The Strand News From ST. BERNARD’S COLLEGE VOL 19. NO. 2 – JULY 2012 41 Rosehill Road, Essendon 3040 T. (03) 9289 1000 F. (03) 9337 1741 www.sbc.vic.edu.au Old Collegians: www.sboca.org.au ST. BERNARD’S COLLEGE VISION STATEMENT “Achieve Excellence By Learning and Doing” PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE St Bernard’s has a proud tradition in the performing and creative arts, and the annual production, shared with St Columba’s, opening this year on August 2nd is a highlight of the school year. This proud tradition has extended beyond the College with many talented performers from past shows coming together to form “SBOCARTS”. This group is the latest Old Collegians club and is part of the Old Collegians organization. This group of talented and energetic old boys performed their first show – Spelling Bee in 2010 and last year a great production of Urinetown. They are preparing to perform Little Shop of Horrors in 2013. This is testament to the vibrant performing arts culture in the College. In this edition of The Strand I have asked our Head of Performing Arts; Ms Suzie Bradmore to reflect on our achievements and the role of the performing arts at the College. I hope that many of you will take the opportunity to attend Jekyll and Hyde and witness the outstanding talent nurtured in the College Tony Paatsch Tony Paatsch, Principal. Suzie Bradmore reflects on College Arts. It is said that logic will get us from A to B but imagination will take us everywhere. The arts unlock our imagination and stir us to pause, think, and take stock of the world in which we live. They encourage us to sense truths and meanings that can perhaps be grasped in no other way. At St Bernard’s we encourage all students to not only appreciate the arts but to actively participate in them at school and in their lives beyond the classroom. Through the arts students are encouraged to “imagine”, a creative skill worth developing. With imagination we can heal the earth, build a just society, enlighten the human spirit and create things of substance. In keeping with the principles of good pedagogy, we reflect on the past twelve productions. Staged in the College auditorium, our flagship for the arts, it seems the Musicals just keep getting better and better! We are proud of the students’ ability to tackle social, political and historical issues with such skill and maturity. We are not alone! In recent years The Music Theatre Guild of Victoria has begun to formally recognise the outstanding talents of our production staff and students with several of our productions garnering nominations across all aspects of production. Further, our alumni of artists, performers and theatre industry success stories embodies a new generation of talent spawned at St Bernard’s. Their legacy is seen in the students who follow ~ inspired by their talent, effort and achievements. Now in our second decade of musicals, we are encouraged by the past and excited about the future. The musical is not only an opportunity to promote our school within the community but also valued as a vital part of the wellrounded education for our students and an outstanding environment in which tapped and untapped talent can thrive. In August this year we are set to host Jekyll and Hyde, the musical. An evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil, Jekyll and Hyde is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his father’s mental illness lies in the separation of Man’s evil nature from his good, Dr. Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of late 19th century London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde. Jekyll and Hyde opened on Broadway at the Plymouth Theatre on April 28, 1997 and closed on January 7, 2001 after 44 previews and 1,543 performances. It is the longestrunning show in the history of the Plymouth Theatre. It has been nominated for several Tony Awards and has won many other awards, including the Theatre World Award. Tickets are now on sale. Ticket order forms can be found on our website or call 9289 1049. FROM THE EDITOR On Friday April 20 the Annual College Hall of Fame event was held at the Australian Club in William Street. In what was a truly memorable evening in a venue certainly befitting of the occasion, three more people were inducted into the College Foundation’s Hall of Fame, with one previous inductee elevated to Legend status. The three inductees were: Ches Baragwanath AO FCPA • St Bernard’s College 1949 – 1951 • Auditor General of Victoria 1988 -1999 • Officer of the Order of Australia 2003 Fr Lou Heriot • St Bernard’s College 1942 - 1943 (College Dux 1943) • Over 60 Years in the Priesthood • Ordained 1951 and first past student Diocesan Priest Peter McMahon (dec’d) • St Bernard’s College 1954 -1957 • Long time St Bernard’s College Board Chair 1998 - 2008 In addition Justice Geoff Eames ‘62 AM QC was elevated to the status of Legend of the College. Originally inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2010, Geoff received a rousing reception as he described to the audience just how much the award and his education at the College meant to him. Overall, the night was an overwhelming success with the the feel and camaraderie amongst the attendees most evident as they reminisced and celebrated all that is good with St Bernard’s College. Each year this function grows in stature and all past students and anyone involved in the College is encouraged to support the College Foundation, which conducts this night as its prestige event of the year. The principal role of the Foundation continues to be the establishment of an Endowment and it is pleasing to report that it currently has in excess of $900,000 under management and supports eight students by scholarships at a current cost of $39,390 per year. Their immediate goal is to build its corpus to $1,000,000 and fund twelve scholarships per year. As a fundraiser The Foundation conducted its annual Sports Night on Friday June 1 in the College Pavilion. “Slammin” Sam Kekovich was guest speaker for the evening and regaled all present with tales of his footballing days at North Melbourne as well as his more recent exploits as a multi-mega media star and Lamb Ambassador. Sam had the crowd in hysterics as he retold stories of his halcyon days leaving those gathered in absolutely no doubt of his place in AFL/VFL history. His irreverent insights and opinions into everything from our political situation through to what it really means to be Australian were compulsory listening and had the crowd constantly wiping tears of laughter from their eyes. All in all