Dear Friends,
For LEE & LOW, this past year has been a banner one for awards. Brothers in Hope: The Story of the Lost Boys of Sudan received a
Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award Honor, and Arrorró, mi niño: Latino Lullabies and Gentle Games received a Pura Belpré
Illustrator Award Honor. Poems to Dream Together/Poemas para soñar juntos was named an ALA Notable Children’s Book and
received a Jane Addams Children’s Book Award Honor. Our books garnered many other honors this year, all of which are displayed
on our Web site (leeandlow.com/books/awards.html). Please take a look!
As you read this letter, the last of our exciting 2006 titles are being released. True to our mission, we continue to promote new
talent, this year with Little Sap and Monsieur Rodin, the first children’s book by both the author and illustrator. We are also delighted
to be publishing new works by children’s book luminaries Eloise Greenfield and Jan Spivey Gilchrist (When the Horses Ride By:
Children in the Times of War), Demi (Su Dongpo: Chinese Genius), and Benny Andrews and the late Jim Haskins (John Lewis in the
Lead: A Story of the Civil Rights Movement). Rounding out our offerings are new books by award-winning LEE & LOW veterans Ken
Mochizuki and Dom Lee (Be Water, My Friend: The Early Years of Bruce Lee), and S. D. Nelson (Quiet Hero: The Ira Hayes Story).
We are proud to offer young readers these stories that captivate, inspire, and display the very best of human qualities. We feel a
responsibility to publish these works and provide a perspective on current events. There have always been bad times and tragic
occurrences in our world, but these times were made better by people who stood their ground or took up a cause. Individuals like
John Lewis, Bruce Lee, Ira Hayes, and Su Dongpo have been called many things, but we remember them best as heroes who made
our world a better place.
Thanks to all of you who read, recommend, and purchase our books. Your support ensures that our mission of publishing
books that make a difference in young readers’ lives continues to be a reality.
Peace,
Tom

GROWING UP IN HONG KONG IN THE
1940s and 1950s, young Bruce Lee had an active mind,
boundless energy, and a knack for finding trouble. As
he grew older, Bruce also developed an interest in
martial arts. He thrived on the grueling training but
struggled to understand and apply the principles of
gentleness and yielding that the master taught. Only after
he set sail for the United States at the age of eighteen did
Bruce truly embrace the values of martial arts and discover his
own path to inner calm.
Bruce Lee eventually became a pioneer of martial arts cinema, and his legacy lives on in popular
culture. But it is his boyhood journey toward self-discovery and his courage to overcome obstacles that
will inspire all who search for their way in the world today.

GROWING UP ON THE GILA RIVER INDIAN
Reservation in Arizona, Ira Hayes was a quiet, shy boy. He
never wanted to be the center of attention, and at school he
often felt lonely and out of place.
By the time Ira was in his late teens, World War II was raging. When
the United States entered the war, Ira joined the Marine Corps. He believed it was his duty to fight honorably for his country, and with his marine buddies by his side, Ira finally felt as if he belonged.
Eventually they were sent to the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, where a chance event and an
extraordinary photograph by Joe Rosenthal catapulted Ira to national awareness and transformed his life.
Filled with all the patriotism and tragedy of wartime and its aftereffects, Quiet Hero is the story of one
man’s courage in the face of both military and personal battles. It is a poignant tribute to Ira Hayes—
a man who was considered a hero by everyone but himself.

