeks. Please take ARICEPT as
prescribed by the doctor.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
ARICEPT is not for everyone, including people who are
allergic to any ingredients in ARICEPT or to medicines
that contain piperidines.
Tell the doctor if your loved one takes nonprescription
or prescription medicines, including those used to treat
Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease; anticholinergic
medicines, such as allergy or cold medicine; medicines to
treat bladder or bowel spasms; or certain asthma medicines.
“I want to give to the woman who
taught me to savor every moment.”
Ask the doctor about giving your
loved one ARICEPT 23 mg.
ARICEPT may cause slow heartbeat and fainting.
This happens more often in people with heart problems.
Call the doctor right away if the patient faints while
taking ARICEPT. People may also have seizures while
taking ARICEPT. They may also have difficulty passing
urine. Lung problems, including asthma, may worsen
with the use of ARICEPT. Tell the doctor that the patient
takes ARICEPT before they have any procedure that
may require anesthesia, including dental and medical
procedures or surgery.
People at risk for stomach ulcers or who take certain other
medicines, such as aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs (NSAIDs), should tell their doctor because serious
stomach problems, such as bleeding, may get worse.
In a study, more side effects were seen with ARICEPT 23 mg
than with ARICEPT 10 mg. Many more people taking
ARICEPT 23 mg experienced nausea and vomiting than
those taking ARICEPT 10 mg. These side effects may
get better after the patient takes ARICEPT for a while.
Other side effects that were seen more often with
ARICEPT 23 mg were stomach ulcers, gastrointestinal
bleeding, and weight loss. People of lower weight (less than
121 lbs) may have increased nausea, vomiting, and weight
loss when taking ARICEPT 23 mg.
Other side effects of ARICEPT may include diarrhea,
difficulty sleeping, vomiting, or muscle cramps. Some people
may feel tired or may have loss of appetite.
You are encouraged to report negative
side effects to the FDA. Visit fda.gov/medwatch or
call 1-800-FDA-1088.
Please see important Patient Information on next page.

ARICEPT is a prescription medicine to treat mild, moderate and severe Alzheimer’s
disease. ARICEPT can help with mental function and with doing daily tasks. ARICEPT
does not work the same in all people. Some people may:
• Seem much better
• Get better in small ways or stay the same
• Get worse over time but slower than expected

ARICEPT does not cure Alzheimer’s disease. All patients with Alzheimer’s disease get
worse over time, even if they take ARICEPT.
ARICEPT has not been approved as a treatment for any medical condition in children.
Who should not take ARICEPT?
The patient should not take ARICEPT if allergic to any of the ingredients in ARICEPT or
to medicines that contain piperidines. Ask the patient’s doctor if you are not sure. See
the end of this leaflet for a list of ingredients in ARICEPT.
What should I tell the doctor before the patient takes ARICEPT?
Tell the doctor about all the patient’s present or past health problems.
Include:
• Present pregnancy or plans to
• Any heart problems including

• Difficulty passing urine
women who are breast-feeding.
• Liver or kidney problems
• Trouble swallowing tablets
Tell the doctor about all the medicines the patient takes, including prescription
and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. ARICEPT and other
medicines may affect each other.
Be particularly sure to tell the doctor if the patient takes aspirin or medicines called
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). There are many NSAID medicines, both
prescription and non-prescription. Ask the doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure if any
of the patient’s medicines are NSAIDs. Taking NSAIDs and ARICEPT together may make
the patient more likely to get stomach ulcers.
ARICEPT taken with certain medicines used for anesthesia may cause side effects. Tell
the responsible doctor or dentist that the patient takes ARICEPT before the patient has:
• surgery
• medical procedures
• dental surgery or procedures.
Know the medicines that the patient takes. Keep a list of all the patient’s medicines.
Show it to the doctor or pharmacist before the patient starts a new medicine.
How should the patient take ARICEPT?
• Give ARICEPT exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Do not stop ARICEPT or change
the dose yourself. Talk with the doctor first.
• Give ARICEPT one time each day. ARICEPT can be taken with or without food.
• ARICEPT 23 mg tablets should be swallowed whole without the tablets being split,
crushed or chewed.
• ARICEPT ODT melts on the tongue. The patient should drink some water after the
tablet melts.
• If you miss giving the patient a dose of ARICEPT, just wait. Give only the next dose
at the usual time. Do not give 2 doses at the same time.
• If ARICEPT is missed for 7 days or more, talk with the doctor before starting again.
• If the patient takes too much ARICEPT at one time, call the doctor or poison
control center, or go to the emergency room right away.
What are the possible side effects of ARICEPT?
ARICEPT may cause the following serious side effects:
• slow heartbeat and fainting. This happens more often in people with heart
problems. Call the doctor right away if the patient faints while taking ARICEPT.
• more stomach acid. This raises the chance of ulcers and bleeding, especially when
taking ARICEPT 23 mg. The risk is higher for patients who had ulcers, or take
aspirin or other NSAIDs.
• worsening of lung problems in people with asthma or other lung disease.
• seizures.
• difficulty passing urine.
Call the doctor right away if the patient has:
• bowel movements or stools that