a fantastic night was had by all, with a significant amount of money raised for the College Foundation in its tireless work for the betterment of St Bernard’s. Michael Perrett, Director of Development Geoff Eames, Patrick McMahon (on behalf of his late father Peter), Fr Lou Heriot and Ches Baragwanath SBOCA It has been a busy start to the year at SBOCA headquarters. The committee is currently in transition mode and we welcome Brad Turville ‘02 to the board. With a career as a numbers man, Brad steps straight into the pivotal Treasure’s role. The SBOCA committee is currently on the look out for additional members to join us for a short meeting 5 or 6 times a year and discuss all things Old Collegian. This is a wonderful opportunity for any Old Boys to bring their current business acumen to the table or simply share their suggestions and impressions in our association that aims to give back to the school community with an emphasis on those that have completed their school days. We would like to hear from anyone interested in such a role, which can be very rewarding. With that in mind, we are gearing up for our biggest night of the year, the 2012 St Bernard’s Old Collegians Annual Dinner on Friday, August 17th. This year’s event will take on even greater significance as we acknowledge every College Captain and Vice Captain from the 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s and to 1980. Simon Madden will be the Master of Ceremonies and it promises to be quite a night with some anecdotes from some true legends of our history. A booking slip for this event and also for the Golf Day is attached, so please forward your bookings to the College as soon as possible. Finally, if you are an Old Boy and not yet registered on our website www.sboca.org.au, we implore you to do so. By registering free on the site, you will have access to a myriad of privileges, the least of all the popular e-newsletter: “Bernie’s Two Minute Friday” which will keep you abreast of all the happenings in and around the SBOCA community. Alice wanted a Catholic Education for her children and the nearest Christian Brothers School at that time was St Joseph’s College in North Melbourne. She sent her boys Harold Bill and Jim to St Josephs in the knowledge that the Christian Brothers would provide them with a fine educational grounding. Harold and Bill continued living in Essendon where their mother had settled and soon began to produce and nurture their own families. Harold and his brother Bill were the original Hilbert Brothers – Earthmovers, after early careers as Dairy and Poultry farmers upstream along Steeles Creek. Bill’s son John ‘53 was the first Hilbert to go to the newly established St Bernard’s College at The Strand in Moonee Ponds. At that time St Bernard’s did not offer Matriculation and the students found themselves travelling to St Kevin’s Toorak to do that final year of study. Eventually Harold’s sons began at St Bernard’s - Patrick ‘63, Tony ‘64, Bryan ‘66, James ‘70 and the late Michael ‘75. Harold proved to be a handy ally for the Christian Brothers after acting as Shire President and local businessman he had many contacts. With a strong association between Br P B Murphy and other fathers at the time they purchased the land on which the College now stands in West Essendon. Patrick, Tony and Bryan can readily recall events that will remain fixed in their memories over the years, such things as John Fredrickson, College mile champion, carrying the Olympic torch down Mt Alexander Road past Queens Park. The whole school turned out to cheer him on. There were the cadets in those days practising on the Handball Court, Gymnastics in the sheds, Football at Fairburn Park and ANZAC Day at the Queens Park Cenotaph. Perhaps obvious in hindsight but visionary at the time, Br P B Murphy saw the need for a bigger campus and better facilities, both for educating the boys and developing their skills in sport, as they became young men. It was in this mindset that he called on some of the men and women of the boys at the school at that time. The Hilbert families were part of the group in Moonee Ponds. At that t themselves travelling to St began at St Bernard’s with proved to be a handy ally fo businessman he had many that raised funds through bar-b-q’s, fetes, raffles andfathers at the time they pu volunteer help to put this developing school on the map. Vacant land at thePatrick Tony and Bryan can West Essendon site was turned into a gherkin and potato farm and many of the boys and their parents were called on to dig and pick the crops. As the Hilbert home was half way years, such things as John F between where the brothers lived in The Strand Moonee Ponds and the new Alexander Road past Queen College, Br Murphy would call past the house in his familiar blue and white Volkswagen Kombi van to conscript labour for harvesting. So many friendships cadets in those days practis and bonds were made through this common goal and the camaraderie of the Park and ANZAC Day at the time endures in the school with past and current students to this very day. In 1963 Patrick and Tony Hilbert were part of the first group of students to be able time, Br P B Murphy saw th to do their Leaving and Matriculation at Beryl Street West Essendon. At that time the grounds of the college had one tree – a very oldboys and developing their s willow by the caretaker’s cottage. There was one oval carved out with thecalled on some of the men help of Hilbert Brothers earthmovers (P B Murphy Oval) and only one wing of the college standing were part of the group that lonely on a ‘carved out’ piece of ground with scarcely a blade of grass to be seen. Harold’s involvement through his construction company was substantial this developing school on t and a sound working relationship with Brothers Murphy, Collopy, Chappell and others forged a strong bond with St Bernard’s. Harold’s involvement in the and potato farm and many establishment of the College Western boundary by straightening the creek is legendary and provided much conjecture on legal the Hilbert home was half w question but it was done successfully and it provided substantial extra land forthe new College, Br Murph both gherkin and potato growing and the development of new spectacular ovals in years to come. After Harold died (1984) the Hilbert family were awarded Kombi van to conscript labo the great honour of having one of these ovals named after him – the H H Hilbert oval. this common goal and the c Harold and Sheila Hilbert took the task at hand to assist with the development of Brother Murphy’s dream very