EVEN AS A YOUNG BOY IN ELEVENTH-CENTURY
China, Su Shih was clearly special. After finding a rare inkstone, he began to write stories and verses
expressing his love of the natural world. His words flowed effortlessly. His brush danced across the
paper.
Su Shih grew up to become a leading scholar and statesman, eventually taking the name Su Dongpo.
Integrating his love of natural order and humanity into his writings and civic works, Su Dongpo
promoted justice and condemned corruption—often at his own peril. His life was rife with reversals
of fortune; but through it all he retained his grace, his humility, and his compassion. Award-winning
author and artist Demi has created a graceful tribute to one of history’s most accomplished yet
overlooked figures. Su Dongpo’s life truly transcends the ages and is a shining example of dignity,
ingenuity, courage, and resilience.

and Illustrated by Benny Andrews

THE SON OF AN ALABAMA
sharecropper, John Lewis experienced the
injustice of segregation early in life. Inspired
to action by the words of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., Lewis joined with Dr. King and
other civil rights leaders who believed in fighting segregation peacefully. From Nashville,
Tennessee, to Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, Lewis was in the forefront of the major civil
rights protests of the 1960s. In the face of physical attacks, he persevered with dignity and a
devotion to nonviolence, helping southern black people gain the right to vote. Lewis
continued his commitment to human rights with words and action, from his home base in the
South straight to the nation’s capital. In 1986 Lewis was elected to represent Georgia in the
United States Congress, where he continues to serve today.
John Lewis in the Lead celebrates the life of a living legend of American history. Lewis’s

The LEE & LOW New Voices Award
Established in 2000, the New Voices
Award encourages writers of color to
submit their work to a publisher who
takes pride in nurturing new talent.
“The New Voices Award is a great way for
us to discover talented new children’s book authors,” says LEE &
LOW senior editor Jennifer Fox. “The contest encourages people
who might not otherwise try their hand at writing for children to
do so. The response has been strong, and nothing makes us
happier than being given the chance to celebrate new voices.”
For contest rules and submission guidelines, visit:
leeandlow.com/editorial/voices.html.
Entries must be postmarked no later than October 31, 2006
“I would like to commend LEE & LOW for initiating this search for
writers of color. Your efforts speak volumes about the importance of
aggressively seeking diversity in publishing. . . . On behalf of the
Coretta Scott King Task Force, I hope your efforts will result in
LEE & LOW submissions for consideration by the Award
Committee.”

Tips for a Successful Event
Many of our authors and illustrators are available for school/library/bookstore events around the country. Here are some tips for planning a fun and
successful author and/or illustrator event:
1. Who? If you don’t have a particular author or illustrator in mind, providing us with
details about what kind of presenter you are looking for can help us find you the perfect
author for your event.
2. What? Think about what you want your event to entail. Even if you don’t have all the
specifics, knowing what kind of event you want to hold and what your guests will take
away from the event is half the battle.
3. Where? Do you know where you would like to have your event? Location can
determine if your event is intimate, like a small reading, or large, like a school-wide
author’s panel in an auditorium.
4. When? In terms of dates, try to have a few possibilities in mind to accommodate an
author’s busy schedule.
5. Budget. Travel costs, honorariums, and book purchases are part of the majority of great
events.
LEE & LOW BOOKS has many authors and illustrators throughout the
United States who are available for events. To view a list of where
our authors/illustrators live, visit our Author Locator page on the Web
at: leeandlow.com/calendar/authorlocator.html.
CONTACT US
If you’d like to set up a school or library event, or need ordering
information, please contact Jennifer Stevens at
1-888-320-3190 ext. 29, jstevens@leeandlow.com.
If you’d like to set up a bookstore event, or would like an author to
participate in a larger event, please contact Abe Barretto at
1-888-320-3190 ext. 23, abarretto@leeandlow.com.
6. Confirm. We will send a written confirmation containing all of the details of the
event, as well as contact information for the author. Then you can finalize details of the
event with the author directly.
7. Booksales. Receive up to 50% off on your book purchase. This is a great way to offset
the cost of your event or even turn a profit.
8. Promote. Tell local newspapers, make up fliers, update your blog, and do whatever you
can to spread the word.
9. Prepare. If this is a school event, have the children read the author’s books beforehand,
so they are familiar with their work. Then assign the students questions and have them
prepared to ask them during the event.
10. Have fun! We will do everything in our power to help you plan a fun and successful
32
event. So what are you waiting for? Contact us and let’s get started!
