175 antique tractors ready to ride
GEORGE PHELPS, 78
Pastime kept antique clocks ticking
BY BETSIE FREEMAN
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER
Omaha chemist George Phelps
loved to collect and fix antique
clocks and watches in his spare
time.
“He got very
good at that,” said
his wife, Janis
Phelps. “He had
his own repair
shop at home.”
He became so
George
proficient that he
Phelps
received a fellowship from the
National Association of Watch and
Clock Collectors.
Phelps, who died recently at
age 78 from complications after a
stroke, also gave speeches about
antique clocks. He collected antique cameras as well.
He was born in Lexington, Mo.,
in 1935. He received a degree in
chemistry from the University of
Wichita, now Wichita State University, where he met his wife. They
married in 1957.
Phelps served in the U.S. Army
at Fort Bliss, Texas, and moved
to Omaha when he got a job at
Nebraska Testing Laboratories.
He eventually bought the company
with two partners, his wife said.
He opened Phelps Environmental, a consulting firm, in 1996. While
there, he got his pilot’s license and
flew for the company when it had
out-of-town jobs.
“He loved it,” Janis Phelps said.
Phelps also served as Big Chief
of the Tribe of Yessir, a Chamber
of Commerce group dedicated to

promoting good will in the business
community.
The couple moved to the Skyline
Woods neighborhood of Elkhorn
about 26 years ago, and he was on
the SID board there until last year.
As an officer, he answered lots of
homeowner questions, his wife
said.
“He was the kind of person
always willing to help somebody,”
she said.
He died April 8 at the Josie Harper Hospice House. A visitation will
be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of the Cross, 1517 S.