seriously. They sent all 5 students to this very day. of their sons to St Bernard’s and Harold was president of the Parents and Friends in 1963-64 after being Treasurer from 1957-59. Sheila was president of the Ladies Auxilary from 1971-73. The years rolled on and the next generation of Hilberts began to attend the college. Tony’s son Justin ‘83, Jim’s sons Daniel ‘95, Andrew ‘97 and Luke ‘99. Hilberts have been actively associated with St Bernard’s for the best part of 60 years and the end may not be in sight yet as further Hilbert families develop and sons are being born. Stefano Boscaglia graduated from St Bernard’s in 1996 and completed a Marketing degree to begin his climb in the corporate world, working in numerous roles for Hutchison Telecoms. After a few years working within their marketing division, Stefano moved into a sponsorship management role where he held major relationships with the likes of the Australian Cricket Team, the Essendon Football Club and many other major players across a variety of industries. Stefano was even lucky enough to toss the coin for the 1999 Boxing Day test match between Australia and England. Year 8’s Patrick Matthews picked up a gold medal in the Under 15 2000 metre steeplechase and like Jack backed up and finished fourth in the 3000 metres. Year 10’s Connor McShanag took silver in the 5000 metre walk and in the field Year 11’s Mate Zahtila threw very well winning gold in the Under 18 javelin. Year 11’s James Costello also performed well in the javelin finishing third in the Under 17 age group. He also competed in the long jump and triple jump finishing fourth and sixth respectively. Jack Avolino Lovely to hear that Trevor Goodison ’99 and his wife Vanessa welcomed twin boys Ryan and Justin into the world on November 29, 2011. One of the greatest athletes the College has ever produced Johnny Rayner ‘08 soared to even greater heights recently when he won the 800 metre national title at the Australian Track & Field event held at the new Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. After coming from behind to win the Victorian 800m title only a month beforehand Johnny was full of confidence despite having to come up against the nations best. He comfortably qualified for the final, starting from the middle of the track as the starters gun went off and settled down in a handy 5th place. He would hold this position for much of the race before running down the leaders in the straight and bursting clear to win in a time of 1:47.98. He now has his eyes firmly set on Europe in June and judging by his recent performances it would be a brave man to bet against him in whatever he contests. Mark Mansour ‘98 and his wife Mara celebrated the birth of their son Louis Valentino on 11 April. It has a been a great year for past students in athletics as Adrian Mott ’03 added the Victorian 100m title in 10.65 to his trophy cabinet. This goes with his Stawell Gift win of 2006 The following students were selected into the ACC Team of the Year for Term 1 sports Darren Colaco – Cricket (All-Rounder) Patrick Kirley – Volleyball (Starting 6) Zachary Bye – Volleyball (Starting 6) Trent O’Dea – Volleyball (Starting 6) DAV Debating - Jarrod Grech Tim Harvey ’96 and Alyshia welcomed the birth of their first child Ellie Jo on 11 June. Also first grandchild for proud grandparents Ian ’68 and Margaret Harvey. In the Australian Surf Life-Saving Championships at Kurrawa in Queensland, Stephen Iannazzo (‘99) and Luke Van Meel (‘05) followed their State Championship Patrol Competition Gold Medal with a National Bronze Medal. This is their 3rd consecutive National podium finish in the event. Stephen turned out again the next day, to win a Silver Medal in the Australian Champion Life-Saver multi-event competition. John Sculli (‘96) along with gorgeous wife Romina and beautiful girls Tiana and Emilia, welcomed James Anthony into the world on March 28. The arrival of James doubles the number of males in the Sculli household much to John’s delight/relief! Ben Kilkenny (‘96) along with his fabulous wife Bronwyn welcomed their first child Thomas Robert into the world on July 2. With passionate Western Bulldogs supporters as parents little Thomas should swell membership numbers down at the Kennel by 1 unless Uncle Sam Kilkenny (‘01) can hitch him up to the Bombers bandwagon beforehand. Current teacher and assistant coach of the Old Boys football club Nick Smith ’98 and his wife Kelly welcomed their first child Ava Grace on 1 July. On Thursday 21 June at the Clocktower in Moonee Ponds nine Year 8 boys performed in the Catholic Education Office Student Wellbeing Drama Festival. The boys were outstanding in their performance dealing with the issues of bullying and resilience. The parents who attended the evening were thrilled and very proud of the efforts of our young performers. Special thanks must go of course to the boys for their commitment to the project (there was never any doubt they would always rise to the challenge) but thanks should also go to past student and current teacher Brendan Tollit ‘00, for firstly working with the boys to create the play and secondly for engaging students who, in many cases would never have had the opportunity to perform in such a forum. The boys were awarded a certificate of excellence for the best resilience message, and a certificate of excellence for the best concept. Below is a list of the boys who performed: Austin Burke, Lucas Incantalupo, Luke Mascaro, Matthew Geramani, Tom Headley, Shea Wellington, Chris Graham, Mark Di Bartolomeo and Robert Adorno COLLEGE DASH In his last official race as a St Bernard’s student Liam McIntyre took last year’s College Dash. This win was six years in the making and must have been very satisfying for him. Not only did he win the event but also he took nearly six seconds off his previous best time, which is a remarkable effort. He has now leap frogged his older brother Owen ‘06 and now has bragging rights in the McIntyre household. In the race itself Zaron Smith got away to his usual quick start with Liam and debutante Matthew Gurrisi slipping into second and third behind him. The race tightened up a little through the halfway mark but Zaron stole a little gap at the top of the hill and in the run down Hampton Road. In the end though Liam was too strong. The College Dash often throws up some ‘surprise packet’ performances and this year was no different. Matthew Gurrisi is not a name that has been associated with athletics at the college but it was a great first up run from him today. He tired in the later stages of the race, being overtaken by