Introduction. 2004 was a memorable and historic year for the Club and there were also many memorable games on the National stage. Club 2004. • Pride of place for 2004 goes to The Intermediate Football Team, and management who won the first ever County IFC Final, and have advanced to the Connaught Final by virtue of a superb win over firm favourites Mayo Champions Breaffy and Leitrim representatives Dromahair. This team also contested the Kiernan Cup Final but narrowly lost out to Enniscrone/Kilglass. • The U-21 Football team contested the second County ‘’B’’ Final against St Johns and lost by the narrowest of margins. • The senior hurlers reached the County Championship and League Hurling Finals and were unlucky not to win. • The U-14 Footballers won the County Feile Final, and represented the Club and Sligo at the Feile na nOg Finals in Tyrone • The Girls U-16 Team won the County ‘’B’’ final against Castleconnor and the Girls U-12 team won the County ‘’A’’ League against Curry. • U-14 Hurlers won the league. • Coaching of football (boys &girls) and hurling was carried out by a number of dedicated and committed people to whom we should be very grateful. • It was with great sadness that former Club Chairman Hugh McLoughlin passed away in 2004. National 2004. • Kerry restored the purists faith in Gaelic Games with a glorious return to basics as they captured the ‘’Sam Maguire Cup’’ against a gallant Mayo team for the 33rd time. Kerry also won the National League Title with a stylish victory over Galway in the Final. • Pride was the prime motivating factor for the rebels-Cork- after the hurt of losing the 2003 Senior Hurling Final to Kilkenny, as they captured the ‘’Liam Mc Carthy Cup’’ against Kilkenny for a record 29th time. Galway won the National Hurling League against Waterford. • Caltra, a small Club won the Galway SFC County Final for the first time ever, and went on to win the Connaught Club SFC and also to win the ‘’Andy Merrigan Cup’’ on St Patricks Day 2004 against hot favourites ‘An Gaeltacht’ by one point. Caltra truly are the epitome of what Club Championship is all about. They came through a testing series of close matches, and it takes a unique breed of spirit to overcome such adversity. Newtownshandrum, a tiny North Cork Club won the AIB All Ireland Senior Club Hurling Title-‘’Tommy Moore Cup’’against Antrim Club Champions Dunloy. • Tyrone won Minor Football –‘’Tom Markham Cup’’-against Kerry and Galway won the minor hurling against Kilkenny. Armagh won the U-21 Football All Ireland against Mayo and Kilkenny won the U-21 hurling Final. • The students of Sligo I.T. secured their second blue riband Colleges Title – ‘’2004 Datapac Sigerson Cup’’- with a fine win over Queens University. Defending Champions Waterford I.T. underlined their reputation as undisputed College kingpins in February, by securing their fifth ‘’Fitzgibbon Cup’’ title in six years against the University of Limerick. 3 • St. Pats, Navan won the ‘’Hogan Cup’’ – Colleges Senior Football, and St Kierans, Kilkenny won the Senior Colleges Hurling. Provincial 2004. • Mayo won the Connaught Senior title(Nestor Cup), and also the Connaught U21 Title and Galway won the Connaught Minor title and Leitrim won the Connaught Junior Football title. • Galway Senior Ladies won their first ever All-Ireland SFC title-‘’Brendan Martin Cup’’- against a well drilled Dublin team. Sligo Ladies reached the All Ireland JFC Final where they played some scintillating football in Croke Park, but could not overcome a more experienced Kildare Team. • Ballina won the Connaught Senior Club football final for 2004 against Killererin of Galway. County 2004. • Sligo senior footballers won the FBD Connaught League, and came within a kick of a ball of a place in the Semi-Finals of the National Leagues (Div 1). They pushed Roscommon all the way in the Connaught SFC after a draw and extra time. They lost easily to Clare in the Qualifiers. • Sligo Senior Hurlers won the NHL Div 3 Final and were promoted to Div 2. – Congrats to Team Manager Michael Galvin and selectors Henry Cox and Mick Seevers. • Paul Taylor and Paul Durcan have announced their retirement from Inter County Football after many years of dedicated service to Sligo. They were, and still are, great role models for young players as they thrilled Sligo supporters down the years with their skill, and sportsmanship on the field. We were privileged to have them attend Club functions. • Sligo Ladies won the Connaught Junior Championship and went on to contest the Final in Croke Park against Kildare.. Club Communications. Cummann na mBunscoil. County Sligo is fortunate to have one of the most efficient and dynamic Cumann na mBunscoil organisations in the Country. Congratulations to all the teachers involved on their dedication. The Club should play a more positive role in helping out the National Schools in our area. 4 • • • This years I.N.T.O. GAA Mini-Sevens proved once again that the standard of girls Gaelic football in the Country’s Primary Schools continues to rise. Amazing progress has been made in a short number of years. It is surely just a matter of time before many more Counties make the break through at Senior level. We must acknowledge the tremendous work being done by Primary Teachers through out the Country. It is particularly pleasing that boys and girls now participate in Gaelic Games on an equal basis. Thousands more girls are playing this great game in Schools and Clubs around the Country. Congratulations to our local NS on the following achievements:8 + Teacher Flannery Car Sales- Girls winners 2004 were Calry NS. INTO Mini 7’s Competition 2004- Girls winners Calry NS. St Brendans who were group stage winners in the ‘’Fair Play Award’’. The Sligo Cumann na mBunscoil won the coveted ‘’National Roadstone Award’’ for their Annual Publication Relations Project which was presented by An Taoiseach, in the Berkley Court Hotel Dublin. They also received an award for their Hurling development project. This year they have been nominated for a Centenery Camogie Award, and a Fixtures Booklet Award. The Fair Play award was introduced to encourage fair play on and off the pitch. It is a much coveted award and selection is achieved by voting after each stage of the competition. The overall winner in 2004 was Ballisadare NS and St Brendans NS was a group stage winner. Catch and Kick. The Mc Donalds Catch & Kick competitions, introduced nationwide in 2003, was continued in 2004 and enthusiastically received in the Primary Schools of Sligo. Boys and girls were allowed to test themselves in some basic skills, and to compete against pairs of children from other schools in the County. The competitions were organised by GPO’s Eamonn O’Hara, Pat Kilcoyne and Gerry Mc Manus. The Primary Schools ‘’Catch and Kick’’ 2004 winners were Donal Tobin and Barry O’Mahoney of Strandhill NS. As a club we need to play a more active role in providing coaching to the Schools in our area. Finally I want to thank Cumann na mBunscoil and especially the teachers in our local National Schools for their dedication, commitment and hard work in preparing and organising School Teams, boys and girls, hurling and football for the Cumann na mBunscoil competitions. Club Development Workshop. There was a very informative and insightful Pre AGM Club Development Course given by the Connaught Council in Nov 04, in the North Side Centre. Eamonn Mullin and Brian Henry were the Course facilitators. The strength and weakness as perceived by the Club Members were outlined and discussed. Club members who attended: Deirdre Quinn, Sheila Devaney, Geraldine Flanagan, Tim Hynes, Gary Dillon, Marcey Coyne, Liam O’Boyle, Brendan Kelly, Loretta Kearins, Mairead Gonley, Ruth Walshe, Michael Regan, Rory Leahy, Breege Scanlon, Joe Gonley. International rules Series 2004. Last year , when the organisers were reviewing the Coca Cola International Rules games , it was said it would be imperative for Ireland to win the series next time, to guarantee its viability for the future. Over two weeks in October 2004 they did just that, in fine style. Peter Mc Grath’s selection was spot on, containing exactly the type of player the Australians could not handle- fit, fast, those who could think quickly and move themselves and the ball equally so. There was another incentive for the Irish to win this series- naming the trophy after the late, great, Cormac Mc Anallen. This was indeed a fitting tribute to a man whose death on March 2nd 2004 stunned the nation. A very important and equally satisfying win was achieved in both legs, thus ensuring the long term viability of the hybrid game, and the future does look distinctly brighter now. The winning of the 2004 series was also important , and very touching tribute to a gentle giant, in whose honour the trophy was named by his peers. It was a very emotional and 5 exciting moment to see the ‘’Cormac Mc Anallen Cup’’ being hoisted by Irish captain Padraig Joyce. The series is now secured until 2012, and there are a number of worthwhile proposals included in the new deal. The Shinty International between Ireland and Scotland has been a wonderful addition as it allows the best exponents of the small ball game to wear the Irish Jersey. Underage Strategic Plan. The underage Strategic Plan is a National Coaching Template that has been developed by GAA Head of Games Pat Daly, in conjunction with the National Coaching and Games Development Committee, to develop our National Games into the New Millennium. The objectives are to maximise participation and maintain optimum playing standards. The Plan will be jointly funded by the GAA Units:, National, Provincial, County and Club. The Club will have the responsibility to provide certified Coaches to help run initiatives alongside Teachers and Games Promotion Officers(GPO). The Irish Sports Council and the Sports Council of Northern Ireland are partners in this venture, and the plan is being jointly funded through equipment, gear and grants. There are many initiatives through which the plan can be progressed:-Coaching sessions, skills awards, club mini leagues, Inter club blitzes and many more. We are pleased that Eamonn O’Hara has been appointed as GPO to the Sligo City Board and wish him well in his new role. John Tobin has also been appointed as GPO for Connaught. This is a tremendous investment by the GAA and The Sports Council to promote our National Games and as a club we have a key role to play. Recreational Development in Sligo City. Sligo Borough Council is making great progress on the development of Kevinsfort Recreation area which consists, among other amenities, a full size sand carpet grass GAA Pitch, and it was opened in October 2004. The Club played an U-21 match against Owenmore Gaels on the pitch. The Borough Council also have plans, subject to funding, to progress with Park Development work at Forthill and Clevereagh in the future. As a Club which requires more ground we need to make adequate representation and application for shared use in any Park Development within the Club area. Sligo Sports and Recreation Partnership. The Irish Sports Council Strategy Document: ‘’A new era for Sport 2000/2002’’, has as one of its priorities the fostering and supporting of Innovative Local Sports Partnerships designed to co-ordinate and promote the development of Sport. The Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership is acting as a consultative forum and represents the views of all local groups. There is funding available for Volunteer Training/Education and development of club and community sport, and other activities. We need to be continuously aware of the funding agencies and avail of any help that maybe available. Croke Park Development. Ten years on from the first ‘’wrecking Ball’’ swung in the direction of the old Cusack Stand, Croke Park has been transformed into a stadium that is comparable to the best in the world. Now some five years ahead of schedule, the final touches are being put to the great stadium. In recent weeks ‘’Hill 16’’ was demolished to make way for a bigger and higher terrace which will extend right across the Railway End of the ground. The fourth and final phase of the development will increase the Stadiums capacity to 82,500. The terrace is 13,000 capacity with three main access/exit areas, incorporating the same facilities that exist on the other stands. The GAA have planning permission for a new 200-Bedroom five story Hotel on Jones Road. This will be a four star Hotel and is expected to be opened within two years. Sligo Ladies Football. Well done to the Sligo Ladies Gaelic Team on winning the Connaught JFC title, and on reaching the All-Ireland Final, after a comprehensive semi-final win over Cork. In a very exciting All- Ireland Final at Croke Park, they lost narrowly to Kildare, after giving an excellent performance. Congratulations to all involved, particularly the players and the manager Kathleen Kane. 6 Marchievicz Park. Plans to develop new terracing at the town end of Marchievicz Park are well advanced and very welcome. This will be a great asset to the Park and give a completed look to the