Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing Ghana Mission Trip Coverage
CDU’s Global Health Initiative held a debriefing and video
screening about their trip to Ghana, West Africa last
month. With Mission Maker funds, they took much needed
supplies and treatments to those in need. They also took in
the sights of middle class Ghana and learned they have
much in common. Click the play arrow above to see an ex-

All About Drew Introduces Elementary Students to Nursing Careers
On Wednesday morning November 19, CDU participated in "All About Drew" where we
hosted 80 first, second, and special education students from Lincoln Drew elementary
school. A team of nursing students gave them a tour of the nursing facility in the Life Science Research Nursing Education Building. They were able to listen to heart and lung
sounds on the simulation mannequins with their new stethoscopes. They also read a story
about Dr. Charles R. Drew (For which their school is named, in part) as well as learn about
all the wonderful types of nursing professions. The children were then served a catered lunch and each child received a
small backpack with a book and CDU pencil.
“This is our 2nd annual event,” said Belinda Addo, organizer. “The first year I did this through donations from nursing students. This year, through funds I received from the Mission Maker, I was able to purchase stethoscopes, books and backpacks for each child.” This has been another Mission Maker success story! Community Faculty: Attorney Robert Garcia Meets President Obama
Robert Garcia, a civil rights attorney and a Community Faculty member of CDU,
came face to face with President Barack Obama recently.
The paths of the two crossed in the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains on October
10th when President Obama designated the San Gabriel Mountains National
Monument. “This is an issue of social justice. Because it’s not enough to have this
awesome natural wonder within your sight– you have to be able to access it,”
said the President. Read the entire story here.

CDU Helps the EJ Jackson Foundation
give 10,000 Thanksgiving Dinners
For the past 32 years, the
Jackson Limousine Foundation has distribution over a
million Turkeys and all the
Thanksgiving trimmings to
less fortunate area families. This year, the effort
was a bit tougher, because
donations weren’t coming
in.
“When the clarion call for
support was sounded,
Charles R. Drew University
of Medicine and Science
(CDU) did not hesitate to
answer. The event has
become a hallmark of the E.J. Jackson Foundation commitment
to caring for individuals who are in most need. And is very
much appreciated by the same community the University has
served for nearly 50 years. We encourage other educational
institutions to participate,” said CDU President and CEO Dr. David. M. Carlisle.

Many people are aware of CDU's mission to reduce health disparities in minority and under-served populations. What may
be less well known to the public is CDU's pursuit of this mission
in regions outside of California and the United States. The university's International Health Programs have a long history of
reducing global health inequities. Some of the most successful
and innovative of these programs are U.S. Department of Defense and PEPFAR (the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS
Relief)-funded programs that partner with the military of host
countries Rwanda, Angola, Belize, and Jamaica to tackle the
problems of HIV/AIDS. Through these programs, CDU is helping
to address multiple issues in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, not just in the military, but in the population at large. Dr.

It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your

come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Join us and

For us, we assemble a team which meets in the Cobb

The Sleep Doctor
Speaks: CDU Alum
Dr. Tracy Charles Explains Anesthesiology from Local Numbing to Lights Out!
For many patients, anesthesia is the scariest part of
surgery. But you can ease
your fears and prevent the
rare negative outcome with
awareness and good communication with doctors.
Dr. Tracy Charles, veteran anesthesiologist, trained at
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU)
calls herself “The Sleep Doctor.” She’s not the kind who
studies why you can’t get to sleep or stay asleep. She’s the
“Lights Out” anesthesiologist who puts you to sleep moments before surgeons fix whatever ails you.
Dr. Charles gives us a quick primer into her world of anesthesiology, which at the center is anesthesia: a temporary
state consisting of unconsciousness, loss of memory, lack of
pain, and muscle relaxation.
“First, you must understand that an anesthesiologist is a
bona fide medical doctor,” said Dr. Charles. She recalls numerous times when she asked crucial questions of her patients and they say “Well, I’ll just wait until a doctor gets
here.” Dr. Charles doesn’t take it personally but she will
affirm “I am a doctor.” Read entire article here