young Patrick Matthews, but it was still a fine run. Results: 1st Liam McIntyre 2:51.77 (PB) 2nd Zaron Smith 2:52.45 3rd Patrick Matthews 3:03.66 4th Matthew Gurrisi 3:04.35* 5th Lachlan Brown 3:11.08 6th Nicolas Lukies 3:12.71 (PB) 7th Michael Satterley 3:15.61 8th Mr Gerard Brown 3:17.17 9th Luke Beddoe 3:25.36* 10th Damian Hughes 3:28.60 (PB) 11th Shea Wellington 3:34.94* 12th Cameron Walsh 4:03.59* * First run over the course CHESS Last years ACC Open Chess Team achieved the best result for over a decade in the Division 2 category. St Bernard’s equalled with Simond’s College on 33.5 points behind Mazenod on 44 points. In the past few years we have hovered around 4th and 5th place, this is a great feat to have achieved second placing. Congratulations go to Jameson Trainor (9E) for winning 6 out of his 7 games enabling the team to sneak into the second place. Well done to the rest of the team Vincent Bonasera (Captain), Chris Galle, Johnny Nguyen, Peter Sharpels, Nathan Ratnam, Sam Webster, Ben Morrell and Rielly Watts. We especially thank our Year 12 students Vincent and Nathan as this was their last opportunity to represent the school. Also thanks to Vincent who has been a great supporter of the game since he was in Year 7. In October the ACC Chess Tournament introduced for the first time entry in the junior (Year 7 & 8) and in the intermediate teams (Year 9 & 10). In the past, the teams were made up of the best players from Year 7 to 10. The new format enabled a greater range of students to compete at their own age group. Both Intermediate and Junior teams were in the Division 1, consequently they confronted robust opposition. Both teams displayed some excellent skills, however it was not enough to overcome the might of some of the other teams. The intermediate team came fifth out of 8 teams and the juniors came 7th out of the 8 teams. We congratulate James Lew who won 5 out of 7 his games in the first seat ranking. Well done to Jameson Trainor, Chris Galle, Peter Sharples, Johnny Nguyen, Ben Morell, Sam Webster, William Harris, Reilly Watts, James Lew, Dion Harris, Joseph Prencipe, Ben Scaramazzino, Mark Di Bartolomeo, Callum Trainor, Nicholas Colendra, Pierre Renga, Luke Sorensen and Dominador Lopez. ST. BERNARD’S OLD COLLEGIANS FOOTBALL CLUB INC. St Bernard’s Development Focus Starts to Yield Rewards Late in 2011 the St Bernard’s Old Collegian’s Football Club laid out a detailed plan for the club both on and off the field. The top three priorities are: Development, Development and Development. Through Development at all levels of the club we are working hard on our ultimate goal “to create the best possible environment for our players to achieve their best on the field and to be good citizens of the community off the field”. That’s not to say winning isn’t important, it is and our teams try to win each game they play. However achieving a person/team’s best is very rewarding, very satisfying and importantly very enjoyable and a lot of fun. We see the Club’s role as providing the environment to make this individual and team best possible, and if we can do that the win/loss ratio will look after itself. In a Club where over 650 boys and men run out to play each weekend, development of our Coaching Panel is an on-going project. Director of Football Development Simon Atkins and Football Consultant Dean Laidley not only “coach the coaches” but also are deeply involved in developing the playing list. In addition to developing playing skills, structures and game plans, players are also instructed that respect for umpires and their fellow competitors is part of the make up of a high quality St Bernard’s footballer. Under 2011 Grand Final Senior Coach Chris Tankard and his senior club panel, and despite a heavy toll of injuries, this development focus is starting to yield results. The playing list is achieving material improvement and the win/loss ratio is starting to show the benefits. At the mid point of the season the firsts have consolidated in 5th position just two games off the final four. Damien Sullivan’s 2nd’s are just percentage out of third place and Frank Monaghan’s hard working thirds are providing reinforcements for higher Bernard’s teams, yet are still just a game out of 5th. Peter Wood’s U/19 Premier level young guns are 7 and 1 in third spot, while Kevin Jones U/19 development team fight gamely each week often against other clubs top U/19 lads. Serge Romano’s U/18 pups are showing huge improvement to be 5th just a game out of the top four. Last but by no means least is the good news story that is Mel Beyer’s merry band of Club 18 Warriors. The Warriors entered the season as always in good spirits despite two long hard winless years behind them. Well it was game on in round one racking up win number one, however the boys had forgotten the words to the club song! Easily fixed as team manager Deb Marinier lead them into the main rooms where they read the words off the wall and belted out the theme song. The Warriors have consolidated with multiple wins (they now know the words to the song) and are just a game out of third. Carey are a valuable tool for club coaches. A key part of the club is our first class Training and Medical Services Team. Head Trainer Ian Wheeler and his team work closely with the club physio’s Tate Pearson, David Micallef, Rebecca Wade and other staff to give best practice treatment and rehab for all injured players. To sustain and fund a Club of our size we have also worked very hard on engagement with the St Bernard’s Community. We have signed up over 320 members and our membership drive continues via our online website store at “stbernardsfc.com.au”. Major events like the 220 strong Ladies Lunch and 330 strong Club Ball help facilitate this aim. The Diamond Dogs’ business coterie, chaired by Vinnie McGuire, is continuing its important financial/ employment and mentoring work and the very popular Legends Day is fast approaching on July 14th. Generous and supportive senior & junior club sponsors headed up by our Major Sponsor North Suburban Sports Club and Community Partners Bendigo Bank Strathmore, John Fawkner Hospital and Nelson Alexander, are all listed on our website and we ask again for you support of those sponsors /key suppliers that support our club. It was with great pleasure at the Club Ball, as part of our 2012 Women’s Year, we announced our three joint no1 Ticket Holders: Club Secretary Doriana Cooper, Team Manager Deb Marinier and Catering Manager Veronica Moloney. We felt it was long overdue to recognize the fantastic support the women of St Bernard’s have given