What’s New at the Museum
We Value Our Visitors... Coming and Going.
Our volunteers always “go the extra mile!” The snapshot below in
front of the Museum was taken for these visitors by volunteer docent
Connie Kormanyos before they left to continue exploring Flagler Beach.

And sometimes our visitors go that extra mile, like Isabelle “Belle”
Rucker and her son David (photos right) from Washington who brought
along a folder of photos and articles about the Flagler Hotel owned for
many years by Belle’s grandparents J.W. & Mabel Green. It stood at
the site of today’s Flagler Beach Farmer’s Market. To allow us time to
scan their photos, they toured the Museum and David even stopped
by the Pier to check out our radio station Surf 97.3. To see some of
their Flagler Hotel photos, go to the “History Corner” on pages 8 and 9.

Earlier this year, photographic treasures
were provided by Zelda (Headley) Walker
of her family’s fruit stand on A1A just south
of the Moody Hotel. Look for Zelda’s pictures Gala “Thank yous” - p. 2 & 3, photos - p. 12
from the 1940s in the next issue of the FBHM
Life Preserver. Also in an upcoming issue, we’ll feature
pictures and stories about local surfing legend
Frieda Zamba, from a scrapbook supplied by
Judie Zamba and brought in by Frieda’s mom
and long-time Museum member Janet. She was shown the 1930’s hollow core
wooden surfboard we display; another area of interest was the Flagler Beach
miniature village which Janet’s husband Albert created before he passed away.
Other great items donated this year include a 1976 Aliki Townhouse
Condominiums groundbreaking article brought in by frequent contributor
Helen Varn Holton. Michele Miller of
Titusville donated B&W photographs
of she and other 1958 beauty pageant
contestants. Robert Newbury provided
several pictures featuring the Flagler
Beach Police Department.
Another accessions project made
progress this year as Rob Creal put
out the word that the Museum would
like to have a full complement of local
yearbooks. He donated the first dozen
from Bunnell High School and more have
found a home here with donations by
Libby Broadhurst, Stuart & Sharyn
Rockett, Museum Board Director
Linda S. Jones who also dropped off an
advertising card from the Flagler Beach
Hotel with a 1954 calendar on the back,
and Harry & Kathy Moody who also
donated a photo and postcards showing the old Bunnell High School. If you

Capably coordinating check-in/check-out were Linda Jones and

(photo right) Carol Fisher was so
well-disguised that her own tablemates didn’t recognize her, and so
convincing that a guest scolded her
for proffering cigarettes!
Beth Mount lent her talents
again this year, and was responsible for creating the portholes using
photos by Scott Spradley which
were enlarged by our friend Dave
at Joseph Pozzuoli Architects.
The decorative additions were so
popular that they were purchased
by guests that evening and were
also requested to be left behind
for future events by the Halifax
Plantation decor team.
Finally thank you to all the
guests who came out to play,
especially Team Gala’s husbands
and boyfriends who sacrifice for
weeks just to sit next to an empty chair on Gala Night: Sam Arden,
Dan Bayerl, Jim Carney, Jim Davis, Jeff Fisher, and Bill Mount.
PS: Do not believe any rumors you might have heard about Bayerl
& Pozzuoli winning prizes for dancing about with purses and boas
while wearing women’s high heels!
Editor’s Note: Museum Gala 2014 is now one for the history
books, but really fantastic volunteers deserve a “group hug” for making
our annual event a success. Featured here are those who gave of their
time. On the opposite page are gala sponsors, along with members,
friends, and businesses that gave cash or silent auction donations.
If you know someone here, applaud them. If you are a customer at any
of the businesses on page 3, take time to tell them thank you. If you