overall development of recent years. The planning for the new training ground continues at Ransboro. This will be developed jointly by the County Board and the Coolera/Strandhill Club, and is urgently needed from all County team’s point of view. Coaching. The County Board , in conjunction with Cumann na mBunscoil, Connacht Council, Sligo I.T., and the Clubs have put together a comprehensive coaching plan to make coaching available to every primary school in the County in the period February to May 2005. The National Schools in the Club area will continue to receive the Coaching which was the brainchild of the City Board, and has been in operation for the last three years. Club School liaison Officers will play a very important role in the effective delivery of this coaching project through their links with the Schools. The 3 National Schools in the Club area received coaching form the 2nd Feb 04 for fourteen weeks. This Coaching Project was coordinated by GPO Eamonn O Hara with Coaches from the Sligo I.T., who are students doing Sports and Recreational Courses. These coaches were on work placement and received payment, and they were:- Richard Feeney, Cathriona Connolly, Aaron Charles, and Rebecca Mc Philbin. Roddy Gaynor is their tutor, and they carried out the coaching in a dedicated and enjoyable manner. The funding was provided by the Clubs, County Board and Connaught Council. St Patrick’s Calry, St Brendan’s and St Edwards received this coaching. It is a requirement that all Team Managers and Coaches in charge of both underage and adult panels, should have completed a Foundation Coaching Course. It is also recommended that a Level 1 Course, which is the next progression after Foundation Level be taken. By undertaking the Coaching a uniform method of coaching and playing will evolve. Coaching and help at team organisation, school Leagues, and blitz’s in the Secondary Schools are receiving assistance from the GPO’s. All Club players should be encouraged to play Gaelic Games for their Colleges. Success at underage County level will only come through players playing competitive College Football. County U-14 Schools of Excellence and U-15 Development Squads are working to an organised programme geared towards team performance, and offers club players an opportunity to enhance and improve their skills, and raise the standard of Gaelic games. There are many opportunities for underage players to avail of coaching provided by the Club and County Board: 1. Club Coaching on Saturday mornings during the Gaelic Season-March to September. 2. Coaching form the different Team Managers and Coaches. 3. The AIB Connacht Summer Camps. 4. The City Board Summer Coaching. 5. The Coaching provided by the City Board via the Sligo I.T. Students in the local National Schools. 6. The County U-14 and U-15 developments squads. 7. Coaching and games provided by Secondary Schools. 8. Girls coaching provided by the Ladies Club Committees. 9. Hurling Coaching provided by the Club Hurling Committee. 10. City Board representative development panels. 11. Cumann na mBunscoil competitions- hurling, football, and Camogie. 12. Inter divisional competitions for U-15 & U17. Give opportunity to play at higher standard. 7 U-17 & U-15 Divisional Teams. The Inter Divisional competition, set up by the County Development Committee along with Club representatives, will take place in early 2005. The U-17 will commence on 6th Feb05, and the U-15 will commence on the 13th Feb 05. Club minor and U-16 Manager to help out the North Division, at notifying and transporting players to games. This competition is to give meaningful games to interested players, and help to bring them closer to County standard. There are plans to further expand the Inter Divisional Competitions to U-13 and more. This activity will give a more meaningful and positive role to the Divisional Boards whose functions had been reduced drastically. I want to thank Club Member Declan Caslin and his Company Bord na Mona for sponsoring the Jerseys for the North Division Team. Summerhill College 2004. Colleges football provides players with an opportunity to play football outside the confines of their clubs. It gives them a perception of Inter County football from the ages of 13 to 17 yrs. It is football in a wider context, and it bypasses the insularity of Club Football. Of course it is a two way street: the Colleges benefit, and so do the Clubs and County. Teams are now Class based, and the Senior Team can be from any of the Classes. The Senior Team were knocked out of the B Colleges Championship by Holy Rosary College Mountbellew. There were First Year Blitz’s held. Second Year played in League and Championship. Third Year reached Semi Final of Championship. Fourth Year missed out in League qualification and played in Championship. The pitch situation is difficult with the construction of the new By Pass, and the College are grateful to St Molaise Gaels and Marckievicz Park for the use of their pitches. However there is a proposal to develop two full size pitches when the road is complete, and this should help College football development and the local Clubs. It is important, that we as a Club and also parents, encourage players to play with the College Teams and to help in any way our Second Level Schools in the promotion of Gaelic Games. The teachers who give of their time to organise the playing of the games deserve our thanks. Sligo I.T. The success of Sligo I.T. senior footballers in winning the coveted Sigerson Cup for the second time in recent years is a great achievement in the competitive world of Third Level College Football. Congratulations to the players, Michael Breslin, Denis Johnson, Michael Harte and Liam Heekin, and all associated with the GAA Club in the Institute. The Sligo I.T. also won the Junior Final –Ryan Cup- in Dec. Sligo I.T. continues to work hard in the promotion of Gaelic Games. It is also very encouraging to see a Club player, Fergus Horan, on the Senior Team and we wish him well. The Sligo I.T team are now competing in the Connaught FBD League. Best wishes to the Senior Team, as they compete in the prestigious Sigerson Cup competition in March 2005. Tragedy. On March 2nd 2004, Cormac Mc Anallen passed away. Cormac Mc Anallen, 24, was a winner of All Ireland, minor, U-21, senior and Scor na nOg medals with Tyrone. He had just been appointed team captain in succession to Peter Canavan, and led his team to success in the ‘’Mc Kenna Cup’’. His death, in the prime of youth, from a sudden illness shocked the sporting world. The naming of the Trophy for the International Rules Series after the late, great Cormac Mc Anallen was indeed a fitting tribute to him. Cormac excelled in the hybrid game during his tragically short career, and I think there was absolutely no way, in the minds of the players or management , that the trophy was going to stray from its home shores in the year of its inception. Ar dheis dhe go raibh a ainm dilis. Congratulations. Congratulations to the Sligo Minor Team on winning the ‘’O’Donoughue Shield’’ for the first time ever . They beat Cavan in a very exciting and sporting Final in Pairc Sean 8 Mac Diarmada –Ck-on-Shannon on Sunday 12th Dec 04. Well done to Keith Raymond who played very well on the team and to PJ Boyd and Tommy Scanlon who were on the panel. Also congratulations to Anne Cummins on winning the very prestigious award of ‘’Sligo Person of the Year 2004’’. Bord na nOg Bord na nOg is a vital organ of the club in the promotion and development of Gaelic games. It was with great regret that a Chairman of Bord na nOg was not appointed in 2004. We must ensure that this area is not neglected in 2005. I want to thank the officers and members of Bord na nOg for their dedication and hard work during the year. I also want to congratulate them on all the training sessions organised, games played and their success on the field of play. SCOR na nOG: The Club was well represented in two events at the North Board Scor na nOg Finals in Grange and in the Sligo final in Dromore West. I want to congratulate all participants and all who took it upon themselves to organise teams for participation in Scor. It is important to ensure that the promotion of Irish language and culture are promoted at all levels within the Club. Also sincere thanks to the parents for encouraging their children to participate in Scor na nOg. Thank you to John Griffin for all your work in organising Scor participants. DISCIPLINE It is imperative that all members and supporters of our Club ensure they always have respect for fellow players, opposition players, supporters, referees and Club property. In this time of greater accountability Club members we must not bring the name of our Club into disrepute. INSURANCE: We advise all players (Juvenile and adults) and club officials to have Health Insurance cover eg. VHI, BUPA etc. before they partake in any sporting event. It is every individual’s responsibility to ensure they have adequate health/injury insurance since injury is an inherent part of sport. Players need to assume responsibility for their own wellbeing, insure themselves properly and administer their own injury claims through their own health care provider. Thanks to Mary O’Reilly for organising claim forms for injured players during the year. REFEREES: The Referee plays a key role on the field of play and must be treated with respect. We should all be prepared to play our part in achieving better quality refereeing by: - changing attitudes towards referees and refereeing; creating the right conditions for referees to carry out their duties; promoting respect for referees and the rules and desisting from abusing referees at all times. The County Board are seeking new referees and I would urge all members to encourage and support any club person who might be interested in taking up refereeing PITCH USAGE: The co-ordination of the pitch usage is a very challenging and demanding task with the everincreasing activity. Thanks to Pat Branley and Brian Maguire for all their work with Joe Keane in ensuring the pitch was inspected and closed where appropriate. All managers must ensure they liase at an early stage with the Co-ordinator in determining the times and days of training sessions and games. FINANCE: The cost of running a club is continuing to increase. Money is needed to keep the club going, to buy equipment, to cover transport, to maintain the grounds, to pay insurance and in general to service the day-to-day needs of the club. It is important that all Club expenses are pre-approved before they are incurred. If a club member intends to incur an expense or bill the club for any expenses the amount must be approved at a club meeting in advance. Lotto and fundraising: The Club LOTTO is our main source of fund-raising and I want to compliment and thank Declan Caslin, Tim Hynes and all on the Lotto Committee who work tirelessly to support the Club Lotto. Many thanks to all who sold Lotto tickets during the year or who helped with fundraising in any way. 9 • • • • • • • • • • • • • As in 2004 we will be selling our own yearly lotto tickets and we would urge all members and supporters to continue their support for this. The tickets will cost €25 and will ensure your numbers are entered in all Club Lotto draws for one year (17 draws). Membership: We would ask everyone to ensure that you pay your membership to a Club Executive Member before March 1st. Collecting membership and registering members is a time consuming job the task would be easier performed if all membership was paid on time. Thanks to all managers and coaches who collected membership from players during the year. Sponsorship: It is true to say that no club can survive without sponsorship and this club is no different. We are always on the look out for sponsorship no matter how small and all sponsorship is very much appreciated and very welcome. I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all club sponsors for their contributions during the year and to assure them that their assistance is put to positive club and games promotion and development. Henry Cox has initiated the “Who wants to be a Thousandaire” fundraiser. Preparations are already underway for this major fundraiser which is to be held in May. I want to sincerely thank Loretta Kearins for her commitment and hard work as club Treasurer. It will be important to appoint an Assistant Treasurer in 2005 to assist with club finances. COUNTY OFFICERS FROM CLUB: I wish to thank and congratulate all club members who give of their time, freely and unselfishly, in promoting Gaelic games outside the club in different County Board Committees. Tom Gallen, Brian McGauran Snr. and Brian McGauran Jnr and Seamus Cummins - members of Markievicz Park Tim Hynes - Secretary of Sligo City GAA Bord and Sligo Coaching Committee Michael Regan – PRO County Minor Bord. Henry Cox – Chairman of Sligo Hurling Bord John Lee – County Minor Bord Fixture Secretary COUNTY PLAYER REPRESENTATION: It is very heartening and encouraging to see the number of club players who wear the County jersey at different age levels in Hurling and Football increasing every year. This is surely a testament to the diligent, dedicated and committed coaching being carried out by many people down through the years and finally due to the support and encouragement of the parents. I wish to thank all the coaches, players and parents who are making the wearing of the "Black and White" a reality and long may it continue. