Peter Weller, the actor who played the cyborg crime fighter, has teamed with Forgotten Harvest to raise money to feed Detroit's needy. Weller appears in a nearly two-minute public service announcement on YouTube encouraging people to donate to the nonprofit that provides meals for thousands of Detroit area residents. Advertisement "The real story of RoboCop is a message about the return and renewal of life and it all takes place in Detroit," Weller says in the video posted today. "A civic and public emblem of RoboCop might symbolize those same values for the Motor City." In February, an online campaign succeeded in raising $50,000 to erect a RoboCop statue in Detroit. The campaign was started after Mayor Dave Bing responded to a suggestion on Twitter about a statue in honor of the 1987 movie. The tweet attracted national media attention, and movie fans and art fanatics raised the funds within six days. Later that month, donations began pouring in for Forgotten Harvest after Hollywood heavyweights urged fans to turn their RoboCop statue fundraising frenzy toward another cause.
