IEEE WOMEN IN ENGINEERING NEWSLETTER | NOVEMBER 2014 1 The mission of WIE is to facilitate the recruitment and retention of women in technical disciplines globally. IEEE WIE envisions a vibrant community of IEEE women and men collectively using their diverse talents to innovate for the benefit of humanity. Congratulations IEEE Women in Engineering Ajman University on the winning photo chosen for the IEEE Day Photo Contest 2014! WIE would also like to congratulate all the winners and those who have submitted photos of all their amazing events. Thank you forvisit making this year's IEEE Day a Success! Please our website at http://www.ieee.org/women, or email us at wie-newsletter@ieee.org. IEEE WOMEN IN ENGINEERING NEWSLETTER | NOVEMBER 2014 2 WIE would love to Profile You. WIE will highlight IEEE Women Technical Professionals in the IEEE WIE newsletter! In an effort to recognize IEEE women’s achievements in STEM, the profiles will aim to increase the public’s perception of women in STEM fields. This spotlight of women technical professionals: Aims to enhance the understanding of STEM careers. Describes how the work of engineers benefits humanity and makes a difference. Introduce IEEE women, hear their stories of why they were inspired to become technical professionals, learn about their work environments, and find out their advice to girls interested in techn ical fields. The profiles submitted will need to contain the following information: Brief biography Why did you become a technical professional? What information or advice would you like to pass on to young girls interested in STEM? How does your work as a technical professional benefit humanity? If you are interested in being highlighted in the newsletter, please submit your profile to keyana.tennant@ieee.org. Deseada Gutierrez Brief biography Desi graduated from the Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences (Finland) with a B.Sc of Engineering in Information Technology in 2012, in a double degree scheme in conjunction with the University of Malaga (Spain), where she graduated with a B.Sc and a M.Sc in Telecommunications Engineering. She is currently pursuing an employment based Ph.D funded by the Irish Research Council, in the Radio an Optical Communications Lab at the RINCE Institute in Dublin City University (Ireland) while she works as a Senior Research Engineer in Pilot Photonics developing optical comb sources for telecoms which are expected to be a key enabler for the next generation of high density optical networking transmission solutions. Why did you become a technical professional? I always found myself asking questions of why and how. That feeling of continuous curiosity and willingness to make a difference, took me to engineering. I found in my career a whole new world of innovation and creativeness. What information or advice would you like to pass on to young girls interested in STEM? "The world is continuously changing thanks to technology. Allow yourself to be part of it! Do not be afraid nor intimidate, speak up and bring your innovation." How does your work as a technical professional benefit humanity? Our optical comb sources in conjunction with my research are expected to have a meaningful impact in the telecommunications field, allowing higher speed optical transmissions. I have a firm belief that my work will provide positive impact to the society Please visit our website at http://www.ieee.org/women, or email us at wie-newsletter@ieee.org.