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: Firstly, I want to sincerely thank the Club Executive for their help, co-operation and commitment during the year and for their attendance at Club meetings. I am grateful to Club Chairman, Tim Hynes, for his unselfish efforts, support and consideration during the year. I wish to compliment him on the outstanding work he is doing for the Club as Chairman. Thanks to Treasurer Loretta Kearins for all the administrative duties she has performed on behalf of all club members. Thanks to Gary Dillon, Pat Woulfe and Alo Farragher for all their efforts with news and communications in 2004. I wish to thank the following organisations and individuals who helped make 2004 such a successful year: - all team Managers, Coaches and Selectors, all sub-committees, all Officers within the club, Sponsors, Referees, Club delegates to County Board, Minor Board, Sligo City Board and North Divisional Board, Parents, Teachers, Local Clergy, Sligo Champion and Weekender, Ocean FM and Sligo Vocational Education Committee. I also want to sincerely thank Pauric Connor for his very important work in maintaining the Dressing-Rooms and surrounds to a very high standard. Thanks to Theresa O’Boyle & Eilish McGowan, (Kodak Express) who made themselves available to take photographs during 2004. Thanks to Marian Hall Committee, St. Josephs Church and Northside Centre for making their facilities available when requested. 10 The club depends on the support and shared commitments of the parents and the local community to continue its valuable and very important task of promoting and developing Gaelic games. We must never lose sight of the fact that all the clubs activities are carried out on a voluntary basis with the overall objective to ensure that a positive environment is created where every team member is recognised and appreciated for his/her unique contribution. Competitions should be controlled to produce more positive results and successful learning experiences, physical, social and emotional, for all children in an environment where involvement, enjoyment and fun are maximised. The Calry/St. Joseph's club is lucky to have so many committed people willing to give of their time freely and unselfishly to the promotion of Gaelic games that are very healthy, active and character building sports. As a community we need to continue to give support, co-operation and encouragement to all club members actively involved in club activities. I wish all club members who are sitting exams this year every success and well done to all club members who brought honour to the parish in 2004 through their many great achievements in other sporting codes. We would encourage as many members and supporters to come along to the Club Dinner Dance in the Southern Hotel on Saturday February 19th. Finally, on behalf of the Calry/St. Joseph's club, I extend sincere sympathy to all club members who suffered bereavements during 2004. Wishing you all every success and happiness in 2005. Yours in sport, ___________________________ IOSEF MACGABHANLAIGH (RUNAI) THE FOLLOWING REPORTS INCLUDE SUBMISSIONS FROM THE VARIOUS REPRESENTATIVES OF CLUB TEAMS INTERMEDIATE TEAM (Appendix 1) What a fantastic moment in the history of the club when at 4.25pm on the 10th October 2004, team captain Damien Flynn lifted the Joe McMorrow Cup in the stand of the Markievich Park amid scenes of great delight and jubilation to accept the honour of County Intermediate Champions 2004 for the first time since the formation of the club. The after match celebrations were unprecedented, and for our large band of supporters who were present in the Village Inn on our last stop with the cup on Sunday night it will be forever etched in the memories, the riveting speech given by the late Hugh McLoughlin, when he held his captive audience spellbound with an articulate account of the clubs progress from the early days, when he himself was instrumental in setting up underage structures, and together with many more hardworking people in the club, had made this momentus occasion possible. Everyone present could see that winning this trophy meant everything to Hugh before he sadly departed this life a short time later. Ar deis Dhe go raibh a ainm dhilis. 11 The Intermediate team began their preparations for 2004 when 23 players attended a meeting with management in Hazelwood on February 7th. Targets were set for the year and to win the Intermediate Championship was top of the list. Training commenced on 10th February and we played our first game on 28th February in the Benson Cup v Geevagh. We had a total of 85 training sessions, 11 league games, 8 championship games, 4 Benson Cup games, 3 challenge matches and two Connacht Club games on 3rd December and January 15th 2005. We reached the final of the Benson Cup loosing narrowly to Enniscrone on 7th June in Tubbercurry. We finished 3rd in the League with 7 wins, 3 loses and 1 drawn match. Our championship campaign began on 25th July. We won our 3 group matches with wins over Eastern Harps, Geevagh and Cloonnacool. We beat St. Pats in the quarter final and beat Enniscrone in the semifinal after a replay. Who will ever forget our two epic encounters with Coolaney Mullinabreena in the final, when after a thrilling drawn match we finally overcame their challenge in the replay on a score line of 2-6 to 1-7, to achieve the greatest success by any adult football team in the history of the club. As a follow up to our championship success we went on to represent Sligo in the Connacht club championship. On the 3rd December we gave one of our finest performances of the year when we beat the hotly fancied Breaffy by 1-8 to 0-6 on their home turf. On Saturday January 15, 2005 we then played St Patricks of Dromahair, Leitrim in the Connacht Semi-Final. After a draw a full time we went on to beat them 1-15 to 1-09 at the end of extra time in Markievicz Park. We now play Western Gaels of Roscommon in the Connacht Final on January Saturday 29th. 2005. Success does not come without hard work and what a fantastic commitment was put in by the panel of players. Many sacrifices were made by the players with a great turn out at trainings. Players travelled long distances, changed work schedules and cancelled holidays etc. All of this contributed to building up a tremendous team morale that was very evident on the field of play. The team displayed pride, passion and a never say die attitude, which are all vital ingredients for success. To have a successful team you need a good management structure, and we have the perfect combination of manager trainer Stephen Devaney, Selectors Martin Horan and Vinny Fowley, Physio Breege Scanlon. We got great support from the backroom team of Pauric O’Connor, Gary Dillon and a number of other people who were also very supportive of the team and management. 2005 will be a big challenge for the team as we move up to play senior championship football. Our aim is to go out and win every game we play, with our top priority to win the Intermediate league, and to play Senior league and championship in 2006. Finally we would like to thank our three main sponsors Kevin Keown. Bundoran Motors, Stephen Devaney Heatmerchants and Declan Caslin Bord na Mona. Congratulations to our three players Stephen Heraughty, Benny O’Reilly and Fergus Horan who are part of Sligo Senior and U21 panel. The following is a list of players on the 2004 Intermediate panel. 12 S. Heraughty, E. Kelly, D. Flynn (Captain), L. McGuinn, B. Hynes, A. Devaney, D. Mullen, V. Nally, R. Boyd, C. Nally, F. Managers: Stephen Devaney, Vinny Fowley, Martin Horan JUNIOR TEAM (Appendix 2) There was a Junior Team entered in the Div 3 League and the Junior Championship in 2004. Matches commenced on 12th May 04 and finished on 30th June 04. Played 6 League and 1 Championship game. Won 2, Drew 2, Lost 3. There were 41 players used to fulfil the 7 fixtures. Reflecting on the League, I feel we should have at least qualified for the Semi-Finals, for there were two drawn matches against Ballymote and Shamrock Gaels that we could have won. A missed free in the last minute against Ballymote, while our home fixture against Shamrock Gaels it was a scoring error by the referee which cost us the full points. The most disappointing game for me was the North Div Championship game away to St Molaise Gaels. It was one of those frustrating games where we just could not get into the game, eventhough it took extra time to finish the game. I felt it was one that was thrown away- it took St Molaise Gaels two games to win the North Board Final V St Johns. On a positive note it was good that we had 33 players eligible for the Junior Championship. At least 23 of these are under 21. This is a vote of confidence for the underage structure within the club. Overall the Junior League and Ch/ship is a very good exercise for all the positive’s:- things that are essential for club/team development, like the mixing of minors, U-21, senior and occasionally a couple of U-16’s. Most players would agree that competitive games, no matter what grade, would beat the routine of training, so junior is important for this alone. 12-05-04. Home to St Michaels. Lost 2—6 to 0—10. This was a good open game of football, but the opposition were more hungry and eager and edged in front at the final whistle. Team:G. Mc Gwynne, T. Scanlon, C. Coyne, R. Cox, K. Hynes, C. Nally, M. Gilmartin, B. O’Reilly, G. Higgins, I. Kearins, V. Nally, K. Raymond, S. Gilroy, G. O’Boyle, R. doonan. Subs- J. O’Connor, D. Gannon, T.O’Reilly, S. O’Boyle. 19-05-04:- Away to Drumcliffe Rosses Point. Lost 1—12 to 1—13. This was a game that we dominated through the field except on the score board. There were four close in frees and a number of scoring chances from play missed. The opposition were more focused and alert in front of goal and took all the chances that came their way. Team:- G. Mc Gwynne, T. Scanlon, J. O’Connor, K. Hynes, G. Higgins, A. Collins, F. Horan, B. O’Reilly, I. Kearins, B. Brennan, S. Gilroy, T.O’Reilly, R. Doonan. Subs- D. Flynn. 26-05-04. Away to Ballymote. Drew (C) 0—12 to (B) 1—9. This was another game that could have been won but perhaps a draw was a fair result. Team:-T. Clarke, T. Scanlon, D. Horan, C. Coyne, K. Hynes, B. Hynes, M. Gilmartin, B. O’Reilly, V. Nally, J. O’Connor, G. Higgins, K. Raymond, C. Nally, R. Doonan, S. Gilroy. Subs –A. Devaney, T. O’Reilly. 02-06-04. Home to St Molaise Gaels.. This game was called off by referee Eddie Waters as St Molaise had not enough players. We had 22 players available for this game. 09-06-04. away to Coolera Strandhill. Won 2—11 to 3—15. This was a game of two halves. The first half we played very poorly, conceded two soft goals, had eight wides, and were behind by 4pts at the half time whistle. There were some judicious changes made at half time and they had a big impact on the outcome of the game. We scored a couple of fortuitious goals, and in the final 10 minutes added a number of scores to edge ahead. Team:-F. Horan, C. Maguire, C. Coyne, A. Collins, K. Hynes, B. Hynes, J. O’Connor, B. O’Reilly, D. Flynn, I. Kearins, E. Mc Gowan, B. Brennan, A. Devaney, R. Doonan, C. Nally. Subs used- D. Mullin, E. Kelly, D. Gannon, L. Mc Guinn, C. Ward, and V. Nally and G. Higgins were also available. 16-06-04. Home to Shamrock Gaels. Drew 3—6 to 3—6. This was a very exciting and sporting game. Our team played with great heart and determination and could have won this 13 game. However a number of elementary mistakes were made and these were capitilised on by the opposition. Team:- S. Heraughty, S. Martyn, D. Horan, A. Devaney, K. Hynes, E. Kelly, A. Collins, R. Boyd, V. Nally, I. Kearins, G. Higgins, J. O’Connor, S. Gilroy, R. Doonan, C. Ward. Subs used- R. Leahy, C. Maguire, A. Mc Moreland. 30-06-04: Home to St Molaise Gaels. Won 0—12 to 1—7. This was a very hard, tough, physical game that went all the way down to the wire. We were fortunate to have our noses in front as the opposition missed a great goal chance in the final seconds. Team:-E. Mc Gowan, C. Maguire, E. Kelly, K. Raymond, K. Hynes, B. Hynes, C. Coyne, R. Boyd, V. Nally, C. Nally, D. Collery, I. Kearins, T. O’Reilly, R. Leahy, D. Gilmartin. Subs used-S. Gilroy. Junior Championship 04. 