JOHN DERMODY John Dermody, a long time region resident and teacher passed away June 29, 2014 in San Clemente, CA. John was a teacher and coach for many years at Bishop Noll and TF South. John was a graduate of Purdue University and an avid fan of all sports. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Arlene of 25 years; and his brother, Dick. He is survived by Sandy, his beloved wife of the last 30 years; his sons: Mike and Time; two step children: Scott and Bonnie; and his grandchildren: Monica, Justin, Josie, Keaton, Zoe, and Robin. Bogue was passionate about education, politics and music. “He never stopped learning and he always encouraged everyone else to keep learning,” said Gretchen Maguire, his daughter. “Even in his last year he was learning new software, reading academic journals, writing and learning how to use an iPad.” Mentoring his graduate students through their doctoral studies was most rewarding for him, Maguire said. He taught at least one class annually until quitting at 92 to finish his book on demography, which was published this year. In the 1970s and ‘80s Bogue held workshops for educators and health ministers from countries who were facing problems with health, population, poverty and teenage pregnancy. Bogue, who always voted, believed government should improve public education and health, care for the aged and aid the struggling poor. CHESTER F. CZUBALA CEDAR LAKE, IN Chester F. Czubala, age 86, of Cedar Lake, IN, formerly of Hammond, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2014 at his residence. HIGHLAND, IN March 21, 1915- July 6, 2014 Frank J. Hoffman Sr. passed away July 6, 2014. Frank lived in his home in Highland until his death at the age of 99. He died at Munster Community Hospital surrounded by family. Frank was born to the late Frank and Mary Hoffman in East Chicago. He married Mary T. Matusik in 1938 in East Chicago. His wife, Mary preceded him in death on July 5, 1995 as well as his brother, Matthew (Eleanor) in 2007; and his sister, Ann (Pete) Nemcevic in 1995. Frank also lost two grandsons: Frankie IV in 1983 and Nathan Sass in 2014. He is survived by his five children: Judith (William R.) Davis, Christine (David) Strug, and Frank (Faye) Jr., Walter (Sharon), and Harold (Vickie) Hoffman. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and loving friends. Frank retired first from GATX and later the letter carriers. He even worked at Our Lady Grace Church as a crossing guard. Frank was a very hard worker and loved the outdoors especially trout fishing. Later in life he enjoyed traveling to gambling casinos. Bogue was married to his late wife, Elizabeth, 29 years. She worked beside him on the U.S. census and at the University of Chicago as a research associate. His dearest friend the past 40 years was Isabel Garcia, also an ally and essential part of his research center. “She and her family are like extended family to myself and my sister,” Maguire said. A World War II Navy veteran, Bogue was stationed on the USS Cabot, the same ship as war correspondent Ernie Pyle, in the Pacific, during typhoons. Bogue was wounded by shrapnel in his leg when the ship was struck by a kamikaze pilot. Bogue, who owned an Indiana home near Lake Michigan, loved the dunes. “We spent most summer Sundays at the beach, cooking on a hibachi grill and just relaxing,” Maguire said. “Always we stayed until the sun set.” JOHN J. William was in ROTC all thru High School and graduated from Tolliston in 1948 and then enlisted in the US Navy aboard the USS Gunston Hall during the Korean Conflict. She was recently retired after 31 years of service at St. Mary Medical Center, Hobart, IN where she was an RN and a Business Analyst at the Information Technical Department of the Hospital. Peggy moved from Chicago, Illinois in 1980 to Hammond, IN where she spent the last 34 years. She was a graduate of St Elizabeth School of Nursing, B.S. degree from the College of St. Francis, and received her Master's Degree from Roosevelt University.
