Introduction
On top of the growing residential population are the additional
10 million overnight and daytrip visitors to the Coast per year who
buy everything from fashion and jewellery to food and liquor.
The Gold Coast’s 43,000 businesses which supply this vibrant
marketplace are themselves a large market for business goods
and services. On one hand, the continuing high growth of the
Gold Coast provides marketers with ongoing opportunities. On the
other, it attracts more competition which creates a need for
marketers to continually advertise the competitive benefits of the
products and services they are selling. Many of the new arrivals
may never have heard of your company or your products and they
are buying – today!
The Gold Coast market has its own identity which is as different
from that of the nearest capital city, Brisbane, as Canberra is from
Sydney. Similarly, advertising in Brisbane papers to cover the

Inserts
Higher readership & retention
Size specifications
There's no question that catalogues and brochures are important marketing
tools, but in order for them to perform effectively they need to be read.
All inserts must conform to maximum and minimum sizes shown
as follows.
Research proves that consumers actually read newspaper-inserted
material more thoroughly and with greater attention than letterbox
distributed material. In fact, 72% of those who recalled the newspaperinserted material stated that they actually read it, compared to 54% for the
letterbox-distributed material*.
General notes on the size-specification tables below:
*Source: Quadrant Research Services
1. Any single sheet (at max size) under 180gsm must be folded neatly in half.
2. Four and eight-page tabloid products must be quarter folded. Prior to
acceptance, all other tabloid products must be inspected to determine
whether a quarter fold is required.
3. The fold must be situated on the longest side of the product
i.e. Insert 200mm x 180mm wide – 200mm must be folded (spine) of
this product.
4. The substance weight (gsm) should increase as the insert increases (eg:
height and width, not number of pages).
Rates & deadlines
Packing identification
The retention rate of catalogues and brochures once they get in the front
door varies depending on the method of distribution. 58% of all readers
retain at least one newspaper insert a month and there is also a tendency
for readers to pass on these inserts to other consumers*.
Sun Community Newspapers
1. The printer must ensure that all inserts are free from “set-off” and that
the ink is dry.
2. Inserts must be kept as flat as possible at all times, with tight folds, and
free from rolled edges, wrinkles or other distortions.
3. Inserts are to be turned in 50s, 75s, 100s, within a bundle, so that the
height is between 75mm to 100mm.
4. Bundles may be strapped from top to bottom (not around spine), single
tie only (the wider the strapping the better). The tension of the strapping
should not in any way damage the bundle.
5. The use of a sturdy piece of cardboard at even intervals throughout
the stack will help keep the inserts flat, and avoid shifting during
transportation. Gaps between bundles on the pallet should be kept
to a minimum.
6. Outside edges should be vertically even and protected by cardboard.
The inserts should be stacked, so that they do not protrude beyond the
limits of the pallet.
7. If the pallet does not have a solid, smooth base, a piece of wood or
a substantial piece of cardboard should be placed over the pallet
before stacking.
8. A solid piece of wood, the same dimensions as the base pallet, should
be placed on top of the stacked bundles, to prevent strap damage.
9. The pallets should be cross strapped four ways.
10. The pallet should be wrapped in plastic, or shrink-wrapped, for
further protection.

Disclaimer: Due to the nature of the press, trim sizes are an estimate only. Please make sure that text and logos stay
within the live image area to prevent cropping when trimmed. Horizontal wide ads bleed to the bottom only. An extra
5mm bleed is added to the width in case the ad moves from a left to right hand position. This is done so you won’t have
to re-supply artwork. Please contact your Advertising Rep for a bleed template to design your ad correctly.