the Club though its 50 years. Our three No1 Ladies are great ambassadors for all the women who continue to support our great club. As the club pursues its development focus, we are very grateful for all the assistance we receive from the school. A special thanks to Principal Tony Paatsch, College Board Chair Peter Hogan, Development Officer Michael Perrett, Facilities Manager Bruce Wallace and Grounds Manager Brett Huxtable and his team. We would like to finish with an “Open Invitation” for all in the St Bernard’s Community, to come down to the Snake Pit anytime to see for yourself the development, top class football, hard work and fun, that is going on at the Football Club. Our 2012 catch cry has been to “get on board” and we would be delighted to have you all “GET ON BOARD” with the St Bernard’s Old Collegian’s Football Club for the remainder of 2012 and beyond. All the very best to you and your family. Regards Patrick Crabb, President - St Bernard’s Old Collegians Football Club. Meanwhile in the Junior Club you only have to see the beaming faces of the hundreds of junior players and parents at the fortnightly presentations, to know the boys are not only improving and winning a few games, but also having a ton of fun along the way in their football journey. Andrew Vinecombe his dedicated Committee and volunteer parent army, continue to do a great job managing over 300 budding young AFL stars. Individual rewards have also been seen with record 17 players from the junior club selected for representative games. While in the senior club Josh Madden, Andrew Merrington and Alex Singleton have represented the club with distinction in VAFA rep football. Our Club can’t control what our rivals do so we can’t win every game, but as this progress report shows our development focus is starting to yield individual and team rewards and most importantly is helping our players be the best they can be. Creating such a positive environment only occurs through hard work and dedication. Video and Dartfish analytics from Paul Dalmau and Wayne Development Coach Dean Laidley instructing forwards during the recent win against St Bede’s, at VAFA HQ Elsternwick Park. ST. BERNARD’S OLD COLLEGIANS BASKETBALL CLUB children and youth involved in basketball. Andrew is also available for personalised training sessions. He can be contacted through his website - www.oneononeskills.com The club would like to thank St Bernard’s College for their ongoing support. We are pleased to have been able to donate a defibrillator and cabinet to the College. This unit is located in the foyer area as you walk into the auditorium. Once again the St Bernard’s Old Collegians Basketball Club has had another successful season with 18 teams participating in the local domestic competition. We are pleased to announce that Andrew Feltham, a stalwart of the club, will be performing a Director of Coaching role. Andrew is one of several volunteers who give many hours to our club. He is passionate about coaching and getting I invite parents of children aged 7 years and up interested in playing basketball to make contact with our list manager, Phil Thorpe (0416 188 413). We also welcome young coaches, particularly students of St Bernard’s, to become involved. Kerin Moloney, President moloney66@optusnet.com.au ST. BERNARD’S OLD COLLEGIANS CRICKET CLUB INC. Our 2nd XI led by Michael Thom ’99 had a great run in the second half of the season, and winning some crucial close games built belief in this young team as they progressed to the finals, finishing 4th on the ladder. A youth development policy had been instituted for this team, so not a lot was expected, so to make the finals was a great achievement. Unfortunately in the Semi Final, against a strong Hoppers Crossing, we bowled them out for only 126 to be well placed, but did not handle the pressure with the bat, succumbing for 79. But it will be a great learning experience. St. Bernard’s Old Collegians Cricket Club’s recently completed 2011 /2012 season was a year of some struggle after many years riding an upward curve of success. The Club’s 1st XI, playing in the Senior Division of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association, had a moderate season overall and struggled to obtain the results needed to challenge for the finals. There were some excuses with injuries and unavailabilities, as well as a very young 1st XI team for most of the year, but the spirit remained positive and strong. We managed to win a crucial fixture in the penultimate round against McKinnon to put us in the box seat to avoid relegation; however we still needed a result against top team Yarraville Club in the final round to be certain of survival. Thankfully a day long downpour on the final day of the season gave us a washed out draw and enabled us to obtain the necessary points out of the match to remain in Senior Division. Winner of the Beau Redmond Medal for Club Champion was 1st XI Captain and College Director of Sport Craig Osborne ’97 (Left). This was the 8th occasion that Craig has been honoured as Club Champion and it is a wonderful achievement in consistency and performance over a long period of time. Runner Up in the count was Luke Davis, ’00 who had one of his best seasons with the ball to be our highest wicket taker, and 3rd was Jordan Mills ’05 who had a career best season with the bat, establishing himself at the top of the batting order. Jordan also took out the 1st XI Batting, while Craig won the 1st XI Bowling. It was fantastic to see a number of young 1st XI debutants during the season that have come through the club’s strong junior system and lower XIs – Jake Dunell ‘05, James Davey ’09, Patrick O’Connell, Brad Cooper ’10 and current Year 12 College student James Riley. The 3rd XI led by a new young Captain in Brendan Davey ’05 had an inconsistent season with some good results mixed in with some not so good. They finished 6th on the ladder but with a number of young players improving as senior cricketers there were positives. The 4th XI led by John Jordan once again cobbled together a very competitive season and a lack of depth from injuries and availabilities through the club impacted upon the 4ths, and they ran out of steam towards the end of the season to finish 7th. The Junior sector of the Club under the direction of Junior Co-ordinator Duncan Hefter continues to grow and flourish in developing young cricketers, and while not achieving the on field success of some past years, the youngsters all enjoyed their cricket, and that’s what it is all about at junior level. The best effort was from our second U16 