Anything Goes!
Team Gala set sail for a new venue and
theme in 2014, and we docked at the Halifax Plantation Golf Club
where the great staff helped us create our Anything Goes cruise
through the decades theme.
From the piano bar to the Blackjack table to the decorative towel
animals that adorned the room, cruises
from the 1920s through the present were
celebrated. Live entertainment, the hallmark of every great sea cruise, included
incredible variety. Dana Davis belted out
two musical hits, Kenyon Dye performed
at his piano bar, Justin Maddox (photo
left) and Annie Livingston dealt Blackjack, and Cindy Miller’s former students
danced up a storm.
Guests also provided much entertainment as they participated for prizes and
first-to-the-buffet-dibs in games like “Name That Tune,” “Quest,” and
“Human Heads or Tails.” Once again, live and silent auctions provided
hot bargains on cool items, and the fantastic “Fish Bowl” surprise gift
card items sold out. As always, the dance floor was hopping all night
long, and the photo ops were cruise-worthy.
Returning emcee & “Hostess with the Mostest” Lauren Watkins
was the hit of the evening as she kept all of the fun, games and music
coordinated. She was assisted in the fun by her friend “Buffalo” who
doubled as auctioneer for our live auction. In addition to reminding
everyone that they were there to raise money for the Museum, Lauren’s towel animals awarded as contest prizes were a hit. As always,
our good friend Lisa McDevitt & her Flagler Auditorium, ensured
that all attendees could use credit cards instead of cash. This year
Carol Fisher & her BeachHouse Beanery also offered us that option too and many guests were able to conveniently buy their tickets
in advance by phone.
Farewell & thanks to docents Pat & Hal Mesnard who volunteered
faithfully together for 10 years. And best wishes to Tom McKinney
who after a decade of docenting & deposits, has “Gone Fishing!”

All those who attended “Anything Goes!” last month know Dana Davis as the awesome chanteuse who belted out two fantastic
show tunes at our annual costume gala. But in real life, Dana is a professional realtor who is dedicated to ensuring that every person
she works with has a unique and rewarding experience.
Her commitment to client’s and non-profit organization’s needs is evident upon the first
meeting with Dana. When she joined the Museum’s Team Gala, she hit the ground running
and volunteered to decorate, entertain, and sell tickets. She also became a gala sponsor!
This native Floridian (that rare find) was born in Daytona Beach, raised in Winter Park,
and reared her children in Melbourne Beach, which has given her an excellent perspective and
love of the area. In her own words, Dana says, “I adore Flagler Beach. I am so grateful to be
living Flagler County. As a native Floridian I can say that Flagler Beach is such a treasure. It
is a unique town filled with friendly people who have a strong sense of community. I love how
Flagler Beach pulls the community together with all of its special events, the farmers market

of which offer breathtaking views of the ocean and live music of local musicians.”
Dana’s award winning customer service background and business success qualifies her

Having experienced the many phases of life from starting out and raising a family through

When asked what drew her to volunteering at the Museum, Dana said, “I learned about the
museum while strolling through Flagler Beach at a Fourth of July event a couple of years ago. The
FBHM ensures that the preservation of the past, present and future history of Flagler County will
never be lost. I chose to join Team Gala because I feel it is very important to preserve as much of
the history of our lovely town as possible. The annual gala proceeds are one of the main sources of
revenue that keeps the Flagler Beach Historical Museum doors open.”
Dana is not just a fan of history; she has also integrated her love for the environment into her
career by obtaining the National Association of Realtor® Green designation. She did this because
of the many misconceptions about the time and money it takes to implement green home features
and sustainable lifestyle practices. She believes that every step you take towards green is a step in the right direction. Whether you change
one habit or your entire way of living, your actions can reduce your carbon footprint to make the world a safer and healthier place to be.
To sum it up, whether one is looking for a home, an investment property or commercial space, Dana is uniquely qualified to guide all
buyer’s through the process. And her volunteerism has helped many local organizations, with the Museum just one of the lucky recipients. Dana

The History Corner:
A Flagler Beach Hotel Pictorial
Prompted by the surprise visit from
Belle Rucker, granddaughter of Flagler
Hotel owners J.W. & Mable Green, this History Corner features some of Belle’s photos
and others from the Museum archives.
According to Catherine Wilson’s
book “A New Beginning,” D.F. Fuquay
and George Moody began construction
of the Flagler Beach Hotel in 1923. Mr.
Moody sold his interest in the venture to Mr.
Fuquay who finished the project at the end
of 1924 and held a grand opening on July
4th, 1925. Belle’s grandparents owned and
managed the hotel beginning in the 1940s.
Belle said she has lots of stories about
the hotel from her childhood. “My grandfather would give us a roll of dimes, when we
came to visit, for the Coke machine. Back
then it was filled with the 6oz glass bottled
soda. They were inserted in racking. You put
your dime in, pushed a lever, and opened
a side front window door to pull out your
Coke that was pushed forward by the lever. However the kicker was
that if you were barefoot from outside or coming in from the beach
and went to grab the metal door you got shocked.”

