Mrs. BARNETT belonged to a family with a military record, being the daughter of Sergeant-major Alexander BREBNER, who was wounded in the battle of Waterloo. She has six grandsons at present serving at the front, one of whom,(Private R.R. SMOTH) has been awarded the Military Medal. Mrs. BARNETT, who was born at Aberdeen in 1822, and was married to Mr. Richard H. CIUMBERBEACH, of Manchester, in 1850, arrived at Port Chalmers in the Strathmore in 1856. Mr. CUMBERBEACH died on the voyage to New Zealand, and was buried at sea, leaving his wife with four young children. In 1853 she married Mr. Henry BARNETT, and lived for a shore time at Moeraki, being taken there in a bullock dray. In 1860, the family moved by means of a surf boat to Waikouaiti, where Mr. BARNETT had taken up land. Here Mrs. BARNETT resided for over 50 years, and having a good knowledge of nursing was able to afford great assistance to her neighbours until there was a resident physician in the district. Mrs. BARNETT died and was buried at Waikouaiti in 1880, and on Wednesday Mrs. BARNETT will be laid to rest there also at the side of her husband. The surviving members of her immediate family are Mrs. John SMITH (Wyndham), Mr. R. CUMBERBEACH (Mornington), and Mr. G. BARNETT (Styx)." Mr. BREBNER, who was born at Port Chalmers, joined the railway service there in 1873 as a shipping clerk. He was stationed at Port Chalmers for about three years, going to Oamaru in 1876 to take up the position of chief goods clerk. His next move was to Clinton in 1882 as stationmaster, and Mr. BREBNER was at Clinton for five and a half years, and then he removed to Gore. He was at Gore for only 18 months when he was appointed stationmaster at Invercargill in 1895, a position he held for 11 years. In 1906 Mr. BREBNER left Invercargill for Westport, where he was traffic manager for three years, and in 1909 he returned to Invercargill to take over the traffic managership. Of his 45 years in the service Mr. BREBNER spent 20 in Invercargill.
