Speaker
Presentation 20 November
Toastmasters International
This week our presenters were two
representatives of Toastmasters –
Graham Fuller and Greg Hayes.
Meeting: 27th November
At Edendale Farm
Meeting: 4 December
In addition to his commitment to
Toastmasters, Graham is a member of
the Rotary Club of Albury Hume and
current treasurer of District 9790.
The ‘Traffic Lights’ demonstrated by
Graham elicited a lot of interest in the
way they are used to curtail speakers who
lose track of their allotted time slots.
These are a timing device and for a 5 to 7
minute speech the green light is set to
come on after 5 minutes. The middle
yellow light replaces it at the 6 minute
mark and finally the red light at the top
comes on when 7 minutes are up. At this
point the speaker has only 30 seconds to
wrap up. It seems that if this warning
sequence is ignored the speaker will be
interrupted by someone walking up to the
microphone and actually stopping
proceedings with a reminder that time is
up!
A tempting thought sometimes.
Graham spoke about the ‘3 Rs of
Evaluating’ process which is at the core
of every presentation at Toastmasters
and on which speakers depend for
information, help and development.
Negative criticism is not part of the
process. Instead, the focus is on positive
aspects of a talk as well as suggestions
for improvement. The 3 Rs are Review,
Reward and Respond.
The Review looks at whether the speaker
accomplished what he/she set out to do
whilst the Reward praises very specific
aspects of a presentation.
The Respond part of an evaluation

This meeting is at Wellers, Kangaroo
Ground.
Since incorporation in 1932 clubs are
now operated on a world-wide basis, the
primary goal being to assist members to
build, and improve on, their
communication, public speaking and
leadership skills. Graham informed us
that there are now approximately
313,000 members of Toastmasters
across 126 countries.

analyses what was heard (language,
grammar, pauses), what was seen
(gestures, body language, eye contact),
and what was felt (empathy, emotion).
The second speaker, Greg Hayes, is a
charter member (1976) of Diamond
Valley Toastmasters. This club has 26
members with an even gender mix and
an age range of from 25 years to 70 years
+. Meetings are held on the 1st, 3rd and
5th Mondays of each month at 7.30pm at
the Eltham Bowling Club. Participants give
impromptu talks on assigned topics,
conduct meetings and develop skills
relating to time-keeping, grammar and
parliamentary procedures. There are no
formal instructors; members evaluate one
another, a feedback process which is key
to the program’s success.
Greg shared with us his lack of self
confidence in public speaking dating back
many years to when he was prevailed
upon to make a speech at his brother’s
wedding. Since that experience he has
strongly recommended Toastmasters to
anyone wishing to improve their
communication skills, particularly young
people commencing their careers and
facing interviews. Greg’s wife has been a
member of Diamond Valley Toastmasters
since 1998 and has, he reports,
discovered a considerable and previously
unsuspected talent as a speaker. The
Diamond Valley club provided a speaker
(Roxanne Glans) for the Rotary Club of
Eltham Anzac Day dawn service and from
all accounts did an outstanding job. We
thank Graham and Greg for their time in
joining us here at Eltham and sharing with
us their experiences of Toastmaster
membership.

Con's Humor
There was a man who worked for the
Post Office whose job was to
process all the mail that had illegible
addresses. One day, a letter
came addressed in a shaky handwriting
to God with no actual address. He
thought he should open it to see what it
was about.
The letter read
Dear God,
I am an 83 year old widow, living on a
very small pension.
Yesterday someone stole my purse. It
had $100 in it, which was all the money
I had until my next pension payment.
Next Sunday is Christmas, and I had
invited two of my friends over for
dinner.
Without that money, I have nothing to
buy food with, have no family to turn
to, and you are my only hope...
Can you please help me?
the letter was opened.
Club Meets:
It read:
Dear God,
How can I ever thank you enough for
what you did for me?
Because of your gift of love, I was able
to fix a glorious dinner for my friends.
We had a very nice day and I told my
friends of your wonderful gift.
By the way, there was $4 missing.
I think it might have been those
bastards at the post office.

The postal worker was touched.
He showed the letter to all the other
workers. Each one dug into his or her
wallet and came up with a few dollars.
By the time he made the rounds, he had
collected $96, which they put into
an envelope and sent to the woman.
The rest of the day, all the workers felt
a warm glow thinking of Edna and the
dinner she would be able to share with
her friends.
Christmas came and went.
A few days later, another letter came
from the same old lady to God.
All the workers gathered around while
