This year our members Lorraine Smith and Doug Holmes will have the Victorian and Tasmanian Pioneers Indexes on CD ROM, and the Irish Transportation Index on computer. I would think there will be a rush on the fiche of burials at the Melbourne General Cemetery - we thank the A.I.G.S. for allowing us the use of this resource. I know I look forward to the Seminar as this is a great way of learning in a relaxed manner. I suppose it is fair to say that on such a day I get the feeling that I would like to live in Melbourne, but on reflection Warrnambool is a good place to live. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Doug. ************************************** RESEARCH SERVICE We are able to provide a research service for those with ancestors in Warrnambool and the surrounding district. Requests for research should be directed to our Research officer, Betty Beavis, at our postal address given on the front page of this newsletter. The research fee is $10.00 per hour and it is advisable to enclose a cheque for $10.00 with your initial enquiry as you don't make it onto the queue until the fee is paid. Disbursements for photocopying etc, will be billed at the cost incurred by our research staff. Our Research officer has access to our own resources collection which includes a card file of over 15,000 cards, the resources of the Warrnambool City Library, Warrnambool TAFE Library, the Warrnambool Campus Library of Deakin University and the Reference Library collection of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum. Local Historical Societies and Libraries at Koroit and Port Fairy can be accessed if necessary as can Warrnambool Historical Society. ************************************** MICROFICHE FOR SALE Warrnambool Branch has so far published two sets of microfiche based on death notices appearing in newspapers, these microfiche may only be purchased from the Branch at the address given above. Happy hunting, Irene Sheppard Secretary ************************************** EDITORIAL The next issue of 'The South West Genealogist' will be my last as editor and I would like to reflect on the changes in the Warrnambool Branch during that time. At the beginning of 1990 the Branch introduced two major changes, the imposition of a local membership fee and the production of 'The South West Genealogist'. All the resources of the Branch including the microfiche readers resided in one steel cabinet at that time, how things have changed. At last months meeting we signed up our 95th local member for the year, on average membership has increased by 25 members a year for the past three years. We should exceed 100 financial members by the end of this year. The resources are bulging from three cabinets, thirty odd card filing drawers, the equivalent of two cabinets on the Flagstaff Hill bookshelves and all of the microfiche readers, the microfilm reader and the computer are located in the library proper not in the cabinets. It all seems unbelievable. Changes as described above don't just happen, they come about through the hard work of Executive members and members of the Branch Management Committee and a team of volunteers who do what needs to be done. Next year we will see some members of the Executive and Management Committee retire from their positions, ill health has prompted Gloria Van Baaren not to continue as Treasurer, Robyn Gray will continue in the position until next years AGM. Our super Research officer, Betty Beavis has indicated that she will not be standing for re-election next year as she wants time to pursue some of her own research, although she will continue to produce the Warrnambool Historical's' column in 'The South West Genealogist', due to recent changes in my own circumstances I may not be in a position to continue next year only time will tell. All of the changes alluded to above mean that some new members will have to slip into the vacant positions next year, if you feel you can assist have a talk to Marie and find out just what is involved, specific tasks and procedures have been developed over the past couple of years which allows the whole organization to run fairly smoothly, it can be very satisfying when you see the results that have been achieved over the past few years. ************************************** THE IMPORTANCE OF EXCHANGE PUBLICATIONS Warrnambool branch exchanges newsletters with something like thirty other similar societies around Australia, we have just commenced exchanging with the Austlind Branch of Genealogical Society of Western Australia, for example. From these exchanges we learn quickly of changes in prices and addresses, the existance of new resources by scanning accession lists of these other groups, we have access to research articles from specialists we would not normally encounter on all sorts of topics. Read the exchange publications, you may be pleasantly surprised by what you find. Loses tools. ************************************** WANTED - NEWSLETTER EDITOR I have decided to step down as editor of the the 'South West Genealogist, with issue 50 which will be the November issue and the last for 1994. 1 feel that five years is a long enough term in the job and that it's about time someone else had a go. If you feel you would like to have a go please have a chat to Marie or myself. Most of the copy is now generated by a team of writers, Marie. Betty and Irene, so its now just a matter of typing it all in and laying it out to fit into the ten page allocated. February and November issue usually stretch to twelve pages. The following equipment is required, a computer with an ink jet, bubble jet. laser or daisy wheel printer or access to one. Dot matrix printers are very hard to photocopy from and are not very suitable. currently a daisy wheel printer is used with a 12 cpi daisywheel.