team, playing in U16D Grade of the North West Cricket Association who made the Grand Final, only to go down in a close game. Thanks to Tony Isaacs ‘71 who has passionately coached junior teams right through the grades over many years, and whose direct involvement in the juniors has come to an end. It is currently the cricket off-season but there has been some movement. The Club would like to thank Rex Bennett for his 5 years at the helm as Coach; Rex brought discipline and structures to the club that were crucial in our success and rise up the grades during the time of his tenure. A new Coach has recently been appointed and it is a delight to welcome Romain Grenville on board. Romain is a young man with a fresh approach to the game and a passion for developing young cricketers to achieve their maximum potential, we see this as an exciting prospect given our youthful playing list. Romain has played Premier 1st XI cricket at Frankston Peninsula and North Melbourne and was involved in Victoria’s underage representative teams, so he brings considerable playing abilities as a fast bowler and higher order batsman, which will hopefully benefit the 1st XI! 1st XI Captain Craig Osborne has been reappointed and we look forward to Romain and Craig working together and with additional coaching resources on our panel, to improve our cricketers as we look to become a genuine contender in Senior Division in 2012 / 2013. Information on the St. Bernard’s Old Collegians Cricket Club can be found at our website (soon to be relaunched) www.stbernardsoccc.com or by contacting Club President Anthony Jordan ’90 on jordo73@yahoo.com or 0438 022 210. ST. BERNARD’S VOLLEYBALL CLUB After a successful year last year and pleasing results from Nationals the Club is getting ready for the start of competitions and hopefully another successful year. The two major events of the year are the National Schools Cup which is held in December and is preceded by the qualifying Victorian Schools Cup which will be held at the State Volleyball Centre on July 27th – 29th. We are entering teams in U14, U15, U16, U17 and Open Divisions. In March the senior boys competed in the Victorian Schools Beach Volleyball Championships. The College had success in this tournament with Year 10’s playing on Thursday 15th and Years 11 and 12’s playing on Friday 16th March. Congratulations to Luke Fletcher and Jameson Trainor who won Gold (Yr 10) defeating Melbourne High School and to Alex Ielo and Daniel Allison who won Silver (Yr 11) narrowly losing to Maribyrnong College with Anthony Williams and Mark Sampson taking Bronze in the same division. Along with these boys Pat Kirley, Zach Bye, Mitchell O’Dea, Mackenzie Biffin, Joshua Stipic and Ryan Lofaro also competed. Throughout the year the boys will compete at Vic’s, Country and local Tournaments, Western Region Volleyball League, Junior State League and Nationals as well as various state team trials. We offer congratulations to our current and past students who have been selected to represent Victoria at this year’s National Tournament at the State Volleyball Centre in Melbourne. U19: Trent O’Dea (Captain), Pat Kirley and Zach Bye - Year 12 Alex Ielo (Vice Captain) - Year 11 U17: Luke Fletcher – Year 10 Old Boys: U23: Michael Cirillo (’09), Tom Swallow (’10) We wish the boys luck at their upcoming Tournaments! ST. BERNARD’S HOCKEY CLUB It has been a very successful year so far for the St Bernard’s Hockey Club. There has been a major overhaul of the club’s administration, with ex-SBC students filling some key roles. President Tim FitzGerald ‘07, treasurer Kristian Davies ‘08 and head men’s coach Jordan Magdalani ‘04 are all new inclusions. The committee have been working hard throughout the year on building the club and improving our performance on and off the field. This has coincided with the introduction of new uniforms and the revamping of the clubrooms. Our junior teams are all looking ahead to finals, with the U/13s on top of the ladder, U/17s second, and both U/15 teams competing well. This is a continuation of our dominance in the junior competition in recent years, as all four teams are set to push for the premiership. After some patchy performances at the start of the season, the State League 4 boys are looking strong as they put in place Jordan’s game plan, and are currently sitting 3rd on the ladder. Our Metro teams battle away as they also move towards finals contention. New players are always welcome to come down and have a hit. Seniors training is on Tuesday/Thursday from 6.30pm at the SBC hockey field. As a developing club, it is important to have adequate resources for financial viability. We are currently looking for sponsors who are willing to support the hockey club and open up their exposure to a whole new client base. Contact president@sbchc.com.au for details. KEILOR ST. BERNARD’S ATHLETICS CLUB The year has been a series of highs and lows so far, with the track season finishing on an extreme high. The Club won 5 Premierships - 40 Plus men Under 14 Men - Division 1 Women and Under 16 and Under 14 Girls and were runners up in Division 2 Men - Division 2 Women - Under 18 Men and our second Under 14 girls. This meant that we had 9 teams eligible to go to the State finals and compete against 1st and 2nd teams from other venues and combined teams from country centers. Here our Under 14 and Under 16 girls were successful in taking out the State Championships and the Under 14 boys, although they drew with Collingwood on 601 points each, they lost on a count back for 1st place. The senior women division 1 finished 4th of the 9 teams competing - our best ever placing in this level of competition. Our 40 plus men, despite having a better team than last year, again found the competition very tough and finished 6th.It was a most enjoyable day for all concerned and the amount of effort put in by club members was outstanding. In fact there were 97 personal best or seasons best performances recorded on the day. Also some members baked black, gold and blue cup cakes for the occasion. day. However things have gradually improved since then as Pete and Michael have partly recovered from injury Andrew Rob and Greg are back on deck but we have lost Mark De Campo and Gerard Brown overseas and Sean’s injury appears season ending. However a good performance in the 15k at Ballarat saw the team gain 2nd place an encouraging sign for the future. Also our 50 plus men’s team is only one point off top spot on the premiership ladder having a great battle with APS Collingwood Diamond Valley and Ballarat Region. The juniors are all