FY2014 ANNUAL REPORT THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A MORE IMPORTANT TIME to prioritize our children’s civic education. A recent report issued by the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania found that 35% of Americans could not name a single branch of government and only 36% were able to name all three. Today’s young people have access to a large amount of information, but need an understanding of the foundations of our country and the structure of our society to become informed community members, voters, leaders, jurors, and good citizens. They need Discovering Justice. Elisabeth J. Medvedow Executive Director Deborah S. Birnbach Board Chair This past year, Discovering Justice brought civic education to more than 19,000 elementary and middle school students, primarily from underserved communities, through innovative curriculum, professional development for teachers, experiential field trips to the Moakley U.S. Courthouse, and 11-week afterschool programs that culminate in community events at courthouses in Boston, Lowell, New Bedford, and Worcester. Through our programs, students are challenged to think critically, debate respectfully, and collaborate. They actively explore justice, equality, rights and responsibilities, immigration, and the U.S. Constitution. Our model of applying classroom-based curriculum to courthouse-based activities brings civics to life and generates meaningful and memorable experiences. Just ask any of the students – years later – about their second grade field trip to the Moakley U.S. Courthouse. You’ll hear all about the mock trial during which they were transformed into lawyers, jurors, judges, clerks, and witnesses to determine rightful ownership of a beloved teddy bear left out in the rain. We are at an exciting time of growth for Discovering Justice. Our literacy-building justice curriculum, which has been taught exclusively in elementary schools, is now expanding into middle school to more deeply connect our curricular and experiential learning. Beginning this year in sixth grade, students will compare and contrast the U.S. Constitution with the constitutions of Brazil, Cambodia, China, India, Iraq, South Africa, and Ukraine. Through informational texts and historical fiction, students will delve into the culture, geography, and government of countries that reflect the demographics of school districts and communities in Massachusetts. Over the next three years, we will develop curriculum for kindergarten, seventh, and eighth grades to achieve a true continuum of K-8 civic education. Discovering Justice empowers students to embrace the values of civic responsibility. The influence of our programs is felt far beyond classrooms; we help create school cultures of fairness, respect, and responsibility. Together with students, teachers, principals, lawyers, judges, and community volunteers, “We are Discovering Justice.” Please join us in our efforts to promote and foster civic education. This 16-week literacy-based social studies curriculum for grades one through six, with grade seven being developed this year, provides students with the tools they need to understand sophisticated ideas such as democracy, tolerance, rights, responsibilities, and the connection between rules and the law. CDJ is taught in schools in Boston, Cambridge, Lowell, Watertown, New Bedford, and Worcester and includes courthouse field trips which build on classroom lessons and introduce students to the justice system. Stand Up for Your Rights, an afterschool experiential learning program, transforms middle school students into appellate lawyers. Working with a team of attorney volunteers, students delve into the Bill of Rights, explore how constitutional protections apply in public schools, and come to understand the complexities of balancing the rights of individuals with the safety and welfare needs of communities. At the end of 11 weeks, students argue constitutional issues before Appellate Panels composed of actual judges and experienced attorneys. of America... It means a lot for a young mind to learn what is right and how even one person can change the world with this knowledge of democracy and justice.” – Priya, Arushi’s mom I Have A Dream It matters what happens As a second grader at the Cunniff Elementary School in Watertown last year, Arushi Iyer learned about justice through the Children Discovering Justice curriculum and took part in a teddy bear mock trial at the Moakley U.S. Courthouse. Arushi is also the author of one of the winning poems (at right) selected as part of our Poetry Jam contest “Discovering Justice in My Community.” Happy endings are always possible All should be free Voices can speak Everyone that makes an effort helps Actions move quick Decisions to make freedom Raising courage helps Everything should be positive A small idea becomes a big thing Many things are done if you push hard 3 Lowell middle school student Pechthida Kim has participated in both Discovering the Bill of Rights and the Mock Trial Program. Pechthida says, “To me, justice means fair or morally correct behavior and treatment. Justice is something that everyone should be treated with, whether or not they are citizens of the United States. America is the embodiment of justice, and that is why the population of immigrants in the United States is growing every single day.” “I love seeing my students argue in front of the Court. Watching a child who is usually quiet in class, stand up, make an argument, and have the courage to defend it is awe inspiring.” – Joseph Jussaume, Lowell teacher Joseph Jussaume, a teacher and lawyer in Lowell, has been actively involved with Discovering Justice for several years, bringing his students to the Moakley U.S. Courthouse for Discovering the Bill of Rights and volunteering for the Mock Trial Program. “Discovering Justice is an invaluable resource, especially in communities such as Lowell. Without Discovering Justice, our students would not have been able to visit the federal courthouse in Boston.” 5 “Children Discovering Justice embeds fairness and equity into the curriculum and helps students to make decisions about the world.” – Principal Sandy Mitchell-Woods (at right) Nathan Hale School, Boston Nathan Hale students share their views on justice: Why do we have justice? “So we can have the same things fair and square” “Justice is about getting freedom” What does justice mean at school? “Everybody is nice to each other, to be fair” “Polite and respectful” “Kind to each other” For more than a decade, Discovering Justice has partnered with the Nathan Hale School to provide an innovative civics curriculum, rich professional development, culturally responsive books, and interactive field trips. Mitchell-Woods exclaims, “We are a Discovering Justice school with a Discovering Justice culture that is apparent every day in the voices of our children.” 7 “Discovering Justice provides on-the-ground experience with the justice system, not television learning. Students grow so much in terms of their knowledge of law, and they also develop the building blocks for being a professional in the world. They come to see the courthouse and the justice system as a tool for change.” – Alana Van der Mude, Esq. (at left) Goulston & Storrs Nearly 200 lawyers worked with students in the experiential legal programs Discovering the Bill of Rights and Stand Up for Your Rights last year. As a volunteer attorney, Alana Van der Mude has spent over 60 hours working directly with students to help them prepare mock trials and mock appellate arguments. “I also ran the 2014 Boston Marathon (with Michael Haroz, pictured, and Peter Brigida III) so that more students could realize the power of their own voices through Discovering Justice’s innovative programs.” 9 Chief Judge Patti B. Saris of the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts (at left) has been involved with Discovering Justice since its inception. “Discovering Justice is a cornerstone of the way we view the Moakley U.S. Courthouse as a community court.” “Students actually make arguments to real judges in real courtrooms. The more kids we get into a courthouse to do something that’s positive, the better.” – Hon. Nathaniel Gorton of the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts with Hon. Diana Maldonado, Massachusetts Appeals Court, and Hon. Karyn Scheier, Massachusetts Land Court (below from left) Federal and state judges preside over mock trials, question students during oral arguments, and discuss the justice system during Courthouse Tours. “The excitement of the students is contagious.” – Hon.
