University of Chicago sociology professor Donald J. Bogue was passionate about education, politics and music.
“He never stopped learning and he always
encouraged everyone else to keep learning,” said
Gretchen Maguire, his daughter. “Even in his last
year he was learning new software, reading academic journals, writing and learning how to use an
iPad.”
Mentoring his graduate students through
their doctoral studies was most rewarding for
him, Maguire said. He taught at least one class
annually until quitting at 92 to finish his book on
demography, which was published this year.
In the 1970s and ‘80s Bogue held workshops
for educators and health ministers from countries
who were facing problems with health, population, poverty and teenage pregnancy.
Bogue, who always voted, believed government should improve public education and
health, care for the aged and aid the struggling
poor.

A humble man, Bogue, 96, of Hyde Park, was
generous with money, time and effort, driving to his
daughter’s Northwest Indiana home just to drop off
flowers to plant or a card.
Bogue was married to his late wife, Elizabeth,
29 years. She worked beside him on the U.S. census and at the University of Chicago as a research
associate. His dearest friend the past 40 years was
Isabel Garcia, also an ally and essential part of his
research center.
“She and her family are like extended family to
myself and my sister,” Maguire said.
A World War II Navy veteran, Bogue was stationed on the USS Cabot, the same ship as war
correspondent Ernie Pyle, in the Pacific, during
typhoons. Bogue was wounded by shrapnel in his
leg when the ship was struck by a kamikaze pilot.
Bogue, who owned an Indiana home near Lake
Michigan, loved the dunes.
“We spent most summer Sundays at the beach,
cooking on a hibachi grill and just relaxing,” Maguire
said. “Always we stayed until the sun set.”