Colour & Print Reproduction Disclaimer: The Gold Coast Bulletin does not guarantee
colour matching or ink density on digital (screen) proofs or hard-copy colour proofs.
Because of differences in equipment, paper, inks, and other conditions between colour
proofing and production pressroom operations, a reasonable variation in colour between
colour proofs and the completed job is to be expected. When variation of this kind
occurs, it will be considered acceptable performance. You must provide high-resolution
images suited to the web printing process. The Gold Coast Bulletin is not liable for
images printing pixelated when this is caused by customers providing low-resolution
images. The Gold Coast Bulletin is not responsible for any colour shift that occurs in
conversions from RGB to CMYK colour modes. Gold Coast Publications print to PANPA
Specifications have been developed by PANPA’S Technical Advisory Group (TAG).
The Technical Advisory Group consists of representatives from member newspaper
publishing companies with technical backgrounds and expertise in pre-press, and press
processes. The complete technical print and reproduction specifications can be found at:

are advised to study the Act carefully, in particular Sections
52 and 53. The primary responsibility for ensuring that
advertisements comply with the Act rest upon the advertiser
and the agency submitting the advertisement for publication.
10. PROSTITUTION ACT 1999
The Queensland Government's Prostitution Act of 1999
restricts the advertising of licensed brothels and prostitution
services. Part 6, Division 4 of the Act prohibits:
• Advertising of prostitution services in a form that is
descriptive of the services being offered.
• Advertising that contains statements intended or likely to
induce a person to seek employment as a prostitute.
• A provider of prostitution services from holding out, or
causing to be published an advertisement that states directly
or indirectly that the service provider's business is connected
or associated with 'massage services'.
Terms and Conditions
Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd reserves the right to refuse the
publishing of Adult Services website addresses.
Any advertising of prostitution services must be in an approved
form as decided by the Police Commissioner of Queensland or
the Prostitution Licensing Authority of Queensland. An advertiser who does not comply with the above conditions is likely to
commit an offence under the Act. Gold Coast Publications Pty
Ltd reserves the right not to publish advertisements that may
not comply in full with both the intention and letter of the Act.
11. REAL ESTATE AND MOTOR DEALERS

Agents and Motor Dealers Regulation 2001, and
Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd expects its advertisers
to comply with these requirements regarding false and
misleading representation.

be transferred or accessed by agencies with the expressed
written permission of the client in question. Gold Coast
Publications Pty Ltd reserves the right to ask for documentation
in this regard.

