Share Your
‘Bounty’ With
Your Loved Ones
It’s almost Thanksgiving, a holiday that once
celebrated the harvest season. Although many of us
today may not be directly
connected to agriculture, we
still gather on Thanksgiving with our loved ones to
share whatever “bounty” we
may have. But this practice
doesn’t have to begin and
end with food. Why not incorporate the spirit of sharing into your overall financial strategy?
Here are a few suggestions for doing just that:
• Make financial gifts.
You could give shares of
stock to your loved ones, or
perhaps give them money to
help fund their IRAs. (They
must have earned income,
however, to be eligible to
contribute to an IRA.) You
can give up to $14,000 per
year, per recipient. If you
are married, you and your
spouse can each give up to
the $14,000 yearly limit.
• Invest in your children’s future. To help your
children meet the high costs
of higher education, you
might want to invest in a
college savings vehicle. One
option to consider is a 529
plan. When you contribute
to a 529 plan, your earnings are subject to tax-free
growth potential and distributions are free of federal taxes, provided they are
used for qualified higher
education expenses. (Keep
in mind, though, that Section 529 plan distributions
not used for these qualified
expenses may be subject to
income tax and a 10% penalty.) Furthermore, if you
invest in your home state’s
529 plan, you may receive
state tax incentives. Tax issues for 529 plans can be
complex, though, so you’ll
need to consult with your
tax advisor about your situation. Another benefit of 529
plans: You control the assets
right up to the point at which
they are actually used. So, if
you have been putting away
money for a particular child
(or grandchild) and he or she
decides against college, you
can easily switch to another
beneficiary.
• Review your insurance
policies. If something were
to happen to you, is your
life insurance sufficient to
take care of your family? In
other words, would there be
enough money available to
pay off your mortgage, send
your children to college and
help your surviving spouse
meet at least some of his or
her retirement expenses? A
financial professional can
help you determine if your
life insurance is sufficient for
your needs.
• Consider involving
your family with your estate
plans. To help ensure your
wishes get carried out the
way you intended, consider
keeping family members informed of your estate strategy, which could involve your
will, living trust, power of
attorney and other legal documents. And don’t forget to
keep your beneficiary designations up to date on your retirement accounts and your
life insurance policy. So if
you’ve gone through changes
in your family situation, such
as a divorce or remarriage,
work with your professional
team, including your financial advisor and your tax and
legal advisors, to make ensure your investment strategy
aligns with your estate goals.
Once the turkey is eaten
and the football games have
ended, Thanksgiving will
draw to a close. But consider
these strategies sharing your
“bounty” with your loved
ones all year long — and
throughout your lifetime.

KIM KOMANDO TECH Q&A
Best family cell plan
Q. My daughter is about to join
my wife and me on our cellphone
plan, and I’m not looking forward to
the cost. Do you know what carrier
has the best cell plan for three people?
A. For three people, you’re not
going to do much better than Verizon.
Its 2 gigabyte and 4 gigabyte plans are
$140 and $155, respectively. For a family of three with a teenager, you’re probably going to want 4GB of data.
Of course, that’s for contract plans. If you want to go
with a carrier that doesn’t have contracts, then T-Mobile’s
Simple Choice plan is only $90 for three phones using
1GB of data each.
Beautiful woman likes him, maybe
Q. I have started online dating. Now, I’m just a typical guy with a good job but a smoking hot lawyer is interested in me. We’ve never chatted or met. Before this
goes any further, is there any way that I can see if this
picture of her is legitimate? I don’t want to get scammed.
A. Unfortunately, this happens a lot on the dating
sites. People set up profiles using pictures that they find
online. It is possible to see if a photo appears elsewhere
on the Internet. Do a Google Reverse Image Search. First,
go to her profile and download her profile picture. Then,
upload the photo and Google will tell you where else the
same photo is online. It’s pretty slick!
What’s the most realiable laptop?
Q. I’m trying to decide on a new laptop and want a
reliable brand. These things are expensive! Do you have
any suggestions?
A. The Apple MacBook lasts a long time, and it can
take a pounding from kids and travel. On the Windows
side, ASUS and Lenovo rank high for reliability while Dell
customers love its great technical support and customer
service. On the other end of the scale, Acer, Gateway and
HP usually don’t fare as well in reliability studies, being
about twice as unreliable as other brands.
Kindergarten: Front row: Caden Montgomery, Roston Carnes, Onorio Tijerina and Asher VanDyk. Back
Row: Eve Vega, Lahira Lopez, Annabelle Doubet, Haleigh Smith and Rylin Wilkerson. Absent: Wyatt Penington.
Photoshop for free
Q. I would love to have Photoshop but I don’t have
that kind of money. I see it for free online but I know
those are pirated files. Is there any other way to get Photoshop?
A. The latest version of Photoshop costs anywhere
from $10-$50 a month. There is an alternative and free
program called GIMP. It began in 1995 as a project at UC
Berkeley, but it’s come a long way since then! In fact, it has
many of the same capabilities as Photoshop.
Mac antivirus software
Q. I was told not to put antivirus software on my
Mac, but I thought I’d double-check. Is that right?
A. I’m glad you did. Whoever told you that isn’t giving
out good advice. There are more threats appearing that target Macs. One like the recent “Kumar in the Mac” could
bypass your Mac’s built-in security. Without third-party
security software, you’re a sitting duck for something like
that. Both Sophos and Avira have free security software
for Mac. You can start there, or look up other major security company’s products.
Sharing photos without email
Q. I’m trying to share some photos privately with
a friend, but I can only send one per email. Is there an
easier way?
A. You bet. There are plenty of file-transfer services
out there. You can share hundreds of megabytes or even gigabytes of files at once. You only need to send your friend
a link. Take a look at Wikisend for secure sharing up to
100MB. For larger files, give WeTransfer a look. Trust me;
your friends, family and email service will thank you.
1st Grade: Front Row: Bennet Roeloffs, Connor Tillison, Michael Rust, Jacob Alambar, Sammy Salinas,
Ayden Underwood and Roger Puga. Back Row: Braelee Butterfield, Alana Duncan, Mollye Morgan, Gabby
Oranday, Brooklyn Przybyiski and Bailey Milbocker. Absent: Presley Gage.
Protecting your Wi-Fi network
Q. How can I keep porn off our home Wi-Fi network?
A. There’s actually a free service made just for this
kind of thing. It’s called OpenDNS. With a few quick
tweaks to your router, you can block any type of content
you don’t want in your home. It’s a powerful system, but
choosing the settings you want can be intimidating for
some people. So, OpenDNS has a pre-configured option
called Family Shield that’s set to block what most people
find objectionable. That’s free for home use as well.