coffee grounds.
The most common side effects of ARICEPT are:
• nausea
• muscle cramps
• feeling tired
• diarrhea
• not wanting to eat
• not sleeping well
• vomiting
These side effects may get better after the patient takes ARICEPT for a while. This
is not a complete list of side effects with ARICEPT. For more information, ask the
doctor or pharmacist.
Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to
FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
How should ARICEPT be stored ?
Store ARICEPT at room temperature between 59° to 86°F (15° to 30°C).
Keep ARICEPT and all medicines out of the reach of children.
General information about ARICEPT
Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in this
Patient Information Leaflet. Do not use ARICEPT for a condition for which it was not
prescribed. Do not give ARICEPT to people other than the patient, even if they have the
same symptoms as the patient, as it may harm them.
This leaflet summarizes the most important information about ARICEPT. If you would
like more information talk with the patient’s doctor. You can ask your pharmacist or
doctor for information about ARICEPT that is written for health professionals. For more
information, go to www.ARICEPT.com, or call 1-800-760-6029.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SYMBICORT
Important Safety Information About SYMBICORT for Asthma
SYMBICORT contains formoterol, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA).
LABA medicines such as formoterol increase the risk of death from asthma
problems. It is not known whether budesonide, the other medicine in SYMBICORT,
reduces the risk of death from asthma problems seen with formoterol.
SYMBICORT should be used only if your health care provider decides that your
asthma is not well controlled with a long-term asthma control medicine, such as an
inhaled corticosteroid, or that your asthma is severe enough to begin treatment
with SYMBICORT.
If you are taking SYMBICORT, see your health care provider if your asthma does not improve
or gets worse. It is important that your health care provider assess your asthma control on a
regular basis. Your doctor will decide if it is possible for you to stop taking SYMBICORT and
start taking a long-term asthma control medicine without loss of asthma control.
Children and adolescents who take LABA medicines may have an increased risk of being
hospitalized for asthma problems.
SYMBICORT does not replace rescue inhalers for sudden asthma symptoms.
Be sure to tell your health care provider about all your health conditions, including heart
conditions or high blood pressure, and all medicines you may be taking. Some patients taking
SYMBICORT may experience increased blood pressure, heart rate, or change in heart rhythm.
Do not use SYMBICORT more often than prescribed. While taking SYMBICORT, never use
another medicine containing a LABA for any reason. Ask your health care provider or
pharmacist if any of your other medicines are LABA medicines, as using too much LABA may
cause chest pain, increase in blood pressure, fast and irregular heartbeat, headache, tremor,
and nervousness.
improve lung function, helping patients breathe better all day and night.†
Once your asthma is well controlled, your doctor will decide if you can stop
taking SYMBICORT without loss of control and may prescribe a long-term
asthma control medicine such as an inhaled corticosteroid.