Committee of Directors Cindy Dalecki, Kathy Feind,
and Teri Pruden. Nominations will be accepted from the
floor at the Annual Meeting. If there are no futher nominations, the recommended slate printed here will be officially elected and begin serving their terms immediately. .

Help Wanted!
Fundraising & Special Event Coordinator
Our friendly hometown museum has grown busier every year,
and we are now looking for a part-time fundraising & special event
coordinator. Proven success and experience in sales, fundraising, or
event management is essential. The position entails working closely
with the museum director, but will also require the ability to spearhead
and complete successful projects without supervision.
Due to the intermittent nature of special event work, the individual
hired will be expected to promote and renew business memberships,
be assigned to attend networking and other events in the community,
as well as spend time staffing or training at the museum. Willingness
and the ability to work well with volunteers will be a key component.
The position will be part-time as an independent contractor to
start but success in the job will ensure more hours if desired and/or
the opportunity to advance. Except for special events, scheduling will
be flexible and occur as a collaborative effort between the coordinator
hired and the museum director.

her welcoming smile. After
touring the Museum and
talking to Linda I knew that
I wanted to be a part of this
organization and its special place in the history of
Flagler Beach and Flagler
County. The experiences
I’ve had with the visitors and
friends of the Museum have
enriched my life and have
kept me hungry to learn
more about the history of
this unique beach town.”
That First Friday evening turned out to be
an enriching one for the
Museum as well. Sandra was immediately given an orientation with
Linda, and she was quickly scheduled to fill a few afternoons a month
as a Museum docent. It didn’t take long before Museum Director
Teri Pruden realized what a gem the organization had in Sandra.
Her bright spirit, constructive ideas, and willingness to assist at events
were genuinely appreciated.
She was the calm, nearly invisible, but much-needed backbone
whenever events threatened to get a bit chaotic due to their many
moving parts. Teri has often been heard singing Sandra’s praises,
especially about her special talent for quietly being right where she
is needed just before she is called on. Gala attendees will remember
Sandra as someone who took the time to welcome them and prerealize their needs. Her latest contribution has been to join the Museum
Board as Secretary.
As this article was bring written, Sandra was away for a few weeks
visiting family in the north. She says, “I am a proud mother of two sons
Mark & Michael and daughter-in-law Kay. These are the people who
keep me grounded and along with my sister Nina, they are my biggest
supporters and for that I am very grateful.”
Sandra was born and raised in Mocanaqua, Pennsylvania, and
she spent most of her life in Poughkeepsie, New York, before moving
to Palm Coast in 1994. Her hobbies include tennis, dancing, bridge,
movies, and music. Sandra’s resume includes this quote, “My objective
is to continue as a contributing member of the community in which I
lives where my services and abilities can be put to use as needed.”
There is no question that she is fulfilling her mission. Sandra has
volunteered as a poll worker and clerk during County elections. She has
also represented the Flagler County Futures Committee, the Friends
of Tennis, the Palm Coast Players Club, Palm Coast Profiteers, and
the Palm Coast Investment Group. Sandra has served her community
through the Museum, the Flagler Playhouse, the Flagler Auditorium,
Feed Flagler, Friends of A1A Scenic & Historic Highway, recreation
planning for Surfside Estates residents, and is currently serving as a
Beverly Beach Commissioner.
Sandra wrote a special note for Museum founder and president
Catherine Wilson, “Thank you, Catherine for giving so many people
the opportunity to experience this living history.“ And we thank you,
Sandra for making the Museum a better place to be with each project
you take on.
