IN MEMORY OF JON J. WAGNER
The calling hours, funeral and burial were surreal. Afterward, Germania, beautifully decorated as
a Biergarten, was filled with so many of the people whose lives were touched by Jon; his Spaten
stein was filled and placed at the club’s entrance; his bar stool was draped with a Bavarian flag
cloth; the family and friends had a Jägermeister toast in his honor; and toward the end of a long
afternoon Das Boot was filled with beer and passed around the Hall in his honor. Memories,
laughter and tears were shared. Jon had the power of making a strong, immediate impression and
has left a void in the lives of his family and friends and in the community in which he lived and
devoted his life to, and there is a huge void at Germania. Jon served our club as President from
2007 until his death; in addition to holding his leadership position, he was the club’s webmaster, a
member of the Gala Committee, and Chairperson of the Germania Oktoberfest (an event he
molded and nurtured and was always looking for ways to improve it and have it be more successful year after year).
We will miss his thoughtful letters to the members submitted to your newsletter. Anyone who knew Jon at the club
knows he loved the German culture, and he was dedicated to the club and its purposes and respected its history of
162 years. Jon loved the German food, German beer, German bands, our club events, the members, the Kinderchor
and the Kindergruppe. Jon took the feelings, suggestions and concerns of Germania’s daughter clubs and all of its
members to heart, and he worked hard for success, transparency, unity and Gemütlichkeit at Germania. He knew the
value of the ‘volunteer’ and appreciated and respected each member that volunteered no matter how small or large
the job. Without ever having to quote it, he impressed upon the members that there is no “I” in “TEAM” and he lead
by example. When Jon looked you sincerely in the eye and asked you to take on a task at the club it was difficult to
say no; he had a way of making you want to help. You could always count on Jon to be playfully sarcastic, and he
loved to tell stories and share his memories. He had a boyish grin, and was young at heart, and he was young.
Anyone who knew Jon knows that he was extremely proud of his family and had overwhelming love for them.
During the news coverage many public figures remembered Jon fondly. Here are two commentaries taken from the
Poughkeepsie Journal: “Jon Wagner committed himself to a lifetime of public service,” Dutchess County Executive
Marc Molinaro said in a statement. “Jon served his community with decency and distinction. The Town of LaGrange
and all of Dutchess County was made better because of his service.” Also taken from the Poughkeepsie Journal, “His
impact was great,” Town of LaGrange Deputy Supervisor Joseph Luna said. “He was a fantastic leader.” We could
not agree more.
Melissa, Matt, Erin, Dan, Erik, Jeanne, Brian, Annette, and the entire Wagner family… thank you for sharing Jon
with Germania. We extend our deepest sympathy to you during this difficult time.

same date, 8/4/12, has regrettably been cancelled.
GERMANIA’S GARDENS are a beautiful example of how our volunteers
are so vital to the club. We do not always know who they are so we can
thank them… they donate beautiful plants, soil and mulch; they come on
their own to plant and weed and water; and they do not seek recognition. I
would love to name all the volunteers that have brought the beautiful flowers
to Germania’s front yard and
entrance over the years so that you
could thank them the next time you
see them at the club… but someone
would surely be missed. So, for now,
we will just give them a generic
“thank you” in the newsletter.
However, one of these volunteers just
happened to be at the club when I
had my camera, so I am placing her
picture in this issue, although I know
she is not alone in the efforts to

is almost as big as she is and I wish I had a

All Germania's Soccer teams end their seasons as Champions! The Over 40 team has
once again won their league championship. The Over 30 team, in addition to winning
the State Cup Championship, has won its league title again. The Open team has won its
end of year league tournament and is currently in the Finals of the Champions end of year tournament.
This is a money tournament where the winner takes $3500! Good luck to the Open team!
The Soccer club's annual golf tournament was a great this year. Make plans to join us next year to play golf, eat good
food and win prizes. Be on the lookout for another big screen TV raffle coming up. Tickets will be available at the bar.
This year's winner was Jason Lipka who won the raffle during the final of the Euro 2012 finals.
Germania and the soccer club would like to thank new Open team player Colin Hodge for cleaning the beer line taps at
the club and also at the shelter. Colin's expertise in working on tap lines is greatly appreciated.

SCHUHPLATTLER NEWS
GERMANIA ALMRAUSCH SCHUHPLATTLER VEREIN would like to thank Dave Yearack
for all his dedication and hard work as our Vorplattler (Dance Leader) from January 2008 until this past
May 2012. Dave continues to be an active dance member and co-director of our Kindergruppe. Robb
Rose has assumed the duties of the Vorplattler of our group, and we welcome him back to that position, one he held
for ten years over a sixteen-year period of time. We have moved four Kindergruppe members into the adult group as
Junior Members and are very proud of the improvements we see in their performances as they learn…
congratulations Janneke Doedee, Alex Reichert, Rachael Rose and Gregory Wuytack. Even after their move, the
Kindergruppe still has five couples and one family making inquiry. Nothing makes us more proud than fostering an
interest in Schuhplattler dancing and German culture to the young kids, with hope that they will continue these
traditions and have richer lives because of the experiences they have and friendships they create. We welcome new
members of all ages and invite you to join us anytime to see what the dances are like and to meet us.
Germania held its annual meeting and elections this past June and Almrausch is proud to have representation on the
Board with Mike Reichert serving another term as Financial Secretary and Robb Rose is a new Trustee, a position he
also held a few years ago. Thank you Mike, Robb and the entire Germania Board, for making a commitment to the
continued success of our mother club, Germania of Poughkeepsie.
Although we do not currently have any rehearsals scheduled, we plan to start practicing soon for the Oktoberfest
season which will kick off this year with Germania’s Oktoberfest September 7 th – 9th. We are also anticipating our
entertainment of festival goers at Tymor Park, Barryville, Hunter Mountain and Mt. Carmel Church.
In closing, we extend our deepest sympathy to the Wagner families on the loss of Jon Wagner. He was a great
Germania President… strong, dedicated, committed, fair and honorable. He supported Germania Almrausch and
enjoyed our dancing; he was a friend to all of us, and he will be greatly missed, and never forgotten. Rest in Peace
Jon!