31-05-04. Away to St Molaise Gaels. Lost 2—7 to 2—8. after extra time. A large enthusiastic crowd turned up for this local derby, and they were not disappointed, as all that is good in Gaelic Football was on view. High fielding, good team work, great defending, great blocking, and embellished with some great scores. We were ahead coming up to full time but the fighting qualities of St Molaise Gaels forced a draw with a good point. Into extra time with the bodies beginning to show signs of strain and tiredness, the football served up was exciting even if the skill levels had dropped slightly. Both teams battled hard to win the holy grail, and St Molaise Gaels went a point up but the drama continued as we got a 14 metre free which if scored would have sent the game to a replay- however our luck ran out as we missed the free and were out of the Junior Championship. Team:- G. Mc Gwynne, R. Cox, A. Devaney, S. Martyn, K. Hynes, C. Coyne, J. O’Connor, F. Horan, D. Collery, I. Kearins, G. Higgins, K. Raymond, B. Brennan, C. Nally, T. O’Reilly. Subs; S. Gilroy, P. Scanlon, L. Mc Guinn. Conclusion:-The Junior League gives a great opportunity to keep up and coming young players, and Intermediate fringe players playing football at a competitive level. There needs to be more consistency of players commitment to the League, as we had from 13 to 22 players at matches, and we used 41 players to fulfil our 7 games. There were a number of games we could have won with a bit more luck at scoring. Thanks to the 41 players , Mary O’Reilly and Tim Hynes for their help and support. Signed: Gerry Higgins- Junior Team Manager 2004. U21 TEAM (Appendix 3) 2004 was again a year, which promised much but yet again, failed to deliver. We played 4 games in the championship. We started with a first round game against Owenmore Gaels, which was played in Kevinsfort due to both teams’ pitches been unplayable. We won this game comfortably after a few scares. In the quarterfinal we beat St Michael’s in our best performance of the year in Hazelwood. The Semi Final was played the following Sunday in Hazelwood again, and the opposition this time was Geevagh. In a hard fought match we were lucky to come away with a one-point victory against a very gallant Geevagh side. In the final we met our rivals and near neighbours Saint Johns. The final was played in Grange and we got off to the perfect start with a Donnacha Mullin goal and we led by 5 points at half time. Unfortunately we didn’t perform in the second half and failed to score, eventually going down on a score line of 2-6 to 1-5. 14 I would like to congratulate Benny O Reilly and Fergus Horan who represented Sligo at under 21 level this year. Unfortunately they and the rest of the panel were let down by bad preparation and were soundly beaten by Mayo. I would like to thank Ian Kearns, Martin Horan and Vinny Fowley for all their help during the campaign. Under 21 Panel Gary Mc Gwynne, Brian Hynes, Fiachra Coyne, Ciaran Coyne, Ciaran Maguire, Damien Gannon, Robert Boyd, Fergus Horan, Michael Gilmartin, Donnacha Mullin, Keith Raymond, Benny O Reilly, Colin O Hara, Ronan Foley, Billy Brennan, John Gaffney, PJ Boyd, Shane Gilroy, Tony O Reilly, Tommy Scanlon, Neil O Brien, Kevin Hynes Managers: Damian Flynn and Ian Kearins SENIOR HURLING 2004 (Appendix 4) STIOFAIN O’FAOLAIN (Runai Iomaint) U18 TEAM (Appendix 5) • • • • • • • • • Minor Team Report 2004. The team reached the quarter finals of the ‘’A’’ Championship and the ‘’A’’ League. There was a potential minor panel of 19 and 9 U-16 players played. Training commenced on 3-03-04 and finished on 26-08-04.There was a total of 32 Training sessions held. Attendance at Training was poor and only four minor players and two U-16 players attended more than 50% of the Sessions. There were 11 Games played :-8 in the League and 3 in the Championship. Won 3, lost 6 , drew 1, conceded 1. Minor A League 2004. 29-3-04: Away to Coolera Strandhill. Won 1—9 to 0—11. This was a hard earned victory which was fashioned by a late goal. This was very sporting and exciting match. Thanks to John Griffin who managed the team for this game. (19 players). 5-04-04: away to Enniscrone/Castleconnor. Lost 1—8 to 1—7.This was a nail biting, sporting, and exciting game of football. The lead changed hands on a number of occasions, and the result went down to the wire. This was a very gutsy and spirited performance with superb performances from Keith Raymond and Michael Gilmartin, and solid games from Tommy Scanlon and Brian Hynes. We had a number of scoring chances from frees and play to win the game, but the chances were spurned. (17 players). 12-04-04: Home to Eastern Harps. Won 1—10 to 0—8. This was a very hard hitting and tough game of football. The opposition were well up for this game. The score changed hands on a number of occasions but our players kept to the task in hand and hassled and harried the opposition. Michael Gilmartin gave another ten star rating performance and scored 1—3 from wing back. Other players to go beyond the call of duty were –Tommy Scanlon, Brian Hynes, Keith Raymond and PJ Boyd. (16 players). 19-04-04: Home to Tourlestrane. This game was called off by Referee T J Keaveney due to a very wet pitch. (14 players). 26-04-04: Home to St Johns. Lost 1—7 to 0—9. This was a game where we were always in with a chance of winning, but we were not sharp or crisp enough. The team had enough chances to win by about 10 pts, but some wayward shooting from play and frees left us chasing the game all through. Brian O Reilly played very well in goals and had a very good kick out. (16 players). 21-06-04 away to Tubbercurry.. Lost 3—8 to 3—13. The team played with great spirit and determination, and just for some wayward shooting and a few basic passing 15 • • • • • errors we could have won the game well. The match itself was nerve wrecking, and exciting, with all the team giving their best. All the players worked very hard, put in some great tackles, ran and put their bodies in the way of the onslaught from Tubbercurry. Brian O’Reilly scored a goal and Mark Hynes gave a good pass to Brian Hynes for another goal. (19 players). 24-06-04: Home to Shamrock Gaels. Lost 1—9 to 2—16. The team did not perform or were not allowed to perform. Shamrock Gaels had a very strong midfield pairing and we could not get our hands on much ball. Brian Hynes scored 1-5. (17 players). 28-06-04: Away to St Pats. Won 2—6 to 3—14. This was a fairly easy win. Shane Martyn got injured after ten minutes and was replaced by our only sub Cormac Coyne. (16 players). 12-07-04: Away to Tourlestrane. This was a quarter final of the League and all the players were contacted and the Bus was waiting at St Josephs Church. Just ten players turned up, and we had to concede the game to Tourlestrane. Thanks to the ten players who turned up:- Ronan Moriarty, Shane Gilroy, Brian Hynes, Mark Hynes, Tony O’Reilly, Brian Kinsella, Tommy Scanlon, Michael Gilmartin, Keith Raymond and Cristy Ward. (10 players). Minor A Championship. 2004. 16-08-04: 1st Round Home to Eastern Harps. Drew 1-7 to 0-10. The team played some brilliant flowing football in the first half and should have been ahead by more than the 4pts with the possession they had. The players were well up for this game, as they were well focused and very determined in the first half. In the second half the opposition were more physical and more determined, and ran at our players with great commitment. Some of our players withstood the pace and hunger of the opposition, but for many of the players their fitness levels were well exposed, as the opposition came at us in waves. To be fair to some of the players they came back and could have won the game with a 14 metre free in the final seconds but the chance was missed. This game proved that if players are not training and practising the skills, then they cannot last a full game against teams who are training. This was a very exciting game that we could have won, but the non competitiveness of some of the players in the second half gave the initiative to the opposition and they capitilised on this with open arms. There were fine performances from Keith Raymond, Brian Hynes, Michael Gilmartin, Tommy Scanlon, PJ Boyd, Ronan Cox. (20 players). • 19-08-04: Replay away to Eastern Harps. Lost 1—15 to 2—05. The team played very poorly with a strong wind in the first half, and were trailing by 6pts to 3pts at half time. In the second half against the breeze, the players put in a spirited and committed effort, but the lack of fitness of some players was again very evident, against a fitter and hungrier Eastern Harps. However the number of players who were training carried the game to the opposition, and but for some poor shooting could have been much closer at the final whistle. (16 players). • 29-08-04: Away to Tourlestrane in the quarter final of the championship. Lost 1-5 to 3-8. The team started off with great passion, determination and courage and were leading by 1-1 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. At half time we were behind by 1-3 to 2-5. The second half continued with our team playing with great spirit and contesting every ball. We had plenty of possession but found it difficult to convert it into scores. The score was pegged back to 1-5 to 2-5 with 10 minutes left. However in the final ten minutes, Tourlestrane’s superior fitness level, and greater team work, and better support play saw them finish the game strongly, and ran out winners by 1-5 to 3-8. Our teams lack of fitness was very evident in the final few minutes. (17 players). • Conclusion: The minor team reached the quarter finals of the ‘’ A’’ League and ‘’A’’ Championship in 2004. However the lack of fitness of some of the players was exposed in the later stages of matches, as the pressure and teamwork of the opposition 16 • • wore down our players resolve, and they found it easier to set up scores, which we found extremely difficult to do. Finally thanks to all the players who turned up for training and attended matches. Also a special thanks to the players who sold Club Lotto Books as part of their financial contribution towards running the club. Thanks to the parents who attended the matches and transported players and also helped as umpires and linesmen. I want to especially thank the U-16 players who played during the year, with out whom we would have to concede many matches:- Joey Scanlon, Mark Hynes, Gary McGwynne, Damien O’Boyle, Dane Torsney, Brian O’Reilly, Cormac Coyne, Stefan Callaghan, Gary Feeney. and the U-18 panel:- Brian Hynes, Shane Martyn, Shane Gilroy, Michael Gilmartin, Ronan Moriarty, Tony O’Reilly, John Mc Gowan, Niall Caheny, Oisin Mc Neela, Cristy Ward, Ronan Cox, Keith Raymond, Tommy Scanlon, PJ Boyd, Ross O’Boyle, Cris Clery, Brian Kinsella, Eoghan Mc Hugh. Also a special thanks to Martin Horan and Joe Gonley and John Griffin for their support and help throughout the year, and to physio Breege Scanlon for her professional First Aid abilities that were called upon on many occasions. County representation: Brian Hynes, Michael Gilmartin and PJ Boyd were on the Sligo Minor Panel 2004 with Brian Hynes playing at wing back in the Connacht Championship against Roscommon. Keith Raymond, Tommy Scanlon and PJ Boyd are on the 2005 Minor panel with Keith Raymond playing on the winning Sligo Minor Team at wing forward in the ‘’O’Donoughue Shield Final’’ against Cavan on 12th Dec 04. Dane Torsney and Damien O Boyle were on the Sligo U-16 County Team 2004. Managers: Tim Hynes, Martin Horan, Joe Gonley. Signed: Tim Hynes. U16 TEAM REPORT (Appendix 6) The U-16 Team played in the County ‘’A’’ League and Championship in 2004. Other teams in their group were:- St. Marys, Tourlestrane, Eastern Harps, St. Johns, Geevagh, Drumcliffe Rosses Point, Coolera Strandhill. Training was organised with the minor team, and commenced on 10 March 04 and finished on 22nd May 04. There was a very poor response to training- 13 players attended some training, and only two players attended more than half the training sessions. There were 10 games played – Won 5, drew 1, lost 4. Also played a Tournament in Ballyshannon. U-16 ‘’A’’ League 2004. 02-04-04.- Home to St. Johns. Won. The U-16 team had a hard earned win against neighbours St Johns in the league in Hazelwood. Played in strong winds and rain Calry had the better of the first half aided by the wind. Points from Brian O’Reilly, Damien O’Boyle and a goal from half forward Daniel Dolan gave Calry a half time lad of 1-5 to 0-2. In the second half the tables turned and aided by the wind St Johns came back and started knocking over the scores. Calry however battled on and only for some good saves by the St Johns keeper Calry might of had an easier victory. With a minute left the scores were level but a fisted point from midfielder Damien O’Boyle gave Calry the win. Good performances were had by Damien O’Boyle, Stefen Callaghan and Daniel Dolan. 09-04-04.- Away to St. Marys. Lost. Played in windy conditions our team had the better of the first half exchanges are were up by 4 points at the interval after an excellent goal from midfielder Damien O’Boyle when he ran from the halfway line and played a one two with Benjamin Ramsey before burying it in the net. In the second half we were up by 2 points with about 10 minutes to go when St Marys got a goal and aided by the wind they went on to claim victory by 3 points. Team on duty: B.O’Reilly, M.Harte, J.Scanlon, M.Hynes, M.Fowley, D.Torsney, J.Keown, D.O’Boyle, S.Callaghan, M.Halton, D.Dolan, T.Kelly, C.Coyne, B.Ramsey, B.Mc Govern SUBS M.Dillon, C.Feehily, S.Gilmartin, A.Foley 17 16-04-04.- Home to Eastern Harps.