The Banquet is attended each year by school teachers, church members, trustees, and other special friends who have played an important role in the success of our children during the year. The theme for the Banquet this year was “God Has a Plan for Your Life That is Out of This World” based on Jeremiah 29:11. Cottage parents, family workers, administrative staff, and others identified traits in the children that can be found in a follower of Christ. Those qualities were placed on a certificate, read aloud, and presented to each child. I wish you could have seen their faces as they received such positive recognition. For many, it was the first time in their lives that someone encouraged them for making good choices. Along with that special time we also enjoyed entertainment provided by our young people. I hope that you enjoy reading the other stories about the many ways you are making a difference and changing lives through the various ministries of the Children’s Home. Please remember to pray for us each day and when you have the opportunity, plan a visit to the campus in Monroe. We would love to provide you with a tour. Until then, may God bless you as you are a blessing to His children at your Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home. Mrs. Janice Pharris Mr. Gerald Pool Mr. Dwayne Rogers Mrs. Glenda Suggs Rev. Older brother Joshua runs into the room, eager to join the fun. They hurry to find their places on the sofa with their mom. Once everyone is comfortable—Laila in front of her mom and Joshua on the arm of the sofa behind them— the conversation begins. All three are warm, friendly, and they are obviously a very close-knit family. Toni and her children have been part of the HomePlace Ministry for a year. Toni’s face lights up as she shares her family’s experience, “This place has given such a great opportunity for me to just start my life over. Since I have been here, I have been around such good people, good women. They have supported me and my family in every way that we needed to be supported. There are so many things…. I have learned a lot, and my kids have been exposed to things they would not have been if we hadn’t come here.” Toni loves that her children have been in a good school. Laila and Joshua chime in, ready to talk about their day. Laila, who is completing first grade, and Joshua, third grade, are excited about their year-end awards at school. Both love school and both proudly report that they are honor roll students at Cypress Point. Joshua’s favorite subject is math. Laila enjoys art and wants to do manicures someday. She also likes “anything with computers.” “Joshua is a leader,” says Toni. “Any opportunity he has to lead, he takes it.” As the conversation continues, Joshua moves to the middle of the living room floor for a few minutes of impromptu gymnastics. Toni laughs that Joshua is definitely “very active” and adds that he’s also “so curious.” “Like Curious George?” he asks. Toni laughs and confirms, “Yes, just like Curious George…. He always wants to know about things. I don’t even know about some of the things he questions. Joshua has always had the attributes of a leader. He tries to lead whatever situation he is in and he seems to do it well.” Laila is “sometimes bossy but so sweet. And she’s always willing to share with others.” Laila adds that she loves cleaning and making her bed, a statement that Joshua teases her about. He’s not so sure that’s the case. “Laila always wants to learn,” says Toni. “I’ve always read to her. She is smart and wants to know the meaning of all the words that are new to her. She is definitely a giver and she likes to make friends and to play with her friends.” Both children love the LBCH campus where they can go outside, they always have friends to play with, and there are numerous activities in which to participate. Joshua & Laila The conversation turns to Lifeline Church and Laila’s participation as a praise dancer for a brief time. Joshua grabs a Bible, sits down beside his mom, and begins to read aloud from Isaiah. He has excellent reading skills and, indeed, one can almost imagine him leading a congregation one day. He shares that his name in the Bible means “courageous.” Toni stays busy with her job and she studies in the evenings, preparing for completion of her GED. When all three have finished their homework, they enjoy watching TV together. Their favorite activity is making up games. Toni says she always loves their time “just hanging out together,” and their very best times are when the kids have the opportunity to be creative. Laila is a very good story teller, making it up as she goes along; and they frequently create their own word games. Joshua and Laila giggle as Toni adds that they are also very skilled at ganging up on her when they want something. The family is looking forward to moving into a home of their own in the near future. Toni credits the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home with helping her reach this goal and for making such a tremendous difference for her family. “Can I just say how much I appreciate them and give a couple of people a shout-out?” she asks excitedly. “Susan Clark (LBCH Director of Family Care Ministries) is great; she is awesome. I have never met a person like her. Just her presence, she just knows how to make you feel good. Even a day that has been filled with junk, she’s so reassuring and knows how to make you feel better. She is so gifted. “Tonya Hancock (Director of the Christian Women’s Job Corp) made it possible for me to go and be tested and to begin working on my GED.” “I feel that everybody should be exposed to this place, no matter what walk of life they