competing well with the Under 14 girls in 2nd place on the ladder. The new track has been completed at Keilor Park and we are looking forward to some training sessions being conducted there as the lighting improves. Ron Stobaus A number of our athletes medaled in the State Championships and went on to the National Championships conducted in Sydney for the Juniors and Melbourne for the Seniors and Masters, where some were successful in taking the top honors. Monique Cilione has been selected in the Australian Team for the World Junior Championships in Barcelona in July so look out for her performances with the javelin. Our Cross-country team was relegated to Division 2 following a spate of injuries to some of our athletes last season and the start of the season did not look too bright when we found David Ireland was heading overseas to study. Victor Shelamoff, Peter Gaffney and Michael McIntyre were injured and Sean Stevens, Andrew Comley, Rob Trott and Greg Moore were unavailable for the 1st round as was Phil Lane, who was running the Paris Marathon. As a consequence we finished last in Division 2 on the opening Stobaus Clan at State Shield Final Bottom Row Left to Right: Kate Abfalter, Rhiannon Matthews, Emma Abfalter, Patrick Matthews, Middle Row: Catherine Matthews, Andrew Matthews, Anne Stobaus, Ron Stobaus Top Row: Maria Abfalter, David Abfalter GRANDPARENTS DAY Another highly successful Grandparents Day was held in May and pictured here are past student grandfathers with their grandsons Tim Coghlan, Harry Pobjoy College Captain in 1944; Gary Hassett ‘59, Michael Hassett; Gary McKenzie ’65 and Jack Iacobaccio IN THE NEWS In one of the most significant events in V8 Supercar history Japanese car giant Nissan recently announced that it would join the pinnacle of Australian motorsport and touring car racing by entering the Championship from 2013. After a 20-year absence from the Australian Touring Car Championship, Nissan Motorsport (Australia) will run four cars with up and coming V8 Supercar team Kelly Racing. From 2013, Kelly Racing will campaign as Nissan Motorsport – a formalised factory team. The announcement was made in Melbourne by Nissan Australia Managing Director and CEO Dan Thompson and Kelly Racing Chairman John Crennan ’63. John went on to say “This Nissan Factory deal is a career highlight. Ironically 2012 is my 50th year under the GMH/Holden flag with my actual 50th Anniversary falling on December 10. With the 2012 season effectively finishing on this day, it will be weird to remove the imaginary Holden flag pole that has been joined to my hip for 50 years and hoist the Nissan flag and start promoting the sale of their products on day 1 of year 51 “ First day student from 1940 Kevin Power has discovered facebook! It was recently quoted in the Herald Sun that he uses it mainly to keep up to date with friends and family both here and overseas, logging in up to four times a week. “I’m not an addict, but I don’t mind it. There is a lot of rubbish on there,” he said. “Everyone has busy lives, especially the grandkids, and it saves them going out of their way to call you.” Grandfather of Kevin, now 86, has 20 friends after setting up a profile. Kevin’s three sons Shane ’69, Danny ’71 and Kerry ‘72 are all past students and played with the old boys football teams. Business and community leaders gathered at a national pride breakfast hosted by the Lions Club of Essendon on Australia day. Among those at Windy Hill Social Club for the Lions’ 19th annual “I live Australia” breakfast were guest speaker Dr Brian McNamee ’73, CEO of CSL, Essendon MP Justin Madden ’78 and former MP Judy Maddigan, wife of Bill Maddigan ’57. In addition the Stan Morrison Industry Award was presented to local real estate agent Sam Pennisi ‘57 Troy Legudi ’00, a part-owner of racehorse Master of Design, was in a dilemma. He was getting married at 2:30 pm on Saturday 14 April and was worried the ceremony would be held as his sprinter was contesting the Group One T J Smith Stakes at Randwick. So Troy took matters into his own hands and rang the ATC racing manager to request a start time before 2:00pm. It was certainly Troy’s lucky day as he got to watch Master of Design score a monumental upset win, albeit on television, in the $1 million race, then minutes later he tied the knot with Courtney. Another part owner is veterinary surgeon Adam Matthews ’00. After four years as the very successful coach of Calder Cannons in the TAC Under 18 competition Marty Allison ‘80 is taking over from Vic metro coach Rohan Welsh ‘88, who is looking for a VFL or AFL coaching appointment. Another past student, Anton Grbac ‘78 is AFL Victorian high performance manager. Two debut players this season have taken the number of past students to play AFL football to 56. Steven Morris ’06 played his first game in the first match of the season for Richmond and has performed admirably whilst Jordan Schroder ’10 had his first game for Geelong against GWS in early June. On June 21 the College library played host to the launch of Old Boy Travis Berketa’s ‘93 book “Jack Majors: Superhero”. A crowd of over 80 braved the wintery conditions to hear the author speak about his first foray into the world of teenage writing and the experiences that helped shape the action in the book. The book itself tells the story of schoolboy Jack Majors whose life as the target of bullies is turned upside down when he discovers a book that gives him super powers. Local member for Essendon and former classmate of Travis, Ben Carroll ‘93 (Pictured with Travis) was on hand to officially launch the book and thoroughly recommended it to all.To purchase “Jack Majors: Superhero” go to http://jackmajors.com/. Mitchel Brown ’06 was pleased with his second-place finish in Athletics’ Victoria Big V10km. Stopping the clock at 29min 53.9sec Mitchel was rapt to have broken the 30-minute barrier for the first time. Mitchel is also Athletics’ Victoria communications officer. Two years after the salary cap scandal engulfed Melbourne Storm and virtually brought it to its knees, the NRL club is flying high on the field and off. Chief executive Ron Gauci ‘77 says the club is well ahead of schedule on the five-year plan he put in place when he was appointed in July 2010. “We’ve recovered extremely well and this year we’ve hit records in several of our metrics,” Ron stated. “We’re looking at record results for our total revenue, our sponsorship numbers and our membership and crowd levels, and our cost base has been driven down as well.” Quite a change from when Ron stepped into the club two years ago! Brian