- Won. Our U-16 team had a good win over EasternHarps in Calry. Calry had a good start with a goal from towering full forward Brian O Reilly.O Reilly was Calrys scoring machine in the first half as he got 2-2 of Calrys 2-4 by the interval. In the second half Harps started to advance forward and picking up scores but Calry kept putting the points over the bar and in the end Harps first half display was there downfall. Final score Calry/St.Josephs 3-11 Eastern Harps 2-4 23-04-04.- Away to Coolera Strandhill.- Won. he U-16 team had an excellent winover Coolera/Strandhill. The first half belonged to Coolera and they out played Calry and at half time they lad on a score line of 1-4 to no score. In the second half a determined Calry side came out. We started well with a well taken goal from full forward Brian O’Reilly. This got our boys going and we started to eat away at Coolera’s lead. Midway through the second half we were level with Coolera and points from Damien O’Boyle and Brian O’Reilly sealed the win. Final Score Calry/St.Josephs 1-7 Coolera/Strandhill 1-4. 30-04-04.- Home to Drumcliffe Rosses Point. Won 1—11 to 1—13. Our team played some tremendous football and showed great character to carve out a result from this game. Down 1—3 to 1—8 at half time and playing against a breeze, they had to pull out all the stops in the second half to secure victory. In the second half they upped their game and played with great spirit and determination, and went on to win the game by 2 pts. Daniel Dolan scored some marvellous short and long range frees, and Brian O’Reilly got some great scores. Team:- Brian Drury, Eoin Rooney, Joey Scanlon, Mark Fowley, Dillon Henry, Dane Torsney, Joseph Keown, Mark Hynes, Stefan Callaghan, Cormac Coyne, Daniel Dolan, Mark Halton, Thomas Kelly, Brian O’Reilly, Benjamin Ramsey. Subs- Conor Griffin, Michael Harte, Colin Feehily, Mark Dillon, Daniel Feehily. 07-05-04.- Home to Geevagh. Won. Our under 16 team had a good win over a gallant Geevagh team. Calry dominated the first half with two goals a point from Brian O’Reilly. Calry went on to open up a big lead despite the efforts of a hard working Geevagh team. In the second half Geevagh kept working hard and were awarded for their hard work with a bizarre goal when the ball was rolling into keeper Gary Mc Gwynne’s arms when it hit a divot and hopped over the stranded Mc Gwynne. Gary got his own back when Geevagh were awarded a penalty which McGwynne excellently saved. Calry then kept attacking and getting the scores they needed to win. Final score Calry/St.Josephs 3-13 Geevagh 1-3Scorers: Brian O’Reilly 2-4 Damian O’Boyle 0-4, Cormac Coyne 0-2, Gary Feeney0-1, Mark Halton 0-1,Martin Ward 0-1,Benjamin Ramsey 1-0 14-05-04. The team played with great hunger and determination and could have won. However a draw was a fair result. 31-05-04. Replay of League Semi-Final. Away to Tourlestrane in Tubbercurry. Lost. Again the team started off with great spirit and took the game to Tourlestrane, and got some great scores. As the game progressed the opposition kept the pace up and kept running at us in fours and fives, and they ran out winners. U-16 ‘’A’’ Championship 2004. 23-05-04.Away to Tourlestrane. Lost heavily. Tourlestrane were much fitter, more determined and hungrier to get a result from this game. Our lack of fitness was very evident in most areas of the field as the opposition ran at us in waves, and had a number of well taken 18 scores on the score board before our players got off the mark. Team:- Brian Drury, Mark Fowley, Joey Scanlon, Eoin Rooney, Joseph Keown, Dane Torsney, Martin Ward, Damien O’Boyle, Gary Mc Gwynne, Mark Hynes, Daniel Dolan, Mark Halton, Thomas Kelly, Brian O’Reilly, Stefan Callaghan. Subs:- Benjamin Ramsey, Orry Torsney, Gary Feeney, Colin Feehily, Daniel Feehily, Mark Dillon, Conor Griffin. The Team played in a Tournament in Ballyshannon and performed well. Conclusion: This panel of players have great potential, but it will not be realised without much more commitment to training. There is no easy way to get fit, but as a group it would be much easier. Finally thanks to all the players who turned up for training and attended matches. Also a special thanks to the players who sold Club Lotto Books as part of their financial contribution towards running the club. The teams participation in the U14 County League however came to a somewhat premature end. There were a number of factors which contributed to this. Firstly a home game against Curry on the 16.6.04 was abandoned by the stand in referee. The team continued its participation in the League and remained unbeaten. Results were as follows: 21.5.04 -Calry defeated Shamrock Gaels -2 pts 28.5.04 -Calry defeated Bunninadden -2 pts 1.6.04 -Calry -V- Enniscrone -postponed due to exams, both teams agreed to re fix match. 4.6.04 -Calry w\o Castleconnor -2 pts 11.6.04 -Calry drew with Ballyrnote -1 pt 15.6.04 -Calry defeated Drumcliffe -2 pts 18.6.04 -Calry -V- Curry -Match abandoned -see report. 25.6.04 -Calry -V- Coolera -Match postponed at Cooleras request as they were involved in Feile Hurling Comp -to be replayed. 2nd\3rd\4th July, 2004 -All Ireland Feile Competition in Tyrone. On the week of our return from the Feile Competition I became aware that the Minor Board had made the pairings for the League Semi Finals. To my astonishment, Calry\St Josephs, still with 2 games to be played and an abandoned match, the points for which were undecided, were 19 deemed to have finished 4th in their group and out of contention. I immediately contacted Minor Board Fixtures Secretary who confirmed that the pairings were made at the recent Minor Board Meeting. I enquired how the pairings were decided and he informed me that the League Table shown in the Sligo Champion dated the 30.6.04 were in fact used. This showed: Curry -8 played -8 won -16 pts Drumcliffe -5 played -4 won -8 pts Ballymote -7 played -4 won -8 pts CalrylSt.J -4 played –3 won – 6pts I told him that this table was incorrect and that Calry had at least 9pts, having played 5, won 4 and drawn 1. This was enough to have finished in 2nd place and did not even take into account the two remaining matches which were to be replayed or the outcome of the needlessly abandoned game against Curry. Drumcliffe manager, Martin Gallagher, confirmed in writing that they had in fact finished in 3rd spot in our division. In the other division, according to the Minor Board Statistics, St Farnans were on top with 12 pts and St. Johns were in second with 8 pts. However P.J.McGarrigle, manager of St. Johns confirmed to me in writing that they should have finished top, having won all their matches. Despite now having all this information the Minor Board insisted on going ahead with the Semi Finals on the 13th July. The Semi finals were played- Drumcliffe beat St. Farnans while St. Johns beat Curry. The Final was not set until the 27th July. I again contacted members of the Minor Board and suggested that the matter could still be resolved if Calry were allowed to play Drumcliffe to decide who should contest the Final with St. Johns. This arrangement was quite acceptable to Drumcliffe and St. Johns. All parties attempted to get a meeting with the Minor Board to try and arrange this. After many phone calls the Minor Board agreed to meet on their own to discuss the proposal. No meeting took place. However after several more phone calls a meeting was arranged on the eve of the league final. This meeting was attended by myself and Calry\St. Josephs chairman, Tim Hynes. The Minor Board were represented by C. Feehily, M. Donnellan, M.Regan No report from the referee was produced. Tim Hynes asked the remaining members, M. Donnellan and M. Regan why Calry U 14's could not have been treated the same as Tourlestrane U 18 team. They found themselves in a similar position, not having completed all their matches, however after representations made by their officials they were allowed back in to complete the minor competition. I was aware that this precedent had in fact been set last year when St Johns U 14 team found themselves in exactly the same position as ourselves. They had competed in Feile, failed to complete their league programme, but after representations were allowed to re enter the U 14 competition. The minor board dismissed our claims. They informed us that the Final would go ahead-the following evening and that I would have to appear at a disciplinary hearing at the next Minor Board meeting. I said that I would be glad of the opportunity to find out exactly why the referee had abandoned the game in question. I rang Mr. Donnellan the night before this meeting was due to take place to confirm the venue but he informed me that as I had not received any notification in writing about it I should not attend. To date no disciplinary meeting has taken place nor have I been notified of any such hearing. As you can imagine I feel angered and frustrated by these events by the way an important league match was abandoned by a referee, however even more frustrating and alarming has been the actions of the Minor Board since that which has ensured that the Calry U 14 team were not allowed to contest the latter stages of the U 14 league despite the fact that everyone else involved saw and understood that they had a legitimate right to do so. You will have been aware of the huge effort made by management to prepare this talented U 14 team, the dedication and commitment made by both players and their families to months of training and the efforts of the Feile Committee who gathered thousands of euro in sponsorship to eventually send this to Feile to represent Sligo in Tyrone This is in stark contrast to the Minor Board who succeeded only in denying young enthusiastic players their legitimate right to play and compete in Gaelic Games. They have left officials, managers, players and parents in this Club totally frustrated and wondering if the sacrifices made to prepare teams, encourage and promote Gaelic Games in this Parish have been in vain or are in any way appreciated by the members of this Board. Is it any wonder that young players give up playing Gaelic games and opt for other codes instead. I believe that the Minor Board, in this case, had an ideal opportunity to gain everyone’s admiration and respect by taking all the facts into consideration and allow Calry to complete their league campaign. 20 However they failed to do this, allowed their judgement to be clouded and in doing so, I believe, acted unfairly and unjustly towards the Calry\ St. Josephs Club. U-14 FEILE NA NOG 2004 The U-14 team began training in March 2004 in preparation for the Feile na nag competition. In the first match we played a strong Curry team on the 28.3.04 and eventually won a close match on a 2-7 to 1-8 score line. The second round match away to Castleconnor, played on one of the worst days of the year, ended in a comfortable win for Calry 2-15 to 1-7 after a close first half. In the Semi final we were to play Grange at home in Hazelwood, however as the pitch was unplayable arrangements were made to have it played at the Sligo I.T. pitch instead. Great credit is due to Gerry Dalton and his staff at the I.T. for facilitating the Club at such short notice by putting this wonderful pitch at our disposal. Both teams were delighted to have the opportunity to play at this venue and the wide open spaces seemed to suit the Calry players as they ran out winners on a 7-7 to 3- 3 scoreline. The Final was fixed for the 3.5.04 n Markievicz Park against Enniscrone, the team that had beaten us in the Championship final two years previously at u 12 level after a replay and extra time. On this occasion however Calry had the upperhand and despite being behind by a point at half time they finished the stronger with a great overall team performance. The final score was Enniscrone 2-7 Calry 3-9. This was a wonderful achievement for the team and was only the second time in the Clubs history that Calry\St. Josephs would represent Sligo at the National Finals of Feile na nog. A Fundraising Committee was immediately set up to raise the substantial amount of money that was required to send the team to the Finals, held this year in Tyrone. The Committee members, Geraldine Flanagan, Teresa o Boyle, Gerry McGinley, John Griffin and-Rory Leahy approached a number of businesses in the area requesting sponsorship. Three main sponsors were identified: Bus Eireann -Sponsored set of Rain Jackets. Sligo Credit union -Sponsored set of Polo Shirts. Sligo Dairies -Sponsored set of Kit Bags. Other generous sponsors included Kevin Quinn -The Embassy, Declan Caslin -Bord na Mona, Jim Flanagan\Gerry Lyons, Sean Feehily, Vincent Nally -Brooks Hanley,Nicky Brujos -Jako Sports, Sligo Champion, Tom Forde -G.H.Q., AIB Bank, Raymond 0 Boyle -Power Right, Derry Taheny Electric, Mullen & McLoughlin, Michael McMorrow, Sam Hire, Harry Clarke L.M.S. Oil, Stanley Nairn -Heiton Buckley, Ulster Bank, Right Price Tiles, Davey Motors, McCormack Car Sales, Brendan Mullen, Stiefel Laboratories, Top Part Auto, McHales Sawmill.A Disco in Calry Hall was also organised which brought in 1290 euro and members of the U 14 panel each sold a number of Lotto Tickets which boosted that months sales considerably. In Total money raised by the Committee was in excess of 4000 euro -A magnificent effort by all concerned in a short space of time. The Feile Competition was held over the weekend of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th July, 2004. Our host Club was Castlederg, an Intermediate Club just across the border from Castlefin in Donegal. With the aid of our Logistics expert Brian Maguire, we identified two possible routes to Castlederg. On Brians expert advice and on consultation with experienced driver Joe Keane it was decided to avoid the route through the bandit territory of Fermanagh and so we opted for the scenic route through Donegal instead. 