12 ISLIP BULLETIN - SEPTEMBER 26, 2013
Hoist the Union
Jack
ISLIP—On Sept. 12, town officials celebrated a longstanding
annual tradition of acknowledging
Islip’s sister city Islip, England, located in the region of Northamptonshire. The town was the ancestral homeland of William Nicoll who
in 1683 was the first patentee of the
land on this side of the pond that
he named Islip.
Every year on July 4, the village
of Islip, England flies the U.S. Town
of Islip flag over its town hall to
celebrate the friendship between
the two communities. And so Islip
Town (U.S.) returns the favor.
This summer, Islip, England Supervisor Tom Love visited Islip Town
Hall and presented various artifacts
and historical gifts to signify the
ties between the two cities.
Pictured here are (left to right)
are: Councilman Steve Flotteron,
civic leader Kay Erwood, Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt,
Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, and
Jill Edenie, a local Islip resident and
former Brit.

the event in the hospital’s Patio Café. In addition, New
York Blood Center mobile units will be available in the

which be held at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey on Feb.
2. All successful donors between now and Jan. 17 will be
entered into a sweepstakes for one pair of tickets to the
Super Bowl. The more you donate, the more times you
will be entered
Someone in this country needs a life-saving transfusion every three seconds. New York Blood Center requires more than 2,000 volunteer blood donations each
day to meet the transfusion needs of patients in close to
200 regional hospitals. Each donation of blood can help
save up to three lives.
Nearly everyone between the ages of 17 (16 with
parents’ written permission) and 75 meet all donor eligibility requirements. Donors must weigh a minimum
of 110 pounds and be in good health. Each participant
should bring valid identification. People can safely donate blood every 8 weeks. Sixty percent of Americans
are eligible to donate blood, but, on average only five