are in, because there is no place like it. There are so many God-filled people who want you to succeed every step of the way. I am so grateful for this place. When I came here, I didn’t know anything. I found hope here for me and for my kids. This is something we won’t ever forget. It’s made me a better parent and a better person. There have been a lot of ups and downs and I’ve had to swallow my pride a lot of times, but I’ve learned to be humble. And we’re still learning. It’s been so good for all of us to be here.” Toni admits it’s been tough some days combining work and her studies, but the LBCH family has provided support and encouragement every step of the way. Between these relationships and the friendships formed with other moms in Peace Cottage, she, Joshua and Laila have a strong network to help them as they transition to a home of their own. “The best times are when they have the opportunity to be creative” PRAYER CALENDAR Pheonix . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 1 Brady . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 2 Jacob . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 3 Stephen . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 4 Kenyon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 5 Kayden . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 6 Zachary . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 7 Avery . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 8 Jason . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 9 Cameron . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 10 John . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 11 Hope . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 12 DeAnna . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 13 Kaylena . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 14 Devin . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June15 Alexis . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 16 Jade . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 17 Evangline . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 18 Thomas . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 19 Eden . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 20 Kaia . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 21 Sha’Keya . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 22 Shyenne . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 23 Toni . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 24 Joshua . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 25 Laila . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 26 Jessica . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 27 Hannah . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 28 Alayna . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 29 Tina . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .June 30 Isabella . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 1 Jennifer . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 2 Joseph . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 3 Sandra . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 4 Jayden . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 5 Amber . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 6 Spheria . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 7 Sunnie . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 8 Terri . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 9 Aiden . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 10 Kayleigh . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 11 LaQuita . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 12 Remy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 13 Patrice . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 14 Claire . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .July 15 Happy Birthday! Why Do We Care for Orphans? It is important to reflect on why we care for orphans—to consider the biblical foundations for foster care, adoption, and orphan care ministries. God gives ample reasons through His Word for His people to be motivated and mobilized to care for the fatherless. The Old Testament clearly reveals a pattern of God’s care for the orphan and His command for His followers to demonstrate compassion for them in tangible and practical ways. God demands that the orphan be treated with justice and shown mercy. God equates mistreating the fatherless with sin and He equates caring for the fatherless with righteousness and blessing (see Exodus 22:22; Deuteronomy 10:18; 14:28-29; 24:1721; 27:19; Job 24:3; 29:11-12; Psalm 10:14, 18; 68:5-6; 82:3; 94:3-7; 146:7-9; Proverbs 23:10-11; Isaiah 1:16-17, 23; 10:12; Jeremiah 5:28; 7:1-7; 22:3; 49:11; Hosea 14:3; Zechariah 7:8-10; and Malachi 3:5). The New Testament doctrine of adoption can be found in five passages in the apostle Paul’s epistles: Romans 8:14-17, 23; 9:4; Galatians 4:3-7; and Ephesians 1:3-6. New Testament adoption describes the act of God whereby He makes us members of His family, by grace through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, thus granting us all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities therein. No community of people in this world should be more attuned to the cries of the orphan than the dearly loved, adopted children of God. Courage, confidence, and endurance in our care for orphans, especially when life is tough, should flow from our knowledge that God deals with us only and always in terms of our adoption in and union with Christ. James 1:27 states, “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” The phrase “orphans and widows” is used over 40 times by Old Testament writers, but only