21 On arrival in Castlederg we were met by Harry Brennan, manager of the senior and U 14 teams. We were treated to a sit down meal in the local hall and afterwards the boys were introduced to their host families who they were to stay with for the weekend. The hospitality and friendliness displayed by the Castlederg Club and Harry Brennan in particular over the whole weekend was truly unbelievable. A bus was provided to transport us around the various locations during our stay -thus saving us a lot of money. On Friday evening we played our first match in Feile against the local Castlederg side and with great performances from Aidan Devaney in goals, Gavin Luby, Kazim Clarke and Fintan Keown in defence Conor Griffin and Brian McGovern in Mid field and Kevin Devanney in attack we won by 4 points, 2 -6 to 1 -5. The team then headed off to Carrickmore to take part in the Feile Parade -a wonderfully colourful occasion where a total of 156 teams sporting their Club colours and banners marched through the crowded streets to the Carrickmore pitch. Here the assembled teams were introduced to the G.A.A. president Sean Kelly and other dignitaries and were presented with a pennant to mark the occasion. We were then taken back to Castlederg where everyone was put to bed early in preparation for an 11am game the following day. This game was against another Tyrone team, Glenelly and was played at their home pitch. Despite being well in control of this match we failed to convert many chances and eventually had to come from behind to draw a low scoring game 0 -5 to 1 -2. Scores coming from K. Devaney (0-1) C.Griffin (0-1) ,J. Toher (0-1), M.Toher (0-1) ,D.Murray (O-l).An injury to key midfielder Brian McGovern meant that we were forced to field a weakened team against the fancied Longford Gaels team in the Final match an hour later. The Longford champions were a very big and fast team and although we initially contained them 3 quick goals set them on their way and they eventually ran out easy winners. Calry finished in second place in their group and did not qualify for the finals, however the team acquitted themselves well and enjoyed the whole Feile experience. Any lingering disappointments at the defeat to Longford Gaels quickly evapourated with the prospect of the Disco in Castlederg later that evening where the St. Pauls Girls team from Belfast were also attending. The hard training throughout the year certainly stood to the boys as they more than held their own in the dancing stakes and did their bit for the Peace Process by forging some Cross Border Links. Tim Hynes completed the evening by making a presentation to the Castlederg Club and thanked them for all their hospitality and kindness. The weekend was indeed a memorable one made all the more enjoyable by the great encouragement we received from the dozens of parents who travelled to Castlederg to support the team. Thanks also to supervisors Michael McDermott, Rory Leahy, Gerry McGinley Martin Horan and Pauric Connors, who travelled with the team and kept everyone in check. Hopefully this young team can emulate the last Feile winning team from Calry and produce stars like those who are currently representing the club so well on the Intermediate team. U-14 CHAMPIONSHIP Calry defeated St Farnans after the first round of the championship after a replay. We were forced to play a weakened side against Drumcliffe in the semi final as many players were missing. In fact we only had 14 players at the start of the game and had to play an U 12 player who was there as a supporter. Despite a great effort by the team we were beaten by two points. Drumcliffe went on to win the Championship.U.14 Panel 2004:Aidan Devanney, Barry 0 Boyle, Conor Griffin, Niall McDermott, Sean Higgins, Brian McGovern, Kevin Devanney, Martin Toher, Joseph Toher, Gavin Luby, Fintan Keown, Darren 0 Hara, Gearoid Kelly, Patrick Flanagan, Dean McGowan, Sean McGinley, Ronan 0 Brien, Colm Devanney, Darren Murray, David McGurrin, David Cox, Kazim Clarke, Peter Martin, Daniel Leahy, John Gerrard, Kevin Buckley, Michael Healy, James Kinsella, Michael Higgins. To their credit the panel were focused and determined to do well during the league. The ambition was to try and get to a league final. The league commenced in April2004 and we had a home match against St Marys and we ended up beated by a point. St Marys scoring a goal in the dying seconds. Indeed that goal was to prove costly to Calry St Josephs as it prevented us from reaching the league final. The league was divided in two groups – A and B, Calry St Josephs were in Group B. The full fixtures for 2004 were: 6/4/04 Calry St Josephs 4-8 St Marys 5-6 13/4/04 Calry St Josephs 2-9 Mullinabreena 3-9 20/4/04 St Farnans 4-6 Calry St Josephs 3-7 27/4/04 Calry St Josephs 5-7 Tourlestrane 2-6 11/5/04 Grange Cliffoney 3-4 Calry St Josephs 5-8 18/5/04 Calry St Josephs 4-10 Curry 3-7 25/5/04 Drumcliff Rosses Point 2-11 Calry St Josephs 3-12 We played 7 and won 4. We had to depend on other results for us to get to a league final which did not happen. Championship 2004 In the first round of the championship we were drawn against Curry and the match was played in Curry. It was an ideal evening for a match, little or no breeze, and all credit to Curry the pitch was immaculate, well marked, umpires linesman well attired. Calry St Josephs put in a huge effort for this game and indeed going by the performances during the league we were expecting a big game and looked forward to a win. The match was over as a contest after 15 minutes even though we tried hard and everyone gave it their all, Curry completely dominated the game and seemed to be physically and mentally stronger in every sector of the field and ran out convincing winners. It was a huge dissapointment for so many parents who traveled with such high expectations. U12 Panel 2004 Eamonn McHale, James Connell, Kieran McNasser, Patrick Heraughty, Tommy Casey, John Melvin, Paul Melvin, Jason McGowan, Donal Rooney, Daragh McConnell, Kevin Gilmartin, Brian Cunningham, Eoin Doherty, Caolan lowery, Andre Gorman, Paul Healy, Christopher Woulfe, Patrick Woulfe, Owen Nicholson, Michael Flynn, Johnaton McGoldrick, Michael Martin, Sean McGill, David Verdon, Mark Dolan, Glen Cryan, Liam Devaney, Mark, Kelly, John McGurrin, Stephen McDermott. I would like to thank the following for their help during the year. To Mary o’Reilly and Breedge Scanlon who assisted with first aid at every match. To Padraic O’Connor who had the dressing rooms in immaculate condition for our home games. To the many parents who made themselves available to bring young footballers to matches and who supported the team during the year. And finally to players who gave of their all during 2004. On a regrettable note I have to say that during the year a number of the Calry St Josephs players represented their club and county in conjunction with other clubs as part of a city board idea. I’m not fully sure if the idea is to foster good relations between the clubs or to improve Gaelic Football at underage level, what I do know is that it is frustrating and annoying that the people selected to manage the underage teams had no input what so ever in to 23 selecting who traveled from the club to these matches, and what was more frustrating is that the management didn’t even know that members of the underage team were playing certain matches. Maybe the management team are deemed adequate enough to train, coach and manage a team within the club but on a bigger picture not up to it. Finally I would like to wish the club every success in 2005 and I would like to congratulate team and management on winning the 2004 intermediate Championship. Success breeds success and it is important that the club build on the success of 2004. Signed: Eddie McHale Managers:- Vincent Melvin, Eddie Mc Hale, Pat Woulfe. The team had a goods win over Rathcormac in the first round and then had a narrow victory over Carraroe in the second round. On the strength of this they qualified for the county semi final where they narrowly defeated Kilmactigue in an excellent match in Tourlestrane. In the county final they played Dromard and despite being short three first team players gave an excellent account of themselves only loosing by one point. The panel of players were: Donal Lowry, James Flanagan, Danny Keown, Joe Smith, Gearoid Keaney, Jason Finnegan, Ryan McDermott, Jonathan Dolan, Patrick Woulfe, Darragh O Brien, Oisin Kilgallon, Niall Stenson, Conor Heraghty, Joseph Farrell, Ciaran Stenson, Aisling McDermott, Gearoid McDaid, Tiarnan McMorrow, Stephen Fallon and Eoin O Neill Manager: Pat Stenson U-10 TEAM:(Appendix 11) The U-10 team competed in the North Division League during 2004 reaching the semi-final stage. This ran from April to June. The team played 8 games, winning 4 drawing 2 and losing 2. They lost narrowly in the early stages of the competition to St Johns who subsequently beat Calry again in the semi-final by a wider margin. Overall they gave a good account of themselves during the league. Panel: Ryan Bashir, Conor Caheny, Edward Connell, Michael Cryan, Andrew Dodd, Johnaton Dolan, Joseph Farrell, Jason Finnegan, James Flanagan, Paul Healy, Conor Heraughty, Gearoid 24 Keany, Danny Keown, Oisin Kilgallon, Kyle Luby, Gearoid McDaid, Aisling McDermott, Ryan McDermott, Stepehn McDermott, Tiernan McMorrow, Eoin Nicholson,, Darragh O’Brien, Ciaran Stenson, Eoin O’Neill, Niall Stenson, Barry Verdon,, Patrick Woulfe, Donal Lowry. Managers: Gerry Tuohy, Frank Connell. U-9 TEAM:(Appendix 11A) The under 9’s Gaelic football team participated in this year’s City Board Winter League played in September and October. In the league phase they played St. John’s, St. Mary’s, Drumcliffe and Coolera/Strandhill. Following this they qualified for a play off against Drumcliffe for a semi-final place. In an excellent second half performance they turned a five-point deficit into a three-point win. However in the semi final they were defeated by the eventual winners St. Mary’s. The panel of players involved were: Donal Lowry, Gearoid Keaney, John Bartley, Joe Smith, Eoin McGovern, Jason Finnegan, Stephen Fallon, Danny Keown, Ryan McDermott, Darragh O’ Brien, Joseph Farrell, Ciaran Stenson, Conor Heraghty, Gearoid McDaid, Aaron Flynn, Ryan Feehily, Oisin Harney and Barry Verdon Manager: Pat Stenson BORD NA NOG (Appendix 12) The Bord na nOg AGM was held on 11th February last year. At that meeting Joe Keane stepped down as Chairperson, Pat Branley stepped down as Treasurer and Brian Maguire informed the meeting he was taking a break from underage coaching. Team Managers elected at the AGM were as follows: U-9/U-10 Frank Connell, Gerry Tuohy, Pat Woulfe, Pat McDermott; U11/U-12 Vincent Melvin, Pat Woulfe, Eddie Mc Hale U-14 John Griffin, Rory Leahy; U-16 Gary Dillon, John Griffin Tim Hynes; U-18 Martin Horan, Joe Gonley, Tim Hynes. There were only 2 other meetings held during the year and unfortunately there was no Chairperson elected for 2004. A great deal of credit and thanks is due to everyone who helped to train, manage, coach, provide first-aid, physio, transport and support for all of our under-age teams throughout the year and on behalf of the Bord na nOg Committee I wish to compliment all of our teams on their dedication and commitment to the playing of our National games. Thanks also to the Community Games Managers for the year. In 2004 our U-14 team qualified for Feile and I would like to congratulate the Feile Fundraising Committee who gathered a lot of sponsorship for this venture. Special thanks to Manager John Griffin and coach Rory Leahy on bringing this team to All-Ireland Feile in Co. Tyrone. Several Fundraising activities organised by Bord na nOg members during the year included 2 Bag-Packing in Tesco; 2 Discos; Lotto Sales; Table Quiz with Quizmaster John Griffin in Calry Hall; Flag Day on 7th August which will be held by the Club in future. Coaching continued in the National Schools of the parish – a successful week long Camp was held in Summer – a Coaching course was well attended in the I.T. in March. Thanks to Cumann na mBunscoil for their organisation and promotion of Football and Hurling in the schools of the Parish. I would like to thank everyone involved in the promotion of Scor na nOg within the Club and congratulate all the participants and winners. Thanks to our