A LETTER
FROM OUR CEO
A LETTER
FROM ALICIA KEYS
Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate ten years
of Keep a Child Alive. Passionate and dedicated
supporters like you, teamed with the commitment of
our staff and the hope and resilience of our clients,
are the foundation of Keep a Child Alive.
In 2002 our co-founder, Leigh Blake, visited the Family
Care Clinic in Mombasa, Kenya. A woman named
Anne walked into the clinic, desperate to obtain
antiretroviral drugs for her three-year-old son, Brine.
Leigh was so moved by Anne and her courage that
she decided to pay for the treatment herself. Leigh
then reached out to Grammy Award-winning artist
Alicia Keys, and together they formed Keep a Child
Alive in 2003 to help provide children and their families
with the HIV treatment they needed to survive.
Over the last ten years, Keep a Child Alive has been
pushing boundaries and fighting fearlessly for our
clients. Since 2003, we have reached over 300,000
individuals affected by HIV throughout Africa and
India. Beyond HIV treatment, we also provide support
for nutritious food; clean drinking water; counseling
and psychosocial support; testing for HIV, cervical
cancer, and TB; orphan care and youth support
groups; and, most importantly, dignified and loving
care. We currently support nine community-based
partners in Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda,
and India.
Around the world, ten million people are now getting
the HIV treatment they need. But we have a long
way to go. Seven out of ten children who need HIV
treatment to stay alive are not receiving it. This is
unacceptable. Keep a Child Alive is committed
to supporting innovative grassroots partners and
advocating for groups whose needs are not being
met—especially children.
Over the past decade, this event has helped us raise
over $18.5 million and has brought together some of
the world’s top humanitarians and performing artists.
I am immensely grateful to the Keep a Child Alive
Board of Directors, staff, partners, and those we serve,

as well as to our co-founders—Leigh and Alicia—for
their vision and passion. My thanks to all of you for
the generous role you play in supporting ten years
of our organization.
With deep gratitude,
PETER TWYMAN
CEO
I am so humbled to be here tonight celebrating ten
years of Keep a Child Alive! During my first trip to Africa
in 2003, I witnessed first-hand the devastating impact
of AIDS: millions of children orphaned, struggling
communities, and economic progress stifled. It was
a painful awakening for me, and I knew something
had to be done. Together with the incredible Leigh
Blake, we formed Keep a Child Alive. I am in awe of
our accomplishments on behalf of children and their
families, and grateful to be a part of something much
bigger than myself.
Keep a Child Alive has long believed that access to
dignified health care is a fundamental human right.
Being poor should not determine whether or not you
have access to HIV care and treatment! This is what
drives us to support amazing programs that are
improving the lives of children and families affected
by HIV in Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and
India. Thanks to your incredible support, we have
raised over $36 million to bring the necessary love
and care to these beautiful souls.
Tonight, we celebrate the courage of the children,
young people, mothers, and fathers who access
our services. Their bravery in the fight for life continues
to be the driving force behind Keep a Child Alive.
We are working to make sure children have the future
they deserve as they move toward adulthood,
regardless of their HIV status.
I would also like to give a warm thank you to the
amazingly talented artists performing with me
tonight: I am honored to share the stage with Carole,
Kathleen, Laura, Pharrell, and Roy. I hope you will enjoy
this very special evening, and are inspired by what
is possible when we join together.
With endless love and gratitude,
ALICIA KEYS
CO-FOUNDER & GLOBAL AMBASSADOR
OUR
MISSION
KEEP A CHILD ALIVE BRINGS DIGNIFIED TREATMENT,
CARE, AND SUPPORT TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES
AFFECTED BY HIV.
OUR
STORY
Keep a Child Alive was founded in 2003 by AIDS activist
Leigh Blake and 14-time Grammy Award-winner Alicia
Keys. The organization began as an emergency
response to the HIV epidemic, raising global awareness
about the urgent and unmet need for HIV treatment
in sub-Saharan Africa, and granting funds to grassroots
organizations to provide free, life-saving treatment
to keep people living with HIV from needlessly dying.
Ten years later, our core mission is unchanged. Our
work has since grown to include the care components
that we know are necessary to support successful,
life-long HIV treatment: comprehensive clinical care,
psychosocial support, nutritious food, and loving care.
We now provide financial and programmatic support
to nine innovative, community-based partners in
Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and India.