Mannix ’79 was certainly a big hit when he recently appeared on Dancing with the Stars. After graduating from SBC he wanted to be a film director but was rejected by Swinburne Film and television School and then his band – Uncanny X-men shot to fame in the ‘80’s so he never got to film and television school. Brian danced for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia in memory of his father who died from prostate cancer. Collingwood footballer Harry O’Brien was the first of 30 well-known faces painted in 30 days by Vincent Fantauzzo ’95 for an exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Vincent – best known for Archibald Prize portraits of Heath Ledger and Matt Moran – painted a new 60cm x 40cm portrait each day using photographs of each subject. Labor’s Ben Carroll ‘93 is the new Niddrie MP with the former Steve Bracks staffer easily winning the recent by-election. With the seat held by Labor since 1976 and the Liberal Party’s decision to not stand a candidate, Ben was always outright favourite to win the by-election, called after former deputy premier Rob Hulls quit politics after a health scare. However he took nothing for granted during his campaign. ‘‘We worked very hard and door-knocked more than 2000 homes. It was a great result and I think a clear message to [Premier] Ted Baillieu that he needs to have a jobs plan. I’ll be a very busy local member of Parliament,’’ Ben stated after his win. A qualified lawyer with a current practicing certificate, Ben has worked for the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office and volunteered nights at a local Community Legal Service. He has served as an adviser in both state and federal Labor governments. We believe that Ben has become our fifth past student Member of Parliament after Barry Rowe ‘63, Michael Arnold ’60, Justin Madden ‘78 and Scott Ryan ‘90. VALE Patricia, the youngest daughter of our Hall of Fame legend, Mrs Margaret Carey, died peacefully after a long illness on June 19, aged 52 years. She was the loving sister of David ‘65, Michael ’67 and Peter ‘71 and sister-in-law of Des McGowan ‘68 and Neil Heskett ’70. Richard Edmund (Dick) Butler AM, who was a respected leader in inter national telecommunications for many years passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday 23rd June aged 86. Earlier this month he entered Mercy Private for a knee operation but developed complications that required him to be transferred to St Vincent’s Private Intensive Care for respiratory care. He was a first day student of the College and attended until 1943. A keen supporter of the College and the Old Collegians, he was inducted into the College Hall of Fame in 2009. His brother Kevin ’61 is also a past student. Fr LEO HERIOT Fr Leo was born in Clifton Hill on Feb. 13, 1932, was professed as a Salesian at Sunbury in 1953 and was ordained a priest in Madras, India in 1963. He volunteered for the missions in India and worked there from 1963 until 1991. For the majority of that time he held positions of responsibility for the formation of young Salesians: Novice Master from 1973 until 1984 and Rector of the Theologate from 1984 until 1991. On his return to the AustraliaPacific Province, Fr Leo was assistant Priest in the parishes of Engadine, NSW (1991) and Katherine, NT (1992 - 1993) before again taking up his missionary vocation when he worked in Samoa (1994 -2006) and then Fiji (2006- 2011). Fr Leo was a tremendous formator and teacher, spreading his great knowledge and love of the Congregation and the Church and forming generations of Salesians to participate in the mission of Don Bosco in the world. He is the brother of St Bernard’s Hall of Fame member Fr Lou Heriot ’43. Willie Watt After leaving St Bernard’s Willie Watt ‘52 became a member of probably one of the best rhythm sections of Australian jazz, that of the Melbourne New Orleans Jazz Band. (Right) Like many Australian jazzmen of the 1950’s Willie left for England and soon became hooked on the New Orleans style jazz. The Melbourne New Orleans Jazz Band obtained a contract in 1961 to play jazz clubs in England and Europe, which were experiencing a jazz boom at the time – this boom hit Australia a few years later. The band toured successfully and then broke up in England in early 1963. Willie then joined the Hot Sands Jazz Band, which became very popular and from there he went to the Yarra Yarra Jazz Band in the 70’s. After a long lay off Willie “rediscovered his banjo under the bed” but unfortunately he never rediscovered that wonderful ringing tone of his early years. In attendance at the wake held in his honour was Dave Rankin ’52, renowned trombone player who as well as attending SBC with Willie was also a member of the Melbourne New Orleans Jazz Band 1940’s society Are you interested in learning more about leaving a gift to St Bernard’s College in your will? The swim team, captained by Jake Panozzo, put in an extraordinary effort, taking victory in a night full of surprises, upsets and delays. The night started with captain Panozzo taking victory in the open 200m freestyle by 6 seconds, and with everyone looking to capitalise on his success, the boys were bound to put in a brilliant effort. Throughout the night we found ourselves in a 4-way battle with Mazenod, St Bede’s and Whitefriars for the title, with results often coming down to the thousandth of the second, but the Bernard’s boys pulled through to win the title by the narrowest of margins. Congratulations to all involved in our glorious victory, especially Carol Iannazzo, Bernadette Kirkwood, Chris Mannix and James Delzoppo, for the tireless hours they put in poolside. We look forward to defending the most hard earned of titles next year. On Wednesday March 28 at the new Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park, Gerard Brown and his ACC Athletics team made history when they captured a record 10th straight ACC Athletics crown. In what was a closely fought contest all day the Bernard’s team were victorious by half a point over a gallant Parade outfit 320 – 319.5 with Salesian finishing 3rd on 280 points. The surroundings may have been different from the old Olympic Park but the effort and result remained the same with each and every competitor giving it there all to secure the muchcoveted title. This amazing feat by Gerard and the boys means St Bernard’s are still the proud owners of all the ACC silverware, with the Athletics Shield returning to the Bernard’s trophy Cabinet alongside the ACC Swimming and Cross-Country titles, a rare feat that has only happened four times in ACC history.