Senior Club executive for their support of underage activities in the Club. Special thanks to Padraig Connor for his management of the Dressing Rooms. Also to pat Branley for cutting the pitch. Finally, if underage Gaelic is to continue at the high standard it has enjoyed in recent years in the Calry/St. Joseph’s club every child attending training needs to be represented at the forthcoming Bord na nOg AGM by at least one parent. My thanks to fellow committee members for their help during the year. Is mise, 25 Treasa Ui Bhaoil CALRY JUVENILE HURLING REPORT:(Appendix 13) Last year was another good year for Calry/St. Josephs young hurlers, with the U12 reaching the (A) County Final, and the U 14 winning the County League Final and contesting the championship final. The U 12s reached the County League Semi- Final with a great win over Naoimh Eoin, but were defeated in the semi-final by Tourlestrane. In the U12 championship, they defeated Owenmore Gaels and Geevagh to set up an (A) County Final against Coolera. The final itself was played in wet conditions at Markevicz Park in front of a large crowd. Calry/St. put up a great performance, and were unlucky to loose the game to a larger, more physically strong Coolera side by score of 3-1 to 1-1. The U-14 had a great win against Coolera in the County League final, which was played at Kent Park in very blustery conditions. The team trailed by 4 points at half time after playing against a strong breeze, but dominated the second half. After some nail-biting moments near the end, they held out for a famous and well deserved one point victory. Both sides met again a few weeks later to contest the Championship final. This again was a tough encounter competed by two evenly matched teams, however Coolera just shaded it at the final whistle. In the U-16 Competition the Calry/St.Josephs side were defeated in the final by Coolera. The club were well represented on the U-16 County scene, with 6 players from the club involved with the county panel. Great work was done through out the year with the underage teams. This was evident at trainings, which were attended by large numbers throughout the year. Sincere thanks must be given to all trainers and selectors for giving their time throughout the year, and also to the parents for their co-operation and support during the year. Looking ahead to this year, with the same commitment by all 2005 should be an even better year for the club. Signed: Eamonn Lonergan Ladies Football 2004. Congratulations to the U12 and U-16 teams for winning their titles last year: U-12 team on winning their League final against Castleconnor at St.Nathys pitch and to the U-16 team on winning the B Championship. In the final they too fought off the challenge of Castleconnor at Tubbercurry. During the year a number of members attended refereeing and coaching seminars. A number of fundraising activities were also organised and thanks to all who sold ´guess the score tickets` and who helped out at the clubs well organised weekends of bag packing and flag selling. We would also like to thank the following businesses and indivduals who sponsored us during the year: Avenue Moulding, Pearse Road Tyres, Fyffes, Heiton Buckley Building Suppliers, Walshe Bros. Plumbing and Top Part Motor Store. In particular, we would like to thank Pauric Oates of Oates Brehony Group for his sponsorship of the Junior jerseys. This was a momentous year for Ladies football in Sligo as the Junior Ladies team reached the All-Ireland Final for the first time in ten years. A bus was organised by the club to join in the occasion and an exciting finale to the match very nearly saw Sligo win the game. However Kildare held on to their lead and emerged as winners. We would like to congratulate Sligo manager Kathleen Kane, Selector Shane Quigley and the County Board for their commitment to the game. It was a great motivation to see the girls we play at club level on the field at Croke Park. In particular we would like to congratulate Niamh Mannion who trained with Calry/St.Joseph’s at Underage level. The future of Calry/St.Josephs representation at County level looks promising as many of the underage girls have donned the black and white this year already. Katie Scanlon, Siobhán Whyte, Michelle Lehany, Noelle Hynes, Lucy Foley, Gráinne O’Reilly, Niamh Deehan, Laura Goonan, Helen Gilmartin, Cailin McConnan and Helen McGurn have all represented Sligo on the football field. We would like to wish Pauline Rooney well after sustaining a serious injury during a Junior match in the Summer against Ballymote. Best wishes also to Emma Kilgallen who has been unable to play this year and we hope to have both these fine players back for selection this coming year. We would like to extend sympathy to all members who suffered bereavements during the year. With much enthusiasm in the community towards Gaelic football, there promises to be another action packed season ahead and we hope to get everybody out training. New members are always welcome and we look forward to our first session. Calry/St.Josephs Ladies team who played Curry . The Calry girls dominated the game until the last 10 min. when we allowed Curry in to score 3 goals but Calry reasserted their class in the final minutes and won the game 1-11 to 3-1. The championship was played during the months of July and August. The squad was very depleted due to holidays, injury etc. On one occasion only 13 out of the panel of 26 players were available. Despite this, participation was very worthwhile as the matches benefited our newer and younger players greatly and though they preformed magnificently we did not qualify for the knockout stages. We also participated in the Community Games U 12 competition. The Calry area panel was:Aisling Gilroy, Aoife Nicholson. Jennifer Gilligan, Ruth Davey, Shauna Torsney, Laura Keon, Aisling McDermott, Amy Devaney, Katie Gilligan, Katie McHale, Rachel Carr, Hannah Davey, Winnifred Feeney, Julie McMorrow, Amy Moody, Niamh Byrne, Saoirse Byrne, Rebecca Duffy, Hazel Higgins, Shauna Devaney. They had an easy victory in the first match against Gurteen but were beaten in the next round by Castleconnor. The F.B.C.R. area made valiant efforts this year to enter a team but their panel had only 10 players: Martina Crummy, Sarah Crummy, Amy Norman, Jasmine Temple, Megan Walsh, Grainne O Reilly, Jenny Foley, Gemma Verdon, Sinead Keaney, Edel McGowan. Many thanks to Ruth Walsh and Cathriona O Reilly for their work in this area – maybe next year! Despite our success, there is concern over the low participation levels in the urban area of our club as teams are drawn almost entirely from the Calry N.S. pool of players. With this in mind the blitz which was held in the I.T. grounds involving the 3rd and 4th classes of St.Brendans, St.Edwards and St.Patricks is a wonderful step in the right direction. This initiative by the national school principles and involving Eamonn O’Hara was enjoyed hugely by all the children. We are grateful to Ballinode College who allow us to use their pitch. This also helps the participation of girls from our urban area. Thanks to Frances Conlon and Gorana Leahy for all their help in the past year. Welcome on board to Michelle Leheany for the coming year. Many thanks to all the parents who were forever available and willing to help with transport etc. Congratulations to the girls and teachers of Calry N.S. who followed last year success in the Cumann na mBunscoils 7+ teachers competition with another decisive win. And they also won the Sligo mini-7s competition. Comhgairdeas!!! Signed Deidre Quinn LADIES U-14 (Appendix 16) In the league we did quite well and finished second in our group, We beat Eastern Harps and Shamrock gales, lost by a point to Castleconnor. We were in the A championship which worked against us as we had strong opposition - St Nathys, Castleconnor again and Tourlestrane. We did not win any games in the championship. In one of games we had to conceed the points to tourlestrane as even though we booked the pitch the minors were scheduled to have a game on the same day. I tried to contact the pitch co-ordinator to confirm we had the pitch and could not get him. In the end rather than argue with minors for the pitch I cancelled our game with Tourlestrane who were not very happy and refused to agree to re-fixing it so we had to conceed. 28 I think the booking of the pitch is something that should be looked at as on another evening again I had booked the pitch. We turned up and an U-10 boys final was on. I had to delay our match for 45 minutes on that occasion. Thanks to all the players and all who assisted the team during the year. It is vitally important that all people- juveniles and adults –involved in the Club be fully paid up and registered members of the Club for a number of reasons. Players or Officials will not be covered by Insurance. 1. Players are not legally entitled to play for a team unless they are fully paid up members. 2. Opposing teams can object to a player/team who is not a Registered Full Member. 3. The Club and/or other teams can be suspended if found guilty of playing an un registered player. 4. All Club supporters should be Registered Members if only to demonstrate their support of the Club. 5. The new proposed All Ireland Ticket Allocation will be based on the number of Club Members. 6. Club membership demonstrates the strength and support for a Club. All Ireland Ticket Distribution. The adoption of new GAA Membership procedures at the recent Special Congress could lead to a fairer allocation of tickets for All Ireland Finals. GAA Director –General Liam Mulvihill expressed the hope that once the GAA established the true membership of the association, the Ticket allocation will be fairer and more accurate. He said:- ‘’ It will be very easy to do this from now on, by linking it directly to the Club Membership, rather than linking it to the number of clubs, that are registered in a particular County. We will be able to know how clubs compare in terms of the amount of registered members that they have. They will be taken into consideration in terms of the number of tickets that are allocated, both on a County and on an individual Club levels. Knowing the actual membership will give us a fairer system of administering many aspects of the Association as we go forward ‘’. Managers should not allow players to play in competitions or train until the player has paid their membership fee. Closing date is March 1, 2005. The rates for 2005 are as follows: Family €40, Adult €20 and Students / Juvenile €10. Family rate includes children up to 18 years of age or adults above this age in full-time education. Registrar: Pat Woulfe THE LOTTO:(Appendix 18) The year 2004 started with a Lotto Jackpot of €4,450. The Jackpot at the end of the last draw in Earley’s on the 17th Dec 04 was €7,000. The Yearly Lotto Draw Tickets purchased at the start of the year were a tremendous help in getting the Club off the ground financially- at a time when the Club has to pay out approx €10,000 for :- Team Affiliation, Insurance, County Board contribution, Public Liability Insurance, referees etc. This is before the Club spends any money on pitch maintenance, transport or any direct Club running expenses. The Lotto Committee is very thankful to all the people who purchased the Yearly Lotto Tickets. The tradition of getting each Club Team –players and management team- will need to be re activated in 2005. if every person involved in the club- players, team management and Club Officials sell one book of Lotto Tickets during the year, this will go a long way in easing the Club Finances along with other Club Fundraisers. Pat Branley stepped down as Club Lotto Co-ordinator after twelve years of dedicated and loyal service. He is still part of the Lotto Committee and we are very grateful for his help. 29 Sincere thanks from the Club Lotto Committee to Pat for his tremendous work down through the years. Thanks to all the premises who we were grateful to hold the 17 Club Lotto Draws in 2004. Also thanks to all who sold and purchased Lotto Tickets, and we are open to any suggestions that might improve the Club Lotto Draw. From the Finance/Lotto Club Committee. Costs of running a Club are continually on the increase and it now takes approx €11,000 to Register all Teams, pay Insurance and the County Board contribution. The goodwill and generosity of the above Lotto Ticket buyers is very much appreciated. Tim Hynes SCOR na nOG: :(Appendix 19) The club was represented in two categories at the North Divisional Scor na nOg competition held in Grange hall on 21/11/04. Laura Keown took part in the solo singing while Thomas Kelly, Connor Griffin and John Gilligan made up the question time team and qualified for the county finals in Dromore West. Patrick Flanagan replaced Thomas Kelly who was on holidays. The team finished a credible 3rd out of 6 teams at the county finals but did not qualify for the connacht finals. Fermanagh embarked on a voyage through the qualifiers that took them past:- Meath, Donegal, and, unthinkably , Armagh. The same Armagh team that sent shock waves through