ordered, no liability can be accepted for misplacement or

Publications Pty Ltd in electronic, printed or other format is
subject to copyright and may not be reproduced in whole
or part without the express permission of the publisher.
The advertiser assumes all responsibility for attaining
copyright permission for any material not produced by
Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd.
16. INTERNET ADVERTISING POLICY TO COVER
ADVERTISING FOR INTERNET SITES
The policy on Internet advertising is as follows:
16.1 General, Aggregated or Portal Sites
• These sites are welcome to advertise in our newspapers
in news pages or the relevant 'Internet Services' or 'Internet
Classifieds' classification within classified pages.
Classified Web sites:
16.2.1 • These sites include any publication, electronic or
otherwise that seeks to act as a medium between buyer and
seller or two parties of potentially common interest regardless
of the publications business model. Classified web sites include
sites where the product and/or service listings from entities not
controlled by the publisher forms more that 25% on the site in
total by delineation of content and/or functionality/purpose.
16.2.2 • These sites may advertise in news pages or in any
of the following classifications:
–‘Internet Services’ in the general classifieds
–‘Real Estate Internet Services’ in the Real Estate liftout
–‘Careers Internet Services’ in the CareerOne liftout
–‘Motoring Internet Services’ in the Carsguide liftout
16.2.3 • Subject to clause 4.3, these sites may advertise
in the appropriate classification where the ad in question
relates to a specific product or service and conforms with
clause 4.2 and clause 6 of this policy and clause 17 of
Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd Publishers Conditions.
16.3 Client Sites:
16.3.1 • If a client is advertising just their site then those
advertisements should appear either in general news or in
the relevant ‘Internet Services’ section of the classifieds. For
example, an advertisement advertising a client site, where
the site has jobs on it, is not an employment advertisement,
and therefore should not appear in an employment section.
16.3.2 • If a client advertises their site as part of a classified
advertisement where the purpose of the advertisement is to
advertise a good, service or opportunity other than a website,
url address or email address, the client may place the
advertisement under a classification other than the relevant
'internet services' classification, provided that 75% of the
overall advertising space of the proposed advertisement
consists of information other that the advertiser's url
address or email address. (For example, in an advertisement
designated for the employment section, the subject matter of
the advertisement must be appropriate to the classification
and the url address or email address can take up to no
more that 25% of the overall advertising space, if the
advertisement is to appear as a classified advertisement
under the 'employment' classification).
16.3.3 • Client sites do not include pages from sites that
can be categorised as Classified sites as previously outlined.
These sites can be identified as page extensions where the
host forms part of the address. Site extensions with their own
specific url address are acceptable where no mention is made
of aggregated on-line classified listings.
16.4 Email Address/Web Address:
16.4.1 • With the exception of Adult Services sole operator
advertisers and the instances outlined above, the inclusion of
url addresses/company details is acceptable in all areas of
the paper subject to the publisher's terms and conditions.
16.4.2 • For url addresses in classified advertisements the
following rules must be followed.
16.4.3 • The url must form part of the normal address
details on the advertisements, which must include alternative
methods of contact, usually telephone and mail address or
telephone and email address.
16.4.4 • The url must take up not more than 25% of the
volume of any display or lineage advertisement in classified
columns as per clause 3.2.
16.4.5 • The url can be the general url of an aggregated or
classified site but must not be a page url for an aggregated or
classified site, if the address is within the classified columns,
other than ‘Internet Services’ or ‘Internet Classifieds’.
16.4.6 • Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd reserves the right to
refuse to publish an advertisement in the classified columns,
other than ‘Internet Services’ or ‘Internet Classifieds’,
when it believes that the advertisement is not a true
classified advertisement (e.g. job, home or car for sale)
but is merely an advertisement to ‘drag’ readers to an
internet site. This should be read together with Clause 17 of
Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd publishing conditions.
16.5.2 • The exception to this ruling is where an
intergovernmental agreement exists within a jurisdiction
with like legislation or the site is licensed by the
Queensland Government.
16.6 Sites of Other Publishers:
16.5.3 • In the case of a print competitor, if our newspapers
will not carry advertisements for the print product, then
those same newspapers will not carry advertisements for
a similarly branded online product.
16.5.4 • Where a print competitor owns, either partially or
fully, an internet site that is branded entirely separately from
their print products, then that site will be treated like any
other online site and advertising and advertising placement
will be in line with all other aspects of the Gold Coast
Publications Pty Ltd internet policy.
16.7 Application of Guidelines:
• An ad will be deemed to be an ad for an internet site
when the aggregate content of the ad relating to the web
site exceeds 25% of the ad's make-up, either in space or in
reference across all areas of our publications.
16.8 Denigrating Copy:
• Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd reserves the right to reject
copy that denigrates our own products. Copy that promotes
the attributes of the publication without comparison to our
own publications, generic or specific, is acceptable.
17. CLASSIFIEDS
The newspaper advertising classification system exists
for the benefit of the readers and advertisers alike.
Readers are easily able to find the information they
are looking for while advertisers can be easily located
by the readers they are seeking. Requests to advance
advertisements out of the prevailing sort policy or to place
advertisements ‘out of classification’ (e.g. place a car ad in
CareerOne) diminish the utility of the classification system
and thus denigrate the product an advertiser may be
seeking to advantage. Accordingly, Gold Coast Publications
Pty Ltd will not knowingly false sort or otherwise dilute the
purity of its classification system. Where sufficient market
demand exists, new classifications can be opened to suit the
needs of groups of advertisers at Gold Coast Publications
Pty Ltd’s discretion.
Advertising containing any of the following elements will be
considered career advertising, and therefore must be placed
within the Classified CareerOne section.
• Lists a specific role, or roles.
• Outlines suitable candidate criteria.
• Gives any indication of remuneration.
• Provides contact details (in relation to responding to
a position/required criteria).
• Supplies a timeframe in which applications must
be received.
In addition, any brand advertising would also need to provide
a pointer to the CareerOne listing.
16.5 Gaming or gambling sites:
18. PRIVACY STATEMENT

advertisements promoting games of skill or chance in whole
or part where their player interacts with the site in return for
a reward dependent in whole or part of skill or chance.

16.4.8 • The Queensland Police Powers and Responsibilities
Act 2000, the Classification of Computer Games and Images
Act 1995, and the Classification of Films Act of 1991 have

in which ‘objectionable material’ is promoted or available