Indians season over
The Sanger Indians (9-3) football team dug themselves a
big hole early on as Paris (8-4) raced out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead in the area-playoff game at Denison High School on
Friday. The Indians took the opening kickoff and drove inside
Paris’ 20-yard line, behind the running of freshman quarterback
CJ Jackson. But, failed to get any points, missing a 36-yard
field goal in the wind.
Paris was lead behind the powerful running of quarterback
Quez Allen. It took him a couple of plays to run up the middle
for a 79-yard run and a touchdown for the 7-0 lead. A fumble by
Payton Howard on the Indians next drive, set Paris up for a very
short field and Allen made it 14-0 with a 1-yard plunge.
But after that point, until the Wildcats were able to score
with 2:35 remaining in the game, Sanger had control of the tempo and momentum. The Indians just couldn’t find much to show
for it on the scoreboard. Sanger had the ball inside Paris’ five
yard line, but was stopped short on fourth and goal with less
than a minute left in the first half.
Trailing 21-7 at halftime, Sanger moved the ball well and
played stellar defense in the third quarter only to see the score
remain unchanged.
After a fourth-down stop on Paris’ opening drive of the second half, Sanger went on an 11-play drive that ended at the
Paris 3-yard line after Turner Barnes was stuffed for a 1-yard
loss on fourth-and-goal.
Sanger quickly forced a three-and-out and got great field
position after a bad punt went out of bounds at the Paris 25yard line, but then things turned from bad to worse.
The Indians lost 23 yards on the drive, including an 11Paris 28, Sanger 16

Football (Continued from pg.10)
yard loss on a failed screen pass on fourth-and-22 from the Paris 37.
After yet another Sanger defensive stop, the Indians had the ball at the Paris 1-yard line
facing second-and-goal and ended up having to settle for a 21-yard Dakota Branch field goal to
make the score 21-10 with just more than eight minutes to play.
The Indians faced a lot of adversity this year, losing their star senior running back Tre’von
Jackson, in the first district game and their senior quarterback Brandon Mann late in the season.
They still managed to advance to the second-round of the playoffs.

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech head coach Mark
Montgomery added six
newcomers during national
signing day two weeks ago,
as the Lady Techsters saw
five high school prep stars
and a junior college allAmerican join the program.
Jessica Ball (Thornton,
Colorado/Western
Nebraska CC), Berkley Calapp
(Ft. Collins, Colorado/Fossil Ridge HS), Anna Dies
(Haughton,
La./Haughton HS), Preslee Gallaway
(Pilot Point, Texas/Pilot
Point HS), Morgan Turkoly
(Sanger, Texas/Sanger HS)
and Chelsea Rangel (Bossier
City, La./Benton HS) comprise this year’s signing class
for LA Tech.
Turkoly has known for
nearly two years she was
going to attend Louisiana
Tech, but made it official on
signing day.
Turkoly is a highly-touted outfielder from Sanger
High School in Texas that
led the Indians to three
straight district titles and a
pair of regional semifinal
appearances. As a junior she
batted .565 with 11 doubles,
seven triples and 11 home
runs with 43 RBI and 39
runs scored.
“She is essentially a
five-tool player that brings
so much to the table,” Montgomery said. “In addition to
her strong skill set, she has
great competitiveness and
work ethic. She also plays
for Texas Glory-Shelton, so
she has played against the
best and performed at a high
level. Morgan should pro-

vide an immediate impact
on our team next season.”
Turkoly is a three-time
first team all-District 9-3A
selection and a three-time
all-area selection by the
Denton Record Chronicle.
The two-time all-state honoree was named the District 9-3A MVP in 2014 and
the District 9-3A Offensive
Player of the Year in 2013.
“I chose LA Tech for
several reasons,” Turkoly
said. “I loved the coaching
staff, which was a big factor
in my decision. The college
town atmosphere and tradition was something I was
looking for in a college and
I think Louisiana Tech softball is a program on the rise.
I wanted to be a part of that
success.”
She’s also played select softball since she was 7
years old, all with the intention of one day playing for a
Division I program.
Utter Auto Credit is pleased to announce
the addition of Carl Spindle to our staff in
Sanger. Carl was born and raised in Sanger,
and has worked for Bill Utter Ford for
almost 20 years. Stop by and see him soon!

“I was never guaranteed
anything, all I asked for was
a chance,” Turkoly said.
“The key was the coaching,
and I got that feeling when I
first walked on campus that
this was going to be a perfect
fit.”
Turkoly had offers
from Kansas, Northwestern State and Wichita State,
but ultimately signed with
Louisiana Tech. The Lady
Techsters recruited Turkoly
as an outfielder, a position
she plays on her travel team,
Texas Glory Gold.