the Championship, with a performance against Donegal in the Ulster Final which, in its fusion of power and skill, broke the sound barrier. The Armagh V Fermanagh game was the most sensational game of the season,-played out like a Hitchcock movie, every time the plot shifted, you thought you could sense the direction the game was taking, but every time you got it wrong. Finally the coolest man in Croke Park – Brewster- pulled the trigger and the ground shuddered with the impact. Tom Brewster was the hero, and football was the winner. Fermanagh reached the All Ireland Semi-Final, for the first time in their history. Westmeath won a Leinster Final for the first time in their history. Kerry won the All Ireland with a performance that combined wonderfully the modern and the traditional game. The power, pace, and defending were out of the contemporary manual. Colm Coopers goal in the All Ireland final was a perfect moment. –‘’Gooch’’ is a star. 34 Mattie Forde illuminated the GAA year along with Fermanagh, and Westmeath. Two teams who resurrected their championship ambitions via the qualifiers, contested the All Ireland Hurling Final- Cork and Kilkenny. Cork recalled a former All Star- Brian CorcoranGreat players are highly adaptable, which is why Corcoran became the second hurler , after Brian Whelehan, to win an All Ireland in defence and attack. Tributes to Retired Club Members. By Tim Hynes. Three senior Club Members, who between them have given 80 years of outstanding, dedicated and loyal service to the Club, announced their partial retirement from Club activity.. They have served the Club in different capacities, from playing, administration, coaching, at county level, and fundraising. Indeed these are the type of people who over the decades have edified the GAA, giving it the extra layer of quality and class which signifies that the GAA is more than just a mere sporting organisation. These people are taking time out to smell the roses, but I am sure they will be available to help out at some Club activity in the future. They are Brian Maguire, Jim Flanagan, and Pat Branley. Brian Maguire. Brian has served the Club and especially the young players very well over the last twenty years. He has kept the U-10 Calry Community games Gaelic football alive and healthy, since he moved out to Hazelwood. He has also looked after the U-9 and U-11 teams for many years. He has been ever present out in the pitch every Saturday morning during the coaching season, training and imparting the skills of the game, always with a smile and good humour. Brian’s contribution to the Club is enormous and difficult to quantify. Just to say that the Intermediate success of 2004 has come about partly from Brian’s hard and committed work down the years, along with many other committed Club Members. Brian is also a handy man, and these skills have served the Club well down through the years, decorating the Hall and doing technical maintenance on the pitch. He continues to help out at Club and City Board level. Brian has also received the ‘’Michael Mooney commitment to Youth Award’’, from Michael Mooney and the Sligo City Board, as recognition of his trojan efforts in the promotion and development of Gaelic Games, at Club and City Board level. Brian has a keen interest in Hurling, and he has served as Treasurer of the Club Hurling Board, with efficiency and tact for many years. Brian is also a very proud Fermanagh man, and he was overcome with joy and excitement as Fermanagh reached the All Ireland Semi-Final for the first ever. I want to thank Brian for his commitment, help and dedication down the years and looking forward to his continued participation and help into the future. I want to wish Brian and his partner Phil and family many years of good health and happiness. (Tim Hynes-Club chairman). Jim Flanagan. Jim Flanagan has been an active member of the Club since its foundation in 1972. Indeed he was one of the founding members of the Club, and played for the Club in his younger years. Jim’s contribution to the development of the Club has been in many guises:- as a player, as a founding member, as a fund raiser, as a coach, as a sponsor, at field maintenance and development, as a County Board delegate. 35 Jim served as the Club’s County Board delegate for several years, and was also a member of the County Activities Committee and the County Referees Committee. Jim has been, and still is, one of the most consistent person to attend the Club Lotto Draws since it started twelve years ago. Jim has vast experience of the running of the County Board and indeed the Club, he is always willing to share this knowledge when required. Jim has still plenty to offer the Club and hopefully we will see him continuing to help out at Club level for many years to come. I want to thank Jim for his commitment, help and dedication down the years and looking forward to his continued participation and help into the future. I want to wish Jim and his partner Geraldine and family many years of good health and happiness. (Tim Hynes-Club chairman). Pat Branley. Pat Branley is one of the legends of the Calry St Josephs GAA Club. Pat has also been one of the founder members of the Club and has served a stint as Chairman of the Club. Pat was one of the driving forces behind the purchase of the field at Hazelwood and indeed is one of the trustees. Pat’s enormous efforts for the Club have been in many guises:-brief encounter with underage refereeing, as a Team Selector, Ciste Gael organiser, Club Chairman 1979/80, Club Registrar for many years, Club Treasurer, club delegate to the Co Board, member of Co Board Activities Committee, North Board delegate and Chairman, fundraising, pitch maintenance and development, Club Lotto Co-ordinator for twelve years. Pat was a candidate for the Mayoral election in 1980 to raise funds for the purchase and development of the pitch, and for the record Brigid Fowley became the first Mayor of Calry. His ‘’physique ‘’ also became the subject of a lottery later – ‘’Guess Pat’s Weight Competition’’ which raised badly needed funds for the Pitch Development. Pat has lived through the birth, the growth and maturing of the Club- securing the field, the Scor successes, growing youth involvement, park development, and there was no prouder man in Marchievicz on the 10th October when Damien Flynn lifted the ‘’Joe Mc Morrow Cup’’ and claim the first County IFC title. Pat has put in a tremendous effort in his role as Club Lotto coordinator and later years as Treasurer in keeping the Club Finances healthy. His continuous care to the maintenance of the Field is exemplary, as he endeavours to keep the playing surface in good shape for hurling and football. Pat is a true Gael, and totally committed to the objectives and aspirations of the GAA. His total commitment for over 34 years, to the promotion and development of the GAA Club is enormous and thankfully he is still helping out at the Club Lotto and the pitch maintenance, and hopefully this will continue for many years. I want to thank Pat for his commitment, help and dedication down the years, and looking forward to his continued participation and help into the future. I want to wish Pat many more years of good health and happiness. (Tim Hynes-Club chairman). Obituary to the late Hugh Mc Loughlin. By Tim Hynes- club Chairman. We paid a final farewell to Hugh Mc Loughlin on 17th November 2004. Hugh was a man who will forever be remembered for all the right reasons, by his family, his many friends, his neighbours and particularly by our community in Calry St Josephs. Hugh Mc Loughlin has left a legacy behind that he can be extremely proud of. He has reared a fine family, has worked hard in his profession as a builder, a trojan worker for the community, and a lover of all things Irish. Hugh was a very proud Drumkeeran man, and he was also a proud Leitrim man – and one of his proudest moments was when Leitrim won the Connaught Final in 1994. 36 He moved to Hazelwood in the early 1980's and it was then he got heavily involved in promotion of Gaelic Games. A great family man- he worked hard, and was very professional in everything he did. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of sport, and a deep interest in a broad range of subjects, especially music, politics and history. His loyalty to his friends and colleagues was a feature of his human nature. He brought a strong sense of fair play, from the football field to all aspects of his life. He epitomised all that is good in human nature – honesty, hard work and loyalty, Hugh possessed these qualities in abundance along with integrity and a sense of humour. We all have some wonderful memories of Hugh which we will always treasure, as he brought nothing but pride, glory, honour, and goodness to his social and business life. Hugh was without question one of the most decent, most obliging, level headed person I have met. There was no Prima Donna stuff with Hugh, and no airs and graces. He was a rock you could depend on. In the early 1980’s Hugh Mc Loughlin got heavily involved in juvenile coaching. It is from this foundation that the current high level of participation commenced. In 1987 the first underage North Divisional Title was won. In 1988 following a recommendation from the City Board, Hugh took a leading role in the setting up of structures to organise and engage the youth of the full Parish, consisting of Forthill, Ballytivnan, Cartron and Calry. Hugh has given sterling service to the Club down the years at many levels: coaching, fund-raising, technical assistance, fieldwork, sponsorship, City Board, County Board, transport and administration etc. He has been Chairman of Bord na nOg and the Senior Club for over twenty years. One of Hugh’s finest moments was the Official Opening of the Pitch by the President of the GAA Jack Boothman on Sunday 14th April 1996. He was Club Chairman and a very proud community man that day, as he understood the significance and the importance of a good GAA Club to a community , and that the Club is the life blood of all activity in the GAA. Other note worthy achievements under Hugh’s watch were: (1) In 1987 he received the prestigious CIBA-GEIGA GAA Clubman of the Year Award for County Sligo. (2) In 2001 The Club won the AIB Sligo Club of the Year Award . In his role as Club chairman he met four GAA Presidents- in 1987 he received the Sligo Club Person of the Year Award from President John Dowling(RIP), -In 1996 GAA President Jack Boothman Officially opened the pitch,-In 2000 GAA President Joe Mc Donagh attended the Club Annual Social, and in 2001 Hugh received the Sligo Club of the Year Award from GAA President Sean Mc Cague, and he had a close family connection with the late Dan O’ Rourke of Drumkeeran and later Roscommon, who gave sterling service to the GAA, as President in the years 1946 to 1949. It was a fitting testament to Hugh’s many years of toil, when the Intermediate Team won the County Championship for the first time ever on 10th Oct 2004. Hugh was unable to attend the replay due to another engagement, but he was the proudest man in the Community when 37 Captain Damien Flynn brought the ‘’Joe Mc Morrow Cup’’ to his house that evening. Even in his failing health he clearly understood the milestone that was achieved, and forgot about his illness and celebrated the occasion. All who knew him in any capacity morn his loss, and are the poorer for his passing. We offer our sincere sympathies to Hugh’s wife Nancy, children- Fergal, Killian, Orla and Anne Marie. They can justly remember him with pride and affection. His untimely death was a loss of immeasureable magnitude, to his wife and family and the community. May his gentle soul rest in peace. Ni beidh a leithid an aris. Ar dheis Dhe go raibh a ainm dhilis. Signed: Tim Hynes. Tribute to Anne Cummins. Anne Cummins of Hazelwood received the prestigious award of ‘’Sligo Person of the Year for 2004’’. This was a richly deserved award, and gave due recognition for her twenty years of dedicated and unselfish service to the Samaritans. The completion and official opening of the Samaritans new Head Quarters, on the Mall, was viewed as testament to the hard work and commitment, of the newly crowned ‘’Sligo Person of the Year 2004’’. Anne gave many sterling years in the 70’s to the promotion of Scor and Irish Culture for the GAA Club, and was County Secretary of Scor, and was an active Connacht Council Scor Member. Along with organising Scor at Club, County, and Connaught level, she also participated at singing and question time. The question time team contested four All Ireland Senior Scor Finals and lost Finals by the narrowest of margins. It was a proud night for Seamus and Anne Cummins, and their family, when Anne received the very well deserved award of ‘’Sligo Person of the Year 2004’’. The community is privileged to have people like the Cummins family in their midst, as they exude genorisity and a sense of caring for neighbours and the community. They are truly great community role models. Finally well done to Anne Cummins and to Seamus and family on Anne’s justly deserved award. Tim Hynes(Chairman.)