OUR
FAMILY
PROGRAMS WE SUPPORT
KENYA
The Family Care Clinic in Mombasa is where the
vision for Keep a Child Alive was born. The clinic
began as a pilot program in 2001 to bring much-needed
services to children living with HIV. Known as the
“Mombasa Model,” the successes of the program
demonstrate that “keeping a child alive” is not only
a moral imperative, but an entirely feasible one.
Twelve years after its founding, the clinic provides
comprehensive HIV care and treatment to 1,200
infants and children living with HIV.
RWANDA
Keep a Child Alive is proud to partner with Women’s
Equity in Access to Care and Treatment (WE-ACTx)
for HOPE, founded after the 1994 genocide to provide
medical care to women and children. We support
the WE-ACTx for HOPE clinic in Kigali, which offers
comprehensive HIV care and treatment services to
children, young people, and adults. The clinic offers
dignified psychosocial and mental health services,
nutritional support for children living with HIV, skills
training and income-generating services for women,
and innovative peer education programs for children
and adolescents. The WE-ACTx for HOPE Clinic currently
serves 2,250 clients, including 1,780 clients on
antiretroviral therapy.
SOUTH AFRICA
The Blue Roof Wellness Centre in Wentworth, Durban,
is the first clinic wholly owned and operated by Keep
a Child Alive. The Blue Roof provides comprehensive
HIV care and treatment services, as well as HIV testing
and counseling, tuberculosis treatment, adherence
and psychosocial support, and cervical cancer
screening. All clients receive a hot, nutritious meal
when they come for services, with the Blue Roof
kitchen serving some 1,500 meals each month. The
Blue Roof serves nearly 4,000 children, young
people, and adults, over half of whom are on
antiretroviral therapy.
Also in Durban, we support Operation Bobbi Bear.
Bobbi Bear works on behalf of children who have
been sexually abused to minimize their risk of HIV
infection at the point of rescue, ensure their health
and well-being, and bring their perpetrators to justice.
Bobbi Bear’s court-approved approach, which uses
a teddy bear for children to describe their abuse,
has helped thousands of children tell their stories.
Each month, Bobbi Bear programs and services
touch the lives of over 2,500 children.
In Soweto, Johannesburg, we support Ikageng Itireleng,
a community-based organization that provides
essential services and support to children who have
been orphaned due to AIDS, or who are otherwise
vulnerable, including children and young people
living with HIV and several who live in child-headed
households. Ikageng offers basic necessities and
support to help children thrive, including monthly
food parcels, nutritional supplements for children
living with HIV, toiletries (like soap, washing power,
and toothpaste), clothing, school fees, mentoring
and skills training, and linkages to health care. Ikageng
provides services and support to over 1,000 orphaned
and vulnerable children.
UGANDA
Since 2004, Keep a Child Alive has supported Alive
Medical Services, a clinic situated in Namuwongo,
one of the poorest and most crowded urban areas
of Kampala. The clinic offers HIV testing, antiretroviral
therapy, treatment and prevention of opportunistic
infections, psychosocial support and counseling, family
planning, early infant HIV diagnosis and other lab tests,
and support groups. The clinic’s nutrition program
provides 1,600 clients and their 11,400 family members
with food supplies each month. Nearly 200 clients
belong to the Tweyambe Group, an alliance of women
who come together for mutual support, and to make
and sell jewelry, baskets, and tote bags so they can
be self-sufficient. Alive provides dignified HIV care
and treatment services to nearly 11,000 people,
half of whom are receiving antiretroviral therapy.
INDIA
In Pune, Keep a Child Alive supports three local partners
who collectively implement the Bhavishya Project
(Bhavishya means “looking toward the future” in
Sanskrit). We have supported Sahara Aalhad, our
main partner in Pune, since 2010. Sahara provides
dignified inpatient, outpatient, and outreach services
for people living with HIV and their families, including
accompaniment within the government HIV and TB
programs. At the center of Sahara’s model is meaningful
engagement of people living with HIV: over half of
the staff are former program clients. Since 2010,
more than 4,000 men, women, and children have
benefitted from Sahara’s compassionate HIV care,
treatment, and support services.
We have recently expanded our work in Pune by
bringing on two new local partners to complement
Sahara’s work. Saahasee builds women’s economic
independence by creating and nurturing self-help
groups and by providing vocational training for Sahara
clients, many of whom are widows. PRAYAS, an expert
in pediatric HIV care, trains and mentors Sahara
staff to provide quality clinical and psychosocial
services to children and adolescent clients living
with HIV.