A line of 2,569 enthusiastic people danced the Hokey Pokey for more than five minutes at Walkway Over the
Hudson State Historic Park on Saturday, June 9th to establish a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORD. Creating a line
stretching more than a mile across the world's longest elevated pedestrian park, a diverse array of dancers came from
throughout the country to participate in the whimsical fundraiser to support the nonprofit group, Walkway Over the
Hudson. Shortly after participants completed the dance, Guinness World Records adjudicator Danny Girton Jr.
emerged from a tent at the Walkway's Center Observation Area and pronounced a new world record for the longest
line of dancers! (the forgoing was taken from a Walkway News Press Release) Among the dancers were ELLEN
SCHOENFELD, KAREN SCHOENFELD and ANDREA MASRI (daughters of Karl-Heinz and Lore) and
JEANETTE LUMB (daughter of Daniel & Marie and granddaughter of Janett & Otto Frank), and Honorary
President, JANETT FRANK. Congratulations to the above that took a chance on the weather and had a real fun time
breaking the record.
Congratulations to Treasurer, SHERWOOD KREIG, from his fellow Board Members as he
celebrates his 80th birthday on August 10th!

NOTICE TO OKTOBERFEST VOLUNTEERS:
As we plan the 5th annual Oktoberfest we feel good that we now have a good idea what works and what still needs
improvement. You have a direct effect on the success of the festival. Germania cannot run the festival without its
volunteers. We have had in the past and NEED OVER 150 VOLUNTEERS, which is a lot to manage. So with that in
mind, we have put together this article of general information and club rules for the festival volunteers.
CHECK IN: All volunteers will check in at the clubhouse, not at the festival entrance as we have done in the past. All
volunteers, regardless of where work assignment is, must check in upon arrival so we know you have arrived so that the
committee may ascertain any shortage in coverage, and also so you can collect your wristband for free admission to the
festival and your food/drink voucher which is our thanks for your help. Vouchers can be used any festival day regardless
of which day earned.
Please ARRIVE at assigned work area 15 minutes before your shift starts to receive instructions and allow for a smooth
transition at shift change. For any member generously working double and triple shifts, please leave one area on time and
move quickly to next area so committee is not scrambling to find coverage for what appears to be a ‘no show’.
For the few that cannot commit in advance, you may sign up on any festival day to FILL IN VACANCIES but you may
not volunteer to hang around and help wherever.
Please TRAIN the next shift in your work area: review the how, where, when and why with them. Especially since at this
writing there will not be a coordinator overseeing the shift changes or briefing the volunteers of their duties.
DO NOT SEND COWORKERS AWAY from work area during slow times because crowds come suddenly and in spurts.
DO NOT ACCEPT CASH PAYMENTS for food or for beverage. Do not sell food or beverage unless guest has a
WRISTBAND; nicely direct guest back to the admission tent if they do not have a wristband.
SINGERS AND DANCERS may seek coverage during performance times from co-worker, floater or member that is not
working and must not otherwise leave assigned work area unattended or short staffed.
Volunteers are asked to take a MEAL BREAK BEFORE OR AFTER SHIFT, not during. For any member generously
working double and triple shifts, please utilize the floater to take a quick meal break or consult with committee to plan a
meal break.
Volunteers are asked to consider the club’s liability risks and impression given to guests and not drink ALCOHOL during
their shift. A volunteer absolutely may not drink alcohol while working the beer truck, parking cars, or operating a utility
vehicle or kitchen equipment.
HELP OVERSEE your entire work area. For example, bake sale volunteers should refill the nearby condiment and utensil
table as needed; everyone should clean messes and garbage found around work area; and if supplies run low seek out a
committee member for assistance.
KITCHEN volunteers will be required to wear rubber gloves. Please do not wear an open toe shoe, and long hair must be
tied back. The club will have disposable aprons and limited cloth aprons, so feel free to bring your own kitchen apron if
you have one and want to.
Thank you to everyone for volunteering your time to the club’s most important annual fundraiser, and taking the time to
read through this article. Thank you also to the members in past years who have jumped in to help when needed during
busy or chaotic times even though they were not signed up to volunteer.
Please attend the Oktoberfest Volunteer Orientation Meeting on August 22, 2012 at 7 pm at Germania Hall.

NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY
ALL DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE, and there have been calendar changes.
ALL EVENTS ARE RUN BY MEMBER VOLUNTEERS - THESE EVENTS CANNOT TAKE PLACE WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT!
Pictured is a gathering of friends at Germania’s Friday
dinner July 13, 2012: sitting are Otto Clausen, Herby
Puberl, and Grete Licis; standing are Gary & Ursula who
reside in Vermont, and Karen Rose.
Editor’s note: After the 2010 Christkindlmarkt, a small 4x6”
photo album was donated to hold pictures from the event and is at
the clubhouse. If anyone has duplicate pictures from any event at
Germania, no matter what year, please bring them to the club and
put them in the photo album as there are several pages available
that need memories for sharing! Many thanks.