once in the New Testament. The first century Jewish Christian readers immediately knew what James was calling for based upon their knowledge of the Old Testament. Followers of Yahweh, true disciples of Christ, will “visit” (episkeptomai) – actually extend real care toward orphans. This pivotal verse is the New Testament foundation for the call to minister to the orphan. It must be read and understood in relation to the many Old Testament texts that call for justice and provision for the fatherless. These three areas of Scripture bear strong witness to God’s care for the orphan and His clear desire that His people do likewise. It is only through the generosity of God’s people that LBCH is able to meet the tremendous needs of the fatherless that we encounter every day. I pray that you and your church will join with others across our state and give generously to this year’s Children’s Home Sunday Offering. Please consider becoming a “helper of the orphan” (Psalm 10:14) through our “Connect:127” ministry at www.connect127.org or www.LBCH.org. Currently there are hundreds of families facing crises, which place their children at risk. Crises might include financial problems, unemployment and homelessness. In other cases, children come from families in which the parent needs time to heal physically or emotionally, or is recovering from an alcohol or drug addiction. Other families encounter a crisis when a parent is facing a brief incarceration period. LBCHFM is implementing a program that will offer a short-term, Christian residential home for children whose parents are experiencing these types of crises that affect their ability to provide care and/or safety for their children, and have no other child care resources available. The short-term residential program will serve children ages five through fourteen. Certified foster cottage parents will provide care for the children on the Children’s Home campus in Monroe. Custodial parents or guardians will voluntarily place their children for approximately two to six months. Weekly visitation, phone calls, and letters will be encouraged to promote family stability and the parent/child attachment. If you or someone you know could benefit from this ministry, please contact LBCHFM Family Services for additional information at 318-343-2244. Highlights from GRANBERRY COUNSELING CENTERS By Susan C. Clark, Director Whew……made another school year! Blessed be the NAME OF THE LORD!!!!!! Now what? First off, it’s planting time again. Last spring was our first attempt at gardening at HomePlace. On a scale of one to ten, I would have to say that we ranked about a seven, taking into consideration the soil of the heart. Our hearts were eager and excited about the new adventure. That in itself over shadowed the lean crop. This year we have taken a giant leap of faith and doubled the size of the garden with many more “little hands” helping out. What a blessing it is to see children digging in the dirt knowing that they will see the fruit of their labor. Although as a whole, they just enjoyed playing in the dirt. Stay tuned in to “the rest of the story” in a few weeks. Although Christian Women’s Job Corp’s semester ended in May, we will begin our summer session in two weeks. The ladies are looking forward to being a part of this curriculum. We will help explore the creative side of each mom by doing crafts. Also, the ladies will serve in several community mission projects. Some women will complete the academic requirements to sit for their Hi-Set (the new GED). Assessments and testing will continue to be done as well as engaging in Bible Study. The children of HomePlace will begin their recreation time which will include a variety of activities. The pool will be opened soon and that is always a high priority in these children’s lives. They will attend Vacation Bible School as well as being involved in Bible School on campus. Fun times just ahead!!! I am reminded that someone once said, “The fact that I can plant a seed and it becomes a flower, share a bit of knowledge and it becomes another's, smile at someone and receive a smile in return, are to me evidences of God’s presence.” I concur. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness, especially in the faith community, of the number of children in Louisiana’s foster care system who are waiting to be adopted. Over 300 of these modern-day orphans desperately need a permanent Christian family they can call their own. This year, about 90 rapellers went “over the edge” of the 24-story One American Place, the second tallest building in Baton Rouge. Rapellers included pastors, state and local legislators, Kori, Sadie, and John Luke Robertson from Duck Dynasty, and Louisiana’s First Lady, Supriya Jindal. As a result of this partnership, over 100 churches across the state have signed on and committed to finding families to start the process of foster care and adoption! Wait No More: Finding Families for Waiting Kids Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home & Family Ministries partnered with Focus on the Family and Louisiana Family Forum on May 10, 2014, for a Wait No More conference at Istrouma Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. More than 200 people attended representing 80 different families and 60 different churches. There were 13 agencies and ministries on site to answer participants’ questions and help them start the process of adoption from foster care. Twenty-two families initiated the process of adoption from foster care at the event. In addition, nine families indicated their desire to get involved by praying, wrapping around an adoptive family, or giving to help orphan care ministries.