of SYMBICORT FREE!*
OFFER EXPIRES: 03/31/2012.
For new SYMBICORT patients only. Not valid on refills.
* Subject to eligibility rules. Restrictions apply.
Patients taking SYMBICORT should call their health care provider or get emergency
medical care:
• if you experience serious allergic reactions including rash, hives, swelling of the face,
mouth and tongue, and breathing problems.
• if you think you are exposed to infections such as chicken pox or measles, or if you have any
signs of infection. You may have a higher chance of infection.
• if you experience an increase in wheezing right after taking SYMBICORT, eye problems
including glaucoma and cataracts, decreases in bone mineral density, swelling of blood
vessels (signs include a feeling of pins and needles or numbness of arms or legs, flu like
symptoms, rash, pain, and swelling of the sinuses), decrease in blood potassium and
increase in blood sugar levels.
If you are switching to SYMBICORT from an oral corticosteroid, follow your health care
provider’s instructions to avoid serious health risks when you stop using oral corticosteroids.
Common side effects include nose and throat irritation, headache, upper respiratory tract
infection, sore throat, sinusitis, stomach discomfort, flu, back pain, nasal congestion, vomiting,
and thrush in the mouth and throat.
Approved Uses for SYMBICORT for Asthma
SYMBICORT is a medicine for the treatment of asthma for people 12 years and older whose

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT
INFORMATION I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
SYMBICORT?
People with asthma who take long-acting
beta2-agonist (LABA) medicines, such
as formoterol (one of the medicines in
SYMBICORT), have an increased risk of
death from asthma problems. It is not
known whether budesonide, the other
medicine in SYMBICORT, reduces the risk
of death from asthma problems seen with
formoterol.
SYMBICORT should be used only if your
health care provider decides that your
asthma is not well controlled with a longterm asthma control medicine, such as an
inhaled corticosteroid, or that your asthma
is severe enough to begin treatment with
SYMBICORT.
Talk with your health care provider about this risk
and the benefits of treating your asthma with
SYMBICORT.
If you are taking SYMBICORT, see your health
care provider if your asthma does not improve or
gets worse. It is important that your health care
provider assess your asthma control on a regular
basis.Your doctor will decide if it is possible for
you to stop taking SYMBICORT and start taking a
long-term asthma control medicine without loss
of asthma control.
Get emergency medical care if:
■ breathing problems worsen quickly, and
■ you use your rescue inhaler medicine, but it
does not relieve your breathing problems.
Children and adolescents who take LABA
medicines may be at increased risk of being
hospitalized for asthma problems.
WHAT IS SYMBICORT?
SYMBICORT is an inhaled prescription medicine
used for asthma and chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains two
medicines:
Budesonide (the same medicine found in
Pulmicort Flexhaler™, an inhaled corticosteroid).
Inhaled corticosteroids help to decrease
inflammation in the lungs. Inflammation in the
lungs can lead to asthma symptoms
■ Formoterol (the same medicine found in
Foradil® Aerolizer®). LABA medicines are used
in patients with COPD and asthma to help
the muscles in the airways of your lungs stay
relaxed to prevent asthma symptoms, such
as wheezing and shortness of breath. These
symptoms can happen when the muscles
in the airways tighten. This makes it hard to
breathe, which, in severe cases, can cause
breathing to stop completely if not treated
right away
SYMBICORT is used for asthma and chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease as follows:
Asthma
SYMBICORT is used to control symptoms of
asthma and prevent symptoms such as wheezing
in adults and children ages 12 and older.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
COPD is a chronic lung disease that includes
chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both.
SYMBICORT 160/4.5 mcg is used long-term, two
times each day, to help improve lung function for
better breathing in adults with COPD.

Y
can improve
your health. Did you know
it can build a good mood, too?
Absolutely, says registered
dietitian Joy Bauer, author of

treat health concerns.
Good mood
foods stabilize
your
blood
sugar, which
helps prevents
spikes
and
plunges that
can leave you
irritable and cranky.
On your plate, focus on highquality carbs (fruit, vegetables,
whole grains) and high-quality
protein (lean meat, dried
beans). Important nutrients are
brain-influencing omega-3 fatty
acids and vitamins D and B.
Bauer offers these specific
foods as mood-boosters:
Oatmeal. Soluble fiber and

Lentils. Good carbs, good
